The Gathering of the Community

Cel. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

All And also with you.

Cel. Almighty God,

All To you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Cel. Glory to God in the highest,

All And peace to his people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Collect Of The Day

Cel. Let us pray.

Almighty God, you have built your Church on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone. Join us together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may become a holy temple, acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Proclamation of the Word

The 1st Reading: Deut. 8:6-11

The first reading is written in the eighth chapter of Deuteronomy, beginning at the sixth verse.

Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him. 7 For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills; 8 a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; 9 a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.

10 When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. 11 Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.

Reader This is the word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

The Psalm: Psalm 92:1-4

Lr. It is good to praise the Lord and make music to your name, O Most High,

All proclaiming your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night,

Lr. to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp.

All For you make me glad by your deeds, Lord; I sing for joy at what your hands have done.

Lr. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

All As it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be forever; world without end. Amen.

The 2nd Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:4-8

The second reading is written in the first chapter of First Corinthians, beginning at the fourth verse.

I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. 5 For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge— 6 God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you. 7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. 8 He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Reader This is the word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn

#199 - Fairest Lord Jesus

1. Fairest Lord Jesus, Lord of all creation, Jesus of God and man the Son, You will I cherish, You will I honor, You are my soul's delight, and crown.

2. Fair are the rivers, meadows and forests. Clothed in the fresh green robes of spring: Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer He makes the saddest heart to sing.

3. Fair is the sunrise, Starlight and moonlight, Spreading their glory across the sky Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines clearer Than all the Heavenly host on high.

4. All fairest beauty, Heavenly and earthly! Jesus, my Lord, in you I see, None can be nearer, fairer or dearer,

Page 5: Trinity 18

Than you, my Saviour, are to me.

The Gospel: Mark 12:28-37

Cel. The Lord be with you.

All And also with you.

Cel. The Holy Gospel of our lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.

All Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 And the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that he is one, and there is no other besides him. 33 And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And after that no one dared to ask him any more questions.35 And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 36 David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.”’ 37 David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly.

Cel. The Gospel of Christ.

All Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Sermon

The Nicene Creed

Cel. Let us confess our faith, as we say,

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Fulfil now our desires and petitions, as may be best for us, granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come eternal life; for you, Father, are good and loving, and we glorify you through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, in the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Confession and Absolution

Page 7: Trinity 18

Lr. Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; he welcomes sinners and invites them to his table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God’s forgiveness.

Most merciful God,

All We confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Cel. Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Peace

Cel. The peace of the Lord be always with you.

All And also with you.

The Celebration of the Eucharist

Offertory Hymn

#152 - What Offering Shall We Give

1. What offering shall we give Or what atonement bring To God by whom alone we live, High Heaven’s eternal king?

2. For all the blood of beasts On Jewish alters slain Could never give the conscience peace Or wash away its stain:

3. But Christ, the Heavenly Lamb, Takes all our sins away – A sacrifice of nobler name And richer blood that they.

4. In faith I lay my hand Upon His head divine While as a penitent I stand And there confess my sin.

5. So I look back to see The weight He chose to bear When hanging on the cross for me – Because my guilt was there.

6. Believing, we rejoice To know our sins forgiven; We bless the Lamb with heart and voice And join the praise of Heaven.

Prayer Over the Gifts

Cel. Let us pray.

God of truth, receive all we offer you this day. Make us worthy servants, strong to follow in the pattern of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Thanksgiving and Consecration

Cel. The Lord be with you.

All And also with you.

Cel. Lift up your hearts.

All We lift them to the Lord.

Cel. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Cel. It is indeed right to thank you and praise you, holy and gracious God, creator of all things, ruler of heaven and earth, sustainer of life, for you are the source of all goodness, rich in mercy and abounding in love; you are faithful to your people in every generation, and your word endures for ever.

Page 8: Trinity 18

Therefore with angels and archangels, with the fellowship of saints and the company of heaven, we glorify your holy name, evermore praising you and saying,

All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Cel. We praise you, merciful Father, not as we ought, but as we are able, because in your tender love you gave the world your only Son, in order that the world might be saved through him. He made you known by taking the form of a servant, healing the sick, liberating the oppressed, reaching out to the lost.

Betrayed, reviled, and nailed to the cross, he confronted the power of sin and disarmed it for ever. In his offering of himself, he became the perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Redeemed by Christ, we have been adopted as your children; by your pardon you have made us worthy to praise you.

On the night he was betrayed, Jesus, at supper with his friends, took bread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, gave it to them, and said, “Take and eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

In obedience to him and with grateful hearts we approach your holy table, remembering

our Saviour’s sacrifice, and rejoicing in his victory. Confident in his sovereign purpose, we declare our faith.

All we remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection,

we await his coming in glory;

Cel. Send your Holy Spirit on us that as we receive this bread and this cup we may partake of the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

May we be renewed in his risen life, filled with love, and strengthened in our will to serve others; and make of our lives, we pray, a pure and holy sacrifice, acceptable to you, knitting us together as one in your Son Jesus Christ, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, now and forever.

All Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Cel. And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

Cel. We break the bread of life, and that life is the light of the world.

All God here among us, light in the midst of us, bring us to light and life.

Page 9: Trinity 18

Cel. The gifts of God for the People of God.

All Thanks be to God.

Prayer After Communion

Cel. Let us pray.

Almighty God, may we who have been strengthened by this eucharist remain in your steadfast love, and show in our lives the saving mystery that we celebrate. This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

Cel. Glory to God,

All Whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

Madeleine Camche

Madeleine was a quiet, unassuming, kind, and active member of St. David’s Church.

In her working years she was an accountant with Fisheries and was a meticulous and gifted

mathematician. I hear that one could rest assured that every penny was accounted for. Her husband

Nick had a sporting goods store and Madeleine also helped in the store. Nick was active in the

Elks Club and Madeleine was always at his side, (perhaps as a chaperone.)

Madeleine immigrated here from England as a young child. Her mother ran a Boys’ School in

Cambridge while in England and was a no-nonsense Sunday school teacher at St. David’s. Mrs.

Hakkett did the sod turning for the new part (hall) of our church in 1979 or 1980. Madeleine was

the opposite to her mom in personality but followed in her mother’s faithfulness.

Madeleine could always be counted on to fulfill a role in the church when the need arose. She was the

church treasurer for some years, always an active member of the A.C.W., the envelope secretary for

many years and in charge of coffee hour every Sunday the last years that she was physically able to

attend.

The A.C.W. presented her with an honorary plaque. When I was a member of Vestry, we wanted

to nominate her for the Order of Saskatchewan for her continued faithful and dependable service,

but she didn’t want to have any public recognition.

Madeleine did not want to be a burden to anyone.

Many members of St. David’s parish family wish that they could be here today, but due to their

health and the precarious times they can not. Heaven will be their meeting place.

Madeleine, you will and have been missed.
