Christmas Eve Hours at Vermont Post Offices

All Vermont post offices will be open December 24, but some will shorten lobby hours Christmas Eve. Regular mail delivery for December 24 will be unaffected by the change.

“As many businesses close early Christmas Eve,” said Deborah Essler, NH/VT district manager for customer service and sales, “the number of customers visiting post office lobbies greatly diminishes.”

As such, except for the following offices — which will remain open until 5 p.m. — all Vermont post offices will close at noon on December 24: Burlington Elmwood Station (05401); Newport P.O. (05855); Bennington P.O. (05201); Rutland P.O. (05701); Brattleboro P.O. (05301); St. Johnsbury P.O. (05819); Montpelier P.O. (05602); White River Jct. P.O. (05001).

Essler said noon will be the last collection for December 24 process-ing for mail that is deposited in postal service blue collection boxes and post office building lobby receptacles. Revised hours will be posted at each post office. Commercial customers are asked to check with their Bulk Mail Acceptance Units for December 24 hours of operation.

To obtain the phone number of a specific post office, customers may call 1-800-ASK-USPS.

Post offices will be closed December 25. Express Mail will be deliv-ered Christmas Day, and regular delivery will resume December 26.

Prelicensing Class OfferedThe Northeast New York Safety & Health Council will sponsor the

Prelicensing Course at the Hoosick Falls Health Center in Hoosick Falls, New York on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 4 p.m. sharp. This program requires a pre-registration fee of $35 payable to NENY Safety and a valid NYS driver’s permit. Successful completion of this class, which includes passing a test, provides the student with the necessary paper-work (MV-278) to take the NYS Driver’s Test and is valid for one year. Christmas Carol Sing at Federated Church

All are welcome to join in worship at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 28 at The Federated Church of East Arlington on Ice Pond Road in East Arlington, Vermont. Belly Dance for Fitness and FunThe Hubbard Hall Dance

and Movement Program in Cambridge, New York offers two belly dance based classes taught by certified personal trainer and international belly dancer Vicki Webberley beginning Wednesday, January 7, 2009.

Cleopatra’s Core Strengthening Exercise Class will meet on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for a seven-week term. East meets West in a class that combines belly dance moves with exercises to strengthen and tone the entire body while awak-ening the feminine spirit. Hip drops, circles, figure eights and shimmies put the joints and liga-ments of the lower back and hips through a full range of gentle, repetitive motions. Abdominal undulations, belly rolls and crunches help participants regain core tone and strength. This class is for women of all ages, fitness levels and body types. Participants are asked to bring five-pound or eight-pound hand weights for upper body toning.

Cleopatra’s Dance Class will meet on Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., also for a seven-week term. This term of belly dance will focus on hip combinations, shimmies and veil work. No previous dance experi-ence is required, but a sense of rhythm is quite valuable. Expect to have fun while learning or reviewing belly dance moves of the hips, chest, arms and hands. The class will develop variations on hip drops and lifts and bring power to shimmies. Participants will discover how veil work expresses emotions and learn a three to four-minute dance rou-tine. Hip scarves and veils will be provided by the instructor.

The cost for each class is $63 for Hubbard Hall members and $70 for non-members. A single or drop-in session is $13 each. To register, call 518-677-2495.

CDC Students Hold Food Drive for BROC

Local business students, who are also members of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) at the Southwest Vermont Career Development Center (CDC) in Bennington, Vermont, recently held a food drive to benefit the Bennington-Rutland Opportunity Council (BROC). Over 400 items were collected from classes at the CDC, with the medical profes-sions program donating the most cans and winning a pizza party.

FBLA students loaded up a bus with food and were driven to BROC’s local office to personally carry in the bags.

Nicky Forest, adviser to FBLA, said she “is very proud of what these students accomplish every year for BROC — it’s a great com-munity service activity for them.”

FBLA is a nationally recog-nized student leadership organi-zation, and the local Bennington chapter currently has 40 student members.

A visit to The Lincoln Family Home in Manchester, Vermont for Hildene Holiday Evenings on Sunday, Dec. 28 and Monday, Dec. 29 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. will provide guests with a rare glimpse of what “coming home for the Holidays” might have looked like at the turn of the century. The Lincoln’s home, built in 1905 by Robert Todd Lincoln, President Lincoln’s oldest and only child to survive to adult-hood, has the look and feel of the Gilded Age of which Robert and wife Mary Harlan were a part.

