Dear Colleagues,

October this year had three major festivals falling in the same month; Navratri festival culminating in Dushera followed by Diwali, all these festivals are celebrated across the nation with marvel. Together with bountiful of

monsoon rains and consequent bumper crops, people indulged in shopping in a big way, if the sales figures of all consumer goods are of any indication. Yes, the online sales on Flipkart, Snapdeal, Amazon etc were significant.

There are signs of major changes happening across the world, in political alignment between countries or in the

governance issues. People have to be ready to embrace uncertainties in view of the unprecedented events that

have been unfolded in the recent times. Our country is still facing a war like situations with its neighbour while

the middle-east is riddled with identity crisis. The climate change is posing a great threat with Celsius rising rapidly reducing the arctic ice mass by 28% compared to previous years during this time of the year, creating

panic among the world environment watchers. This is a major concern which is threatening the very existence of humanity. We have to treat this threat very seriously and do whatever possible to protect the environment

and the planet earth from any environmental disaster. We all must strive towards reducing the carbon footprint

in our daily lives.

SPACE FOR THOUGHTS!

We are reserving this space for "quotes" of leaders who have contributed to the Society, which shall help us understand ourselves better!

Some inspiring thoughts by Shri Ratan Tata:

• "I don’t believe in taking right decisions.. I take decisions & then make them right."

• "All of us do not have equal talent. Yet all of us have an equal opportunity to develop our talents". • "What worries me is that the threshold of acceptability or the line between acceptability and non-

acceptability in terms of values, business ethics, etc, is blurring."

• "I have been constantly telling people to encourage people to question the unquestioned and not to be

ashamed to bring up new ideas, new processes to get things done."

• "I view risk as an ability to be where no one has been before. I view risk to be an issue of thinking big, something we did not do previously. We did everything in small increments so we always lagged behind.

But the crucial question is can we venture putting a man on the moon or risk billions of rupees on a really way out, advanced project in, say, superconductors? Do you restrict your risk to something close

to your heart?

• "Ups and downs in life are very important to keep us going. Because a straight line even in an ECG

means we are not alive.

ENVIRONMENT

An indicator species is any biological species that defines a trait or characteristic of the environment.

For example, a species may delineate an ecoregion or indicate an environmental condition such as a

disease outbreak, pollution, species competition or climate change.

1. Lichens -

Interaction between lichens and air pollution has been used as a means of monitoring air quality since

1859. In Europe lichens have been used as sensitive bio indicators of air quality for more than a

century. As with most vegetation, lichens show a range of sensitivities to pollutants. Not all lichens

are sensitive to a particular pollutant, some can be remarkably tolerant. Among lichens are species

that are sensitive to Sulphur, nitrogen, acidity, halogens (e.g. fluoride), heavy metals and ozone.

For example:

• bushy lichens need really clean air • leafy lichens can survive a small amount of air pollution

• Crusty lichens can survive in more polluted air. • In places where no lichens are growing it is often a sign that the air is heavily polluted with

sulphur dioxide.

2. Mayflies and stoneflies: indicate high oxygen water

Stoneflies spend the majority of their lives as nymphs. Many species require a high concentration of dissolved oxygen and are found in clean swift streams with gravel or stone bottom.

Indicator species for levels of water pollution

level of water pollution indicator species

clean mayfly larva

low freshwater shrimp

high water louse

very high rat-tailed maggot, sludge worm

3. Mosses: indicate acidic soil

4. Greasewood: indicates saline soil

Greasewood grows on dry, sunny flat valley bottoms on ephemeral stream channels. It is one of the dominant

plants throughout Great Basin and Mojave Desert. In high saline areas, greasewood grows in nearly pure stands

5. Fungi: high conservation value, old-growth forests

Wood-decay fungi are the basis of saprotrophic species communities in forest ecosystems, and sensitive to intensive forest management. Their diversity correlates well with insect diversity, and indicates continuum of

dead wood at the stand or landscape level. Fungi, bracket fungi in particular, are used as indicators of conservation value in forest inventories, particularly in Nordic countries and boreal Russia

6. Frogs and salamanders as indicator species. Populations of amphibians are declining on a global scale.

Their decline is thought to be an indicator of tainted environments. Therefore, the numbers of amphibians

worldwide are being closely monitored. In a related example, the eggs of certain bird species are tested for

the presence of organic pesticides.
