THE INTERIM RECTOR’S PERCH is undergoingrenovations! At their meeting in April, the Vestryvoted to reduce the hours of the Interim Rector

from full time to three quarter time beginning on July 1,because of financial constraints. They also voted to call ahalf time Rector for this parish going forward. We areawaiting word from the Canon for Mission Leadershipon what the next steps will be in the search process, having made this decision.

Taken at face value, this would seem to be a discouraging step. However, it hasbeen made in order to plan for a sustainable future for the parish. I believe that it willbe possible for Holy Trinity to continue as a vibrant congregation with an importantmissional presence on Main Street with some shifting of responsibilities and with ateam spirit.

It is true that the majority of my time as your clergy leader has been spent withadministrative, operational kinds of tasks rather than the preaching, teaching, andpastoral care for which a Seminary education is helpful. Some of that is due to myduties as your Priest in Charge to focus my time on things which needed fixing in theinterim. So, some reasons for that excess of administration have been remedied.Much time was devoted to serving on the Board of St. Luke’s Community Services, which—thanks to the revision of their by-laws, will no longer be a requirement for theRector of CHT. Because of a lot of hard work by our former Bookkeeper, CindyHursty, our current Bookkeeper, Cathy Golden, and our Treasurer, Pam Ferguson, theday to day financial affairs of the parish are now running smoothly with the appropri-ate transparency and controls, requiring little or no time from the Rector. ParishAdministrator, Valerie Hall, has been able to take on increasing responsibility and hasprovided stability by working Monday through Friday. All these things make it morepossible to cut back on clergy administrative hours.

In the months ahead, I will be working with the Vestry and other parish leader-ship to determine which tasks on my plate can be transferred to others or dropped inorder to conform to the 30-38 hour week expected of a ¾ time Priest. I think thebiggest challenge will be to keep up with pastoral care needs, since it has been difficultto find parishioners who feel called to be Eucharistic Visitors. Deacon Pat will stay on

for a while after your new half time Rector comes on board, but then will be reas-signed to another parish. There is no guarantee that Holy Trinity will be assignedanother Deacon.

In my remaining months with you I will be doing my best to help the parishmake this transition to fewer clergy hours. I will continue to work on systems for rou-tine administrative tasks which will allow them to be done efficiently and by others.

Holy Trinity is currently blessed with strong Vestry leadership. Your Vestrymembers are creative and talented. They work well together. They will serve as apowerful example to all your parishioners of how team spirit can invite the Holy Spiritto do its work of mission among and through you. Onward and upward.

Refugee Family NeedsDuring a recent visit to the home of our newest refugee family (a mother and herthree, soon-to-be four children) the following needs were identified.

The Episcopal Churches of New England, the New England Synod ofthe ELCA, and Kairos Earth, in partnership with local, statewide, andregional organizations along the Connecticut River, have organized thefirst-ever pilgrimage along the length of the river. A core group of“river pilgrims” will journey the full length of the river, being joined

by “daily pilgrims” as they traverse individual stretches/commu-nities, and by “pilgrims in prayer” for those who aren’t able to

paddle along or join in events but want to participate in the 40-day spiritual practices that correspond with the Pilgrimage dates.

The pilgrimage begins on May 31, 2017 and ends July 9. It is foranyone who would like to engage in a sacred relationship with the

natural world, especially with water and the Connecticut River. This journey, like anytrue pilgrimage, is intended to be a doorway to interior transformation and lastingchange. The daily prayer and spiritual exercises of the pilgrimage, as well as the land-based gatherings, will be held in the context of the Christian tradition. Contemplative Prayer Group

THROUGHOUT the year several parishioners have expressed the desire to form aprayer group, with emphasis on contemplative prayer. For anyone interest in

pursuing this, or for those not familiar with the contemplative aspect of prayerour Benedictine parishioner, Brother Thomas would like to hear from you.

Similar to Centering Prayer, the method to be used here at Holy Trinity wouldnot require a set formula (such as repeating a holy word or phrase -- often called amantra in the Eastern mystical tradition). Rather the emphasis would be simply onbeing quiet in order to experience the “still, small voice of God.” A few words fromScripture could serve as a starter prior to a time of quiet (15-20 minutes).

