Join in the fun at Carl’s Annual Soiree This Mensa tradition continues for another year;

Carl Masthay will again host a September party. These parties have always been lively. If you haven’t yet attended, try this one and have a great time.

As is customary, Mensa will provide soda and beer. The free beer will include a selection of foreign beers and domestic microbrews. Please bring a tasty snack to share and any special beverages you may require.

Carl has a large driveway with lots of space for parking. He strongly re-quests that guests using the driveway park at a 45-degree angle. This ar-rangement allows anyone to leave at any time and also accommodates lots of cars.

Be there—the party begins at 7:00 p.m., the FIRST SATURDAY, Septem-ber 5, at 838 Larkin Ave. in Creve Coeur, St. Louis County. Larkin runs paral-lel to Spoede Road one block west of it and immediately south of Olive Blvd. Carl Masthay: (314) 432-4231

•Our annual TRIVIA NIGHT to benefit our scholarship fund is happening Saturday, Octo-ber 3. Gather a table of eight, register to re-serve a table, and have a great night of fun. Volunteers are still needed. Yes, you can play and volunteer!

•The Holiday Party has been scheduled at Mike and Rose Smith’s house on December 12. Save the date.

The Regional Gathering plans are in the works. Would you like to help? Come to the planning meeting, September 9, or call Jackie, 636.386.3113. Big and little volunteer opportu-nities are available.

I want to thank all the members who are working hard to plan and host these special events and the regular SIGs.

What activity can folks do that combines high tech know-how with the great outdoors? No, it isn’t playing Guitar Hero around the camp-fire. Geocaching is a family-friendly outing, or singular obsession, that is sweeping the world.

During the August Gathering, Laura DeWeese organized a demon-stration and discussion. “I like that it is an activity for families that gets you outdoors,” Laura explained. Joining Laura were fellow members of the St. Louis Area Geocachers Association (SLAGA), Roger Bar-nes, Kirk Yates and Sue Yates. They explained what Geocaching is all about. Using a handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver and personal computers, geocachers use coordinates given on a web-site to find small geocaches (pronounced “gee-oh-cashes”) or hidden

treasures. The receivers use a method called triliteration with the GPS satellites, positioned around the earth, to pinpoint the locations within about 20 feet, then participants

use their own judgment and hunting skills to find the treasure.

The geocaches, usually containing a log-book and small trinkets, can be hidden in vary-ing degrees of difficulty and terrain. After find-ing the caches, the participants share their experiences online. Since she began seeking these little treasures in 2002, Laura has found over 300.

Although previously for other purposes, this high-tech scavenger hunt was started in May 2000 by a man named Mike Teague. Teague later teamed up with a programmer from Seattle, Jeremy Irish, and created a Geocaching website, www.geocaching.com, and the geo-mania was born. There are currently over 875,000 active geocaches worldwide and over 4,000 in Missouri, alone.

Kirk Yates’ love of the game has led him to find over 700 geo-caches over the past five years, winning state competitions and travel-ing hundreds of miles across the nation. Yates says that his passion for Geocaching stems from that fact that “it gets you out in areas that you never would have seen otherwise. It’s kind of neat stuff; you’ll go places you never would have thought to go.”

Geocaches are hidden all over - in county parks, on bridges, in the stores, etc., and the website gives participants general information on what to expect in their hunt. Roger Barnes said that he and his wife prefer the unusual. “We don’t care so much about the ones in subur-bia. We want to get out to the ones in the countryside.”

If you want to explore your adventure side, check it out. Visit www.geocaching.com or www.geostl.com for more information. Hiking trail at Castlewood Park located in Ballwin, Mo.

Caching in on healthy adventures By Rebekah Krumrey

During the July 18 Gathering, seamstress Sheila Lenkman showed off this amazing crea-tion which includes a built-in bustle and stays, offering a quick change. Lenkman has been with The Repertory Thea-tre of St. Louis for many years, as well as worked in other venues. She spoke to us about costumes used in stage and film, as well as those worn in costume competitions around the country at Fan-run Science Fiction and Fantasy Conventions. Lenkman and her husband, Scott Corwin, direct the Masquerade at Ar-chon, St. Louis’ Science Fic-tion/Fantasy Convention. The convention is October 2-4 at the Collinsville Convention Center. For more information, visit www.archon.stl.org.

