Well here it is at last, of sorts,Augusts Trials and Tribula-
tions. And it’s certainly lived up toit’s name though to be fair it’s notthe magazine but the hardware it’sproduced on that has been the trialand tribulation. The EFA/T&T lap-top died in the middle of finishingthe mag off and two days before Iwent on holiday. I’ve never had acomputer just give up the ghostbefore, no amount of probing, test-ing and changing of components byexperts could revive it. Luckily thehard drive is fine and as I write thisI have the laptop disembowelledwith it’s hard drive removed, placedin a docking station and connectedvia usb to my sons laptop so I canget at the work I’d done.
They don’t make ‘em like theyused to that’s for sure. Our ‘home’
laptop is getting on for 14 years oldand just about does what it’s askedto do which is not much more thanmedia storage now (and it’s practi-cally been superseded by a smartphone!) But it cost a much biggerchunk of the average wage at thetime and has worked out at nearly£85/year, money for value? Bettervalue than the one that’s justpacked up? Well that was only 4years old, but cost a much smallerchunk of money and has workedout at £90/year. Not much differ-ence (yes I know it’s a fiver Don,but that’s not a lot over a wholeyear) then when you factor in thatit’ll be sold off for recycling whichin turn spreads the value out intosociety, it probably works out bet-ter value for money. If only thesame could be said for motorcycles.

PEDRO’S PATTER
I think most will agree 'our' twosnappers Sarah Pateman &
Mick Brown provide us with somegood snaps for your albums, keepat it!
Going back a bit 15th June, Ithoroughly enjoyed the East An-glian Grand National ClassicScramble at Mark Tey. Several ofour members/friends gave ittheir best, Dave Godley alwaysthere in the first corners , a gater!, Richard Whreathall on the loneDot! Sam Appleton who doesn'tage and is always there or thereabouts! Andy Tym doesn't wastetime a gater plus, very impres-sive! 'The Boxford Flyer ' no notIan Preedy,!! Phil Evans whodoesn't 'do' trials very well butcomes alive when the tapes go up,someone buy him some 'dope'and stand back!! Luke FitzJohnwho's going better by the meetingnow he's settled for the 500! Ju-lian Smith would benefit withadvice from Andy on Stormer pep-ping! Greg Radley invariably hasthe situation sussed and gets upfront ASAP ! Jason Sigourney laidback Jason has to work hardkeeping the wheels in contactwith terra firma and in companywith 'driver' Darren are furtherup the fields this year good to see.Who did the winning? Paul Crudg-ington, not known to me ,but hestamped a authority on severalraces on two 500 unit BSA 's,
including the Grand National inwhich another consistently quickman James Newstead got leggedoff , fortunately minor personaldamage in view of pace they weregoing! Glenn Davey stylish onvery quick CZ 2nd , Gene Wom-ack doesn't take prisoners foughthard for third Ben Archer had tobe chuffed in fourth , very veryimpressive. In the clubman's'hole shot 'Tym was top dog welldone Andy! Aaron Graves andGlen Davey had great swoppingsessions in the upto 350 racingraces, John Bateup made the Pre-60 races his ahead of Greg whata tussle 250 against 650 ,'Big'Dave was in the mix as wasthe Goldie of Alex Baraona, shades of yesteryear which I con-sider myself fortunate to havebeen involved in. The chairsshort in numbers but they tryand are appreciated, can't under-stand why all chair disciplineshave receding entries, any ideas?
The Battlesbridge bike showprovided a window for grassersand scramblers . The 2nd Sum-mer series trial at Snaque pit pro-vided good sections for 30enthusiast many being newcom-ers to the scene and they had noreason but to be encouraged bythe results young Mr Weevers putit across fellow Greeves rider MrWeeb as he's known in France.
5
CofC Gary is warming up for an-other French sortie along withsupporters Tracey/Jim Woodma-son .'Mr Weeb' is waving the flagand riding newly refurberdGreeves .
Reflecting back to the trialKevin,Gary & Stephen were veryappreciative of assistance withsection plotting from BenWhreathall ,dad Bob and ChrisChapman ,the latter enjoyed hisFrancis Barnett ride losing hisonly mark 1st sect.1stlap ! MikeSmith is getting his worth out ofthe Investment Cub still beingseen off by the Investment Ariel ofDave's ,Greg still suffers with thattwitchy foot but still sticks withthe h/weight Greeves, he's youngthough isn't he! On the easyroute fast learner Mark Cornwellappeard to have a walk in thepark , after only 2-3 trials the bigzero well done young man! Hewas closely watched/pursued byDave Carter & Alan Miller. Nodoubt these competitive rivalrieswill be pursued on 9th Aug .atRaydon for third and final Sum-
mer Series trial, be there!! Observ-ers will be very very welcome!
What a shock the passing ofSuffolk's favourite son Dave Bick-ers as you would expect many ofhis on track adversies attendedhis funeral . His young grandchil-dren voiced emotional partings. Idon't think a man could could getmore out of life . Much much re-spected!
You'll be pleased to hear elPresidente Ian Preedy has been tothe farriers and been shod! Noseriously he recommends Ipswichhospital for tumour removals (askfor Sid)! And nurse Sylvia has hisrecovery well under way.
Keep making the most of sum-mer and reciprocate with attend-ance at the events your fellowclub members put on for YOU!Use them or lose them! Don't for-get use you mirrors!

