Roofing Systems SustainabilityEnvironmental StrategyAlumasc actively pursues sustainability in the range of products and systems offered and is committed to continuous assessment of procedures and quality control standards that monitor them.

BREEAMAlumasc systems score highly in BREEAM ratings (notably in Section MAT5 for responsible sourcing of materials). They contribute to a very good generic rating in the BRE’s Green Guide to Specification, capable of an ‘A+’ rating when installed on timber or metal decks.

Recycled MaterialsInnovative production technologies enable the use of up to 30% recycled content in core waterproofing products, and our bituminous membrane systems are 100% recyclable.

Rainwater ManagementA valuable contribution to Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) is achieved through rainwater attenuation provision within green and blue roofs, along with clean recycled rainwater run-off from acrylic coated roofing membranes.

Green RoofsEnvironmental benefits derived from the use of green roofs include the reduction of the urban heat island effect, reduced levels of pollution, the provision of natural habitat for flora and fauna, and rainwater retention.

Carbon EmissionsCO2 emissions of buildings are minimised by the use of thermal insulation, reflective ‘cool roofs’ and CO2 neutralising membranes. This contributes to the reduction of the greenhouse effect and helps specifiers to meet target emission rates.

Whole Life CycleLong-term new build and overlay refurbishment waterproofing solutions, including systems which will last for the lifetime of the structure greatly reduce life-cycle costs, and minimise requirements for costly land-fill.

Quality ManagementAlumasc’s Quality Management System is independently audited to ISO 9001: 2008. Alumasc is also accredited to the ISO 14001: 2004 Environmental Management Standard.

KEY SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTSDERBIGUM - BITUMINOUS MEMBRANESEnvironmental Benefits: Advanced production techniques, in-service benefits and end-of-life recyclability combine to significantly reduce the ecological footprint of a building waterproofed with a Derbigum system.

Recyclable: All Derbigum bituminous membranes are 100% recyclable using the Macalusor® technique – a unique bitumen waste processor, recycling roofing off-cuts and bituminous waste. Derbibond NT cold-adhesive is supplied in polyethylene-lined drums which are uncontaminated after use and re-usable.

Recycled Content: Derbigum’s manufacturing technologies allow up to 25% recycled content in Derbigum NT Black and 30% in the Derbicoat NT underlay.

Derbigum Olivine Membrane - CO2 NeutralisingCO2 Neutralising Membrane: Derbigum Olivine is a high performance flat roofing membrane comprising APP-modified bitumen, composite reinforcement and natural olivine granule surfacing, which has an opaque olive-green appearance.

When rainwater comes into contact with olivine, an irreversible chemical reaction occurs. CO2 is neutralised permanently and the result creates a residue in the form of sand and magnesium carbonate, two products that are harmless to the environment. One square metre of Derbigum Olivine will neutralise approximately 1.75kg of CO2.

The Olivine membrane is ideal for use as a cap sheet in either a cold-applied single layer system, or torch-applied as a cap sheet in a traditional built-up roofing system, in both new build and refurbishment projects.

Derbigum MineralDerbigum Mineral is also available as an alternative with a standard mineral surface in either light grey or charcoal.

Derbipure Vegetal Membrane - 100% Natural MaterialDerbipure is a unique vegetal waterproofing membrane with a base of organic raw material, composed of vegetable oils and pine resin,

it is completely bitumen-free. A white acrylic coating offers maximum reflectivity whilst glass and polyester reinforcement ensures excellent resistance to puncture and UV degradation.

The Derbipure built-up warm roof is the ideal ecological solution for the roofing of new build projects, and its reflective coating brings the additional benefit of passive cooling to the building during hot weather.

Derbipure is assessed to the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Product Standard which is a continual improvement process that looks at a product through five quality categories – material health, material reutilisation, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship, and social fairness.

Cool Roofs: The reflective coating of Derbipure greatly reduces surface temperatures by reflecting up to 81% of sunlight, thereby lowering air-conditioning requirements and reducing CO2 emissions by passive cooling of the building. Photovoltaic panels on cool roofs are up to 2% more efficient due to the lower ambient temperature.

pH Neutral Rainwater Run-off: The acrylic coating of Derbipure ensures that rainwater run-off remains pH neutral and is suitable for recycling.

Maintain - affordable maintenance for long-term plant well-being.

Approvals Blackdown green roofs comply with the UK’s GRO Green Roof Code of Best Practice 2014 and the German Landscaping and Landscape Development Research Facility (FLL) Guidelines.

Benefits of a Green RoofUrban Heat Island Effect: Temperatures are known to be higher in urban areas relative to surrounding rural areas, due to the higher quantity of impermeable, reflective surfaces and increased population density.

Green roofs reverse this effect by returning moisture to the environment through evapotranspiration, reducing solar gain and improving air quality.

Stormwater Management: There is an increased need in the UK for Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS). The Flood and Water Management Act 2010 and recent increased flooding drives designers to consider and provide solutions to reduce the effect of construction on existing drainage systems.

Green roofs are recognised as a measure that can be used to provide a level of additional SUDS capacity.

Carbon Capture: CO2 capture is one of the primary legislative drivers for including a green roof on a building. As vegetation consumes carbon during photosynthesis, green roofs positively remove emissions, helping arrest climate change. Air pollution levels are also reduced by the green roof’s ability to trap harmful particulates and capture gases.