Led by Hildene Holiday deco-rating co-chairs, Amy Thebault and Corinne Knight, a dedicated volunteer committee has “decked the historic halls” and beyond with fresh pine garlands on the staircase banisters, wreaths aplenty and yards of Victorian satin ribbon. The traditional twelve-foot Christmas tree is a beautiful sight in the welcom-ing center hall, filled with poin-settias. In addition, area nurs-ery, floral and interior design-ers from across The Shires of Vermont have woven their indi-vidual brands into the rooms of the century-old Vermont retreat

that Robert called his ancestral home and that three generations of Lincolns inhabited for 70 years. This year’s guest decorators are Thebault Design, Equinox Valley Nursery, Tara Pollio Floral Design, Hildene Flower Ladies, Lisa Laberge, Nancy Bishop Floral Design and Mettowee Mill Nursery.

With a little help from Mother Nature, guests may have the added benefit of seeing the house in a spectacular snow-covered setting. Mistress of the house Mary Harlan Lincoln described one scene this way in a letter writ-ten to close friend, Laura Hollister, on December 31, 1915: “You’ve no idea how beautiful it is up here today... everything covered with the whitest, purest snow I ever saw, and this morning in a beauti-ful filmy white lace, studded with diamonds... Mr. Lincoln said he never in his whole life saw such a beautiful sight.”

Yearly Hildene Holiday

Evenings bring guests from near and far to see The Lincoln Family Home illuminated with candlelight and filled with the musical sounds of the sea-son. The Tall Spire Bellringers from Manchester’s First Congregational Church will play on both evenings from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Alternating with the bells will be guest organists playing the Lincoln’s 1,000-pipe Aeolian organ from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on both evenings. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the organ, a birthday gift from Robert to Mary in 1908. Such an instru-ment was considered to be a sta-tus symbol at the turn of the century, and this organ is the oldest residential pipe organ in the country still located in the original place for which it was purchased.

There will be a good luck New Year’s bonfire just east of the

porte cochere, and hot cider and Mrs. Murphy’s donuts await visi-tors fireside in the Ski Touring Center. There will be carolers at the center on Sunday from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Whether on foot, by shuttle or on the big red farm wagon, guests will begin and end their holiday evening in the Welcome Center located in the Lincoln’s 100-year-old car-riage barn.

Admission to this year’s Holiday Evenings is $15 for adults and $5 for children under 14. Members, volunteers and children under 5 are free. The Lincoln Family Home at Hildene is open daily from 9:30 to 4:30. (Closed December 24, 25 and 26 for the holiday.) Regular admis-sion is $12.50 for adults and $5 for youths 6 to14. Children under 6, Hildene members and volunteers are admitted free.

Hildene Holiday Evenings

The public is invited to attend Christmas Eve services at the First Baptist Church in Bennington, Vermont on December 24 at 7 p.m. The service will feature traditional carols, the reading of Luke’s nativity story and the sing-ing of “Silent Night” as part of the candle lighting.

The Rev. Jerrod H. Hugenot, coordinating minister, will offer the homily, “Searching for Home.” A freewill offering will be taken to benefit the Bennington Free Health Clinic, a new initia-tive of the Greater Bennington Interfaith Community Services, Inc., to provide health care to

area residents who are uninsured or underinsured.

Christmas Eve ends the holy season of Advent, the time of watching, waiting and preparing for the Nativity of Jesus. For the past four Sundays, Christians have lit candles each week, draw-ing themselves closer to the holy day of Christmas. First Baptist has spent part of its Advent jour-ney continuing its winter project of donating winter clothing to Molly Stark Elementary School and celebrating the holy season through congregational events each weekend.

Bennington Area Habitat for Humanity (BAHFH) in Bennington County, Vermont is currently accepting applications from families who live in unsafe, overcrowded or inadequate housing and whose financial situations have made it impos-sible to gain funding from tra-ditional sources. Aware of the great need for affordable housing in Vermont, the affiliate is look-ing for families that are ready to assume the responsibilities of home ownership in partnership with Habitat.

This new home will be built in North Bennington, Vermont. Ideally, construction for this project will begin in the spring of 2009. Habitat homes are designed to meet the needs of the selected family, including handicapped accessibility. They might have two, three or four bedrooms, depending on fam-ily size. Upon completion of the home, the selected family assumes an interest-free mort-gage of approximately $100,000-$120,000 with payments spread over 20 to 30 years.

To qualify, applicants must: show very specific needs for decent, affordable housing; have a family income of no more than 60% of the county’s median income and no less than 30% (which varies according to size of family); be able to meet the financial requirements of Habitat home ownership; and have a

willingness to work in partner-ship with Habitat in a variety of ways. Applicants also must have resided or worked in Bennington County for at least one full year. Only one family will be selected.

Bennington Area Habitat is also always looking for qualified applicants who live on land they own or own undeveloped land on which Habitat could build. Those fitting either description are asked to contact Habitat.

