There are so many upgrades in the world today. In looking at making new purchases I have noticed that there upgrades for much of the technology that we use – phones once were 3G, then 4G, and now have upgraded to 5G, what once was surround sound has been upgraded to theater sound and ambient lighting. This is so common that you expect it for many of your purchases however, in a recent purchase I was taken back by the purchase options and upgrades that are available! This made me think that in a world of upgrades, people often think the new is the better upgrade. In marriage, we want to keep the relationship that we have but upgrade the quality. How can we upgrade to a happier marriage relationship? We can do this with focus on just what it is that we want

and how we can give to our spouse. First, focus on Speaking. No, I am not saying you need to always have the last word; however, if you must have the last word, allow it to be “I love you.” Commit to saying these powerful words often – especially when you may not want to, like in an argument. Second, focus on Serving. There are many times that we think our relationship needs an upgrade in the form of our spouse doing something different. But the upgrades we are responsible for come in the form of us serving our spouse. Do something spectacular to serve your spouse each week, each day! Third, focus on Encouraging. Stop making the list of wrongs or things that didn’t get done by your spouse. Start building a list of the hardships your spouse takes on and the good qualities they have. Take time each

Managing Marriage____________________ day to add to your list and encourage your spouse! Fourth, focus on Listening. Each of us can become better listeners and thereby strengthen our communication skills. Schedule times to just sit and listen to one another. This sharing deepens the bond and relational intimacy by building trust and empathy for your spouse. Finally, focus on Creating. Create memories together by actively dating one another. If you have children, take time to build your marriage which is the foundation of the family and the best thing that you can do for your children. If you are busy with work, take time out of your busyness to create a lasting memory of who is really important. In all that you do, allow your focus to be directed toward creating the marriage upgrade you want most.

“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you

are doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11

It is hard to believe that I have now been here over four full years. As I look at some of the things that we have accomplished, I am quickly reminded of who has been working through all of these blessings! As I continue to grow as Christ’s servant, I invite your feedback as we walk through regular evaluations of ministry. Share with me areas that you see Trinity needing to grow, areas where I need to grow as one of Trinity’s shepherds, and where we are doing well. This evaluation provides opportunity for us to grow, for the Body of Christ to help in my blind spots, and for our mutual encouragement in living the Christian life! Lent provides a wonderful opportunity to reflect on all that Jesus has done for us in paying for our sins; however, it is also a great time to respond to that amazing

grace! Project “Love in Deed” encourages you to take up something for Lent in showing Love in Deed to others! Look for these opportunities to serve others and continue to search for ways you can do Trinity +1. If you are regular in worship, add one activity to your regular routine (bible study or a small group perhaps). If you are not regular in worship or devotional life, add one more experience to your Christian life. Consider growing in your giving with an extra financial gift or serving with your time. This, Trinity +1 mindset will help each child of God become prepared and equipped as we serve others and witness to Him! Trinity has extended a call to Pastor Matthew Canaday and his family. Pastor, Bethany and the boys have been held in our prayers as they deliberated the calls that they have. They have discerned that the Lord is calling them to accept the call to serve at our associate pastor. We rejoice in the faithfulness of

God to send workers into His church for His purposes as we eager-ly await to see how He will bless the kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ through the Canaday family! In the time of transition, please continue to keep them in your prayers as we count the days when they are here serving alongside us at Trinity! Lent provides us several opportunities to grow in His Word and in worship of Him. The weekend worship services will center around God’s invitation for each and every one of us to be His witnesses. Our midweek focus will look at the great “I AM” statements from John’s Gospel. Our devotional series for 2020 walks us through the catechism and deepens our love and understanding of the foundational teachings of Scripture. Be sure to walk through the catechism with us and strengthen your faith as you bear witness to the Great I AM! In Christ, Pastor Henderson

March 2020: TAX SEASON IS HERE!

TAX SEASON IS HERE: Avoid IRS Impersonators. The IRS will not call you with threats of jail or lawsuits. The IRS will not send you an unsolicited email suggesting you have a refund or that you need to update your account. The IRS will not request any sensitive information online or on the phone. These are ALL scams, and they are persistent. Don’t fall for them. Follow these 5 basic security tips during this year's tax season.

