Dear Parents,

Imagine what it would be like to live under constant surveillance, with people watching and copying everything you do. Would you live your life differently? Approach situations differently? Modify your behaviour at times because you know you are being watched and copied?

The reality is that we do not need to imagine this situation because our role as parents means that we are under constant surveillance, being watched, learnt from and copied at all times by our children. Our children learn as much, if not more from us, by how we behave as they do by what we say to them. Confusion reigns when what we are asking and demanding off our children does not correlate with our own behaviour. We are role models 24/7, particularly at the impressionable age our children are at in primary school.

Of recent times we have had some serious issues in the carpark. Aggression between parents, swearing, unsubstantiated gossip and blatant breaking of the carpark rules. I wonder if these parents would act differently if they stopped and considered the modelling they are demonstrating to their children? Inappropriate behaviour from strangers can be discussed and worked through with our children as wrong and unacceptable. Inappropriate behaviour from loved adult role models can be viewed as acceptable behaviour if we are not careful.

Parents and Friends

The Parents and Friends Committee at Trinity does an excellent job supporting school events and fundraising. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the 2017 Committee for their efforts, in particular our President, Kerryn Cerchiaro. Kerryn has been President for the last two years and should be justifiably proud of her efforts.

The unfortunate reality of the busy lifestyles we lead today is that we can become time poor and the ability of parents to commit to meetings outside of hours can be challenging. This, coupled with the changes that have been made regarding the governance of Parents and Friends Committees to adhere to the new financial regulations and Child Safety Standards, has forced us to address the way we operate. After discussion at both the Parents and Friends Committee and the School Education Board meetings we have decided to trial a new method of operating in 2018 for the Parents and Friends.

Trinity Catholic Primary School is committed to providing an education that develops the whole person.

We believe that the social, emotional, moral, spiritual and physical wellbeing of our students

is pivotal to student health, safety, learning and success.

Page 2: TRINITY CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER · Don’t forget to always check our “Events Calendar” in the newsletter each week for any additional events throughout the school

The first priority addressed when considering this change was that the students (and parents) do not miss out, and the same opportunities afforded to them in 2017 will remain in 2018. The difference will be that we are trying to reduce the load on parents and are not requiring parent meeting attendance anymore. The Office will now receive and receipt all money raised (this is a compliance requirement that the school has to meet).

Coordination of the activities will be through the school and will be asking for helpers at each event. At the commencement of 2018 a list of events and dates will be forwarded to families and we will ask parents to indicate which event they can offer their help at. It is essential that we receive parent assistance to be able to run the activities and events.

The current Parents and Friends Committee has agreed to be suspended for 12 months so that we can reconvene at the same time next year and review whether the trial has been successful or not. Again; I would like to highlight my thanks to the 2017 Parents and Friends Committee for their outstanding work and their agreeance to convene again in 2018 to be part of the new trial review.

Uniform

I remind parents that we have a great uniform here at Trinity and it is an expectation that it is worn correctly. Summer uniform has commenced now that it is Term 4 and we will be focussing on ensuring that it is worn correctly. A reminder that we have a No Hat No Play policy.

Grandparents Day.

Grandparents Day is approaching fast, Friday 10th November. This is one of the highlights of the year at Trinity. As part of the liturgy, we would like to put together a power point of images of the student’s grandparents (or special friends) and would love every family to be represented. If you have not yet forwarded any photos of your children with their grandparents, or just of their grandparents / special friends, could you please email them to [email protected] asap.

Free Dress Day

This Friday, October the 27th, is a Free Dress Day. We ask that the students contribute a gold coin donation to wear free dress which will be used to raise money for the Catholic Mission and Cancer Council.

2018 Planning

If your family situation is changing, we would appreciate you letting the Office know. An accurate indication of student numbers assists us enormously. We have a waiting list and if we know you are leaving we can offer your child’s spot to another family.

School Closure Day

Please be aware that the Monday of Cup Weekend, November the 6th, is a School Closure Day. The staff are using this time for report writing.

The Victorian Curriculum Water Safety Certificate and Trinity Swimming Program

Swimming and Water Safety is a key component of The Victorian Curriculum Health and Physical Education learning outcomes. The Water Safety Certificate is a Victorian Government initiative that reflects the level of competency recommended by the swimming and water safety industry for primary school students. The Water Safety Certificate is designed to develop students’ knowledge and skills to enable them to safely enjoy water based activities in calm and shallow aquatic environments. The competencies focus on water safety, knowledge, rescue skills, survival sequences and the ability to swim a continuous distance.

The table below lists the level, lesson focus, venue and dates for swimming in Term 4.

At the conclusion of the Swimming Program, each student will be issued with a certificate outlining the skills they competently demonstrated. This will be placed into their portfolio at the end of term.

29thSunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 22:15-21

Reflection:

In Sunday’s Gospel Jesus reminds us that God must be first in our hearts, and that our whole

life must be directed toward him.

Possible discussion: Who are the people who planned to trick Jesus? What did the Pharisees say to Jesus? What did Jesus say to them? Jesus says that we can serve God and serve our country at the same time. We can be good Australians by respecting others. How do we show respect for all people? How can we serve God by being a good Australian?

TRINITY CAR PARK ETIQUETTE For greater safety and visibility, we are requesting that all

drivers reverse park into the marked bays.

Thank you all who use the pedestrian crossing area. You are demonstrating to your children correct road safety practices. Once children cross the pedestrian crossing into the parking area, they, for their safety, need to be placed into vehicles promptly. The car park is NOT a meeting area.

The lane around the edge of the car park (closest to the oval) are for vehicles waiting to pick children up from the Pick-up Zone ONLY.

The two parking bays closest to the office path are the PICK-UP ZONES. These are NO STANDING zones. I f your children are not ready to get into your car as you pull up to the pick-up zone, you must continue on and rejoin the end of the pick-up queue.

There is NO RIGHT TURN when exiting the car park. All vehicles must turn left for the safety of others and to maintain traffic flow.

THE GATES CLOSE AT 9.00am AND RE-OPEN AT 3.00pm. Occasionally they might re-open slightly later due to school activities.

The Staff Car Park is for STAFF PARKING ONLY. Please do not use as a drop off/pick up for students.

Thank you for your patience and consideration of others.
