Trinity's Mission Statement

“ To be a Christ-centered parish, that knows Christ and makes Him known to others

by sharing our gifts, striving for justice,

and respecting the dignity of every human being.”

A Word From Fr. Jim Dear People of God at Trinity, Last Sunday (Aug.19th) early in the morning while standing in front of the Chapel of the Resurrection, sipping a cup of coffee, and waiting for our 8:00 a.m. service to begin, I felt a coolness in the air that was a reminder that fall is on the way. The touch of that coolness following the hot days of summer took me back to my growing up days. For me this time of year was a time of excitement and anticipation. It meant school would be starting soon and with that the getting together with friends I had not seen much over the summer, the return to old and familiar routines, and the anticipation of new happenings, new activities, and new friends. I experience those same feelings today, especially here at Trinity as we move back from The Chapel of the Res-urrection to the main church in the early fall of each year. There is a return to the familiar and the excitement and anticipation of the new. This issue of the “Topics” makes that apparent. We resume many of our familiar programs and activities and at the same time try to provide new and different opportunities for mission and ministry in Christ’s name. As you read through this issue, please pray for God’s guidance along the path of your continuing journey in faith. And also, always remember that you walk that path not alone, but as a part of this loving family we call Trinity Church. Yours in the love of God,

The Prophetic Tradition of Israel Fall 2012 Study Group

What is a prophet? How did the “Prophetic Tradition” develop?

What were the messages of the prophets? What echoes of the prophets appear in Jesus stories?

These questions and other topics related to the “Prophetic Tradition of Ancient Israel” will be the focus of this year’s Fall Study Groups. We will have a Monday evening 7:00 p.m. group that will begin meeting September 10th and a Wednesday morning 11:00 a.m. group that will begin meeting on

September 12th. This will be an eight-session course.

Join us to learn, share, and have fun as we explore our faith heritage!!

For further information or if you have any questions, contact Fr. Jim.

Attention All Knitters

Anyone who is a knitter or who might be interested in learning to knit is welcome, and our purpose that night will be to determine whether or not there is sufficient interest in beginning a knitting group.

We will also discuss possible projects both for our own parish and as an outreach project. Please speak to Tish Malarkey if you need more information (544-3296) or feel free to just attend the meeting. Faithfully, Tish

A Thought about Stewardship The ecology movement raises our consciousness about our “endangered planet.”

God has given us stewardship of all creation. But, we have failed that trust. We humans have littered, polluted, and destroyed our environment. But we can help to change all that.

It is time for us and especially those of us that call ourselves Christians to provide the leadership for a reverence and care of all God’s creation. We need to capture the sense of the Hebrew Scriptures that state we must care for our children and our children’s children and we must do this by being good stew-ards of God’s earth today. What are you doing to protect and improve our environment?

United Thank Offering approves $75,000 for new diocesan headquarters in Kajo Keji

[Bishop Paul, June 27]

I have just learned that the United Thank Offering has approved a grant of $75,000.00 to be administered by us for the new diocesan headquarters in Kajo-Keji. I am profoundly grateful to

UTO, and to all of you who support UTO each and every year. I also need to thank Charlie Barebo, who shepherded Bishop Anthony's application through the process. By the way, the overseas grants do not compete with domestic grants, about which I have not yet heard. The past ten years of our relationship with Kajo-Keji have taught us great lessons about mission, and it is more than encouraging having this assistance from the United Thank Offering. There will be more information coming. Again, my thanks

to the UTO and to all of you who so faithfully make its mission possible.

Next United Thank Offering “INGATHERING” at Trinity

Our next “ingathering” here at Trinity will be on S unday, September 30th. Bring your “Blue Boxes” or count up your UTO coins and write a check. Our offering will be presented along with the offerings of

the other parishes from the diocese at the Diocesan Convention on October 5 & 6.

A word from “Trinity” the Church Mouse Dear Fellow Parishioners, Just remember that each coin you drop in your “blue box” in thanksgiving for a blessing that God has bestowed upon you goes to help bless another’s life. Trinity

Welcome back to Church School!

Welcome back, everyone! I hope you have all had a very relaxing summer and enjoyed time with family and friends.

