Trinity United Methodist Church 75 East High Street, Mount Gilead, Ohio 43338
Now that Easter is over, let’s not forget the Cross and the great price that Jesus paid to give us eternal life. The hymn says, “At the Cross, at the
Cross, where I first saw the light, and the burden of my heart rolled away. It was there by faith I received my sight, and now I am happy all the day!” How dark the world would be without Jesus death and resurrection. At the Cross we find peace with God, grace, mercy and forgiveness. The resurrection demonstrates Jesus’ victory over death and sin by showing us that death could not hold Him.
When we refer to the Cross, of course, we are referring to the wooden implement upon which Jesus died. That “cross” then is a symbol of Jesus death for our sins. In Jesus death on a wooden
cross both God’s justice and mercy met. Justice and mercy kissed at the Cross. God is holy and just and therefore all sin must be punished. We don’t like that word punishment. The truth is, because of God’s love for us, He punished His own Son on the Cross in our place. In this act of Jesus’ sacrifice and God’s justice or wrath for our sins taken out on His own Son, God’s mercy was now free to invade our hearts. God’s grace was free to transform our lives. At the Cross we receive mercy. Thank God for the Cross and we don’t have to get what our sins deserve!
Now that Easter is over, again, let us not forget the wonderful gift of God’s love manifest on the Cross, the
resurrection proving that our sins were truly paid for. And so, let’s share the mercy of the Cross with others who need to know Jesus as personal savior. Show forth the power of the Cross and Resurrection. Live a changed life! Share God’s love with others!
Thanking God for Spring and new life,
Pastor Jeff
Heritage Sunday – On Sunday, 5/19 we will be honoring in both worship services, those in our congregation who have been members of our church for 50 years. We will honor: Marty Barnett, Tom Cotton, Charlotte
Loren, Mary Kay Myers, and Joan Myers.
The price of freedom
In “What Did He Die For?” Twila Paris reminds us why we observe Memorial Day — and why we worship Jesus as our Savior. The first verse tells of a 21-year-old soldier fighting for America’s freedom during World War II. The second verse recalls another young man, many centuries prior, sent by his Father to win eternal freedom from sin for the entire world.
The chorus offers this challenge: “What did he die for when he died for you and me, Made the sacrifice so that we could all be free? I believe we will answer each to heaven For the way we spend a priceless liberty. Look inside and ask the question, What did he die for?”
Memorial Day challenges us to live so as to honor the sacrifices made by members of the military. We value our freedom because of the heavy price people have paid for it. Likewise, every day we’re challenged to live so as to honor Jesus’ supreme sacrifice. He calls us to spend our “priceless liberty” using our blessings to bless others.

TUESDAY BIBLE STUDY AT SAMES & COOK 3:00-4:00 pm
The Sames and Cook Bible Study will be reading the book by
Liz Curtis Higgs – The Bad Girls of the Bible. The author offers a clear-sighted, life-changing approach to understanding those “other women” in Scripture such as Delilah, Jezebel, Rahab, Lot’s wife and others. Liz combines a contemporary retelling of their stories with a solid, verse-by-verse study of their lives and the lessons we can learn from them.
Whether they were Bad to the Bone, Bad for a Moment, or Bad for a Season but Not Forever, these infamous sisters show us how not to handle the challenges of life.

We have a tour of the Historical Society scheduled for Monday, May 13th at 7:00 p.m. We will meet at the church parking lot at 6:45 and car pool to the square. After the tour we will return to the church for a short business meeting and snack. We need to do some planning for our June Salad Luncheon.
Please join us if you can. Marilyn Turner
Joys of motherhood
• A hug for no reason. • Belly laughs. • The light-bulb moment when your child understands something you’ve been trying to teach
them. • Smiles and giggles. • Mud pies. • Arms raised in the air after a big accomplishment. • Hearing Scripture and prayer from your child’s lips. • Quiet moments on the couch. • Reading aloud together. • A family meal filled with conversation and laughter. • Watching your child be kind to another. • Recognizing a moment you’d like to freeze in time. • A child’s look of surprise and joy. • A quiet conversation that heals a wounded heart. • The words “I love you” — and a sticky kiss.

Surprise! “Each day holds a surprise,” wrote Henri Nouwen. “But only if we expect it can we see, hear, or feel it when it
comes to us. Let’s not be afraid to receive each day’s surprise, whether it comes to us as sorrow or as joy.”
Wait — sorrow as a surprise? And I’m not to fear it? Aren’t surprises supposed to be happy things? What does Nouwen mean?
He continues: “It will open a new place in our hearts, a place where we can welcome new friends and celebrate more fully our shared humanity.” And I remember, too, the psalmist’s words: “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted” (Psalm 34:18). Maybe that’s the surprise in our sorrow: that when we ache, as when we celebrate, God is there — in new friends, in shared humanity. Surprise!
