I invite you to be nourished by God, and to nourish others by your witness to the resurrection. May these Fifty Days be a time when you are renewed, and where fed by the scriptures, prayer, and worship you would aspire to bring food to the hungry, comfort to the afflicted, hope to the hopeless, and faith to those who doubt. For in doing so we follow in the footsteps of the apostles, and in the promises we made in the waters of baptism. And, let us make a right beginning now, as we join in the ancient acclamation made by those who live in the wake of the empty tomb: Alleluia, Christ is risen! The Lord is risen indeed, Alleluia!

May 2017May 2017May 2017May 2017 In our tradi%on, Easter is more than a day. By tradi%on, we celebrate Easter as a season.

Indeed, it’s o8en called the “Great 50 Days!” – a reminder both that this season is

longer than the solemn 40 days of Lent and that it is more vitally significant as well.

In church, there are reminders that Easter abides long a8er the flowers lose their

blossom. The Paschal Candle remains lit throughout these days of Easter%de. We repeat

the “alleluias” we lost a8er Shrove Tuesday. We gather on Sundays to hear stories of

new life experienced by Jesus’ first followers in the days that followed.

It’s all a reminder that we celebrate Easter as more than something that happened once

upon a %me in a place far, far away. During these 50 days, we are reminded that Easter

is a reality that keeps happening in the here and now of our world.

Episcopal priest and writer Rick Morley notes that we begin Lent on Ash Wednesday

with an invita%on to observe a holy Lent (see BCP, pp. 264-265). The words used in our

liturgy are powerful, he says, but he wishes we had something comparable for

Easter%de. I doubt it will catch on, but here’s what he suggests for us:

Dear People of God, on the day of resurrection, and on the days immediately following, the disciples saw and experienced the Risen Christ again and again. Jesus spoke to them, called them by name, offered them his peace, fed them, broke bread with them, and sent them out. The first Christians observed the celebrations of the great Fifty Days of Easter with great devotion, and it is when they welcomed new Christians into their fellowship through the waters of baptism. By their words, their actions, and their lives they witnessed to the New life that Jesus brought and still brings. By the power of the resurrection they moved from disciples to apostles, from sin to holiness, from death to life. I invite you therefore, in the name of the Church, to a holy season of Easter.

Meet th e Ves t ry Meet th e Ves t ry Meet th e Ves t ry Meet th e Ves t ry ———— J im A l l eJ im A l l eJ im A l l eJ im A l l e nnnn

Vestry member since 2016

I was born into the Episcopal Church where I was bap%zed, confirmed and served as an Acolyte.

My career was in the entertainment industry and I first visited Bend in 1975 while touring with a small "Truck and Bus"

opera company. I knew that someday I would make this area my home. I finally arrived in 2012 and began my search

for a new church. My 3rd stop was Trinity Episcopal and knew instantly that I had found my second home in Bend.

When I was asked to consider being on the Trinity Vestry, I was very honored to even be asked, let alone asked to

serve. My thirst for the inner workings of our church is one that I hope isn't ever quenched. I also lend a hand with

the video and edi%ng of Trinity events, serve as liaison to the Outreach programs, have shoveled snow, cooked for the

choir between Easter services and even helped keep our stretch of Highway 20 clear of liLer.

I am blessed with 6 children, 3 boys and 3 girls. My oldest son, Jus%n, (36) lives in Michigan and is a trauma and

intensive care nurse. My daughter Jenny (27) lives in Norway and works for Laerdal, a nonprofit manufacturer of

medical equipment. Jenny is part of the team that designs and manufactures low cost, durable pre- and postnatal

equipment for those who live in emerging na%ons. Michael (25) ended his 4-year commitment in the U.S. Marine

Corps on April 10th. He s%ll lives in So. California where he hopes to con%nue in his desire to work State Fire Dept. My

2nd daughter Jamie (20) lives in Raleigh N.C. She aLends college, works at a restaurant and is headed for a career in

the medical field. I see a paLern here. Finally there is Katy (15) and Nikolay (13). They both live with their mother in

Grand Rapids, MI. High School and Middle School respec%vely and are good kids.

I enjoy the outdoors that is to be found here, biking, camping, skiing; try to run off the boundless energy from my dog,

Jesse. Now that the Spring has arrived, I umpire High School baseball anywhere from Burns to Madras.

I am truly living my dream here and desire to help the congrega%on however it is possible. Blessings.

While Junior Warden, Karen Hauswald, is on

hiatus recovering from major surgery, the

Building and Grounds Ministry con%nues to

meet and iden%fy needs for the Trinity

Campus. They support our Sexton, Mark

Schlerf, on bigger projects when many hands

are needed.

You will have no%ced our grounds were

weeded and spruced up for Holy Week and

Easter.

Mark Schlerf reported a couple of dead trees on the south side of St. Helens

were removed, a new guLer was installed at St. Helens to help with flow of

water away from the building and a water heater in SHH was repaired.

The B/G Ministry has approved the development of a long-range Master

Landscape Plan for the Trinity Campus. Cris Craig is developing the plan which

will address conserva%on of water, low maintenance, and crea%ng welcoming

spaces. Once the plan is approved by the B/G CommiLee, several landscapers

will be asked to submit bids. The Finance CommiLee will receive the report

along with the bids and make recommenda%ons to the Vestry.

You will also no%ce some areas that are already planted with annuals and

perennials that bring color to our campus. These areas are maintained by a

group of our ladies known as “Earth Mothers” who are master gardeners and

volunteer their talents to keep these flower beds weeded, fer%lized and filled

with plants.