NAME THE EVENT & WIN! It has been called the Monthly Gathering or Monthly Meeting for as long as we can remember. Pretty boring name, eh? So we want to change it and we (SLAM’s board) are asking for suggestions for a more exciting name. In order to entice partici-pation, we are offering a $50 prize to the SLAM member who comes up with the name that we use. Send your entries in by October 15 to: [email protected]. Using an odd sym-bol for “The event formerly known as ‘The Monthly Gathering’ (TEFKATMG)” has already been men-tioned and rejected.

15, Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. COMEDY SIG 9421 Minerva Ave., Over-land, Mo. For those unfamiliar, “Strangers with Candy” is intentionally an after-school-special on acid. Amy Sedaris stars as Jeri Blank - a 46-year old who picks up where her life left off before going to prison 32 years ago and is back in school as a freshman. Joining her are other “Exit 57” alumni, Steven Colbert and Paul Dinello, as closet-gay teachers, “Second City” alumnus Greg Holliman as the arrogant princi-pal and veteran character actress Deborah Rush as Jeri’s apathetic, detached step-mother. There is a surrealistic level of self-abortion and addle-mindedness in all the characters and it’s all presented as a par-able for adolescents. If done wrong, it could get downright creepy, but the writers and cast pull it off with a winding, intricate wit. Example line: “Maybe it's time to stop not doing what you pretended you can do and can't, and start doing the thing that you can't do, but can no longer pretend that you can.” Join the fun! [BYOB, STS, WBC, DS, NHA] Jack Lippold 314.428.4811 [email protected]

17, Thursday, Noon, MID-COUNTY LUNCH BUNCH First Watch - 742 North New Ballas Rd. Jack Lippold 314.428.4811 [email protected] [HA]

17, Thursday, 6:30 p.m., St. Charles Meet & Eat at El Mariachi Mexican Restaurant, 1934 Zumbehl Rd. in St. Charles. Contact [email protected] or 636-219-7255 to RSVP, even on the day of the event, so we can get a large enough table.

19, Saturday, 6 p.m. THE GATHERING Who is up for a field trip? This month’s program will be an introductory tour of Laumeier Sculp-ture Park, a 105-acre, open-air contemporary art museum in South County. Some of the works we’ll see are by internationally recognized artists, including Ernest Trova, Jonathan Borofsky, Johann Feilacher, Mark di Suvero and Niki de Saint Phalle. Since modern art places emphasis on representing emotions, themes, and abstraction, Laumeier’s artists experimented with new ways of seeing, fresh ideas about the nature of materials and about the func-tions of art. This is not intended to be an ordinary trip: bring your creative imagination, an inventive frame of mind and comfortable walk-ing shoes! Afterwards, repast for those who wish to participate at one of the 20+ restaurants within 5 minutes of the park. Directions to the Park: Laumeier is just 20 minutes from downtown St. Louis. The entry to Laumeier is at the intersection of Rott and Geyer Roads in Sunset Hills, just 1 block south of Watson on Geyer, at 12580 Rott Road • St. Louis, Mo. 63127

Rain date: sometime next spring, or by arrangement with the docent.

September Trip South-ish

South from St. Charles, that is. We’ve had some exciting times on the links this summer. Before summer passes into fall, the mini-golf league takes its act on the road to the In-field Fun Center on Sunday, September 20 at 2:00 p.m.. This exciting course and fun center is located at 2626 West-hills Park Dr. in Ellisville. In addition to mini-golf, there is a game room, batting cages, bumper boats, and go-karts. Bring the whole family and spend the day.

If you’re wondering how much fun we have at mini-golf, you can watch the video at www.YouTube.com. Search for “St Charles Mini Golf” and you will see our June adventure on the links. Bring your own handkerchief – it’s a tearjerker.

However, before we jet off to Ellisville, we will head to Mexico in spirit. There is no lacking of Mexican atmosphere at our monthly St. Charles Meet & Eat. On Thursday, Sep-tember 17 at 6:30 p.m. we will meet at El Mariachi Mexican Restaurant, located at 1934 Zumbehl Rd. The restaurant is just south of I-70 in the strip mall between Schnucks and Ace Hardware.

Please RSVP, even if it is the day of the event, so we can get a large enough table.

More and more people are joining us for mini-golf or din-ner. We hope that you will join us too. As always, if you have any questions or ideas, we want to hear about them. Contact us at [email protected] or by phone at 636-219-7255.