Habitat Provision: Green roofs can provide food, habitat, nesting opportunities or resting places for creatures displaced by urban development, such as spiders, beetles, butterflies, birds and other invertebrates. Replacing lost habitat or creating areas of bio-diversity, potentially aids planning applications or helps contribute towards BREEAM.

Planting Options:Planting is all about the cultivation of plants which are wind, frost and drought resistant, require very little maintenance and are self-propagating. This type of vegetation will consist primarily of sedums, but can include herbaceous plants and grasses if the substrate depth and location are suitable.

Intensive: Hard and Soft Landscaping: Intensive green roof systems are often a mixture of hard and soft elements; this may include a variety of planting types, from semi-mature trees, lawns, shrubs and herbaceous borders to vegetable beds.

Semi-Intensive: Wildflower Mat, plugs or seed. As the depth of the substrate is typically 150-200mm on a semi-intensive system, the range of plants that can be utilised on the roof includes a variety of wild flowers, sedum, herbs, grasses and alpines in the form of mat, plugs, seeds and bulbs. A 40mm drainage layer is used to help increase and retain additional moisture for the plants. Semi-intensive green roofs can offer a more natural look to a planted roof. As with extensive green roofs, a semi-intensive green roof is not designed to be trafficked or to have a permanent irrigation system.

Bio-Diverse: Natural Habitat: Randomly graduated substrate, from 80-200mm, interspersed variably with shelter stones, aggregate piles, shallow pools and logs in conjunction with specialist seed mixes replicates specific habitats. The objective is to attract specific wildlife species, in accordance with the project’s bio-diversity plan.

Sedum NatureMat®: NatureMat® is a composite vegetated mat consisting of a biodegradable base layer, a specially formulated substrate layer and a 90% mature plant cover comprising 6 core and 13 randomly sown species (predominantly sedums), grown to maturity in Blackdown’s fields in Somerset.

Extensive Sedum Plug: A diverse selection of over 25 species of hardy succulent plug plants, supported by a minimum of 70mm of Blackdown’s extensive substrate and 25mm drainage layer, provides attractive plant cover with a range of colours, shapes, heights and flowering times and periods. A variety of wild flowers, herbs, grasses, alpines and bulbs can equally be incorporated; varying the substrate depth to suit (70-150mm).

Extensive Sedum Hydro-plant: A mix of sedum cuttings, seeds, tackifier and fertiliser are applied through hydroplanting, onto the prepared Blackdown substrate and drainage layer. The plant cover will establish and grow (typically over 1 to 2 growing seasons) to deliver the long-term benefits of a green roof. Particularly suited to restricted budgets and large roof areas.

HYDROTECH STRUCTURAL WATERPROOFING - 30% RECYCLED CONTENTHydrotech MM6125 contains up to 30% post consumer recycled material in the form of rubber crumb from tyres, and oil. Hydrotech hot melt structural waterproofing system components are procured and developed under Alumasc’s responsible sourcing policy for raw materials.

Manufacture: Hydrotech MM6125 hot melt roofing and structural waterproofing is manufactured utilising hydro-electric power as a primary energy source, and manufacturing procedures are independently audited to the ISO9001 Quality Management System. Importing materials under Alumasc’s ISO14001 Environmental Management System ensures that upstream production processes are monitored for their environmental impact, and that due consideration is taken for all aspects of packaging, transport and disposal, in order to deliver as sustainable a construction product as practicable.

BREEAM Credits: Hydrotech MM6125, in common with all waterproofing laid on in-situ reinforced concrete currently carries a generic ‘C’ to ‘E’ summary rating in the Green Guide to Specification.

This is due almost entirely to the concrete deck which, although being a material with very low embodied energy, needs to be used in high mass in roofing and podium structures. The use of less dense forms of construction such a hollow pre-cast concrete with structural topping or waffle slabs and recycled aggregates can achieve the better ratings.

CO2 blown insulations used as part of the Hydrotech system have Zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and a Global warming Potential (GWP) of less than 5. This will contribute maximum credit as part of a BREEAM assessment. Further BREEAM credits would also be available for the use of responsibly sourced Hydrotech material and for its use as part of a green roof construction. Hydrotech 6125 also attains certified status for its high level of recycled content under the North American Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system.

Ecological information: Subsequent to manufacture, Hydrotech is a stable product which performs well when assessed from cradle to grave for effects on water quality (eutrophication) and water and ground contamination (ecotoxicity).

KEY SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTSBLUROOF - SUSTAINABLE STORMWATER MANAGEMENTWhy a Blue Roof? The recent increased frequency and severity of flooding in the UK has served to highlight the need to complement conventional drainage systems with a range of sustainable measures that can provide additional drainage capacity.

Alumasc’s BluRoof system is designed to alleviate flood risk by reducing and controlling the peak rate of discharge in compliance with design requirements; facilitating the detention of stormwater, up to a prescribed maximum hydraulic head, for subsequent discharge over an elongated period of time.

Blue roofs are a relatively inexpensive option as, unlike most other Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) tools, they occupy otherwise-redundant roof space without extending beyond the building’s footprint into scarce and expensive urban ground space.

The Alumasc BluRoof system has various key features, providing an engineered solution tailored to individual project requirements.

BluRoof high performance roofing solutions provide the requisite waterproofing integrity, and are used in conjunction with Alumasc’s Harmer BluRoof outlets. These control the maximum permissible discharge of stormwater by the inclusion of a restriction device that is removable for maintenance and adaptable to future climate change.