BAHFH is a nonprofit orga-nization. It makes decisions locally, raises funds locally and helps local families. BAHFH has already collaborated with nine families, building homes in Pownal, East Arlington, Bennington, Shaftsbury, Winhall, Rupert and West Rupert, Vermont and Jackson, New York. Many unskilled volunteers help with the construction of Habitat homes. In addition, local busi-nesses, churches, civic groups and individuals are very gener-ous with donations of money, materials and skilled laborers.

Berkshire Bank Donates to PAVEProject Against Violent Encounters (PAVE) in Bennington, Vermont

received a generous donation from the Berkshire Bank in Manchester, Vermont and the Greater Berkshire Foundation. The $1,000 gift is designated to support PAVE’s emergency rental assistance program. Although PAVE is most often associated with their 24-hour crisis hotline services to victims of domestic violence, the amount of funds expended by PAVE to help women and children to obtain both short-term emergency and transitional housing is considerable. PAVE is truly honored to be awarded this gift and to be recognized as doing an “out-standing job” in the community to help people in need.

Stevens Joins Bennington Health & Rehab

Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bennington, Vermont has announced that Heather Stevens will join its staff as its new preschool teacher. Stevens provides a wonderful learning envi-ronment for the children by instructing them in a basic educational program. She also focuses on the children’s daily needs, encourages their creativity and their interactions with others while providing a safe and caring environment in which the children can learn and grow.

Stevens has operated a childcare program from her home for sev-eral years and is in the process of obtaining her certification for Child Development Association (CDA). She and her husband, Dan, reside in Eagle Bridge, New York with their five children, ages 6 to 15.

Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center is a member of Revera Health Systems which owns and operates 30 skilled nursing centers located throughout the United States. These centers provide long and short-term rehabilitation services and offer both inpatient and outpa-tient physical therapy, including respiratory in specialty locations.

Hoosick Falls, New York Kiwanis Club member Anita Sacilowski and president Jim Miner were joined by other Kiwanis mem-bers at the Grand Union in Hoosick Falls to collect for the Albany (New York) Medical Pediatric Trauma Unit. The Grand Union graciously allowed the Kiwanis Club to set up inside away from the cold weather. The Kiwanis Clubs of the Van Rensselaer, Capital and Mohawk divisions built this trauma unit. Any local child under 21 with any trauma from accident or illness is cared for in this particular unit. All of the money raised went directly to this unit.

MSS Takes on Challenge 20/20

Manchester, Vermont’s Maple Street School seventh grade was cho-sen to participate in the National Association of Independent Schools’ (NAIS) global initiative called Challenge 20/20. Challenge 20/20 is an Internet-based program that pairs classes from schools in the U.S. with their counterpart classes in schools in other countries; together the teams (of two or three schools) tackle real global problems to find solutions that can be implemented at the local level and in their own communities.

The NAIS receives over 500 applications from schools from 52 countries and many states in the U.S. Maple Street School has been paired with Pampers Private School Lekki of Lagos, Nigeria. Through a shared web site and web cameras, both seventh grades in Nigeria and Manchester will partner to present possible solutions to deforestation. The program provides opportunities to develop a solid foundation for meaningful problem solving and cross-continent relationships that lead to a more promising global future for students and schools.

Maple Street School is an independent, day school serving children in grades kindergarten through eighth grade.

Susan Biggs of Dorset, Vermont has joined the full-time staff at Southern Vermont College (SVC) as director of communications.

Biggs has worked in the communica-tions field for over 25 years in the education, non-profit and business sectors. Most recently, she served as director of corporate communications at Applejack Art Partners. She has also worked as director of programming for Hildene, the Lincoln Family Home, as communications associate at the Vermont Community Foundation and as director of public relations for the Maple Street School in Manchester, Vermont. Prior to relocating to Vermont, Biggs was writer/pro-ducer for Sports Illustrated mag-azine in New York City.

“SVC is a dynam-ic school offering strong educational programs in careers that are thriving in today’s job market,” Biggs said. “And it’s on the prettiest tract of land I’ve seen in Southern Vermont.

There are great things happen-ing here, and I’m excited to be part of the energy in getting the word out.”

Bennington Rotarians Ted Bird and Millie Pierce ring outside of the JC Penney store in Bennington Plaza in Bennington, Vermont for the Share the Heat Program. Moneys collected all go to the BROC Emergency Food/Fuel Fund, and Central Vermont Public Service Corp. matches every dollar collected. All money collected in Bennington and the CVPS matching funds stay in Bennington to help people heat their homes. The Bennington Rotary Club has been doing this every weekend from Thanksgiving to Christmas for over 15 years. This year, Rotarians will ring through Wednesday, Dec. 24.

