Bennington Free Library’s “Volunteer of the Year” award was con-veyed posthumously to Catherine McCleod at the Library’s annual volunteer reception. Her daughter, Patricia McLeod accepted the award from Library Director, Lynne Fonteneau McCann (left) and Library Board Chair and Trustee, Barth Vander Els. Catherine was recognized for her many years of service to the Library at a ceremony on April 23.

Harpsichordist Victor Hill will present a solo recital at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute on Sunday, May 16, at 3 p.m. Admission is free.

Featured on the program are two contrasting works of J. S. Bach, the sunny “Partita in G major” and the intense “Toccata in F-sharp minor.” Also included are nine Sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti.

Hill plays the double-manual harpsichord of 18th century design that was custom built for him in 1997 by Richard Kingston of Asheville, North Carolina. He tunes it himself in a common 18th century pitch and temperament.

Hill was for 40 years Professor of Mathematics at Williams College. He studied in Amsterdam with the noted Dutch harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt and has played some 900 concerts throughout the United States and in Europe.

The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts.The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (daily in July and August). WBTN Offers On-Air Marketplace Each Saturday Morning

WBTN 1370 AM, non-profit community radio for the greater Bennington area, is now airing “Tri State Bargains,” an on-air market-place for people to buy, sell and trade items, as well as a source for local tag sales and other summer markets.

“Tri State Bargains” is a local, live call-in program hosted by Brian Dempsey and serving Western Massachusetts, Eastern New York, and Southern Vermont. Williams Handbell Choir to PerformThe Williams College Department of Music presents the Handbell

Choir on Friday, May 14, at 8 p.m. in Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall. This free event is open to the public.

Led by three Williams College students, the Williams Handbell Choir offers a varied program that highlights the versatility of this group. Handbell choirs have developed over three hundred years, a musi-cal specialty that has its own techniques and specialized instruments, just like any other discipline. Hardly limited to either classical musical repertoire or church music, this group presents a concert of both the traditional and contemporary. Old favorites like Amazing Grace and Shenandoah share the program with works of Handel, Lady Gaga, Lennon and McCartney, Holst, Joplin and Rachmaninoff. Other titles include pieces composed specifically for bell choir as well as arrange-ments by conductor Alex Wheelock ‘13, who also leads the Handbell Quintet, a smaller formation within the choir. Conductors Paloma Marin ‘12 and Inez Tan ‘12 share leadership duties to present this pro-gram rich in musical enjoyment.

The Handbell Choir is a student-led group advised by Lyell B. Clay Artist-in-Residence in vocal studies and Director of Choral Activities Bradley Wells. The ensemble consists of 11 or 12 students and rehearses weekly on a five-octave set of Schulmerich handbells. Repertoire con-sists of arrangements and original compositions, mostly of secular or seasonal holiday music. The choir participates in the annual Service of Lessons and Carols along with the Concert and Chamber Choirs, and performs in studio recitals and at various off-campus locations.

An Evening with Jonathan Mahler to Benefit the Bennington Free Library

Come and meet bestselling author Jonathan Mahler, as he discusses his legal thriller “The Challenge: Hamdan v. Rumsfeld and the Fight Over Presidential Power” at a special fundraiser for the Bennington Free Library.

Mahler, a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine, is also the author of the best-selling book “Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bronx is Burning,” a 2004 New York Times Notable Book that was adapted as an eight-part dramatic miniseries for ESPN starring John Turturro.

“The Challenge” tells the inside story of an incredible mismatch: the maverick lawyers for one accused enemy combatant versus all the legal resources of the U.S. government. At its center are Charles Swift and Neal Katyal, a young navy lawyer and a law professor who, soon after 9/11, decide to sue the president of the United States on behalf of an accused Yemeni terrorist. The entire system was stacked against them, and even Swift’s superiors urged him to plead guilty. But in the spring of 2006, the case made it to the Supreme Court and won. The landmark ruling has been called the Court’s most important decision ever on presidential power and the rule of law.

The event will be on Saturday, June 5, at 7 p.m. in the Ada Perasky Education Center of the Bennington Museum and will include open discussion, refreshments, and a book signing. Tickets are $25 per person with all proceeds benefiting the Bennington Free Library. The presen-tation is sponsored by The Bank of Bennington, Wills Insurance, and the Bennington Banner. Thoughts on Mother’s DayFor the most part, I think Mother’s

Day is a nice opportunity for children with mothers still living to drop them a card, have brunch, or celebrate the day in a special way. But it isn’t an opportunity for mothers to drop guilt on their kids.