Sunday School will be kicking off a new school year starting on September 9 with Children’s Chapel at 9:45. Parents will need to fill out registration forms during that time. Our theme this year will be the Ten Commandments. Sunday school will again be available for all children ages 3 and up. Children under 3 must be accompanied by a parent. Weekly, our services start with Children’s chapel at 9:45 a.m. at the children’s altar in the main church. At 10:00 a.m. the students are escorted to the undercroft for classes and will return to the service at the offertory for the remainder of the service and be seated with their families. There is a “soft space” available during services, for preschoolers only, near the main entrance of the church. It is requested that school-aged children remain in the pews with their families during the service and reserve the soft space for our younger children. Activity bags are also available in a basket near the main entrance for the children’s use during the service. These bags are to be returned to the basket when leaving the service. Other dates to remember: October 7, there will be NO CHURCH SCHOOL that day due to the Blessing of the Animals. October 28, there will be NO CHURCH SCHOOL due to it being Consecration Sunday with only one service at 9:30 with a parish luncheon to follow. If any student is interested in training to become an acolyte, please contact Fr. Jim. We again are in need of donations of snack foods, juice, and small water bottles for our Church School classes. Donations of cookies (without peanuts due to al-lergies,) cereal bars, fruit snacks, animal crackers, cheese crackers, pretzels, etc. are always appreciated. Hope to see you all on September 9! Submitted by Dawn Burns

YOUTH GROUP NEWS

The youth group will continue to meet this year and welcomes all youth from the parish and their friends who are in grade 4 to grade 12. We are working on our fall schedule and hope to kick off the season with miniature golf and ice cream at Heislers. Once again, we plan to decorate a tree for the Festival of Trees and donate it to a family in need and are encouraging youth group members to bring their ideas for the tree theme to the first meeting. More information will be sent to youth group members about a fall schedule and meeting dates in the near future. If you have any questions, please contact Barb Tokarz at [email protected]

JUNIORS CHURCH SCHOOL GROUP

The Juniors Group returns this year on October 14th. This class is designed for older students who attend regularly and are able to discuss and work with a creative mix to the Sunday school curriculum. Classes will be held between services from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. The students will then either serve at the altar as acolytes, read, remain in the congregation, or sign up to assist the other teachers at Sunday School. Our topics will include stories familiar to the children but add some of the details they haven’t discussed. Last year we enjoyed learning about Moses, watching the epic “The Ten Commandments” and producing our own version of “MOSES.” This year we will study the Stations of the Cross. We also plan to continue our social activities together and as part of the parish youth group.

Please note:

October 20 – No class

October 28 – No class and NO CHURCH SCHOOL due to it being Consecration Sunday with only one service at 9:30 with a parish luncheon to follow.

“JOIN THE ‘RANKS!”

This year, your Vestry has approved two projects that will serve to maintain our magnificent pipe organ in the sanctuary of our church, Austin Opus 1040. During the summer months, the first project has been completed. This project involved the re-leathering and sealing of the wooden “stoppers” of the largest and loudest rank of wooden pipes in the pedal division of our organ; the 16’ Pedal Bourdon. This rank of 44 pipes sounds the 8’ Pedal Bourdon, the 16’ Pedal Bourdon, and part of the 32’ Resultant. This rank of pipes is what Bach referred to as the “cantus firmus” [lowest sounding voice] -- or foundation of our instrument. The loose “stoppers” were causing this rank to be perpetually out of tune. During June and July, this rank of pipes, except for the very lowest twelve notes which are too big to easily move, were removed, repaired, and reinstalled; the lowest-sounding and largest pipes were done in-house. The cost of this work was $2,800.00. The second project, scheduled for later this year, will repair the expression shades and the expression shade motors on the swell and great/choir divisions of the organ. If you attended Mark Laubach’s recital in April, perhaps you noticed the distracting noises that occurred when the expression shades opened and closed. The shades will be taken out, refurbished, and reinstalled, and the motors that drive them will be replaced. The cost of this work is $5,800.00. It may seem to some that a lot of money is spent on the maintenance and care of our pipe organ, but just as we would certainly act to fix the roof if it should leak, and fix the furnace if it needed repair, we must also exercise due diligence to maintain our instruments. Recently, I had the opportunity to talk to both John Paul Buzard, President of Buzard Organ Company of Chicago, and Patrick J. Murphy, President of PJM Organ Company who services our own instrument, and was intrigued to learn that the cost to replace pipe organs today is about $40,000.00 per rank. That means the replacement value of our Sanctuary organ would be -- get ready for this one -- $1.6 million; and to replace the organ in the Chapel of the Resurrection would be $160,000.00. Few people realize that the largest investment any church has -- aside from the buildings themselves, are the pipe organs contained within those buildings. It makes perfect sense to avoid replacement by continuing to maintain and preserve the wonderful historical treasure in our sanctuary not only for our own musical and liturgical enrichment, but for the enrichment of coming generations. Because of a very generous gift from one of our parishioners, half of the cost of both of these projects to maintain our organ in the sanctuary is already covered. We have received several other gifts from parishioners and friends of our parish for these projects also. Please prayerfully consider “Joining the Ranks” of those who have already stepped forward and so generously given to help maintain our organ and help continue the historic integrity and regal majesty of this fine instrument.