JUNE SIGS Comedy SIG: in attendance were SIG neophyte Jackie Boyce and semi-regular Judy Shimkus. We took in part 2 of Andy Richter Controls the Uni-verse. Jackie got a primer a couple of nights prior when we had a post-board meet-ing viewing. So Happy It’s Thursday: Good group attending the pizza jernt known as Pi! We got an appearance from the DeWeeses, Jackie Boyce, Judy Shimkus, Stan Waxel-man and transplanted-to-South-Dakota-former-Slammer Brad Baucom - who was in town. We also got a visit from Janette Cooperman, who was writing an article on Mensa for St. Louis magazine. And the pizza? Great; the crust was phenomenal with just the right touch of corn meal. However, the restaurant just did not have the un-Yuppified (do they still say that?) charm of Black Thorn. E-cubed SIG: regular Lin Leinecke and I did the retro bit with beer-batter chicken. Lin brought a fabulous corn-salad with chunks of celery, orange pepper and onion.

6 New SIG forming

Do you like to write? Do you wish you had a way to get some feedback on your work without paying expensive reading fees or signing up for time-consuming graduate seminars? If so, the Writ-ing SIG may be for you. This new SIG welcomes writers of all kinds--high school students to senior citizens, graphic novelists to graduate researchers, newbies to published authors. The more variety the better!

The plan is for everyone to share up to 15 pages of writing per month with fellow SIG members. We’ll exchange writing electroni-cally in the middle of the month and then meet at the end of the month to talk about what we’ve written and share our ideas in a group setting. Each group member will provide a short written cri-tique (including positive feedback and constructive criticism, as well as editing suggestions) of the work he or she has reviewed, as well as participate in a discussion about each piece.

Depending on the makeup of the group, members could also recommend possible markets for publication, share stories of suc-cess, and recommend writing books, workshops, contests, etc.

Our first meeting will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, September 28 at Dewey’s Pizza in University City, located on the corner of Delmar Ave. and North and South Rd. This will be an informal gathering where we can get to know each other and talk about what we want to get out of the SIG, where we want to meet, etc. No writing will be critiqued for this first meeting. Questions, sugges-tions, and RSVPs should be directed to Paulette Suhr via email: [email protected] or phone 314-387-7390.

New Mental TnT will be back in the next exciting issue of “MSLaneous.” There were so many new events, we ran out of room!

Within Your Ken:  RVC 4, Ken Silver, congratulates the 2009 Award winners Each September, I devote most of my col-

umn to congratulating the region’s award win-ners from the AG. As usual we earned more than our share, which makes me feel very proud.

Surprise, surprise, the Group of the Year (GOTYA) for the Class I, or largest groups, went to Chicago Area Mensa. I keep saying they should just retire it to them.

Sangamon Valley Mensa won the Innova-tive Owl for Outstanding Member Retention at 92%. Evansville Area Mensa received an Honorable Mention in that category.

Individual winners included a Chairman’s Certificate of Appreciation to Robin Crawford

for “taking on a thousand projects.” Barbara Kryvko (St. Louis Area Mensa) and Lessa Scherer also received certificates for their efforts.

The two Teresas, Gregory the LocSec, and Fisher the Editor, of Central Indiana Mensa were both nominated for the Publication Rec-ognition Program (PRP) Award in the category of Fiction. I had intended to sit with them at the Awards Luncheon and root them on, but they wanted AMC members seated together so they could be introduced, something new. Anyway, I am very happy for Teresa Fisher who won the award.

We also had two teams finish in the money in CultureQuest, which means within the top

20 of the about 100 teams competing. Cen-tral Indiana was 9th, Minnesota Mensa was 19th. I think that is the third time in the last four years for Minnesota.

I had been home for just a few days, when I turned around and headed back to Chicago for their Monthly Meeting, which includes a whole evening of events, typically on the last Saturday of the month. The next day, the Nibblers brunch SIG met at a posh golf club for their latest adventure. Teresa Tucker who organizes the group, was nice enough to re-schedule the brunch to coincide with the Monthly Meeting so I could join them. I had a great weekend with my Chicago friends! Ken

Did you know… less than $9 per year of your membership dues to American Mensa comes back to the local chapter? That’s barely enough to pay for the monthly newsletter, much less other expenses. Fundraisers, such as the R.G. and auctions, are what keeps SLAM going. If you’d like to help, but can’t support by attending or volunteering, consider making a donation. Send a check payable to St. Louis Area Mensa in care of our treasurer: Angie Doering, 801 Mary Jo Lane, Hazelwood, MO 63042. If you would like to “go green” and save the chapter money, contact American Mensa to update your profile to say you are willing to receive the MSLaneous electronically rather than via paper copy. This newsletter is available online in the “Members Only” section 24/7, as well as an archive of previous issues.