I don’t like the pressure put on young couples to have children. It is terribly unfair to those couples to have relatives nagging them about something so private. I have a friend whose sister asks her every time they talk if she’s going to be a grand-mother yet. Doesn’t her sister have a clue how rude that question is? My friend said she braces herself for that question every time her sister calls and it’s been going on for years!

Childbearing and being a mother are two different things. People who don’t like children should certainly avoid having a child. It’s heart-breaking that there are so many unwanted children bourn by parents who just don’t give a damn. They take their drugs and drink their beers and never give a thought to the children.

Some couples have difficulty for a medical reason. And some couples don’t want to bear children for personal reasons. I can think of several: the world is overpopulated; the world is not a nice place to be in right now; the cost of giving a child a secure home, decent welfare and a good education are beyond their means (in other words, they just can’t afford to have children).

Then there’s every woman’s ticking clock. She knows about the clock without someone continually reminding her (like my friend’s sister). All of us know of some woman who has to get her claws into a sensitive vein by asking that none-of-her-damn-business question, “Don’t you plan on having children?” in her best Cruella Deville tone.

Now I’m going to dis on the “Wonder Mother.” Every woman reading this knows someone like the wonder mother. Men never see it. She’s the mother who wants you to believe she’s the ultimate woman because of her fertility. She has a dozen kids, but by the time they’re grown up and in their 40s she still can’t stop talking about her pregnancies. She knows everything there is to know about rearing children and she’ll tell you that, too. The only thing she can talk about is herself and her pregnan-cies. This is how she has defined her life.

I’m thinking today too, about mothers and fathers who have lost a child. That pain never goes away. They won’t be receiving cards or flowers or go to brunch. Mother’s Day is sort of a smack in the face to them and to those who want children and are unable. And I think about children with parents who are absent in their lives.

I am blessed to have two loving children. We have wonderful times together and we’re very close. We always were a close family but now even more so since my husband died. It doesn’t matter that John lives in Florida and Catherine in Albany. We laugh and cry together. Our hearts are woven together and tightly connected and that’s such a deep comfort to me as I age.

I don’t make myself a good mother, my children do. Thank you, Catherine and John.

Nancy Willard Memorial Grant Check

Presented at DVESOn April 30, Pettee Memorial Library Treasurer Louis Clark (far

right) presented a check for $500 to Deerfield Valley Elementary School teacher Amy Swanson in memory of the library’s late treasurer Nancy Darden Willard. Besides being treasurer and a library trustee for nearly two decades, Mrs. Willard was a long time volunteer at the school and also a master gardener. The Nancy Willard Memorial Grant is given to be used for a scholarship or other learning opportunity relat-ed to gardening, biology or the great outdoors. The school plans to use the funds to purchase a GrowLab, a compact indoor gar-dening facility which will be used by DVES students and participants in the WINGS program. Sever-al members of the Willard family were present at the presentation.

Jamaica Cottage Shop to Shape

Bennington, considered “the green,” has been known by locals in recent years for its Christmas lights, summer concerts, and annual Mayfest. The property was once the site of the Harte Theater which burned down in the late 80s and has been vacant ever since. When Duane Greenawalt purchased the Harte Lot a few years ago, he had ideas of what he wanted to do with the land but no concrete plan. That is, until recently when he made a call to Jamaica Cottage Shop to discuss the possibility of installing small cottages and sheds for local art-ists, craftsmen, and tradesmen to display and sell their wares.

Established in 1995 and cel-ebrating its 15th year, Jamaica Cottage Shop, a Vermont post and beam company, uses native hemlock and kiln-dried eastern white pine lumber to build cot-tages, garden sheds, storage sheds, livestock shelters, and woodbins. JCS is proud to support local land owners, foresters, loggers and sawmills. The unique stor-age and garden shed designs are original creations, all of which are manufactured at the factory in South Londonderry, Vermont.

Alan Harwood, delivery driver for JCS recalls, “I used to come see movies at the old Harte Theater when I was a teenager. It’s great to see the space being utilized for the community in such a posi-tive way.”

The Bennington Free Library’s first installation of Wallworks: Art at the Library, will open with an artists’ reception on Sunday, May 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Library. Planned as an ever-changing exhibit, “Wallworks” will provide an opportunity for patrons to view and enjoy art and other media while visiting the Library, and to learn more about the many talented artists who live and work in our community.