The Almighty has given us the gift of music, and with it we will offer praise to God.

-adapted from Julian of Norwich -Howard Mitchell ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I AM “JOINING THE ‘RANKS ‘” WITH MY CONTRIBUTION TO THE ORGAN FUND TO HELP PAY FOR THE WORK BEING DONE TO MAINTAIN OUR MAJESTIC AND HISTORIC AUSTIN PIPE OR-GAN.

Unheard For Several Years, But Certainly Not Forgotten

In the June “Topics”, the article entitled “Let Us All Celebrate the Nonagenarian Among Us” talked about the fact that the Feast of All Saints this year will mark the 90th anniversary of the dedication of our magnificent pipe organ, Austin Opus 1040. This year also marks the 90th anniversary of the organ in the Chapel of the Resurrection, Austin Opus 1041. Although we have not heard this organ for several years because it is in need of rebuilding, we certainly should not forget that this small, beautifully voiced instrument still exists and, with some work, will be ready to support our music and liturgy again in the future. This beautiful little organ was named the “Chorophone” Organ by the Austin Organ Company, and Austin began manufacturing these small instruments in 1916. The “Chorophone” Organ was designed specifically for small chapels and homes, and was developed by the Austin Organ Company to compete with other small organs being produced at that time such as the Moller “Artiste,” an excellent working example of which can be found in St. James Episcopal Church, Schuylkill Haven. The “Chorophone” Organ was mass produced to include four ranks of pipes, with a total pipe count of 316, contained in a carved wooden case. A two-manual and pedal console could be either attached to the case or detached for a slightly higher price. Because of the limited space in our Chapel gallery, our Austin “Chorophone” organ has a detached console. These small organs all had the same configuration of pipes: A wooden Bourdon, 97 pipes, speaking at 16’ (pedal), 8’, 4’, 2 2/3’, & 2’ pitches A metal Open Diapason (in façade) 73 pipes speaking at 8’ & 4’ pitches A metal Dolce, 73 pipes, speaking at 16’ (from tenor C), 8’ & 4’ pitches A metal Salicional, 73 pipes, speaking at 8’ & 4’ pitches. The “Chorophone” Organ was priced less than $2,000.00 including freight, installation, and a five year warranty. Austin continued to produce “Chorophones” for 24 years, until 1940; with a total production of 128 instruments. Founded from the burned ashes of the Cough and Warren Organ Factory which was founded in 1893, The Austin Organ Company was incorporated in February, 1899. It was in that rebuilt factory that the first Austin Universal Windchest -- which was, in part, responsible for the great success of the Austin Organ Company -- was developed. Because Austin was noted for building quality instruments, the Austin Organ Company of Hartford, Connecticut is the only one of the major organ manufacturers of the Grand Period of Organ Building in America that continues operating into the 21st century, outlasting their contemporaries, the Moller, Skinner, and Kimball Companies by many decades. Our Austin “Chorophone” Organ served us for nearly eighty years before needing repair—very impressive for a $2,000.00 investment! Approximately ten years ago the wind chest was replaced, but the need of re-leathering in the console and winding system and the failure of the electrical components in the console finally took their toll, silencing this beautiful little instrument for the last several years. It is important not to forget about this fine instrument. It is a valuable instrument in the history of organ building and it is also a valuable piece of the history of our Parish. As a Parish, we need to consider dedicating funds not only to maintain the superb instrument in our church sanctuary, but also encourage our Vestry and our Cemetery Board to make future provision for the restoration of the beautiful Austin Opus 1041 “Chorophone” organ in our Chapel gallery. NEWS FROM MARION PRICE TRUST

Senior Adventures-Still time to join us for an adventure. On September 27th we will be traveling to Tamaqua to La

Dolce Casa. In October we will be venturing to Penn’s Peak on the 18th for the King Henry & the Showmen Anniver-

sary Special. The cost of the Penn’s Peak Trip is $43 for a family style dinner and show that promises to be tasty and

entertaining. Please call Kathy Burda at 621-3220 to make your reservations for one or both trips today. Space is lim-

ited.