1. Protect personal and financial information online -Use security software for computers and phones - Keep your phone and computer up to date -Shop only on secure websites - Look for the “https” in the web address bar 2. Learn to recognize phone scams -The IRS does not call demanding payment with jail or lawsuit threats -The IRS will not call and ask for personal information; like social security numbers, banking information, or credit card number. 3. Learn to recognize phishing emails -Email that poses as a company or person you know asking for personal information -If you are not sure - Call the person that sent you the email before you open an attachment or provide personal information 4. Create strong passwords to protect online accounts -Use long phrases as your password and different passwords for each account -Use two-factor whenever it is offered 5. Recognize clues of identity theft -An e-filed return is rejected because a duplicate is already on file with the IRS -An unexpected receipt of a tax transcript or an IRS notice is received

Jacob’s team was playing an away game a few weeks ago that was coming down to the wire. In the last minute, Covenant pulled ahead by a shot and had seconds to seal the game with one final layup. The gymnasium was one of the kind you see in the movie Hoosiers - spectators sitting on 50+ year old wooden bleachers, barely a foot of out-of-bounds space all around the perimeter, and a stage at one end. Can you see it? Now picture what we all ended up replaying in our minds in slow motion. Cade, the young man with the ball, a senior, is fouled on the shot, pushed from behind into the stage. The trainer covers his hand as they walk off the court. He says to his team, “It’s broken.” The season is over for him.

Along with so so many others, Jacob is heartbroken. This is the student who’d befriended him before the year ever began and has become like a big brother. These are the moments when we pour out our hearts to God and cry, “How can this be a part of Your plan? I can’t see it!”

Cade had surgery a few days later. I received this text from his mom: “So there is an awesome doctor giving Cade some relaxation meds and a nerve block. He said he used to coach Jacob! God is so good. They had a nice conversation, and it has added to Cade’s comfort level.”

Knowing Jacob was on his way to school, I called him and told him about the text. We marveled over how long Jesus had been planning for that moment. Meeting Coach Jeremy 8 years ago, having him as coach a couple different times, playing AAU with his son, and catching up with him a few months ago. He knew where Jacob was playing, and asked Cade about Jacob, having no idea of their close bond.

Can you see it? At least a little bit of it? Whether or not we can see the whole of God’s plan, we know we can rest in His faithfulness. God cares for the sparrow, He cares for the broken hand. How much He cares for His children! Things we may not understand can be part of God’s plan to love us, and sometimes we are part of His plan to love others! Thank you, Lord, for your faithful and sure plans for us!

Another Jesus Sighting ~ This was shared with me via email! Friday morning, while students were getting ready for a new school day, a student dropped her water

bottle, and it broke into pieces. Tears began as water spilled all over the floor. One woman stopped to help her clean it up. That woman then left Trinity and went straight to the store. She came back with a brand new water bottle, Fiji water to fill it, and a card to help turn the student’s day around. She simply said, 'There's so much negativity in this world, I just wanted to make her day better.” Wow.

When the unexpected gift was delivered to the student, the smile on her face was more powerful evidence of the love she’d been shown than the water bottle she held in her hand.

Enrollment of New Students for 2020-21 begins on March 1st! The Trinity Hornet Players will perform Charlotte’s Web on March 12th (1pm, 7pm) and March 13 (7pm). Tickets are available at the Atrium desk during school hours or show night at the door. Adult $10, Senior $7, Child (5-13) $2

Remember, you’re always welcome to join us for Chapel on Wednesdays at 2pm!

Lent is here--another Lenten season. What is Lent about? If you ask someone in the Church you might get a lot of answers because we focus our thoughts and prayers on a variety of things during Lent. Repentance. Fasting. The Cross. 40 Days. Lamb of God. Purple. Soup Suppers. Have Mercy. Suffering. Sorrow. Peter. Judas. Gethsemane. The Lord’s Supper. LOVE. For God so loved the world… Let’s add one more thought to encourage our prayer and meditation during Lent: the many ways the Lord Jesus has traded places with us. Beginning with His incarnation--his becoming One with us--Emmanuel, He traded His kingly throne for a manger bed, a helpless babe. The great love that the Father has for us sent his beloved Son to take our place and to take our sin upon himself.

