Alignment Expertise and Quantm History The Trimble Quantm Alignment Planning System is a unique route optimization technology and methodology supported by a team that incorporates road and rail engineers, GIS professionals, transportation researchers, mathematicians and system developers. The Quantm System was developed by the Australian Government's scientific agency CSIRO over ten years. It is the first technology and methodology (patent pending) to specifically address the complex task of route alignment selection. The technology provides essential support to project teams planning corridors and/or alignments for both road and rail projects. To commercialize the unique and innovative technology, Quantm Pty. Ltd was formed in 2000. In April of 2006, Trimble Navigation Limited acquired Quantm International Inc and its subsidiary Quantm Pty. Ltd., as a wholly-owned subsidiary to enhance the total solutions capability from prefeasibility through planning, design, construction and maintenance. In 2007, a joint venture, Quantm Qingzheng (Beijing) Technology Co. Ltd and a data processing center was established in Beijing, China. Trimble Quantm Alignment Planning Solution simultaneously manages all environmental, cultural and community issues involved in planning new Rail or Road Linear Infrastructure. In doing so, it substantially reduces the planning time and alignment construction cost. Using the service, a project planner can investigate literally millions of alternative alignments for any given set of constraints. The system enables a holistic approach that integrates all elements and delivers a range of alignment alternatives that best meet the relevant environmental, cultural, social, engineering and cost constraints. The resulting options can be analyzed quickly to address stakeholder concerns and maintain the momentum of the rail project. How It Works Trimble Quantm Alignment Planning Solution is offered in a cost-effective and secure client/server business model, with significant collaborative input from the Trimble team of road and rail engineers and Geographical Information System (GIS) technicians. The optimization workflow follows 6 easy steps: 1. Initial client set-up and training, 2. Data and database coordination, 3. Data input by project planner, 4. Alignment generation on the Quantm Pathfinder engine, 5. Return and review of 10-50 optimal alignment scenarios, and 6. Analysis and manipulation by the project planner. Resulting alignments can be easily exported to CAD and GIS software packages for either additional data input, preparation of presentation materials, or completion of design. The basic works flow is demonstrated below:

DESCRIPTION

Trimble Quantm Alignment Planning solutions support road and rail planners and engineers through the complex process of selecting and generating 3D corridors and alignments. Its unique route optimization technology generates millions of alternative alignments and returns a range of 10-50 of the best options for review by various stakeholders. The Trimble Quantm solutions enable planners and engineers to reduce project planning time, substantially lower alignment construction costs, and deliver improved alignments that meet environmental, heritage, urban constraints, and design standards set by each project. The Trimble Quantm system enables a holistic approach that integrates design standards, terrain, geological, and hydrological data, environmental areas, property ownership, and cost information in a simultaneous optimization process. This delivers a range of optimal alignment alternatives that can be analysed quickly to address project owner and stakeholder concerns and maintain the momentum of the project.

Ltd and a data processing center wasestablished in Beijing, China.Trimble Quantm Alignment Planning Solution simultaneously manages all environmental, cultural and communityissues involved in planning new Rail or Road Linear Infrastructure. In doing so, it substantially reduces theplanning time and alignment construction cost.Using the service, a project planner can investigate literally millions of alternative alignments for any given set ofconstraints. The system enables a holistic approach that integrates all elements and delivers a range ofalignment alternatives that best meet the relevant environmental, cultural, social, engineering and costconstraints. The resulting options can be analyzed quickly to address stakeholder concerns and maintain themomentum of the rail project. How It WorksTrimble Quantm Alignment Planning Solution is offered in a cost-effective and secure client/server businessmodel, with significant collaborative input from the Trimble team of road and rail engineers and GeographicalInformation System (GIS) technicians. The optimization workflow follows 6 easy steps:1. Initial client set-up and training,2. Data and database coordination,3. Data input by project planner,4. Alignment generation on the Quantm Pathfinder engine,5. The basic works flow is demonstrated below:

2. Steps 1, 2, 3 & 4 can be repeated over and over again as data and additional constraint become available. 3. The Trimble Quantm Alignment Planning Solution allows planners and engineers to collaborate with variousinfrastructure project stakeholders and deliver improved outcomes. The process maintains positive communityrelations, considers environmental impact, and reduces project construction costs - all while maintaining themomentum of the project.Improved Community RelationsCommunities globally are increasing the influence they have over where new railway or roads are created. Thecombination of community input and the need to avoid certain urban areas, cultural heritage zones and areas ofenvironmental sensitivity have made the planning process extremely complex. The Trimble Quantm Alignment Planning Solution allows community input to be integrated into the planningstudy. Community "no-go" constraints can be added in just minutes. Cost implications and alignment alternativescan be reviewed within 48 working hours.Better Environmental OutcomesThe National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) and the Transportation Research Board (TRB)Research Results Digest 304, describes eight technologies that can be used by transportation agencies toimprove the consideration of environmental concerns in transportation decisions.Reduced Project Planning Time and DelaysThe current industry approach to planning addresses each constraint issue in series, which often leads to conflictbetween the stakeholders and requires numerous subsequent impact studies. This can lead to a planning spiralthat delays, or even terminates, a project. The Trimble Quantm Alignment Planning Solution encourages cooperation between the project planners andstakeholders from the onset. Planners can quickly investigate alignment and cost implications of numerous whatif scenarios simultaneously. As a result, planners can demonstrate they have considered all feasible alignmentsand substantially improve the quality of the alignment without project delay or cost increase.Construction Cost SavingsThe Trimble Quantm Alignment Planning Solution delivers substantial alignment construction cost savings whilemeeting the defined environmental, community, heritage and most design constraints.Typical alignment construction cost savings, in undulating or rougher terrain, are in excess of 15% for highways, when compared to results determined using the previous industry best practice planning method.Reports and AuditsAs more governments require extensive impact studies and supporting documentation, the Trimble QuantmAlignment Planning Solution has become an essential tool for rail planners. From stakeholders and governments, through to environmental groups, community organizations, and project financiers, numerous groups want toknow that their concerns are being addressed when creating new roads. 4. Planners and engineers can use the Trimble Quantm Alignment Planning Solution to prepare in-depth impactstudies and public presentations. The software allows presentations to display the complete route or zoom-indemonstrating how an alignment impacts or avoids a particular zone or landowner, including the earthworksfootprint. The planner can also provide a process audit that tracks individual scenario investigation, consideration ofalternatives and costs, and document the methods used in reaching a preferred corridor or alignmentExample Below of a Scenario Input Reporthttp://www.trimble.com/alignment/
