A Message from Our
Exalted Ruler David DeCono
February 2016
Welcome to the Winter Wonder Land of Wisconsin. Holidays are over,
New Year’s resolutions are set and we have to wait till February for the
next holiday. You don’t have to wait. Come on down to the lodge and
enjoy the holiday cheer every day. The cold just started and I’m so ready for spring like everyone
else. It was another great month at the Watertown Elks Lodge with all kinds of activities.
At the Central District Meeting last Saturday morning in Oshkosh our Watertown Elks Lodge was
presented an award for being the “Central District Lodge of the Year”. It was an honor being
able to accept that award on behalf of Watertown Elks Lodge 666. Thank you to everyone who
helps makes our lodge a special place. There is a nice plaque down in the office that we need to
find a spot to display it. Other lodges like what we are doing and I hope we keep moving for-
ward in the future. Thanks again for all your help.
We just completed another Sheephead tournament on the 16th and backed it up with the first of, I
hope, many more “Open Jam’s” at the lodge. They will be on the third Sunday of the months. It
is musicians that just want to play music together. Come on out. You won’t be disappointed.
Our new plastic rectangular 8’ tables have arrived at the lodge. This means we have approximate-
ly 20 wood tables to sell and/or donate. We are asking $25.00 per table. I will be in charge of the
table distribution so if interested please contact me @ 920-248-9504. These will be on a first come
first serve basis.
We have a couple things in January to enjoy, like our Initiation of new Members on the 27th and
the Fish and Chicken dinner coming up on the 26th. I hope to see all your friendly faces down
there supporting our lodge.
In February there are going to be an interesting couple of lodge meetings. The first lodge meeting
of the month is on February 10th
is the meeting the PER’s run and is our nominations for next
year’s officer. The Second lodge meeting of the month on February 24th and we have the elec-
tions. We live in a democratic society and this is a time your vote does count.
This is going to interesting because we have two individuals running for Exalted Ruler’s position, two for the Lecturing Knight’s, and two for the Secretary’s. I have spoken to eve-
ryone and all intend to run. They are Gregg Breese and Mike Meyer for ER, Tom Hahn and Den-
nis Daily for Secretary and Pat McCarthy and Kelly Jeske for Lecturing Knight. I hope everyone
comes out to support our lodge and vote. Please contact them directly to get their perspective.

What can we offer to you, as a member, to get you to WANT to come to the Lodge?
We started our meeting this month and I forgot to check the suggestion box. I apologize for not get-
ting those recorded in this month’s article. We will look at them at next month’s board meeting.
Thanks and keep them coming.
The following wasn’t in the newsletters that got mailed out. It was only in the Newsletter for our
electronic recipients. It was missed on what I sent in to be published, which was just an honest mis-
take.
I want everyone to get a chance to read this:
At our December 9th Lodge Meeting, I read a statement under the “Good of the Order” that I
want to share with everyone. I feel I need to make sure everyone has a chance to see this so there
is no confusion or miss-communications on what actually was said.
“I just need a few moments of everyone’s time. I really need to throw this out there and get it off
my chest. I took this position as ER thinking I’d be involved with a group of like-thinking men (and
Women) who come together for the good of the Elks Lodge which in turn works to support our
Veterans, and to improve our community. What I have found to my frustration a never-ending
supply of immaturity, hostility, and well, sneakiness. I will not name specific people, as those peo-
ple are well aware of their own actions. For those of you who come here to support what Elk-
Dom stands for, I thank you, appreciate you from the bottom of my heart, and am proud to stand
with and work with you. I must, at this point make it clear, I will not take sides in the pettiness
that has been taking place here. I will work with any group of people on any project that needs to
be done. I will no longer be sucked into these juvenile games that have been going on here. I have
observed both party’s pulling little snitches to “get even” or “fix” “get rid” of the other party’s.
Enough is enough. No one person is at fault. The results of this snowball effect of actions lie on
the shoulders of anyone who has done the action or said the words. Grown men need to own
their business. If you feel any part of this might be directed at you, then you apparently have
something you feel a little guilty about. So if the boot fits, lace it up and wear it. Everyone here is
a grown person with their own mind and thoughts. I’m not a babysitter. I feel comfortable with
many of the changes in this lodge as being legal and moving in the right direction. A number of the
memberships within the lodge have said they are happy with how things are going. I’ve had a few
ex-members tell me why they left. The choices I make, I make for the good of the Watertown Elks
Lodge.”
The” Adopt a Flag Campaign” is moving along with a lot of participation in the program. The first of
many flags donated by David DeCono is still flying above the lodge. There is an article attached to this
newsletter. Please call me personally with any questions on how to get involved. You donate the
sponsorship fee and we acknowledge you for the time your flag is flying.

