TRINITY HIGH SCHOOL & SIXTH FORM CENTRE Dear Parents and Students, WATER SAFETY The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), the drowning prevenon charity, has issued a warning as temperatures across Britain are set to hit a scorching 35C. The RLSS has appealed for people to take note of simple safety messages to avoid a repeat of last summer’s tragedies when many people lost their lives cooling off in unlifeguarded open water, not suitable for swimming. Around 400 people needlessly drown in the UK every year and thousands more suffer injury, some life changing, through near-drowning experiences. Pung this into context, one person dies every 20 hours in the UK and drowning is the third highest cause of accidental death of children in the UK. So, with temperatures on the rise, it is important people make the most of the weather and enjoy the water but do so safely at sites designated for swimming. All of our students in Years 9 and 10 at Trinity High School have taken part in RLSS drowning prevenon workshops and we would encourage all students to remember what they learnt in these and stay safe. WATER BOTTLE With the warm weather, could we please remind students to bring a water bole into school. Fizzy drinks are not allowed and will be confiscated. Dear Parents and Students, WATER SAFETY The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), the drowning prevention charity, has issued a warning as temperatures across Britain are set to hit a scorching 35C. The RLSS has appealed for people to take note of simple safety messages to avoid a repeat of last summer’s tragedies when many people lost their lives cooling off in unlifeguarded open water, not suitable for swimming. Putting this into context, one person dies every 20 hours in the UK and drowning is the third highest cause of accidental death of children in the UK. So, with temperatures on the rise, it is important people make the most of the weather and enjoy the water but do so safely at sites designated for swimming. All of our students in Years 9 and 10 at Trinity High School have taken part in RLSS drowning prevention workshops and we would encourage all students to remember what they learnt in these and stay safe. YEAR 11 INTO 12 INDUCTION DAY Monday 29th June saw the Year 11’s who are intending to come into the Sixth Form from September return to Trinity for an Induction Day. The day started with toast and a squash in the common room, before a précis of the expectations of the Sixth Form were explained. Students were made further aware of what our ‘Business Dress’ expectations are for September. After the break we all moved to meet the Oakerwood staff who were in charge of the ‘bouncy castles and inflatables’. They indeed commented after this session how enthusiastic and ‘go for it’ all participants had been. After lunch the day finished with a team quiz. Well done to all who attended! Have a relaxing summer and see you on the 20th August for GCSE results and Sixth Form signup in the Main Hall.

COMMUNITY SAFETY DAY On Wednesday 1st July, Year 9 took part in a Community Safety Day as part of their PSHE programme. We had visitors from Redditch Borough Council, West Mercia Police, Tiller Research, Future Youth Investment, Maries Counselling and even an Indian Dance company, BellyJewels, to lead students in workshops on a variety of subjects including Drugs, Legal Highs & Energy Drinks, Hate Crime Awareness, Child Sexual Exploitation, Alcohol Usage, Personal Safety, Anti-social Behaviour and Healthy Living. It was a really enjoyable day and our students learnt a lot about issues that affect our community on a daily basis. They even got to learn about other cultures whilst learning some Bollywood dance moves and see what having ‘beer-goggles’ really feels like. We would like to say a special thank you to the following for running the workshops and making the day such a success; Sarah Kelsey, Peter Rose, Louise Crouch, Sarah Maries, Miss Matharu, Alasdair Baker, Kelvin James and Emma Wheate.

FOOD MASTERCLASS We were delighted to have Chef Graham from Warwick University join us at Trinity to run a Masterclass in fruit and vegetable garnishes with some Year 9 students who will be taking food next year and some of our existing Year 10 Food students. The class was run to demonstrate to students how they can garnish and decorate dishes to give them that additional wow factor. Chef Graham brought along some amazing watermelon carvings and then demonstrated to the students how to cut cucumbers, oranges and apples to make interesting shapes and how to make a bouquet from a mooli radish and carrot. Once he demonstrated, pupils were then challenged to have ago. The Masterclass has already impacted on food lessons as in recent “Ready Steady Cook” sessions the Year 9’s were show casing their skills to the amazement of the rest of the students who said “Wow, how do you know how to do that?!”

