Confession of SinsAlmighty and Most Merciful Father, we come before You, acknowledging our sins, our shortcomings, and our breaking of our Covenant with You.

Not only have we done things we ought not to have done, said things we ought not to have said, left undone so many things we ought to have done and been silent when we should have witnessed for You.

Not only are we guilty of that, O Lord; but we have also closed our eyes and pretended not to see the injustices, the racism and the evil which pervade our everyday lives.

We have shut our ears and pretended not to hear the cries for liberation which come from the lips, lives and hearts of the oppressed – even our own Black brothers and sisters!

Forgive us, O Lord, renew our courage and faith, and keep us ever mindful of Thy great sacrifice. Hear us, we beseech Thee, as we come to You in love and worship giving Your Name the praise forevermore.

******To All Our Visitors ... To all who mourn and need comforting ... To all who are friendless and want friendship ... To all who are oppressed and need liberation; and to whosoever will come, Trinity opens its doors. Thank you for coming, and may God bless you.

Stewardship Tithing LitanyMinister: Tithing is the biblical principle of returning 10% to God first.

Congregation: The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.

Minister: Debt is a spiritual issue. We are robbing God’s people when we live beyond our means, refuse to budget, invest, save, and tithe; we are seduced by debt.

Congregation: The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is Mine and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers.

Minister: Tithing, budgeting, and stewardship are the solutions to the spiritual problem of debt.

Congregation: Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.

Minister: Debt is fed by the desire for immediate gratification, poor planning, and the need to keep up appearances.

Congregation: His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

Minister: Tithing, saving, budgeting, and good stewardship of resources is the calling of all Christians.

Congregation: Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

Minister: Debt slavery has been used since 1863 to prevent people of African descent from gaining power and independence.

Congregation: Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Minister: Our ancestors were forced into slavery. Today, we volunteer to be enslaved by debt and we mortgage our children’s future.

Together: O God, we have been called to be a debt-free congregation. We are called to teach our community, children, and grandchildren the discipline of tithing, the power of budgeting, the blessing of saving, and the benefit of investing. We desire to live debt-free because it honors God and our ancestors, who died not for debt, but that we may live free with our God. Amen.

GETTING TO THE HEART OF THINGS“WHOLE HEARTEDLY”

In the midst of Lent, the fifth Sunday is kind of an “already, not yet” time. We have moved with the season and tried to respond to its calling. However, we have not yet reached the activity of Holy Week, with the great joy and great sorrow which that week brings. Do we dare to pause and take a breather at this point and see where we are? Actually, such action on our part is almost an imperative.

Athletes, who run a marathon, need to approach the actual race with a considerable amount of thought and care. Over a period of time, they have run and run and run some more, toning and strengthening their muscles. There is also a need, though, for strengthening the inner person, building up the fortitude that it takes to cover the twenty-six plus miles of a marathon. They need to keep nurtured with healthy food and absorb helpful instructions from a coach or other experienced runners.

Take time to take stock. What does it require of us to run the race of life successfully? It is foolish to worry about other runners, who may have greater athletic prowess. We need to find out how to do our own personal best. What have we learned during the opening weeks of Lent? What have we overcome, that might limit our speed or balance or stamina? What sources of strength and renewal have we found? There is still time to work on these.

The spiritual strength we need during Lent comes from within and also from outside. God is with us, with both words of challenge and words of assurance. The race truly is worth running. We are skilled and experienced, qualified to run. We need now to catch more of God’s strengthening spirit, so we can run successfully.

The future lies before us, with some good things and some hard things. God runs with us. Can we now toe the mark at the starting line and run with a whole heart?

Fasting for the Lenten SeasonThis year, our church-wide theme – Loving God. Living Green. Liberating All. – calls us to a closer relationship with God, and to the stewardship of God’s creation, as a path to liberation. During this Lenten season, we are called to a church-wide fast. Fasting is a spiritual discipline designed to deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ. We do not fast to lose weight; we fast to be empowered by Jesus Christ. In 2014, God will reveal God’s purpose and plan in your life if you dare fast, pray, study and learn the power of quiet time. Jesus had to steal away from the crowd and spend time with his Father in the mountains, to pray, study, reflect, meditate and center his spirit. If fasting and prayer were the disciplines of Jesus, should not this be followed by us? Join with us this season and witness a breakthrough as we fast, pray, study, reflect, meditate and learn the power of quiet time.

Question: I have never fasted before?Answer: Consult your doctor first!* Fasting is not the removal of all food from your diet. Fasting is learning to discipline your mind, body and spirit to remove “something” you know hinders your ability to function at your highest capacity, from your life or diet.Question: Is fasting biblical?Answer: Fasting is biblical. Throughout the Old and New Testaments, fasting was used by the people of God to prepare for a spiritual challenge, hear God’s voice before making a major decision, and for removing destructive forces in your life.

Fast #1 - Fasting to confront destructive forces • March 5 – March 11

Eat all your meals before 6:00 p.m. • March 12 – March 18

Eat only two meals before 6:00 p.m. • March 19 – March 25 - Eat only one meal a

day before 6:00 p.m.• March 26 – April 1

Drink only juices, water and/or tea

• April 2 – April 8Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m.

• April 9 – April 20Slowly begin to add meat to your diet

Fast #2 – The Daniel Fast (Taken from the book of Daniel). When Daniel was captured by the Babylonians, he asked of the Babylonians if he, along with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, could fast eating only fruits and vegetables so they would be prepared to confront the Babylonian king.

• March 5 – March 11 Eat all meals before 6:00 p.m.

• March 12 –March 18Eat only two meals a day before 6:00 p.m.

• March 19 – March 25Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m.

• March 26 – April 1Eat one meal a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added.

• April 2 – April 8Eat two meals a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added

• April 9 – April 20Eat three meals a day before 6:00 p.m.

Fast #3 - Removing certain foods or items from your diet or life. One type of fasting is to remove certain foods from your diet, such as fried foods, sweets, sodas or refined sugar and/or flour. *Please seek the advice of your primary care provider/doctor before beginning a fast that involves restricting food/calories and/or medication. Your doctor can help you design a fasting plan that protects your health and well-being. This is extremely important if you are pregnant or have a medical condition. Medical condition examples include, but are not limited to those who have a chronic disease such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, recent surgery, etc.

Hallelujah!

This week we surpassed an important milestone as we moved past the thousand pledge mark, and as of April 2nd, 1,088 members/families have made pledges to our Raise the Roof campaign. Those pledges now total $4,315,629.

At this time, just about half of our members that Opted-In to the Raise the Roof Campaign have actually pledged to the campaign. Of those 1,000 or so remaining, if those pledges average just $250 a year, we would exceed our goal.

If you have yet to pledge, please prayerfully consider doing so during this season of Lent. As we celebrate our risen Savior this Easter, what a wonderful blessing to have achieved our pledge goal, and be on our way to fulfilling the vision for our new "Green" roof, as well as other critical infrastructure improvements to our church home.

Stay Informed.

Visit the Raise the Roof web site: www.raisetheroofcampaign.org.

Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.” . . . They replied, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began this good work.

Nehemiah 2:17-18 NIV
