SHOW COMMITTEE MEETING—COME JOIN US! The next Show Committee meeting will be on Monday, June 17 at 7pm College Hill Presbyterian. Planning is

coming along nicely, but we are still in need of an organized, friendly and energetic person to manage the Admissions and

Information area. This is a very important part of the show, as this is where we have the chance to tell visitors how best to

enjoy the show upon entry, as well as encouraging them to join TRMS as they leave. It can be very fast paced and

demanding at times, but also very rewarding. If you are interested in potentially taking on this role, please contact Eric

Hamshar at 918-284-3503 or [email protected], or simply come to the meeting.

All club members are encouraged to attend and participate at these meetings. Everyone's input is important and

appreciated. We have already had many volunteers willing to lead the different areas of the show, but we still need more

participation from club members. Please, lend a hand and a voice to help make the 2019 show a special one!

We are in need of specimens for both the grab bags and the spinning wheel. These should be small (under 2")

and relatively inexpensive, such as small tumbled stones, minerals such as Oklahoma rose rocks, quartz, or selenite, or

small fossils like shark's teeth, crinoid stems, etc. If you have something you can donate or know someone who does,

please let Donna Loffer or Eric Hamshar know.

-Eric Hamshar, show chair

Treats for the June 10 general membership meeting hospitality hour will be courtesy

of the members with last names beginning with the letters K through R. Please and thank you!

PEBBLE PUPS

At the May meeting we had 13 Pebble Pups in attendance. Holly Proctor filled in and talked to

the children about exhibiting with tips and pointers, to go along with the evening’s program.

They also discussed the shape and formations of crystals and made some wonderful crystal

drawings.

Ian Kirk, a 14-yearold Pebble Pup and Junior Rockhound of the Year, son of TRMS members Dianne and Michael Kirk,on Monday, 13 May 2019 was awarded the rank of Eagle in Boy Scouts. Earning 21 merit badges, of which 13 are mandatory, is part

of the requirement for Eagle. Ian has completed 34 badges. An Eagle candidate must plan and carry out a service project, ideally using other scouts to help him accomplish his goal. Ian's project was the creation of a peaceful and prayerful garden- a habitat for local fauna and a source of specimens for the biology teachers at Monte Cassino-as well as educational material describing the plants and their ecological importance, for use by the teachers. We are exceedingly proud of Ian, and found him a token eagle - an 1858 flying eagle penny - as a momento of this

achievement.

Jo Ann Mounce wrote: Hi Wayne, good to hear from you. Kevin chauffeured me to Texas last week. We had a great time looking on the South Larramore Ranch and the Needle Peak Duck flat hill. We looked 4 days. This was the last of

Teri Smith's scheduled trips. She and her family are moving to Hollister, California. It is 30 minutes from the ocean. She was raised in San Jose so it is like going home. She said she might come back next Spring for some trips if possible. Quite a few friends were there. Ed Tyndell from Houston, Lisa from Fort Worth, Don Noie and three friends

from various parts of the country were there. Turned out he was born in Fort Smith and is a nephew of a friend of the family. Johnny French and Terry Roberts were there also. Lots of others that I did not know. We left on Tuesday and got home on Easter Sunday evening. We found lots of pretty agates, Selenites, Carnelians, shells and plume agates. I bought a big Mexican Opal but it did not make the trip home. I have no idea what I did with it. We went to a rock shop in Study Butte. I bought a big, black and white botroydial cluster and some small Cathedral Agates. The cacti were all in bloom of red, yellow, pink and orange. The Alpine Rock Show happened to be on at the same time that we

were there. So we got to go several times. I bought the big Mexican Opal the first morning and a large Fluorite cluster. The dealers outside really got hot. The temperature was 90 to 95 each day. I also bought a zebra agate. It has some gray and white strips and some red spots. It was a good show.

Roxanna Chamberlin and her daughter, Rhonda Straessle, recently returned from a trip to Elizabeth City, North

Carolina where they attended the graduation of Roxanna’s grandson, Sam, from the Coast Guard’s Aviation School. They were joined by Sam’s Dad and his wife from Houston, making for a mini family reunion. Sam’s new station will be Clearwater, Florida—a distinct change in climate from previous deployments to Alaska and the Aleutians. All toured historic Edenton, N.C., a former sailing port on Abermarle Sound until a storm closed their channel, shifting

ships to Elizabeth City. Visiting the Outer Banks allowed them to tour Kitty Hawk/Wright Bros. Museum and the archaeological site and museum of Fort Raleigh/Fort Roanoke where the “Lost Colony” was located. This was where the first white child in what became the U.S.A. was born. Her grandfather sailed to England to get supplies for the colony but was unable to quickly get a ship back because of war between England and Spain. Two years later, he returned to the colony and found no one. A sign saying “Croat” was the only clue, the name of a friendly Indian tribe that inhabited what is now known as Cape Hatteras. On Roxanna and Rhonda’s return trip, they went through Linsville Caverns (wet and still growing) and visited Linsville

Falls in N.C., traveled through a mining area and visited a rock shop. They also stopped in Nashville to go to the

Parthenon, a replica of the original building in Athens, Greece. It included an immense golden statue of Athena. Another stop was Crystal Gardens in Bentonville, Arkansas, full of impressive art and lovely walking trails.

This is always a busy time of the year for Richard Jaeger. The last weekend of April he attended the Waynoka Rattlesnake Festival on Saturday and the Wichita Gem & Mineral Show on Sunday; the Wichita Club always puts on a great show and he always enjoy visiting with friends from Kansas. The past two weekends he’s been at the Renaissance Festival at the Castle of Muskogee. This past weekend he ran into several past and current TRMS members there including Jennifer Biddle, Diana Hartzman, who always participates in the Festival, Tony & Martha Rongey, and Tony & Annette Morris as well as some former students from Central & Memorial High Schools.