The “Wallworks” inaugural exhibit features the landscape and still life paintings of Berta Burr. The daughter of an enthusiastic ama-teur painter, Berta Burr was raised in a house-hold where art materials were never in short supply. Saturday classes at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, and a gen-eral atmosphere of encouragement informed her youth.

Berta’s first realization that she might have a career in art came from her collaboration with her husband, Walter Burr, a harpsichord maker. Harpsichords of the 17th and 18th century were often outstand-ing works of visual art with lid interiors painted by major artists. The opportunity to decorate harpsichords as a professional painter while still in her early twenties provided a unique and formative experience. By following the approach Walter used to build harpsichords using

traditional methods and materials, she was able to teach herself to paint from the bottom up - progressing from finishing and gilding, to decora-tion, and finally the painting she does today.

Walter and Berta have made harpsi-chords in Hoosick, New York, for over thirty years. Their instruments have been used in countless concerts and record-ings in both the United States and Europe. Walter’s attention has turned to restora-tion in recent years and an Italian harpsi-chord from 1610, one of the instruments that Walter and Berta restored for Vassar College, is among the most notable exam-ples. A 1539 Italian harpsichord that is thought to be the oldest harpsichord in playing condition is another very impor-tant restoration by the Burrs.

Join us for a unique opportunity to meet a talented area artist and view her work in an informal setting. The exhibit

Grafton Historical Society

The Grafton Historical Society will hold its May meeting at the Grafton Town Hall on May 19, at 7 p.m.

The Society will host Rensselaer County Historian Kathy Sheehan who will present a talk on the letters of the Tilley, Littlefield, and Huntley families.

In 2003, Elizabeth Losa, a descendant of the above families, donated two bankers boxes of letters and documents associated with these longtime Grafton fam-ilies. The letters include descrip-tions of the Littlefield’s daugh-ters working in the silk mills of western Massachusetts, ice har-vesting business in Grafton, and other daily life issues including a two day carriage ride to Troy during a snowstorm.

Do you have good, used items cluttering up your home? Are there store-quality items in your closet that you want to sell? Would you like to help out an organization that is working to improve the Hoosick Falls community with programming for youth and families? Well, now you can!

The Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition (HAYC3) is holding its first “Hoosick Consigns & Tags” sale on Saturday, May 22 in conjunction with the townwide tag sale day. The sale will be held at the Youth Center, 115 Church Street, Hoosick Falls, New York, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Maps of other sales in the community participating in the townwide tag sale will be available at the center, free of charge.

All proceeds of the sale will benefit HAYC3 and its community pro-grams. There are three ways for community members to participate:

• Consign – Store quality, lightly used items will be accepted for consignment. All items must be tagged with the seller’s registration number and the sale price will be split 70/30 with HAYC3 (seller gets 70 percent of sale price). For information on the types of items being accepted (primarily clothing, shoes, and baby items such as strollers) and drop-off procedures, contact HAYC3 at 518-686-9050 or e-mail [email protected]. • Donate – Items may also be donated for the tag sale. We are accept-ing good quality items including clothing, furniture, housewares, and books in good condition. Items for donation may be brought to the Youth Center during the week of Saturday, May 15-Friday, May 21. The best times to drop off are on weekdays from 3-6 p.m., but please call 518-686-9050 to make alternative arrangements. On Saturday, May 15 a HAYC3 representative will be at the site from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. for drop-offs. HAYC3 reserves the right to refuse any item that staff members do not believe will sell.

Poetry Reading in PownalLocal writers will read their poetry on Sunday, May 16, at 2 p.m. in

the Pownal American Legion in Pownal, in honor of Pownal’s 250th anniversary. The public is invited to hear them and enjoy refreshments. A booklet with the poetry will be available to everyone, and anniversary mugs will be for sale along with copies of the recent publication of old photos of Pownal, published by Arcadia Press.

5-Hour Prelicensing ClassThe Northeast New York Safety and Health Council will sponsor

the Prelicensing Course at the Hoosick Falls Health Center, Danforth Street, Hoosick Falls, New York, on Wednesday, May 19 at 3:30 p.m.

This program requires a pre-registration fee of $40 payable to NENY Safety and a valid NYS driver’s permit. Successful completion of this class, which includes passing a test, provides the student with the nec-essary paperwork (MV-278) to take NYS Driver’s Test and is valid for one year.

