I serve a risen Savior He’s in the world today. I know that He is living, Whatever men may say. I see His hand of mercy; I hear His voice of cheer;

And just the time I need Him He’s always near.

ChoRUSHe lives, He lives,

Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me and talks with me

Along life’s narrow way. He lives, He lives,

Salvation to impart! You ask me how I know He lives?

He lives within my heart.

VeRSe 2In all the world around me

I see His loving care, And though my heart grows weary,

I never will despair; I know that He is leading,

Through all the stormy blast; The day of His appearing

Will come at last.

PSALM 103:2-5 (nRSV)2Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits— 3who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, 4who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, 5who satisfies you with good as long as you live that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Eternal hallelujahs To Jesus Christ the King!

Bishop Vashti Murphy Mckenzie serves as the 117th elected and consecrated bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Her historic election represents the first time in the over 213-year history of the A.M.E. Church a woman had obtained the level of Episcopal office. Currently, she is honored to serve as the presiding prelate of the 10th Episcopal District, which includes the great state of Texas.

She previously served as the presiding bishop of the Thirteenth Episcopal District, Tennessee and Kentucky, and the Eighteenth Episcopal District in Southern Africa. In each district she initiated innovative ministry from building three group homes for children orphaned by AIDS in Swaziland to Believe, Inc a faith-based non-profit to help resource local congregations and provide scholarships.

In 2009, Bishop McKenzie was appointed to serve on the Advisory Council of the White House Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships by President Barack Obama. She is Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustee of Paul Quinn College in Dallas, Texas, and is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

Bishop McKenzie is the author of four books. The first two, Not without a Struggle and Strength in the Struggle, concern leadership and professional growth for women. Journey to the Well helps women seek new directions for personal growth and transformation following the footsteps of the Biblical Samaritan woman. Her latest book, Swapping Housewives, tells the stories of Rachel, Jacob and Leah and shares the 21st century implications for married and unmarried love.

Bishop McKenzie, described as an “electrifying preacher”, has been honored for her leadership, community service, and outstanding achievements by a number of diverse civic, educational, business, and governmental leaders.

Bishop McKenzie is humbled and grateful to God for the many opportunities and blessings afforded her as she strives to serve with excellence in the Kingdom of God. Her messages and prayers can be read and heard at www.thisisyourwakeupcallonline.com.

Registries such as this can make a big difference in someone’s life, maybe even someone you know. Fellow Trinity UCC member, Gwen Williams, just completed her second bout with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), one of the rarest and fast-moving forms of the disease. While Gwen was able to beat this round, she and many patients like her are still in need of bone marrow transplants to give them a stronger chance toward complete remission.

By becoming a donor today, you can potentially make a huge difference in Gwen’s life, and fellow patients like her, in their quest to beat leukemia and other blood cancers.

Join the Be the Match Registry®:

Patients need you! For thousands with blood cancers like leukemia or other diseases like sickle cell anemia, a marrow transplant is their only hope for life. If you have diverse ancestry, patients especially need you because they are most likely to match someone who shares their heritage.

DREAMCATCHERA film by Kim Longinotto

Saturday, April 30, 20162:00 p.m. • Sanctuary

Dreamcatcher takes us into a hidden world through the eyes of one of its survivors, Brenda Myers-Powell, a former teenage prostitute who worked the streets of Chicago who defied the odds to become a powerful advocate for change in her community. After a violent encounter with a ‘john,’ Brenda woke up in the hospital and decided to change her life. Today she is a beacon of hope and a pillar of strength for hundreds of women and girls as young as fourteen who want to change their own lives. ‘Dreamcatcher’ explores the cycle of neglect, violence and exploitation which each year leaves thousands upon thousands of girls and women feeling that prostitution is their only option to survive. With warmth and humor, Brenda gives hope to those who have none. Her story is their inspiration.

Average size of an African American Tutor: Larger than Life!

“They (students) absolutely do way more work just because there is a body in front of them.”—an African-American male tutor

According to federal tests, half of all African American schoolboys have not mastered basic math skills by the time they reach eighth grade. These are skills educators consider essential for their grade level. You should know that the Endeleo Institute is in partnership with six CPS high schools, all of which are in some state of academic probation that we seek to reverse.

Endeleo is currently conducting our ACT Strategies Workshop and after administering initial pre-tests, areas of concern in the four categories (English, math, reading and science) prompted us to reinforce and intensify our tutoring team. In 2012-13, the University of Chicago conducted a highly successful program of intense tutoring, in combination with group

behavioral counseling that we plan to leverage as a model.

If you are remotely interested in having a presence in a young person’s life (for as little as 1 hour per week) and becoming part of our tutoring pool, please, please contact our office (773-966-1583) and ask for our Director of College and Career Readiness, Carole Jacobs. Black Tutors Matter!

2016 Churchwide Theme and Scriptures

Theme: “The Fruit of The Spirit: Taste and See!”

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT)

January – LoveHe answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27 (NRSV)

February – JoyNehemiah said, “Go and enjoy good food and sweet drinks. Send some to people who have none, because today is a holy day to the Lord. Don’t be sad, because the joy of the Lord will make you strong.” Nehemiah 8:10 (NCV)

March – PeaceBlessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9 (NIV)

April – PatienceWait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!

Psalm 27:14 (NKJV)

May – Kindness“This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another. Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other. Zechariah 7:9-10 (NLT)

June – GoodnessWho is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.

James 3:13-14 (NIV)

July – FaithfulnessJesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32 (NLT)

August – GentlenessBy the humility and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul, who am “timid” when face to face with you, but “bold” toward you when away! I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world. For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 2 Corinthians 10:1-3 (NIV)

September – Self ControlSo prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. 1 Peter 1:13-14 (NLT)

October – Forgive One AnotherGet rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:31-32 (NLT)

November – Service One AnotherMy brothers and sisters, God called you to be free, but do not use your freedom as an excuse to do what pleases your sinful self. Serve each other with love. Galatians 5:13 (NCV)

December – Build Up One AnotherSo encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NLT)