Roberta Wagel reported, we had a pretty good turnout for the field trip. The owners of the park were absolutely

wonderful and opened the entire park to us. We panned for gems, dug for rocks and fossils, took a living cave tour, toured a museum and for the adventurous hiked 1/4+ mile through the woods and creek beds (and poison ivy) to look for druze. One of the highlights was the ziplining course. Bob Hicks now holds the record for the oldest person to zip the course.

Julia Allande wrote: Sister Sarah and her friend came from Shreveport, Louisiana for a vsist of a few days for Easter and Mother's 96th birthday. After they left brother John and his soon-to-be -official-wife arrived for a visit and to celebrate Mother's birthday. Brother James stopped by on his way home to Austin and was present for the official marriage ceremony (on the patio of the Starbucks at the Library downtown). A lady having lunch bought cake pops for everyone )"You can't have a wedding without a CAKE!) and the officiate put the wrong month on the certificate (so

we had to redo the paperwork the next day) so I tell everyone they were married on Thursday and Friday the 25 and 26th of April! The following day sister Becky came in from Atlanta for a visit (and to celebrate Mother's birthday). While John and Demaris and Becky were here we went to Norman for the Canal Zone Society pignic and to Wooloroc for the day and ate bison burgers. Becky and I spent the next 7 days in the hospital with Mother (uti). Mother is home now and doing better. Everyone has gone home.

While attending the Wichita Rock & Mineral Show, Wayne Mouser met Debby Moore, a member of the Wichita club. She said what she enjoys about the hobby is going to schools and talking about rocks & fossils with children. She said Mary Clough had recently given her some “rattlesnake eggs” (actually, they are gypsum nodules) that are found near Little Sahara Park near Waynoka, Oklahoma. She put them in a basket and laid a snake skin over the “eggs” and told

her grandchildren to go look in the basket. While they were looking she had something else that made a little noise and they thought for sure hamburgers “eggs” were hatching out. She told me she had a good time with other children and adults showing off the hatching “rattlesnake eggs”. We had a good visit...

Ian Kirk, a 14-year old Pebble Pup and Junior Rock-hound of the Year, son of TRMS members Dianne and Michael Kirk, on Monday, 13 May 2019 was awarded the rank of Eagle in Boy Scouts. Earning 21 merit badges, of which 13 are mandatory, is part of the requirement for Eagle. Ian has completed 34 badges. Those that attended the grab bag party May 25th were: Steve & Donna & Nathan Loffer, Kay Waterman, Holly Proctor, Steve & Sharon Richards, Larry & Roberta Wagle, Ben & Liz Thomas, Billy McBay, Roxanna Chamberlin,

Martha Becker, Chester & Elaine Lee, Penny Richardson, Connie Cassity, Wayne Mouser. After filling 1004 grab bags, everyone enjoyed hamburgers & hot dogs plus all the fixings and great dessert.

Article III. Section 1

Article V, Section 3

This proposal was approved by the TRMS Board on April 02, 2019 and should be provided to TRMS members

as a newsletter article/notice, prior to voting on it at a General Meeting. The target date for the vote is set as June

10, 2019.

A request has been made to revise the By-laws to allow for the Board Installation Ceremony to happen at the

December General Meeting. The request to allow for a December ceremony is reasonable. It also seems reasonable to

add wording allowing the Board to shift event dates when necessary. Article III gives the Board authority to change the

date, time, or place of a General or Board Meeting, with an implication that notice be given prior to the change.

ARTICLE III - MEETINGS 1. Regular monthly General Meetings shall be held on the second Monday of each month and regular monthly Board

Meetings will be held on the Tuesday of the month immediately preceding the General Meeting, unless some other date is designated by the Board of Directors and communicated to the membership.

As to the Board Installation Ceremony, the By-laws currently state:

ARTICLE V - BOARD 3. The newly elected Board of Directors shall assume the duties of their offices on January 1

st. The newly elected Board

of Directors shall meet jointly with the outgoing Board of Directors the first Board meeting of the year, with their formal installation taking place at the January regular meeting.

Recommendation – Change Article III.1 to read:

ARTICLE III - MEETINGS 1. Regular monthly General Meetings shall be held on the second Monday of each month and regular monthly Board

Meetings will be held on the Tuesday of the month immediately preceding the General Meeting, unless some other date, time or place is designated by the Board of Directors and communicated to the membership. The authority to change meeting schedules includes changing event dates for dues, elections, reports, fiscal activity and other Society functions when necessary, as well as the obligation to inform the membership of the change as soon as possible.

Change Article V.3 to read:

ARTICLE V - BOARD 3. The newly elected Board of Directors shall assume the duties of their offices on January 1

st. The newly elected Board

of Directors should try to meet jointly with the outgoing Board of Directors the first Board meeting of the year, with a formal installation taking place at a regular meeting, held up to three months after the election.

Hey, we are seeking an editor for the T-Town Rockhound.

After I retired from working, I felt like I would have lots of time

to concentrate on all the things I missed doing when I

was employed. Boy, was I wrong! There are not enough

hours in the day! My grandchildren, Master Garden

projects and volunteering, and other plans to travel and

accomplish all I would like to do—too much on my plate!

The club is doing great, and I am confident the new editor

will eclipse anything I have accomplished in the past 10 years.

Absolutely I will help the new editor in any way possible. Thank you for your written contributions and support!