Operation We Care-Thank you for all the monetary, food and personal care items you donated to the mailing in May.

We are planning for a November mailing. Thanks to our extreme coupon shopper we still have enough razors and tooth-

paste. Please bear in mind as you are shopping now for our local troops it will be winter when they receive our boxes. If

you know of any local servicemen or women serving our country in the Middle East, please call Kathy Burda at 621-

3220 with their contact information.

Charitable Giving-In this present economy, many legitimate charities need your help. Before giving, however, you

should make sure that a charity deserves your contribution by following these tips for informed giving:

Know your charity. Do not be tricked by an impressive sounding name or one that is similar to a well-known charity.

Too many “charities” try to take advantage of another charity’s good name and reputation by using an almost identical

name, symbol or logo.

Know how your money will be spent. Before donating, ask for and read printed materials about the charity’s finances

and programs. Find out how much of your donation actually goes to helping people and program services, as opposed to

fundraising and administrative expenses.

Telephone solicitations are typically conducted by professional fundraisers on behalf of the charity. Ask the caller if he/

she is paid or a volunteer and how much the charity receives of each dollar donated.

Do not be pressured into giving. Take time to think about your donation. High-pressure tactics and sob stories often are

the signs of unscrupulous operators.

You have no obligation to pay for greeting cards, tickets, advertising, merchandise or any other item you never asked

for, nor are you obligated to return them.

If you decide to contribute, pay by check. Make check out to the charity, not a company or the individual collecting the

donations. Never pay cash or use your credit card number in response to a request by a stranger. Reprinted from the

“Consumer Protection Booklet” from the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. 1-800-441-2555.

September is Atrial Fibrillation Month. Atrial fibrillation is an irregular and often rapid heart rate that commonly causes

poor blood flow to the body. During atrial fibrillation, the heart’s two upper chambers beat chaotically and irregularly –

out of coordination with the two lower chambers of the heart. Atrial fibrillation symptoms include heart palpitations,

shortness of breath and weakness. Episodes of atrial fibrillation can come and go, or you may have chronic atrial fibrilla-

tion. Although atrial fibrillation itself usually isn’t life-threatening, it is a serious medical condition that sometimes re-

quires emergency treatment. It can lead to complications such as a stroke or heart failure.

Some people with atrial fibrillation have no symptoms and are unaware of their condition until it is discovered during a

physical examination. Those who do have atrial fibrillation symptoms may experience palpitations, decreased blood

pressure, weakness, lightheadedness, confusion, shortness of breath & chest pain.

Risk factors for atrial fibrillation include age, heart disease, high blood pressure, drinking alcohol, family history, thyroid

problems, & sleep apnea.

If you think you have atrial fibrillation, it is critical that you make an appointment with your family doctor. If atrial fib-

rillation is found early, your treatment may be easier and more effective. Your doctor may order an Electrocardiogram

(EKG), Holter monitor, Echocardiogram, Blood tests and a Chest X-ray.

The treatment option best for you will depend on how long you’ve had atrial fibrillation, how bothersome your symp-

toms are and the underlying cause of your atrial fibrillation. Generally, the goals of treating atrial fibrillation are to reset

the rhythm or control the rate and prevent blood clots. The strategy you & your doctor choose depends on many factors,

including whether you have other problems with your heart and if you’re able to take medications that can control your

heart rhythm. In some cases, you may need a more invasive treatment, such as surgery or medical procedures using

catheters.

If you have chest pain, seek emergency medical assistance immediately. Chest pain could signal that you are hav-

ing a heart attack.

That period that is affectionately referred to as “Medicare Open Enrollment” is soon upon us.

Whether you have original Medicare, a Medicare Advantage Plan or a Part D prescription plan you have the opportunity

each year to make any changes you want. October 15th to December 7th is a brief period when you can and should

review the new Medicare plan options with your current coverage. The drug formularies, monthly premiums, co-pays

and deductibles can change each year. Comparing plans during the open enrollment period is the best way to ensure that

you don’t miss out on possible savings. To be sure you are getting the best coverage at a price you can afford

call Kathy Burda at 621-3220 to help you review the plan options.