REDDITCH HAS TALENT Congratulations to Emily, Becky and Georgia who claimed 1st and 2nd place for Trinity High School in this year’s Redditch Has Talent which was held at the Palace Theatre on 25th June. There was only 1 point between the two acts entered by Trinity as they beat off completion from 11 other finalists from across the town to claim the top spots. Becky and Georgia had the audience crying with laughter securing 2nd place with their comedy sketch where they play two Jamaican grandmothers watching a series of popular television programmes and Emily had the audience spell bound with her rendition of ‘I see Fire’ by Ed Sheeran.

All three of the girls hope to use this success as platform from which to build with Emily being offered a live performance spot at the Palace and Becky and Georgia being encouraged to enter next year’s Britain’s Got Talent by their chaperone who has previously worked on the show.

SPORTS NEWS SAINSBURY’S SCHOOL GAMES On Tuesday 23rd June, the following students attended the Worcestershire School Games as Sports Leaders where they helped run and organise the ‘Super 6 Athletics’ event: Liam, Chloe, Liam, Amy, Elliot and Kamil. They were a credit to our school and had an amazing experience, working alongside other students from all over Worcestershire they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Well done.

Mason and James took part in the School Games playing Boccia. They were a player short so a Year 8 student from Walkwood kindly said he would make up the team. They played 5 games, winning 3. This took them through to the semi-finals where they won the first match. However, there had been a mix up and it was discovered that the school they played against hadn’t made it through to the semi-finals. They then had to play again against King Charles 1 where they won 4-0. Well done boys and a big thank you to Walkwood for letting one of their students play. They also had the opportunity to meet Tim Bailey who won a gold medal in the 2012 Olympics for Slalom Canoeing.

ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP 2015 On one of the hottest days of the year Trinity High School held their athletics championship at the Abbey Stadium. The students were able to take part in a range of track and field events as well as a hand ball tournament. The level of participation was fantastic and students were thoroughly engaged and competitive. Olympic swimmer Joe Roebuck attended the event spending time speaking to students about his professional swimming career as well as showing students his impressive collection of medals. The results: Year 9 Overall Points Malvern 1454 Bredon 1314 Kinver 1125 Year 10 Overall Points Bredon 1246 Kinver 1107 Malvern 941 Overall Winning House 1st Place Bredon 2560 points 2nd Place Malvern 2395 points 3rd Place Kinver 2232 points

It was a brilliant event thank you to all students for their hard work and participation. A huge thank you to all staff who supported the event.

THOMAS VALE, HEALTH & SAFETY, DRAGONS DEN CHALLENGE Thomas Vale Construction have challenged our students to invent a new product that will help improve health and safety on a construction site. Last Wednesday, a group of 10 students from Year 9 and 10 were invited to Icentrum Digital Plaza at Millennium Point. Icentrum is currently under construction by Thomas Vale. The purpose of the visit was for students to gather information and ideas to help produce a new health and safety product. When we arrived at the site we were greeted by Shazad Ahmed from Thomas Vale and two site managers. After a safety briefing we changed in to site boots, high visibility jackets, safety glasses, gloves and hard hats ready for the tour. We climbed three storeys to the top of the building stopping along the way to gather information and question the staff. Students had the opportunity to take photographs and find out whether their ideas would work in practice. The following day students attended a workshop to finalise their ideas and work on their presentation. They will present their ideas to ‘The Dragons’ at Thomas Vale head office in Stourport on Severn. ‘It was great to have the opportunity to actually go on a live building site’ Jack (Year 10) ‘It was amazing, a unique experience’ Jack (Year 9) WHAT’S THE POINT? On Friday, a group of five Year 9 Students attended a Maths Inspirational Lecture called “What’s the Point?” The show was hosted by Matt Parker (in the photo) who is a stand up comedian, and is also a mathematician. Most of us in the group volunteered in various activities which showed how maths we learn in school, is used in real life. For example – did you know that birds use maths to gauge the mean velocity when they fly in synchronisation? This is called ‘murmuration’. The show had three different speakers who all used maths in their day to day jobs. One of the speakers was a structural engineer who had travelled extensively building stadiums across the world. We really enjoyed seeing how much maths goes into building such huge buildings and were shocked to see some of the consequences that could happen if the engineers get the numbers wrong. In the end there was an opportunity to ask questions to the speakers which our team did. It was a very positive experience and one that will remain in our memories forever.
