Church Announcements For The Week of December 6, 2015

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION AT TRINITY: The Lord’s Supper is celebrated in this congregation in the belief and confidence that in this Sac-

rament, Christ is truly present, giving us His body and blood, in, with and under the forms of

bread and wine (1 Corinthians 10:16, Mark 14:22-24). As Christians (and specifically as Mis-

souri Synod Lutherans), we believe that it is through Jesus Christ alone that we have the hope of

eternal life. We believe that we are sinners in need of forgiveness and that in the Lord’s Supper, God gives that for-

giveness, strengthens our faith, and strengthens our union with Him and each other (Romans 3:23, Matthew 26:26-

28). As Christians, we also believe that as we come to the Lord’s Supper, we are making a commitment to amend our

sinful lives with the help of the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 2:19, Romans 8:6).

GUESTS AND VISITORS: Because those who eat and drink our Lord’s body and blood unworthily do so to their

harm and because Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, any who are not yet

instructed or confirmed, or who hold to a doctrinal position differing from that of this congregation and the Lutheran

Church - Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked first to speak with the pastor (1 Corin-

thians 11:27-29). At Trinity we practice Close Communion as adopted by our Synod in Convention.

ALCOHOL CONTENT IN WINE: The “red” wine in the chalice and in the outer rings of the communion cup tray

contains alcohol. The “white” wine in the center of the tray is de-alcoholized wine (alcohol nearly 100% removed).

You may use the red or white wine in the tray but please remember that the chalice has only “red” wine with normal

alcohol content.

Q: Typical question asked by visitors: Can only LCMS members take communion at Trinity Burr Ridge? A: The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod has never understood or applied the historic practice of close[d]

Communion in such a way as to mean that only LCMS members are permitted to commune at LCMS altars.

and pulpit fellowship invited to commune with us, but also that in certain extraordinary cases of pastoral care and in

emergencies members of churches not in fellowship with us may be given Communion. The Synod stated, for exam-

College / University Ministry: Is your son or daughter away at college or a university? We would like to

pray for them and include them in our ministry by mail program. Recently I read that most college/

university students walk away from their Christian faith unless they are connected with at least five other

Christians who pray and reach out to them while they are away. We would like to be "one of the five" that

reaches out to your son or daughter. Will you provide us with the name(s) of your student, the college they

are attending and their address? We will include them in our prayers and in our ministry by mail. Please

send or give the names of your students to me by email or by phone t [email protected] / 708-839-1200 x3. Thanks! -

2015-16 theme: Grace Alone – Life Together “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of

works, so that no one may boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

Happy New Year

This week is the first week of Advent. Advent is a noun and its meaning is “the arrival of a notable person,

thing or event.” Advent is derived from the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming,” which is a translation

of the Greek word parousia. In the Christian church it is the beginning of the New Year, leading up to

Christmas and including the four preceding Sundays. It also signifies the coming or second coming of Christ.

During Advent we are told to prepare for the coming of Christ. How do you prepare? Do you focus on Christmas and all that

is going on? Or, do you focus on the birth of Christ and its meaning? You can do both! But to do this you cannot become

dizzy focusing on all the many distractions around you.

A few years ago, Adrienne and I sat in row one of the Nutcracker Ballet. It was my first time seeing the production live. I

was amazed at the athleticism of the dancers. Ballerina’s use a technique called Spotting Point during the execution of many

turns. The goal of ‘spotting’ is to attain a constant orientation of the dancer’s head and eyes to prevent dizziness. While their

bodies rotate smoothly at a constant speed, the head rotates much faster, then stops, so to fix the dancer’s gaze on a single

location.

This Advent season keep your eyes focused on the coming of Christ to prevent Holiday dizziness.
