Risk of traveling to Tanzania• Tanzania is a largely stable and peaceful country with generally strong diplomatic ties to its

neighbours and to regional organisations. There is an ongoing border dispute with Malawi but this is not expected to lead to conflict. Economic growth rates are expected to remain at around seven per cent through to 2016, bolstered by large infrastructure investments and significant offshore hydrocarbon finds. Unfortunately, poverty remains endemic for most of the population with many people relying on basic agriculture to survive. Politically, the ruling CCM party is dominant although support for opposition movements is increasing and parties like Chadema may present a significant challenge for CCM in future elections. While the threat of Islamic terrorism is a concern across East Africa, there have been no major attacks in Tanzania since 1998. Domestic sources of political and social discontent could, however, drive increased levels of militancy and unrest over the coming years. Tensions are higher on Zanzibar, with underlying sectarian tension and growing levels of nationalism.

• Germany is a politically stable country. The current governing coalition led by Angela Merkel includes a pro-business party, likely to favour improving the country's economic profile. Although Germany will continue to suffer from the economic crisis in the short term, a slow recovery is expected in the medium term. Germany is at a general threat from terrorism as it continues to engage in international missions, especially in Afghanistan. The sources of this threat are various, and although the most pertinent threat is from Islamic cells; home-grown radical groups are also a concern. There are also multiple causes that could aggravate the internal security environment, such as social and racial tension, as well as immigration and unemployment. Nevertheless, the risk of civil unrest is low as Germany is an example of a democratic country with a developed civil society, strong rule of law and effective security forces.

• Germany has good medical care and facilities. If you are not a resident of Germany, doctors and hospitals may expect immediate payment in cash. Most doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies do not accept credit cards.

• Due to Germany’s strict customs regulations, generally you are not allowed to receive prescription medication by mail without special permission. During your trip, you should only carry the amount you plan to use. For more information, please visit the German Customs website regarding medicine.

Romania is one of the poorest states in the EU. Investment and development are also still hampered by endemic corruption, bureaucratic red tape and organised crime. The government will struggle to balance its budget while keeping inflation under control should the currency continue to depreciate, food and energy prices rise and agricultural production remain below demand due to unfavourable climate conditions.

Romania and Ukraine have a minor dispute over the demarcation of the Black Sea border; however, the country is not expected to engage in an open conflict with its neighbours, despite accusations of meddling in Moldovan domestic politics.

•There are likely to be large scale political demonstrations for and against the government in Budapest and elsewhere in the country on 15 March (the anniversary of the 1848 revolution). In the past these kinds of demonstrations have been generally peaceful but there has been some localised violence. You should avoid all political demonstrations.•The following locations in Budapest are likely to feature in these demonstrations: Széchényi Tér (former Roosevelt Tér), Kossuth Tér (Parliament), Múzeum Körút (Hungarian National Museum) and Dísz Tér (Castle district).•There is a low threat from terrorism. See Terrorism

EU accession in 2004 catalysed economic growth in Poland, benefiting from access to tariff-free European markets. Poland has relished the opportunity to work closely with a number of Euro-Atlantic organisations, a trend which has notably aggravated already strained relations with Russia, although the likelihood of this situation escalating beyond a war of words remains unlikely. Political stability has been boosted by the fact that both the president and prime minister are representatives of the Civic Platform party, which should speed up political and fiscal reforms. Poland will continue to sell bonds and privatise state industries to raise cash, but growth remains constrained by weak consumer spending and underperforming tax revenues.