‘The Business of Being Born’The Hubbard Hall Curiosity Forum Documentary Film Series con-

tinues on Friday, May 28 with the next film in the series: “The Business of Being Born.” The film begins at 7:00 p.m. and will be shown in the Beacon Feed Building, behind Hubbard Hall. The screening is free and open to everyone with donations in support of the series greatly appre-ciated. “The Business of Being Born,” from 2008, is not rated and has an 87 minute run time.

Birth is a miracle, a rite of passage, a natural part of life. But birth is also big business.

Compelled to explore the subject after the delivery of her first child, actress Ricki Lake recruits filmmaker Abby Epstein to question the way American women have babies. The film interlaces intimate birth stories with surprising historical, political and scientific insights and shock-ing statistics about the current maternity care system. When director Epstein discovers she is pregnant during the making of the film, the journey becomes even more personal.

Following the film, midwife Kathleen Breault will lead a discussion and question and answer session. Chesterfield Historical Society The Chesterfield Historical Society will meet on Thursday, May 20.

The program topic is: Regulators or Rebels? Shays’ Rebellion in Western Massachusetts. 1776 had seen the birth of a new nation but, by 1786, in the depths of an economic depression, the promises of independence seemed to be slipping away for many citizens in western Massachusetts. Towns in Worcester, Old Hampshire and Berkshire County became the anvil on which a new rebellion was forged. This civil war, contested by heroes of the Revolution, threatened to plunge the Commonwealth into anarchy only a few years after the war for American independence had ended. The people of Shays’ Rebellion offer us a glimpse into a tumul-tuous period when the survival of the new United States was neither destined nor assured. Speaker is Reba-Jean Shaw-Pichette, a museum educator from the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association, Deerfield’s historical society now in its 130th year.

Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the program starting at 7:30 at the Chesterfield Senior Center. The menu will include roast pork, mashed potatoes, gravy, asparagus, rolls and a dessert. Cost per person is $10. The public is invited to join for dinner and/or the evening program.

Free Course for High School Students Offered Through CCV

The Community College of Vermont will be offering a free course, Introduction to College Studies, to area high school students beginning in May. The course is designed to engage high school-aged students in thinking critically about learning and education. The readings and assignments focus on strengthening skills in civil discourse, interactive discussion, critical reading, and analytical writing. The course meets twice weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays, now through June 22 from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.

The course will help students explore the skills and expectations needed to be successful at the college level. Students will have opportu-nities to learn and practice time management and study skills, explore financial aid options, and understand the college application process. Students who successfully complete the course are eligible to apply for a tuition voucher to take an additional course at any of the Vermont State Colleges.

The Hubbard Hall Curiosity Forum’s “Curious Kids” series presents our friends from the Pember Museum under the Community Tent on Sunday, May 23 from 10 a.m.-noon. See and touch specimens from the Pember Collection and learn about some of the fascinating wildlife of the Adirondack region with Pember Museum Educator Bernadette Hoffman.

NorShaft Lions Pancake Breakfast The NorShaft Lions Club is holding their Fourth Annual Pancake

Breakfast on Sunday, June 6 from 8 a.m. - noon at the Shaftsbury Elementary School, Buck Hill Road, south Shaftsbury. The Breakfast includes pancakes, bacon, sausage, Vermont maple syrup, juice and cof-fee, tea or milk. The fee is $6 per person. There is no charge for children under 8.

The Brain Show is Coming to Hoosick Falls Central School!

The Brain Show, the hottest interactive educational trivia game show in the country is coming to Hoosick Falls Central School for a night of fun and excitement for the whole family. Sponsored by the HFCS PTA, The Brain Show has performed to hundreds of thousands of people throughout the United States. Using a full size $40,000 stage set, contestants feel like they are playing a real live TV game show.

The Brain Show Educational Assembly will be visiting the students of Hoosick Falls Central School during the day to make educational presentations that include questions at the student’s grade level provided by teachers across the country. The Brain Show Family Fun Night performance is the pop culture version of the daytime student assembly where families compete against families. The professionals of The Brain Show randomly draw names to select contestants for the night’s performance.The Family Fun Night performance has become so successful because of the high volume of audience participation.

In addition to awarding a door prize, The Brain Show has teamed up with Cabot Cheese in a promotion to hand out individually wrapped cheese, coupons and gift certificates for Cabot Cheese products. The fun happens Friday, May 14, in the high school auditorium from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., and admission is free.

