About Trina Trina Isakson is founder and principal thinker at 27 Shift and leads research and strategy projects that challenge assumptions of how people contribute positively to society. She also teaches a variety of university courses on community development and nonprofit leadership and management.

Trina is a sought out thought leader in volunteer and employee engagement, community-university engagement, inter-generational dynamics, women and leadership, introverts, and innovations in nonprofit sector governance and leadership.

“I had no doubt that Trina's presentation was going to be amazing. Knowing her previous work, community involvement and commitment to social change assured me that her contribution was going to be fabulous. But, as always, she surpassed my expectations. It was incredible to see how she was able to connect with our [team], and, through her stories and personal experience, she created an environment full of energy, respect and reflectivity. I hope we'll be able to invite her again to continue inspiring [our team].”

Speaking Audience size: unlimited 45 min/20 min + Q&A: $2000/$1200

FEATURED TALK

1. QUIET CHANGEMAKERS How do ‘introverted’ or ‘quiet’ leaders move important ideas forward? How do they ensure that their initiatives for social good succeed? Based on Trina’s work with the Quiet Changemaker Project, this talk examines at the less heard changemakers in our midst, and reveals how they work, how they succeed, and how they might be the leaders society needs.

Intended audience: nonprofit/community leadership; quiet people who work to improve society

2. VOLUNTEERS AND THE LEADERS THAT ENGAGE THEM So much leadership talk focuses on business and CEOs. But what about leadership of the people we don’t pay with money? This talk empowers community organizations to consider volunteer engagement as a form of leadership, and challenges these leaders to step outside the mould of traditional volunteer management.

Intended audience: nonprofit/community leadership; volunteer managers

3. BEYOND VOLUNTEERING AND DONATING: WHAT ARE THE NEXT FORMS OF GIVING BACK TO COMMUNITY? Much of the charity that individuals do revolves around volunteering and making donations. However, in today’s world the ways in which we can do good are expanding rapidly. In a hyper-social and digital world where people are making thoughtful decisions about their money and time, how are opportunities to do good changing? This talk explores these new forms of ‘charitable’ activities and challenges organizations to adapt to the changing interests of people doing good.

Intended audience: nonprofit/community leadership; volunteer managers; fundraisers

4. HOW MILLENNIALS ARE SHAPING THE FUTURE OF SOCIAL CHANGE Young people have different expectations of work, community, and social good. What will the future hold, and how can we tap into the passion Millennials have for doing good?

Intended audience: Young people and those that engage them (employers; nonprofit/community leadership)

5. WHAT THE NONPROFIT SECTOR CAN LEARN FROM START-UP CULTURE Start-ups operate within the context of limited funds, great uncertainty, and passionate people working hard to achieve big things. Sound familiar? This talk explores how the nonprofit sector and community organizations can move their missions forward with lessons from start-up culture.

Intended audience: nonprofit/community leadership

6. ENGAGING SUPPORTERS IN ALL AREAS AND LEVELS OF YOUR ORGANIZATION We are increasingly challenged to do more with less, but the number of people yearning to make meaningful contributions to our missions hasn’t gone down. How can we meet the needs of our organizations and of the people who want to support us? This talk explores how we can engage supporters beyond hands-on volunteer work and donor relations.

Intended audience: nonprofit/community leadership; volunteer managers; fundraisers

“It went off beautifully; she thoroughly informed and engaged the [participants].”

“I wanted to say that your talk today really inspired and motivated me. [It was] was enjoyable, encouraging, and it gave me a renewed confidence in my decisions.”

7. GOVERNANCE AND LEADERSHIP IN SOCIALLY-JUST ORGANIZATIONS The goal of much of the nonprofit sector is social justice. But are we socially just in the way we manage our organizations? The talk encourages nonprofit leadership to view their practices through a social justice lens, and challenges organizations to embed social justice as core to the way they operate.

Intended audience: nonprofit/community leadership; boards of directors

8. STRUCTURING HIGH-FUNCTIONING ORGANIZATIONS IN AN UNSTRUCTURED WORLD The hierarchical organization is proving less effective in an increasingly social and digital world. What alternative structures can help us do our best work in ever-changing times? This talk explores distributed leadership and ‘unstructure’ as a path to achieving our strategic goals and visions.

Intended audience: nonprofit/community leadership; boards of directors

9. INTROVERTED SUCCESS IN THE WORKPLACE The stereotypical workplace leader is outgoing and charismatic. People get ahead when they connect with others, talk about their progress, and are good ‘team players.’ What does this mean for the introverted worker and manage? This talk explores the quiet strengths of introverted people and how they can achieve success in career and workplace leadership.

Intended audience: introverted people; those that manage introverted staff members

10. PRODUCTIVITY TRICKS FROM A SEMI-RETIRED ENTREPRENEUR How can you get a day’s worth of work done in just a few hours? How can you get the little things done without losing sight of the important projects you want to move forward? This talk shares lessons from my life as a semi-retired entrepreneur and challenges people to rethink productivity, to-do lists, and work schedules.

Intended audience: people who want to work less and achieve more

11. CAREER PATHS AND UNPLANNING YOUR FUTURE When you ask people 20 years into their careers if they have a job they had planned to have at the time of graduation, most would say no. And laugh. In a world where many jobs we are training for don’t yet exist, and where job security is decreasing, how do young people plan their career paths? This talk highlights the benefits of following passions and taking off career plan blinders.

Intended audience: students; parents; career practitioners

FAQs Do you do offer discounts or do pro-bono speaking or workshops?

In very special circumstances I do pro-bono talks and workshops. I do not offer discounts, nor do I offer free individual coaching. When you contact me please be clear up front if you are seeking a pro-bono speaking or training session.

We only have a small team and can’t afford a full workshop. What can we do?

Let me know the workshop(s) or talk(s) you are interested in, and the number of seats/proportion of the fee you have budget for. When there is enough interest from multiple people/organizations, I’ll arrange a session for the larger group.

Are there any other fees or costs related to having you come in?

You are responsible for arranging the venue and a laptop/projector. Fees include all other costs (transportation/materials) for engagement within Metro Vancouver. For engagements outside of Metro Vancouver, you are responsible for transportation expenses and per diems to cover food plus travel time, charged at half my usual hourly fee ($120/hr x 50% = $60/hr).