The B/G Ministry has formed smaller sub-groups which are addressing ligh%ng

of our stained glass windows at Trinity, inventorying all our building plans to put

on a CD, and our winter issues focusing on the ice dams, Brooks Hall entrance,

and a new snow blower.

The Ministry will also priori%ze future Capital Improvement areas to an%cipate

what our campus buildings will need in the next 5-10 years. This will be very

helpful to the Finance CommiLee as they budget each year.

The B/G Ministry accomplished many projects in 2016 and are o8en “under the

radar” to many of us. This is a very dedicated group of parishioners who along

with our Sexton are con%nuing to make sure our buildings are in top shape.

They meet the first Wednesday of the month and would welcome anyone with

an interest in the maintenance of the Trinity campus to join them.

Contact Bob Hann or Tom Baxter if you have any ques%ons.

Our fundraising goal this year, our tenth, is to raise $30,000 and send 40 kids to summer camp at Ascension School in

Cove, Oregon. Trinity is again partnering with the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Central Oregon Partnerships for

Youth (COPY), Deschutes Family Recovery (Family Drug Court) and Big Brothers/Big Sisters to provide full

scholarships to at-risk kids, especially those who have been impacted by parental or guardian incarcera%on.

Circle of Love (COL) returns to evening mee%ngs for the summer. Circle of Love meets monthly

in fellowship as we relax and share a meal together. The subjects of discussion vary; the ideas

and comments of all are welcome and respected. We'll be mee%ng at Carolyn Richardson's home

on Thursday, May 11 at 5:30 p.m. Plan to bring a topping for our salad bar. Join us for an

evening of relaxed fellowship.

Carolyn's address is 2493 NE Saranac

Place. Her phone number is 541-408-

Greenwood or Revere, turn right on

Bennington Street (one block before the

roundabout at Butler Market) and then the

first right onto Saranac Place. If you have

The 2018 Women’s Retreat planning team will meet on

Tuesday, May 16, at 2:00 pm in the downstairs classroom at

Trinity. If you’re interested in joining our expanded band of

planners, please let Milree La%mer ([email protected]) know.

We’ll be making preliminary decisions about format, focus,

and job assignments, so if you have opinions, we invite you to

share them with us! Watch this space for informa%on as next

year’s retreat takes shape.

The upcoming Trinity Road Clean-Up will be on May 20th along an

assigned sec%on of US 20 northwest of Bend. If you would like to

par%cipate, meet the group at the Shopko parking lot at 8:30 AM to

carpool to the sec%on of Highway 20 we will clean up.

The sign-up sheet will be in Brooks Hall, or contact Tom Baxter, (406) 490-

0014, or Shirley Baxter, (406) 287-3073.

Shown in the photo of the last clean-up are Shirley Baxter, Tom Baxter,

Kake Huck, Ken Wellman and Jerry Lear. Not pictured are Inga Fryklund

and the Bell family (Chris, Suzanne, Noah and Jacob.)

This is our first cleanup a8er the winter weather, rescheduled from April.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks to Lorna Cahall, Trinity’s resident art historian, and her helper Judy

Montgomery for facilita%ng our March mee%ng! Lorna’s discussion of the

Virgin Mary and the Divine Feminine in art, par%cularly at Chartres Cathedral,

was fascina%ng and illumina%ng.

If you’d like to join the team planning future Trinity Women’s Collec%ve events,

let Barb Morris know ([email protected]). The future of the TWC is

unfolding, and we want your input

Celebra'ng the Children of Condega and realizing that it is not

too early to be thinking about this year’s fundraising efforts!

The Condega Dinner Auc%on CommiLee invite you to help us think about this and provide your input.

This summer, we want to offer services (such as gardening advice or a special dessert or …) and special %mes (such as

%ckets to an event or %me in a lovely place or…). The value of these contribu%ons would be set with the donor and

announced what is available in the Trumpet and Sunday Bulle%n. Please let us know if you have something to offer and

watch for announcements of the special items.

It’s also not too early to be thinking about dona%ons for this fall’s Condega Dinner Auc%on. We’d like to hear about

services or special %mes that you could offer this year.

And, equally important, we’d like to know “What’s on your list?” Is there something you’d like us to offer this year in

the Gi8 Shop or Auc%ons?

There is a poster in Brooks Hall where you can sign up and let us know:

• What you would like to offer this summer, and/or

• What you could offer for the fall Dinner Auc%on, and/or

• What you would like us to offer you!

As Parish Librarian, I have just completed an inventory of cataloged books in our

library. A total of 74 books and one movie that were not checked out, are

missing from the shelves. I sure would like everyone to check their nightstands,

living room coffee tables, and where ever else you curl up with your books and

see if you have one of our volumes. If you are s%ll reading it, or s%ll plan to, can

you please email me at ktmar%[email protected] and let me know which

one(s) you have? If you are finished, can you please return it to the church? I

know the library is o8en locked, so maybe you can leave it at the office front

desk and I will make sure it gets back on the shelf. Thank you!

We have many new donated books that I

am in the process of sor%ng and will add

them to the shelves. Many thanks to all

who donate – we really do have a fine

collec%on of books because of you. It is

always so much fun to look through

dona%ons and see what I can add, and I

hope you con%nue to enjoy using your

library.

This is from our hike in the Badlands on March

23 which was a warm sunny day, a surprise to

all.

Thanks, once more, to everyone who helped throughout the liturgies of Holy Week and Easter. Here
