WELCOME!ThanksforbeingapartofHarcum’sCentennialcelebration.ForthoseofyouwhoareunfamiliarwithHarcum’sstory,it’satrulyfascinatingone.Fromitshumbleroots,theCollegehassurvivedandthrived,notbyvirtueofitssize,resourcesorendowment(allofwhicharemeagerbyanystandard),butratherbecauseofitsabilitytochangeandadapt.TheCollege
hasreinventeditselfanumberoftimesoveritshistoryandwillundoubtedlybechallengedtodosointhefuture.Thisprocessofchangecouldnothavehappenedwithoutthevision,commitmentand,inmanycases,sacrificesofmanyindividuals–faculty,staffandtrustees. TodayHarcumrepresentsavibrantcommunitythatisprovidingeducationalopportunitiestomanywhowouldnototherwisehavehadthoseopportunities.AtthesametimeHarcumprovidesemployerswithindividualswiththeskillsneededinsomanydisciplines,especiallythoseinthealliedhealthsciences.Whilemanyofourstudentsgodirectlyintotheworkforce,asignificantnumbergoontocompletetheirbachelor’sdegrees,manythroughourarticulationagreementswith14highly-respecteduniversities. EDITHHATCHERHARCUMANDHARCUMCOLLEGEEdithHatcherHarcum,atalentedconcertpianist,decidedfollowingthebirthofherfirstchildthattheconcertcareerdidnotofferachanceforfamilystability.Instead,shechoseaventurethatwouldcombinehertalentsasaneducatorandartistandherhusbandOctavius’businessvisionandability. TheHarcumPostGraduateSchoolopenedonOctober1,1915,inMelvilleHallinBrynMawr,whichwashometotheHarcumfamilyaswellastheSchool’sacademicbuilding.Harcumgrewsteadilythroughthe1930sand1940swithastudentenrollmentof185in1948.Mrs.Harcum’sindividualizedapproachplacedtheacademicfocusontheneedsofeachstudent. EdithHarcum’svisionfortheCollegecontinuestoempowergenerationsofstudentsbypreparingthemfordignified,remunerative,sociallyusefulwork.

CENTENNIAL LECTURE SERIESAnambitiousspeakers’serieswasslatedforHarcum’s100th,addressingissuesthattheCollegecommunityandthewidercommunityneedstoconsiderintothenext100years:sustainablebusinesspractices,ethicalfooduse,diversityandinclusion,healing,eco-friendlydesignpractices,andmoneymanagement.Alleventswerefreeandopentothepublicandeachguestreceivedasiliconewristband.

Y President Philip Klein was a Philadelphia civic and business leader and radio personality. He led the acquisition of Harcum by The Junto, a nonprofit educational corporation in 1952, and Harcum Junior College reopened in 1953 with Philip Klein as third president. Under Philip Klein’s aegis, Harcum became the first junior college in the state authorized to grant Associate of Arts and Associate of Sciences degrees. From that point onward to today, Philip and the Klein family have and continue to provide leadership and support to Harcum.