Finding a time or a place for quiet is not easy, especially in today’s noisy world. But being together with others in a quiet place, and allowing the Holy Spirit to enterour “space” we can travel the road towards peace and harmony. Our Interim Rector,Dana, has suggeted a suitable place for us to meet before or after a Sunday service.

If interested, see Brother Thomas at church or send him a message: [email protected]

In the merry month of May. . .did you know there is a day set aside for laughter?

World Laughter Day takes place on thefirst Sunday of May of every year. Thefirst celebration was on January 10, 1998,in Mumbai, India, and was arranged byDr. Madan Kataria, founder of the world-wide Laughter Yoga movement.

“Laughter is a positive and powerfulemotion that has all the ingredients re-quired for individuals to change them-selves and to change the world in apeaceful and positive way.”

10 TRINITY TRUMPET / MAY 2017

Do your vacation plans for this summer include a visit to a national park or monu-ment? That’s good, because the opportunity to visit such incredibly beautiful

wonders of our country may be disappearing after 2017. The following excerpt is froma recent issue of EcoWatch, written by the Center for Biological Diversity:

“President Trump is poised to threaten more than 1 billion acres of nationalmonument protection in a devastating and unprecedented attack on America's publiclands and ocean waters off the shores of the U.S.

“Trump signed an executive order April 26 calling for a review of every nationalmonument that's been protected by presidential proclamation since 1996. His goal isto turn these natural and cultural wonders over to special interests, including miningand logging industries. Trump reportedly has the stunning Bears Ears and GrandStaircase-Escalante national monuments in Utah at the top of his hit list.

"This is a frightening step toward dismantling the protection of some of Amer-ica's most important and iconic places: our national parks and monuments," saidKierán Suckling, executive director of the Center for Biological Diversity. "Trump'stapping into the right-wing, anti-public-lands zealotry that will take us down a very dan-gerous path—a place where Americans no longer have control over public lands andcorporations are left to mine, frack, clear-cut and bulldoze them into oblivion. It startswith Bears Ears and Grand Staircase and only gets worse from there."

“More than 50 national monuments are at risk, including vast marine areas inthe Pacific and Caribbean. Congress gave the president the authority to designate na-tional monuments on federally owned land under the Antiquities Act of 1906 for theexpress purpose of protecting important objects of historic and scientific importance.

"‘President Trump is clearly doing the bidding of the Utah congressional delega-tion, who are without question the most aggressive federal lawmakers seeking to seize, dismantle and privatize America's public lands,’ Suckling added.”

“National monument designations have protected some of the most iconic placesin the country. Dozens of the nation's most treasured national parks were first pro-

tected as monuments, including Grand Teton,Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Acadia and Olympic national parks.

"’With this review, Trump is declaring war onAmerica's public lands, Suckling said. "The presi-dent is satiating the greed of industry and blatantlydismissing the wishes of the vast majority of Ameri-cans, who overwhelmingly want to see these areasprotected for future generations."

“The monuments under attack are cherished byAmericans for their natural beauty as well as theirhuge cultural significance. Congress gave the presi-dent authority to designate national monuments onfederally owned land under the Antiquities Act of1906 to protect significant natural, cultural or scien-tific features. No president has ever attempted towithdraw a monument named by a predecessor.”

With Representative Ryan Zinke having beenconfirmed as Secretary of the Department of the In-terior, environmental groups such as Earthjustice will be working to push Zinke tohonor the mission of his Department: protect and manages the Nation's natural re-sources and cultural heritage; provides scientific and other information about thoseresources; and honors its trust responsibilities or special commitments to American In-dians, Alaska Natives, and affiliated island communities.

On April 19, 2017, Secretary Zinke announced that $34.billion -- a $2.9 billion in-crease from 2015 -- had been added to the U.S. economy in 2016 due to the NationalPark visitation. Visitor spending in 2016 supported 318,000 jobs, provided $12.0 bil-lion in labor income, $19.9 billion in value added, and $34.9 billion in economic out-put to the U.S. economy.

If visitation to national parks and monuments has brought in so much moremoney to the U.S. Economy, how will President Trump’s executive order to “turnthese natural and cultural wonders over to special interests, including mining and logging industries,” affect the protection and enhancement of these parks, cultural and historical monuments? Americans who treasure our parks and monu-ments need to write about their concerns to their representatives in congress and to Secretary Zinke.
