He LivesVerse 1

I serve a risen Saviour, He’s in the world today; I know that He is living, Whatever men may say;I see His hand of mercy, I hear His voice of cheer,

And just the time I need Him He’s always near.

Chorus

He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me and

He talks with me Along life’s narrow way.

He lives, He lives, Salvation to impart!

You ask me how I know He lives: He lives within my heart.

Verse 2

In all the world around me I see His loving care,

And tho my heart grows wearyI never will despair;

I know that He is leading Thro’ all the stormy blast, The day of His appearing

Will come at last.

JOHN 20:19-21a (NRSV)

19When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you.”

32The two other criminals were taken out with him to be killed. And when they came to a place called "Skull," there they killed him and the criminals, the one on his right and the other on his left. Jesus said, "Father forgive them, for they don't know what they're up to." They rolled dice to see who would get his clothes.

The crowd stood around staring. The leaders thumbed their noses at him. They said, "He saved others; let him save himself, if he is really God's special Leader." The policemen, too, made fun of him. They offered him a drink of whiskey. They said, "Since you are the Head of the Church, save yourself."

39One of the criminals hanging beside him railed at him, "hey, you, ain't you the Leader? Save yourself and us." But the other one rebuked him. He said, "Ain't you got no fear of God, seeing as how you're accused of the same thing he is? And we had it comin' to us, and got just what we deserved for what we done. But him, he ain't broke no law." And we said "Please, Jesus, remember me when you git your Movement goin'." He said to him, "I tell you straight, today you'll be with me in highest Heaven."

44It was already about noon. The sun's light went out and darkness settled over the land until three o'clock. The big curtain in the sanctuary was split in two. And calling out with a loud cry, Jesus said, "O Father, I'm placing my spirit in your hands." He said this and he died. Now the police captain, when he saw how it had happened, praised God and said, "Surely this was a good man!" The whole crowd, who had come along for the sight, when they saw how it all turned out, went home heaving great sobs. And the people who had known him, with the women who had followed him all the way from Alabama, stood off in the distance to see what was going on.

*This is a modern Bible translation (1969) from the book The Cotton Patch Version of Luke and Acts: Jesus' Doings and the Happenings, by Clarence L. Jordan of Americus, Georgia. One of his wishes, in reinterpreting the Bible for his contemporaries, was that, "Possibly the wind of Pentecost will blow through our houses, and its fire enkindle our hearts."

1 CORINTHIANS 15:1-10 (NIV)1Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 3For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve. 6After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.

7Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born. 9For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.

GETTING TO THE HEART OF THINGS“IT ALL COMES TOGETHER”

If you could have been with Jesus at any time during his ministry, what would you choose? A great miracle, like restoring sight to a blind man? Or a tender moment, like his welcoming and blessing little children? For a person who wants to understand what faith and life are all about, perhaps the best time would be after the resurrection, when Jesus was walking with two of his followers on the road to Emmaus. We are told that “beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.” (Luke 24:27)

All of us who have affirmed our own belief and discipleship, know that Jesus’ path and our own paths are not easy ones. We know times of uncertainty, when we wonder which way to turn. Emotions, that include everything from doubt to fear, may make us uncertain as to whether the path we have chosen is the right one. If we could have been in on the conversation along the road to Emmaus, we would have seen how it all fits together. Jesus, in a sense, “wrapped it up” for them.

None of us knows just what Jesus told them, but there are glimpses we can find. Start, as Jesus did, with Moses and the story of creation. God brings order out of chaos and calls it “good”. Moses delivers the Israelites out of oppression in Egypt and opens up a Promised Land before them. Prophets call people to righteous living with words like “What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8) The resurrection gives a benediction to it all. It assures us that nothing can keep God’s presence from being with us forever. It reminds us that there are things in life that are eternal and undying. Though at times we, and ideals we believe in, may seem defeated and lost, with God’s help they rise again. Christ, and we, are risen today. Alleluia!

BIO

Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie serves as the 117th elected and consecrated bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Her historic election represents the first time in the over 213-year history of the A.M.E. Church a woman had obtained the level of Episcopal office. Currently, she is honored to serve as the presiding prelate of the 10th Episcopal District, which includes the great state of Texas.

She previously served as the presiding bishop of the Thirteenth Episcopal District, Tennessee and Kentucky, and the Eighteenth Episcopal District in Southern Africa. In each district she initiated innovative ministry from building three group homes for children orphaned by AIDS in Swaziland to Believe, Inc a faith-based non-profit to help resource local congregations and provide scholarships.

In 2009, Bishop McKenzie was appointed to serve on the Advisory Council of the White House Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships by President Barack Obama. She is Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustee of Paul Quinn College in Dallas, Texas, and is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

Bishop McKenzie is the author of four books. The first two, Not without a Struggle and Strength in the Struggle, concern leadership and professional growth for women. Journey to the Well helps women seek new directions for personal growth and transformation following the footsteps of the Biblical Samaritan woman. Her latest book, Swapping Housewives, tells the stories of Rachel, Jacob and Leah and shares the 21st century implications for married and unmarried love.

Bishop McKenzie, described as an “electrifying preacher”, has been honored for her leadership, community service, and outstanding achievements by a number of diverse civic, educational, business, and governmental leaders.

Bishop McKenzie is humbled and grateful to God for the many opportunities and blessings afforded her as she strives to serve with excellence in the Kingdom of God. Her messages and prayers can be read and heard at www.thisisyourwakeupcallonline.com.

As of April 15, 1,160 members/families have made pledges to our Raise the Roof

campaign. Those pledges now total $4,494,979.

Currently, over half of our membership who opted-in to the Raise the Roof campaign have actually pledged to the campaign. If you have already pledged, it is important that you now begin to meet your pledge commitments. Actual projects can be planned, but not started without actual contributions being received.

We thank you for your interest in and commitment to our Raise the Roof campaign. Together, we will equip Trinity UCC to be everything God has meant us to be, now, and in the future.