The Death of Dave Bickers fol-lowing a stroke on the 6th of
July not only brought to an endthe life of an incredible man, butalso for me personally the end ofan era in which Dave not onlyinspired me in my youth but alsoin later years.I was lucky enough to rub shoul-ders with him again firstlythrough our involvement at aGoodwood Revival meeting andlaterally through Bob DrainsThursday trail bike rides and sub-sequent lunches at Andrews fieldwhich he often attended.
My first memory of Dave wasat a Chelmsford club scramble in1955. My father was working atthe Marconi “Bushy Hill” radarsite at Woodham Ferrers and hadnoticed a track being laid out onthe field below for an event thatweekend. This looked interesting,so Sunday saw him taking mymum and I out in our Morris Mi-nor back to Montpelier farm tosee what it was all about.
This was an entirely new expe-rience for me and I can still vivid-ly remember the sight and soundof the bikes as they flew from thestart down towards the mud hole
“en mass” leaving that uniquesmell of hot motorcycle’s, mudand oil in the air as the last riderchased after the pack. All toosoon the race leader came into
view, head down, chin jutting out,and a good three bikes length infront of the pack to start his sec-ond lap. “Come on Dave, go onBickers” the crowds shouted asthe slightly built rider in a khakijacket and white helmet flew by,his D.O.T. motorcycle buckingand weaving as he kept the throt-tle nailed hard for the next fivelaps to the chequered flag, shortlyfollowed by the commentator an-nouncing, The winner of the250cc final, Dave Bickers.
You could say that if ever Ihave had an epiphany in my lifethat was it!! You could keep yourStanley Mathews, Danny Blanch-flowers, and Denis Compton’s,from now on it had to be DaveBickers and motorbikes for me.
Mum and Dad got the bug tooand for the next decade or so theybecame avid scrambles fans aswell, attending meetings mostweekends with their scramblesmad offspring in tow, who couldmostly be found hanging aroundthe pits soaking up the atmos-phere, and wanting desperately tobe part of it.
I never did get to emulate my‘off road Hero’ though, parentalcontrol, lack of money and thediscovery of “girls “put paid tothat, probably just as well.
DAVE BICKERS 1938 - 2014