St. Augustine: Confessions says it beautifully: “He knew hunger, he who provides food for all. He knew thirst, through whom all drink is created. And who, in a spiritual sense, is bread for all who are hungry And spring-water for those who are thirsty. He was exhausted by his travels on earth, He who made himself for us the way to heaven. In the presence of revilers he became as one incapable of speech and hearing, He through whom the dumb spoke and the deaf heard. He was bound fast, He who freed the infirm from their bonds. He was scourged, He who banished every scourge of pain from people’s bodies. He was crucified, He who put an end to our crosses. He died, He who raised the dead to life. But He is also risen, never to die again.”

God bless your Lenten journey.

On Ash Wednesday we kicked off Project: Love in Deed. This Lent, we are encouraging kids, youth, and adults to “be doers of the Word, and not hearers only” (James 1:22). There are flyers in the Atrium tailored to each age group with tons of ideas where we can live out our “love in deed” with acts of kindness. Please feel free to stop by our Atrium to pick up a sheet and hang it in your home, your break room at work, your kid’s soccer practice, anywhere! When you’ve done your act of love, feel free to come back to the Atrium bulletin board, and fill in our ’LOVE’ letters and watch our ’love’ grow! Help us spread Project: Love in Deed to Crown Point and beyond! Any questions please reach out to Elizabeth Gadbaw or Melissa Maxwell.

Bring coffee or snacks to a police officer or fire fighter, make time to call an old friend, shovel a neighbor’s driveway, pay for a stranger’s coffee or meal, thank a teacher for the good work they do,

hold the door open for a stranger, organize a family meal and appreciate being together, offer to cook or clean for a family who has recently welcomed a new baby, compliment a stranger,

text a friend who has been feeling really down lately, pick up trash from the sidewalk, leave an especially generous tip and a thank you note for a server that seems stressed, and many many more!

Our students have been busy little artists! This past month our Art teacher, Mrs. Yates,

hosted an exploratory workshop for our preschoolers. They focused on fine motor skills

while creating abstract shapes. The artwork pictured are print works and Romero Britto inspired pieces

by our Kindergarten and 1st graders.

How did it get to be March already? As I write this the snowfall this year has been below average. By the time you read this, that may have all changed and we could have gotten our large March blizzard. We’ll see. The low snowfall amounts have allowed our ever-popular budget line item to stay much lower than it could have been. We’ll see how the rest of the winter season plays out. We are hoping to be able to replace the red carpet in the church sanctuary. It’s beginning to show its age. We are hoping to fund this outside of the budget. Perhaps a timely memorial or gift would be able to cover the $2800 to $3000 cost. We are working with a new insurance carrier to review our coverages and premiums. We may be able to increase our liability protection and not increase our premiums. We’ll see. We are hoping to make some minor upgrades to the Altar area in the Sanctuary. Looking into a battery powered eternal light. The existing candle burns oil. We normally fill it on Sunday mornings and it burns until Thursday. It’s dark again until the next Sunday. A batter powered candle would last much longer and save us some of the cost of the oil. The other altar candles also burn oil but they are only lit during services. We’re looking for a good battery powered candle to fit that need. Trinity League has offered money to fund an upgrade to the lighting in the Church Kitchen. Ryan Johnson is working with our supplier to come up with a solution. The Parsonage and Camp House are stable while vacant and being monitored via Wi-Fi connections. Gary Diekelmann

Reminder: Men’s Bible Study at Schoop’s on Thursdays at 6:30 am. Join us as we continue reading Job and learning about not only what it is like to live with suffering, but also how to appropriately respond to someone who is in the midst of suffering. We’d love to see you!

We are blessed at Trinity to be able to reach out to people in need, oftentimes people that seem different than us, but when we get to know them find that they are God’s children just the same as us, the only thing they’re lacking are the opportunities that are open to most of us. Some of our people are willing to go to these remote areas, but the mission belongs to all of us, so if you can support them financially, it would honor our Lord and He will work through His people.
