ChorusO how I love Jesus, O how I love Jesus, O how I love Jesus,

Because He first loved me.

Who died to set me free, It tells me of His precious blood,

The sinner’s perfect plea.

That none can bear below.

LUKE 19:28-40 (NIV)28After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30“Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”

32Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. 33As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34They replied, “The Lord needs it.” 35They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.

37When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: 38“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” 40“I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”

Litany for Awareness, Compassion, and to End the Slavery of Sex Trafficking

MINISTER: God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, we gather in this sacred space to give voice to the silent tears and pain of the more 25,000 persons in Chicago and the more than 9.8 million persons globally who have been abducted, enslaved, exploited and forced into the sex trafficking industry in the U.S. and the world. Women and girls often are disproportionately impacted by sex trafficking. These are those whom we often misjudge without knowing the story behind what we see with superficial sight.

ALL: Like the blind man in Matthew 9, we believe that You can give us sight, so we cry out “Son of David, have mercy on us.” Grant us a sight that will allow us to see both spiritual and physical pain of the millions of girls, boys, women, and men who are enslaved by the sex trafficking industry and the children in the U.S. who are at risk of being captives of the sex trafficking industry, an unofficial, but very real form of incarceration.

MINISTER: As a people with a history of enslavement, we know what it means to be held captive and treated as less than precious people made in the image of God. Because of Jesus, we were protected and able to endure and resist until freedom came. Lord, because You do not change or lie, we know that You are with the captives of this modern day slavery.

ALL: Jesus, we are asking that You be a hedge of protection around our daughters, sons, sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers, and neighbors who are the captives of sex trafficking, until freedom comes.

MINISTER: The world of sex and human trafficking is a dangerous space where trickery, drugs, guns, emotional, and physical violence are used as weapons of coercion and control. It generates $32 billion dollars annually in the U.S. and victims are stripped of their God-given dignity. We pray for healing and restoration of those who are victims and those who are the perpetrators.

ALL: Jesus, we are your disciples. We know that You have not given us a spirit of fear, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline. Open our eyes, ears, and hearts, so that we can hear the silent cries of the captives. Grant us the courage to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind; to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord. Lord, do not let our feet stray from the path of restoration, freedom, and justice for both the victims and the perpetrators. Help us keep fighting, until every captive is set free! Ase’.

GETTING TO THE HEART OF THINGS“WHAT DOES FULFILLMENT LOOK LIKE?”

What was Jesus looking for on Palm Sunday? His disciples may have had mixed emotions that day, but probably most of them saw it as the time when Jesus’ power and authority would be recognized and celebrated. We do not know what Jesus planned or wanted, but to be true to his basic nature and mission, he probably hoped that people would finally recognize and accept the truth that he had been teaching. He wanted them to find hope for a new kind of life under God’s loving care and protection.

Jesus had lived out a dream, God’s dream for humankind. He moved out of the realm of partiality into the world of fulfillment. He had a vision of “What if?” and “It can happen!” Think of the kind of life that would be possible, if we all lived in accord with the Beatitudes! What if meekness, mercy, purity of heart and peacemaking became the rule rather than the exception? Could this day of riding into Jerusalem on a lowly donkey be the dawning of such an era? Over the years we have come to realize that this ideal kind of life has not become the norm of human behavior. We, who have chosen to be Jesus’ followers, though, must keep his vision ever before us. It is not fulfilled in many areas of our common life, but it can be achieved – at least partially – in our individual lives. Then, it can spread out to others. Today is a good day to have our own Palm Sunday. Remember that Jesus rode along humbly, not as a conquering hero. We do well to go through the day – and life as a whole – humbly, but with assurance that we are on the right road.

Rejoice in being fully engaged, at work in fulfilling God’s dream for us. If we fulfill Christ’s dream to the best of our ability, we can truly celebrate. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8)

Fasting for the Lenten SeasonThis year, our church-wide theme – Loving God. Living Green. Liberating All. – calls us to a closer relationship with God, and to the stewardship of God’s creation, as a path to liberation. During this Lenten season, we are called to a church-wide fast. Fasting is a spiritual discipline designed to deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ. We do not fast to lose weight; we fast to be empowered by Jesus Christ. In 2014, God will reveal God’s purpose and plan in your life if you dare fast, pray, study and learn the power of quiet time. Jesus had to steal away from the crowd and spend time with his Father in the mountains, to pray, study, reflect, meditate and center his spirit. If fasting and prayer were the disciplines of Jesus, should not this be followed by us? Join with us this season and witness a breakthrough as we fast, pray, study, reflect, meditate and learn the power of quiet time.

Question: I have never fasted before?Answer: Consult your doctor first!* Fasting is not the removal of all food from your diet. Fasting is learning to discipline your mind, body and spirit to remove “something” you know hinders your ability to function at your highest capacity, from your life or diet.Question: Is fasting biblical?Answer: Fasting is biblical. Throughout the Old and New Testaments, fasting was used by the people of God to prepare for a spiritual challenge, hear God’s voice before making a major decision, and for removing destructive forces in your life.

Fast #1 - Fasting to confront destructive forces • March 5 – March 11

Eat all your meals before 6:00 p.m. • March 12 – March 18

Eat only two meals before 6:00 p.m. • March 19 – March 25 - Eat only one meal a

day before 6:00 p.m.• March 26 – April 1

Drink only juices, water and/or tea

• April 2 – April 8Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m.

• April 9 – April 20Slowly begin to add meat to your diet

Fast #2 – The Daniel Fast (Taken from the book of Daniel). When Daniel was captured by the Babylonians, he asked of the Babylonians if he, along with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, could fast eating only fruits and vegetables so they would be prepared to confront the Babylonian king.

• March 5 – March 11 Eat all meals before 6:00 p.m.

• March 12 –March 18Eat only two meals a day before 6:00 p.m.

• March 19 – March 25Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m.

• March 26 – April 1Eat one meal a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added.

• April 2 – April 8Eat two meals a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added

• April 9 – April 20Eat three meals a day before 6:00 p.m.

Fast #3 - Removing certain foods or items from your diet or life. One type of fasting is to remove certain foods from your diet, such as fried foods, sweets, sodas or refined sugar and/or flour. *Please seek the advice of your primary care provider/doctor before beginning a fast that involves restricting food/calories and/or medication. Your doctor can help you design a fasting plan that protects your health and well-being. This is extremely important if you are pregnant or have a medical condition. Medical condition examples include, but are not limited to those who have a chronic disease such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, recent surgery, etc.

Fasting

As of April 8th, 1,125 members/families have made pledges to our Raise the Roof campaign. Those pledges now total $4,407,579.

Currently, over half of our members who opted-in to the Raise the Roof Campaign have actually pledged to the campaign. If you have not yet pledged, please make every effort to do so by Easter Sunday, April 20th. Once our pledge commitments reach our goal, we can begin to solidify our plans for the actual project improvements. Your help is critical.

If you have already pledged, it is important that you now begin to meet your pledge commitments. We’ve asked for pledges over five years; and some have made their pledges due in 3, and even 2 years. Actual projects can be planned, but not started without those actual contributions being received. The good news is that we have already received a good percentage of our pledges.

As we move into the Holy Week observance of the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we thank you for your interest in and commitment to our Raise the Roof Campaign. Together, we will equip Trinity UCC to be everything God has meant it to be, now, and in the future.

Stay informed.

Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.” . . . They replied, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began this good work.
