Teaching Notes - Area

Area of a shape

The area of a 2D shape is the amount of space inside it. Examples of units of area are mm2, cm2, and m2.

(1cm2 reads as “1 square centimetre”).

Example

What is the area of this shape, if the area of each square is 1 cm2? Simply count the squares.

There are 10 squares contained in this shape.

The area of the shape is 10 cm2.

The area of each square is 1 cm2. There are 12 squares contained in this rectangle.

The area of the rectangle is 12 cm2.

Page 8: TROON PRIMARY SCHOOL & EARLY YEARS CENTRE Home … · Writing Task Mild Medium Hot Write one paragraph using DASH. Write Write two paragraphs using DASH. three paragraphs using DASH

Area of squares and rectangles In the previous example of the rectangle, we found out how to calculate the area of a rectangle by counting squares.

We can also find out the area by the use of a Formula:

Area = Length x Breadth or for short A = L x B.

Look at the same rectangle from before. By using the formula, we should calculate the same answer as we did by

counting the squares.

A = L x B

A = 3 cm x 4cm

A = 12 cm2

Here is another example without any squares, using the formula Area = Length x Breadth.

A = L x B

A = 5m x 10m

A = 50 m2

Calculating the Area of a Right Angled Triangle

To calculate the area of a Right Angled Triangle, use two steps as follows:

Step1 – Calculate the area of the surrounding rectangle.

A = L x B

A = 6cm x 11cm = 66cm2

Step2 - Now to calculate the area of the triangle, simply halve

the answer of the rectangle. Half of the area of a rectangle = the area of a right angled triangle.

Half of 66 is 33.

A = 33cm2

Catscape

We are super excited to share a brand new novel study with you!

The book is called Catscape! We are also excited to be working

with a real author - Mike Nicholson - to bring you lots of

exciting learning activities based on his book! We are very lucky that

Mike has agreed to read the book to you and next week you’ll be able

to listen to him reading his book through a link provided. Even

better - Mike Nicholson is from Edinburgh so we get to work with a

real Scottish author!

This fabulous book is award winning and we hope you enjoy it! We are

really looking forward to seeing your work and hearing your thoughts

as you read the book!

So, first of all… we should use our prediction reading skills to guess

what the book is about. You may have heard the phrase, ‘never judge

a book by it’s cover,’ and that’s right, however the cover has some

very handy clues! Use some clues from the book cover to predict

what the book will be about!

Page 19: TROON PRIMARY SCHOOL & EARLY YEARS CENTRE Home … · Writing Task Mild Medium Hot Write one paragraph using DASH. Write Write two paragraphs using DASH. three paragraphs using DASH

1- What does the title tell us? The book is called Catscape.

Does that give you any clues as to what the book will be about?

Why do you think that?

2- Now look at the front cover.

Think about any words or pictures you can see and perhaps the

colours or style of the design.

Are there any other clues about the book?

Have you changed your thoughts about the book?

What genre do you think this book is?

Page 20: TROON PRIMARY SCHOOL & EARLY YEARS CENTRE Home … · Writing Task Mild Medium Hot Write one paragraph using DASH. Write Write two paragraphs using DASH. three paragraphs using DASH

3- Now it’s time to read the blurb! This gives us lots of clues

about the plot but won’t give away too much!

First, look at the words in red. What do they tell us? Why are they

that colour and a different font?

Page 21: TROON PRIMARY SCHOOL & EARLY YEARS CENTRE Home … · Writing Task Mild Medium Hot Write one paragraph using DASH. Write Write two paragraphs using DASH. three paragraphs using DASH

Then, read the paragraphs in black. What do you think now? Have

you changed your mind?