Board Of Directors Info
The 100 Year Committee will meet the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm. An article of
events and lodge history will be put in the newspaper and on the lodge Facebook page.
The Upstairs Bar Renovation committee will meet February 18th at 7pm.
Our lodge received a $360.00 Earl Severite grant.
Older wooden table will be sole on a first come first serve basis at $25/table. These tables were
$150 each when they were brand new.
There is a proposal that non-members pat $5/night to play sheepshead. This will help cover the
cost of having the lodge open. This proposal will be addressed after April 1st, 2016.
The upstairs Smoke Eater will be taken down and posted on Ebay and Craigslist for sale.
A motion to purchase an Automatic External Defibulator (AED) will be brought to the lodge
floor at the next meeting.
The Communication committee presented their suggestions. The ER will put together the sug-
gestions and present them at the next lodge meeting.
Waiting on reports for: Christmas Dinner, Memorial Event, TV/Internet, Fireplace room dona-
tion plaque, insurance for lodge rental events
A motion was made and passed that the bill for the storage of the hospice equipment be paid in
full.
Tom G. reported that our boiler needs a high switch. This is required by our insurance.
Question—how much would it cost to have the fireplace cleaned so it could be used?
There is a need to review our hospice expenses and put a plan together as to how we are going
to fund this project.
We have taken in $925 from members thus far to help cover the costs of the Super bowl raffle.
Dennis D. and David D. will call the 12 delinquent members.
We can’t get any new members unless we make our community more aware of the Elks and what
we do.
Bring a guest to the Lodge and Help Spread the Word.
We have been renting the lodge out for more events which means we need more volunteers.
Don’t forget to call me @ 920-248-9504 with any issues and/or questions.
Don’t be afraid to call.
David
If you have an opinion about an item, event or topic you should attend a meeting

DID YOU KNOW?
The weekend of January 16-17 our lodge experienced a very busy weekend. Starting Saturday
morning our Lodge was recognized as the Lodge of the year at the central district meeting in Osh-
kosh. This was unexpected and at the same time a great reflection of how strong our leader is.
Congratulations Dave DeCono on leading the lodge to the top of the hill!
Shortly after receiving that award, a sheepshead tournament started in the Grand Ballroom. That’s
not all though. It continued through to Sunday afternoon when we saw the first Sunday Blues Jam
at the lodge. While we have experienced many busy weekends at our lodge, this one was more
unique than others.
The Jam session produced some wonderful music and memories. The idea for this has been tossed
around for quite some time without gaining traction. When Wayne Arborgast, Brian Gatzke, and
Don Hale decided this was going to happen, we saw it get done.
Two new members working with a seasoned veteran teamed up to have live music, dancing, social-
izing, and a darn good time. There were many people involved with this event. Wayne Arobor-
gast worked to assure there would be musicians while Bryan Gatzke volunteered to bring down the
electronics needed for live music. Don Hale helped both of them get the music going...and sound-
ing great. Many others helped out to make this a fun Sunday. I cannot wait for the second jam ses-
sion the third Sunday in February (21st).
The actions of that weekend remind me of the Leading Knights words given to new members during
initiation. Having the privilege to say these words in my current role they strike me as on point and
important.
“Elks, we teach not alone the charity of alms, but the higher and nobler charity of thought, word
and deed. Our whole influence in life is determined by the good deeds we do rather than by the
emotions we feel. The kindliest feeling may vanish, the best resolve may be forgotten; but the influ-
ence of a good deed, honestly and promptly performed, will continue forever.”
Imagine this, people just started something new and fun for everyone. In the spirit of Elkdom, they
let their thought, word, and deed speak volumes to everyone playing a part. Thanks to all for re-
minding me of the value and truth in our rituals. Refreshing these principles can never hurt and al-
ways inspire the best in Elks.
Fraternally Yours,
Leading Knight
Gregg Breese

Hello, my name is Mark Dutcher. I am run-
ning for the position of Leading Knight of our
Watertown Lodge. I have been a member of
our lodge for 4 years. The reason I am run-
ning for Leading Knight is because I would
like to see the continuous growth of our
lodge and help out in anyway I can with all
of the GREAT events our lodge has to of-
fer. I am honored to serve as Chair on a few
committees: our Christmas Dance, DARE pro-
gram, Super Bowl event, Central District
Bean Bag Tournament, the current Bean Bag
League and our upstairs bar renovation. It is
very important to me that when decisions are
made that they are made to benefit our
lodge and community, nothing else. I hope I
have your support in helping make our lodge
the best it can be.

