DP: Tell us a little about your company and your relation- ship with Duncan-Parnell. DK: Surveying Solutions, PC is a land surveying company based in Louisburg, NC. The company has been working with Duncan-Parnell (DP) for about 15 years, primarily with equipment rentals. DP: What were you looking for? DK: The growth of our company caused us to evaluate purchasing equipment rather than continue in conven- tional methods not feasible for our project sites. DP: What were your challenges? DK: Cost and capabilities of equipment. DP: What did you purchase? DK: We purchased a major competitor’s product from another dealer due to cost. It turned out to be a bad experience. The product did not work properly. We wanted to return the equipment but the provider would not accept it back. This experience caused us a lot of downtime and profitability. Our DP represen- tative, Rick Lusher, accepted the trade-in and helped us with the purchase of a Trimble R8 Series system. DP: Why did you buy it, and what are you using it for ? DK: We use the R8 to survey large scale sites. Trimble is the respected brand in the industry and the R8 has so many features and benefits. An added piece of mind is having the DP support available. Your guys know their stuff. The ability to call DP and have a knowledgeable person take care of equipment issues is priceless. DP: What are the product results, did it meet/exceed your expectations? DK: Yes! It does exactly as expected! The R8 is reliable and the DP service is dependable. DP: How has this product helped your business? DK: It has allowed us to keep our clients by giving us the ability to work alongside them as they move on to larger sites. DP: Has this product made your project a success, and has it reduced your cost ? DK: It has greatly increased our efficiency. There is zero downtime with the R8. We were losing 8 man hours a week with the competitive product. It is saving us twice the difference in equipment payments. It has increased billable by 15% due to no downtime with the equipment. Our initial decision to purchase based on price ended up costing us more money. We learned that quality equipment and available support outweighs cost. DP: How has this product minimized your risk? DK: The R8 works like it should, reducing our stress levels and increasing our confidence in the results. Pictured: a Trimble ® R8 Series GNSS Receiver continued on next page... Trimble R8 Field Experience – An Interview with a Former User of a Competitive BrandDwayne Kroeze RPLS of Surveying Solutions in Louisburg, NC recently sat down with Duncan-Parnell to talk about his switch from another major brand to Trimble equipment, and how this has made him more productive – and happier. DP: Tell us a little about your company and your relation-

This experience caused us a lot of downtime and profi tability. Our DP represen-tative, Rick Lusher, accepted the trade-in and helped us with the purchase of a Trimble R8 Series system.

DP: Why did you buy it, and what are you using it for? DK: We use the R8 to survey large scale sites. Trimble is

the respected brand in the industry and the R8 has so many features and benefi ts.

DK: It has allowed us to keep our clients by giving us

the ability to work alongside them as they move on to larger sites.

DP: Has this product made your project a success, and has it reduced your cost?

DK: It has greatly increased our effi ciency.

Starting with the November 2014 release of Trimble Positions Desktop add-in (TPDa), users can check-in/out data directly from a geodatabase inside of ArcMap. However, customers wishing to use this workfl ow would greatly benefi t from using the latest release of the Desktop add-in as there are numerous improvements. Here’s how it works: 1. Create an mxd containing layers from your

geodatabse that you wish to take out in the fi eld. Optimize the map for fi eld works: turn off extra fi elds, set symbology, and determine an appropriate scale or extent. Save the mxd.

2. Launch the TPDa Admin Window from the Trimble Positions toolbar.

3. Click the “Projects” button.

4. Next, click “Create.”

5. Select “Terrasync” for the Project Type.

6. If necessary, set the appropriate geographic transformation by clicking “Change.”

7. Then click “Start.”

8. Check the box next to the layers you wish to capture GNSS data with. This can always be added to later. Click “Next.”

9. If you wish to capture accuracy or elevation values, set them in the “Layer Settings” window by highlighting a layer and clicking the appropriate dropdown for those values. Click “Next.”

10. Take the defaults on the last page unless you wish to use a geoid model to capture MSL.

Read more about it here: http://positionsblog.trimble.com/?p=270 Click “Finish.”

11. Now your mxd will be highlighted in green as the active project.

12. Click on the mxd highlighted in green and then click “Edit.” This allows you several options to save the data dictionary (DDF), edit the DDF using Pathfi nder Offi ce, or update the DDF with your changes. For this exercise, we will “Save the DDF” as we will select some features to update in the fi eld.

13. Click “Next” 3 times and then click “Finish” since we have already described these settings in earlier steps.

14. Your project is almost ready for the fi eld. Select the features you wish to update in the fi eld. Click the TPDa dockable window button “Checkout SSF to Terrasync.”

15. Save the ssf fi le containing the selected features.

16. Copy the ssf fi le to your GPS device and you are ready for GNSS data collection with Terrasync.

17. After collecting/updating features with Terrasync, copy the data back over to your desktop.

18. Then click the “Check In SSF…” Now your fi eld session will be listed in the TPDa Dockable Window and the Status will be listed as “Waiting for Correction.” After post-processing the data, you can click “Update features” to seamlessly integrate the new GNSS data into your geodatabase.