Biggs Appointed Director of Communications at SVC

Jennifer Noyes, daughter of Michael and Cynthia Noyes of Williamstown, Massachusetts, is spending the spring 2009 semes-ter studying in Seville, Spain through a program run by Saint Michael’s College. Noyes is going to be a student at Pablo de Olavide University. She is a junior Spanish major at Saint Michael’s, a liberal arts, residential, Catholic college located in the Burlington area of Vermont. Noyes graduated from Mount Greylock Regional High School in Williamstown.

Saint Michael’s College, found-ed in 1904 by the Society of St. Edmund and headed by President John J. Neuhauser, is identified by the Princeton Review as one of the nation’s Best 368 Colleges. As one of only 270 institutions nationwide with a prestigious Phi Beta Kappa chapter on campus, Saint Michael’s has 2,000 full-

time undergraduate students, 500 graduate students and 200 international students.

Matteson Achieves First-Ever Track Sweep

In a Match Race at the Burlington (Vermont) High School Track on November 28, Bob “Geezer Gazelle” Matteson, 92, of Bennington, Vermont ran the 100-Meter in 20.05 seconds (three timers average) for a new single age-92 World Record, more than six-tenths faster than Jing-chan Wang’s long-standing 20.67 (Taiwan, 1987). With this run, Matteson achieved his goal of holding simultaneously, for the first time ever, a one-person World Records sweep of six sequential track events — 100, 200, 400, 800, Mile and Two-Mile.

It took Matteson five tries this past summer and fall, while getting records in longer races, to reach the new 100-M record. He was always close, three times only 3/100 of a second slow. The next-to-last try was a Match Race in early November at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, arranged by Peter Farwell, Williams Cross-Country and Distance Track Coach, Matteson’s long-time friend and mentor.

The final successful attempt was arranged by William Nedde, a for-mer UVM Track Coach who has taken a friendly, helpful interest in Matteson’s track doings. The event was a Match Race against Hamilton Davis, a talented sprinter in his early 80s.

After reaching his goal, Matteson said he is now inclined to take a “breather” from track competition, a considerable effort for two decades. His accomplishments have been recognized in various ways, including selection by USA Track and Field as 60-Plus Master Athlete of the Year for both 2007 and 2008.

Matteson attributes his success to good genes, a healthy home life and never-say-die determination. He has benefited greatly from many years of coaching from Farwell and recently from Nedde, Kathleen Newton and Barbara Jordan. ‘I Love Woodford’ Snowshoe RaceIn Woodford, Vermont, snow comes earlier and stays later than

almost anywhere else in the state. The Batten Kill Runners Club has staged snowshoe races in Woodford when there was bare ground in nearby towns like Wilmington and Bennington, Vermont. The annual “I Love Woodford” snowshoe race will be this Sunday, December 28. The race takes place at 10:30 a.m. on the three-mile nature trail that goes around Adams Reservoir in Woodford State Park on Route 9 in Woodford, 10 miles east of Bennington.

“Woodford” is the first of an 18-race snowshoe series this winter, sponsored by Dion Snowshoes of Readsboro, Vermont. Entry forms, the race series calendar and sign-up for free loaner racing snowshoes to fit running shoes are all at Dionsnowshoes.com.

The race has been dubbed “the run for the dough” because The Vermont Bread Company gives each of the first 100 runners a loaf of bread as he/she crosses the finish line. Smart runners don’t stop there. Black bean soup, coffee, Mrs. Murphy’s Donuts and fresh bagels from The Manchester Vermont Bagel Works are waiting back in the parking lot, as are friendly WMAC snowshoe runners who will talk about the upcoming winter snowshoe series.

Adoptable Pet

Bella is a beautiful 4-year-old brindle female pit bull. She came to Second Chance Animal Center because she was too strong for her previous owner. A quiet home with older children is recommended for Bella. Loving and playful, she can be a little shy and nervous when she first meets new people. She warms up quickly with quality time. An obedience class for socialization with people and other dogs is strongly recommended. She is an active and muscle-bound dog, requiring a good deal of time set aside for exercising. Ian Creitz Photography ExhibitAn exhibit of digital photographs by Ian Creitz is on display at

the Unitarian Universalist (UU) Fellowship of Bennington, Vermont through January. While a few images are full color, most are black and white, emphasizing value shifts and a careful balance between negative and positive space.

Living in Cambridge, New York, Creitz is 25 and distributes maga-zines to help put food on the table. But his passion is taking digital shots of an array of images and nudging them further with Photoshop and other software. At least one of several cameras is with him at all times.

The UU Fellowship of Bennington is located at 108 School St. in Bennington. It is open to the public during Sunday services at 10 a.m.