Lodge of Sorrows
M embers ~ Are you aware of the Lodge of Sor-
rows?
It is a meaningful ritual performed by Officers and
Lodge Members as a tribute in remembrance of your
loved one.
For many reasons, it is not an automatic ritual that mem-
bers perform for a departed member. When an Elk pass-
es, a member of his or her family needs to request the
Lodge of Sorrow through the Lodge office or through an
officer.
When planning your loved one’s funeral, you may want
to consider including the Lodge of Sorrows. This may
well be an important ritual that he/she would have want-
ed. Lodge Office # 920-261-5473
“At this time we should pause in thoughtful review of the prin-
cipals we uphold. The faith we follow teaches us to live in
bonds of Charity with all mankind. To do justice to one anoth-
er raises the standard of human excellence everywhere. Broth-
erly Love is a torch that sheds light over the whole pathway of
life. Fidelity inspires us to be true to one another, and to treas-
ure the memory of the departed.”
Sickness & Distress
Please call ER Dave DeCono, Chaplain Kelly
Jeske or the Lodge Office when you or one of
our Elk members goes into the hospital, nurs-
ing home, respite care, or is recuperating from
an illness or injury. We would like to send a
card and make every effort to visit or help in
some way to ensure they are not forgotten.

A Message from Our Secretary, Tom Hahn:
“Year after year you never fail to bring joy to someone who has no family ties.”
Many of you know that, over the past year, situations have occurred at the Lodge that bother me
a lot and led me to conclude that I did not want to be active in management of the Lodge any
longer. My decision bothered me because I had made a five year commitment to serve as Secre-
tary—it takes a long time to learn and do the job even reasonably well. But, so far, nothing has
changed so I am going to stand by my decision.
Then the Lodge received a thank you card from a Christmas dinner recipient that included the
statement that we “…bring joy to someone who has no family ties”. How do I walk away from
an organization that does the good that we do? I don’t, so I will seek another elected Lodge posi-
tion for which I have some expertise.
The benefit to the Lodge from the situation described above is that we will get some backup in an
area where we have very little now. You all know what happened to the Packers when Jordy
Nelson went down with a knee injury and no one stepped up to replace him! Well, I am no
Jordy Nelson, but I will be able to provide Secretary backup and perform another mandatory
function if I am elected.
Speaking of elections, we will accept nominations for all our elected positions at our first regular
February membership meeting on Wednesday the 10th. We will hold elections of officers at our
second membership meeting on Wednesday the 24th.
Please join us at those meetings, and give thought to how you can help our Lodge continue to “…
bring joy to someone who has no family ties” or who is ill or who is a veteran or who is a youth.
We do good!

QUESTION:
What happens if we do not have
enough volunteer bar tenders for an
event?
Do we hire the number of bartenders
needed? What is the cost?
If we are going to continue to in-
crease the number of events that are
held of our lodge we will need to in-
crease the number of volunteer bar-
tenders we have or look into another
option.
Share your thoughts with our officers

THANKS!! ! THANKS!!! THANKS !!!
AS 2016 emerges, it is a good time to look back over the seasonal decorations that adorned our
lodge during the holiday season in 2015 creating a spectacular holiday environment. This year
the magnificent ballroom remained decorated for a longer time so a later holiday party could be
celebrated with vigor. Terry Breeze, Cindy Peters and Tina Dutcher shared their many talents
when creating the ballroom and upper bar.
The Main Bar and Dining Room were decorated used the talents of Irmgard Krueger, Diane
LaPoint, Paul and Nancy Stadler, Diane Fontaine, Deb Hayes, Darelyn Skladanek and Dick and
Nancy DeCono. Before the final touches were completed, a mystery person came forward and
decorated the elevator tree. This year two smaller trees in the dining room featured Skip Prahl’s
crochet angels and paper stars commemorating Skip and all the ladies who have served the lodge
so faithfully through the years. We are grateful for that same faithful decorating crew, that then
returned in January, and got everything all packed, cleaned up and ready for ready for Valen-
tine’s Day. THANKS!! THANKS!! THANKS!!
