Tricky opening bottle puzzle

This puzzle is my original design. There are tricky opening boxes, secret opening boxes etc. I call this puzzle tricky opening bottle. All bottle puzzles are in reality disentanglement puzzles with rope. This puzzle is different. At the back side of the puzzle there is a wooden lock mechanism. The mechanism is not very complex or ingenious. A simple mechanism. Easy to use for making puzzle boxes. Later, I like make a puzzle box with same mechanism.

The mechanism has ten sliding wooden keys. Each key may be at left side or at right side. For opening the bottle you must arrange all keys in correct position. The possibility is 1/1024.

And an other interesting side of this puzzle (for me) that ten wooden keys are removable. After opening the bottle you can arrange wooden keys and you can change the combination as you like.

This puzzle (relatively to other bottle puzzles) is very small. Making this puzzle is not difficult. But require some model maker tools instead of woodworker

equipment.

How to make tricky opening bottle puzzle

This puzzle has four main section1. Wooden keys2. Frame3. Base4. Slider

I started to make this puzzle by making wooden keys. After frame, base and slider.

For material I advise to use hard woods like beech or mahogany etc.

Making wooden keys

There are 10 keys. Some of them are left hand and some of them are right hand. Left hand keys are in open position when they are pushed to the left and right hand keys are in open position when they are pushed to the right

I made 4 right hand and 6 left hand key. You can make 5+5 or any combination that you like.

Each square is 5 mm and you can make them as burr puzzle piecesTotal dimension of each key 10 x 10 x 70 mm

Making the frame

Prepare the material given by the material list. Make a grove 5x5x20 mm to the middle of the “frame top” pieces.

When making assembly I used small paper pieces for giving necessary clearances.

Don't glue upper slider fixer and lover slider fixer until you finish all puzzle and see that everything works.

Making the slider

Wooden pins are cut to 10 mm length. Drill holes 3mm diameter and 6 mm depth. After fixing wooden pins, you will have 4 mm length wooden pins. Distance between pin centers is 10 mm and very precise.

A modification for this puzzle is possible. You can make some keys open in center position. . This is also an endless story. If you make keys enough long it's possible to make keys with four, five etc.. different position