But a few years later a trip toBrands Hatch saw me, taking uproad racing, a sport I was to be-come heavily involved with overthe next 20 odd years as a riderand which I still have an involve-ment with to this day along withTrials.
Dave Bickers many achieve-ments over the years are exten-sively documented elsewhere forall to see but suffice to say any-thing that involved skill determi-nation and excitement on wheels,he excelled at.
Many will remember DaveBickers for all these things, andmany more, but for me I will re-member him, latterly as a friendand just a nice unassuming manwho it was my pleasure to haveknown, and an inspiration to usall.
Of such men heroes are made.
Rest in Peace Dave You will not be forgotten.
John R
'Our' man Greg Radley won the Robbie Allen memorial scramble on Sun-day 20th in Scotland, full report next month. It was rumoured he wasstaying over to participate in Commonwealth games, unconfirmed. Whata result !!Greg won the 250 on Greeves, 2nd overall!! Ok!
Hot off the Press (decidedly luke warm now, Ed.)

I,ve met quite a few well knownmotorcyclists in my time, some
were just normal blokes, some werefull of their own importance and afew, just a few, were like Dave. Just about the friendliest, likea-ble man you’re ever likely to meet, who was always ready to help, such as when I first met him. I,drun out of methanol for the KTT ata Woodbridge sprint and he,d got aspare can, he refused any payment, but I forced a few coppers on tohim. From then on it was always asif I,d known him forever. Then we would see him and acouple of friends turn up at the
Thursday club, they used to gowith Bob Drane and Co, on theirgreen lane and byway runs, andthen have lunch and a good natterand exchange of insults before mak-ing the not inconsiderable journeyback to Coddenham. Of course, other people willwrite about his exploits on thetracks and on film, but I and theThursday club knew the real man.
We have all lost a good mate.
Don
“DAVE”
This took place 28th June, anoth-er good turn out, 10 bikes, most
two up so almost a family outing. The starting venue was Hal-stead bus park. I had experienceda close encounter with the groundwhilst attending Bob and his merrymen Thursday club. So best laidplans were put aside and 'any col-our as long as it's black' was themode of transport. We set off in very agreeableweather this time taking more of ascenic route, Gosfield, Sible Hed-ingham, the lovely rural town Clarethen the B1063, Stradishall, Wick-hambrook (looking forward to acuppa by now) Lidgate and Dalhamwhere a welcome pub jumped outto meet us. After being suitablerefreshed we continued via the
B1085 crossing the A14 at Ford-ham where I got everyone lost. Af-ter asking directions we reachedWicken in a short while and parkedthe bikes at the base of the wind-mill which was in full sail. The fête was in full swing withthe dog show, various have a tryside shows, a cake stall and othervenues for fast food. Then it startedto drizzle (no problem.) Then'steady' rain. Then thunder andlightning and heavy rain. A sharpexit to the pub for a pie and a pint.Unfortunately the rain continued(big time) and the event became awash out. A very wet ride homespoilt a once again very pleasantday. Better weather next time? Pictures page 14
THE WINDMILL TOUR

I first met Dave sometime in themid 1950s when I first started
scrambling and like everyone elsewas amazed at the talent of thisfriendly likeable young man, whorode fearlessly around the localscramble courses. So good was hethat very few of us had any chanceof beating him to the chequeredflag. Especially when in early in1958 he appeared with a 500 ccBSA DBD34 Gold Star, which herode to victory many times duringthat year and at the end of thatscrambles season I was luckyenough to purchase the gold star inNovember of that same year. Someof his magic must have rubbed offon that bike because one or twowins came my way and much funwas had. We stayed in touch throughlocal scrambles and trials until theearly 1960’s when I left motorcy-cling (which I missed terribly) tohave a family. I still followed Dave's,now blossoming international, ca-
reer through the motorcycle pressand watched him rise to becomeEuropean champion. Many, many years later we metagain at Andrews field where I in-troduced myself to him again asthe lad who relieved him of thatDBD34 and he immediately remem-bered me and called me by my oldnick name “Nellie” thankfully afterthat he always addressed by myreal name Neil. From then on until his sad de-parture we had many friendlychats about times gone by, bikesand their problems, and otherthings in general, proving what anunaffected, friendly, one of the boys, gentleman he was.
He will be sadly missed by allwho knew him.
Rest in peace my friend,
Neil.
