Triangulation with the Disto Using 2 Points

Let’s look at a situation where we would like to determine the width (ft) of the front side of a house.

Let’s call it “X”

To determine “X,” we will use the “2-point Triangulation” method; also referred to as the “2-point Indirect Measurement” method.

First, we call this a “2-point” measurement because it involves measuring to 2 distinct points.

Turn the Disto on

Turn the Disto on … and press …

Turn the Disto on … and press … to enter the 2-point mode.

Notice the blinking line.

Notice the blinking line. The Disto is now ready for the 1st measurement.

Now, step back from the house ….

Now, step back from the house …. to a distance that will allow you to clearly see both corners of the front side of the house ….

And … move to the RIGHT edge of the house.

The goal is to create a RIGHT ANGLE with the side of the house …..

AND …. be in a straight line with the right-most edge of the house

Point the Disto at the left-most edge and press the DIST key.

Notice the blinking line on the display.

The Disto is now ready for the 2nd measurement.

Point the Disto at the right-most edge and press the DIST key.

Notice that the 2nd measurement appears on the screen.

AND … the resulting measurement for “X” appears on the main line of the display.

Important: Make sure the measurement on each edge is at the same relative position.

Important: Make sure the reference point stays in the same exact place.

The goal is to create a Right Triangle with the two measurements.

Keeping the measurements LEVEL …

AND … Keeping a solid, stationary REFERENCE POINT.

The 2-point triangulation (or indirect measurement) function is available on the Disto A5, Disto A6, Disto Plus and Trimble HD150 models.

The 2-point triangulation feature is available on older Disto models such as the Disto Classic and Disto Pro series models.

The procedures for using the triangulation feature with the older Disto models will differ slightly from the procedures provided in this demonstration.