Catbird Studio Holding Tent Sale to Benefit Chikima Foundation

The Catbird Studio of Bennington will hold a tent sale at its former location in Manchester on Saturday and Sunday, May 22, 23 and May 29 and 20. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Chikima Foundation in Moshi, Tanzania, an NGO that provides vocational training and basic business skills to underprivileged women.

Fredrick Chikima, a professional tour operator from Tanzania, started the foundation two years ago to provide opportunities for girls in the rural villages where he grew up at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The foundation operates a sewing school equipped to teach a class of 12 for a six-month course as well as a store where products made by the students can be sold or donated to local families in need. They also pro-vide school uniforms for orphaned and needy children so that they may attend primary school. Mr. Chikima will be present at the first weekend of the sale to answer any questions about his work in Tanzania.

Jewelry from Tanzania will be available for purchase as well as examples of the cloth bags produced at the sewing school. Funds raised from the sale will be directly used to purchase materials for the school and sewing machines for graduates.

The sale will also include a wide range of Catbird Studio’s inventory all priced below wholesale cost. The tent will be located at 4181 Main Street in Manchester, directly across from the Orvis Flagship Store. Hours of the sale are 9 to 5 all four days. For further information, call 802-442-3359.

The third display of the four part exhibition series, “Seventeen Towns with Seventeen Stories to Tell,” has opened at the Washington County Historical Society, featuring the County Towns of Fort Edward, Kingsbury, White Creek and Whitehall, New York.

The Fort Edward Historical Association has chosen to loan Wing and Northup family objects from the Association’s collection. Members of these families contributed generously to the histories of Fort Edward, Sandy Hill and Glens Falls through their enterprise, structures, and business leadership. Others who followed in Fort Edward enhanced the families’ legacies by founding the Historical Association for preser-vation of Fort Edward’s history. The Federal style 1815 Wing-Northup House, a former family residence and site of this exhibition, is currently the headquarters of the Washington County Historical Society.

Hudson Falls in Kingsbury is celebrating its 200th birthday this year. The New York State legislature created the Village of Sandy Hill in 1810, but 100 years later in 1910 the Village voted the name be changed to Hudson Falls. Five enlarged photographs represent some of the chang-es along the way.

Set among White Creek’s state and rural forests, several sites today offer spiritual renewal and retreat opportunities. The Communities

Running of the Tories in ArlingtonThe Arlington Recreation Park, in collaboration with the Battenkill

Valley Runners, will hold the first annual “Running of the Tories,” a 5K Run/Walk Trail Race, on Sunday, August 8, in Arlington, Vermont. Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers and special awards given for children, for the oldest finisher and for catching a Tory. There will also be awards for the top five walkers. The race will start at 9:00 a.m. with registration beginning 7:30 a.m.

Dick Bailey, Race Chairperson, said the “Running of the Tories” was based on Arlington’s Revolutionary War history when the Tories were chased out of town and their lands confiscated by the patriots. The 5K race will start near a Tory homestead and follow Tory Lane on a dirt road through the woods fronting the famous Battenkill River and end on the lawn in the Arlington Recreation Park.

Race participants will be able to use the Park’s facilities for picnick-ing, swimming, golf, tennis and canoeing or kayaking on the Battenkill River. Overnight accommodations will be available at Arlington’s Inns, Bed and Breakfasts, and local campgrounds.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Arlington Recreation Park. Same day entry fees are $15.00 for individuals, $5.00 for children under age 14, and $35.00 for a special family of four package. Seventeen Towns with Seventeen Stories to Tellof New Skete and the Pompanuck Farm periodically welcome visitors to enjoy their sites and activities. In addition, biographical notes and copies of paintings by Grandma Moses are on display. She painted Washington County country images, real and imagined, from her White Creek home.

The Town of Whitehall highlights its history in two parts, the first From Shipyard to Flotilla, 1775-1776, a year of significance in naval construction and service to our young nation. And secondly, by selecting images on historical postcards, Whitehall further documents its legacies of growth and change through the 19th and 20th centuries, in industry, through “castles,” through immigration, on farms, on the canal, and shipping by rail.

The exhibits have been designed and materials provided by Paul McCarty (Fort Edward), Paul Loding (Kingsbury), Ruth Gillen (White Creek), and Carol Senecal (Whitehall). The exhibition will continue through June.
