What WE OffER:

After adopting Kevyn from the GCAS, we knew we needed help with hertraining. We did some research and conferred with our neighbors whohad very well behaved dogs. Shiloh K-9 worked with us and Kevyn tohelp her complete the in-board program, and we counldn’t be happier! We love taking Kevyn with us, she is truly a part of our family adven-tures. Adam, Valerie and their team are always available when we havequestions or need advice. Thanks Shiloh K-9! — Samantha Lindsey

of COMBINED EXPERIENCE

Josie was found as a stray along the highway. I agreed to foster

her for two weeks, that turned into two years. She had tons of en-

ergy and no manners with a mind of her own. I tried two training

programs with no luck, and in desperation called Adam. I am now

able to contral her, she is still a handfull by nature, but Shiloh K-9

has given me the ability to manage Josie. It was well worth every

penny spent, I can’t say enough about the program.

Special Feature Who would have imagined that from one individual’s concern about all

those dogs that are chained outdoors 24/7/365, Project BARK would turn

into one of the three major non-profit organizations in Greensboro providing

free spay/neuter services to those families with financial needs. From small

acorns mighty oaks grow.

In November of 2010 Libby Scandale, an art teacher at Ragsdale High

School in Jamestown, was walking her rescued terrier, Beasley, on a bitterly

cold night. She wondered about dogs chained outside without benefit of

a warm place to escape the cold. From that simple thought, grew Project

BARK (Bringing Animals Relief and Kindness). Project BARK placed their

first free dog house on December 4, 2010 in a snowstorm to a family in

High Point. Since that time they have placed over 340 shelters to animals in

need in both Greensboro and High Point.

With each shelter they placed and in talking to their owners, they learned

because of the economic situation,

there was no way they could afford

to have their dogs ‘fixed’. Knowing

about the huge population of un-

wanted animals and the grim outlook,

another idea was born.

With no fencing, dogs would get

out, dogs would get in and before you

knew it, there was another litter of

puppies. Where were most of these

puppies going? To the local animal

shelter which was already over populated and in due time they were eutha-

nized. It is reported that of all dogs and cats taken in at Triad Area Animal

Shelters 58% were euthanized in 2010. Volunteers wanted to do something

about it, even though their number one priority at that time was the place-

ment of shelters. They decided to raise money to fully pay for spaying/

neutering these animals.

Yard sales, restaurant fund raisers, special events, as well as on-line ad-

vertising helped, but much more is needed. This group also pays for rabies

vaccinations, flea treatment and post operative medication if prescribed.

This does not come cheap. The services are performed by a low cost clinic,

but still on average it will total between $80.00 and $100.00 without compli-

cations. Yes, they will pay for complications as well, if one arises. It’s hard

to say no at that time.

Contributions are coming, and through January of 2012 they have funded

18 animals. In February, 17 appointments have been made. When you

consider that on average a spay/neuter will eliminate an average of five

unwanted births, that’s 175 animals that will not have to be euthanized. It

also means a financial savings to the citizens of Guilford County whose tax

dollars support the Animal Shelter.

Project BARK needs everyone’s support in eliminating unwanted births

with hopes of eventually eliminating euthanization at all animal shelters.

This has been accomplished in other states. If you want to help, go to their

website to make a contribution to their spay/neuter fund, or if you’re inter-

ested in running a fund raiser, contact information is also available on-line

When someone recently

asked me what is Dogs

On The Catwalk exactly, I

simply started to respond

by saying that it is Red Dog Farm Animal

Rescue Network’s largest fundraiser of the

year. Then it hit me! It’s definitely not just a

fundraiser and truthfully, it’s an experience

that you can’t simply convey in just mere

words. I ended up going back and sharing a

video montage from last year’s event. While

watching the video clip I was overwhelmed

with a flood of emotions as I remembered

my experience and what it felt like being

there that night. You see, with Dogs On The

Catwalk, while it is our largest fundraiser, it

is really a night of reflection, celebration and

an even greater connection of people from all

ages and walks of life joining together for the

same goal and purpose.

Walking through the doors at Triad Stage

in downtown Greensboro, you are first

struck by the number of people in the lobby,

the lights and decorations galore. Then

you notice something… an enlarged photo

of an emaciated horse, and then another

photo showing a box of tiny puppies and

yet another of a sleeping cat and a baby

goat and you know that this is no ordinary

show. Yes, there is beer, wine and all sorts

of delicious heavy hors d’oeuvres. Spread

out in various niches you will find tables

overflowing with great silent auction items

and fabulous deals just waiting to be bid on.

The party atmosphere is upbeat, fun

and welcoming but there’s so much

more going on that your mind can’t

even begin to process it all. Talking

all around you are volunteers, people

who have adopted, are looking to

adopt, business owners that are

sharing their support and people just

coming for the first time wanting

to participate and have a good

time. You see someone smile at

you and overhear the conversations

swimming around the room. You

catch a story of an adoptee finding

their best friend, another of a foster

parent reuniting with a family

that adopted a dog they had once

helped to care for. Some stories are

of success, others of neglect and

even more of animals currently in

need. Stop for a second and you are

sure to have that empowering “feel

good” moment and maybe even find

out it’s really a small world after

all. How else can there be so many people

from our community willing to help make a

difference?

After an hour or so, the party slows and

ushers come to show you to your seat in the

main theater. It’s time for the main event.

Introductions are made, lights are dimmed, a

silence falls over the audience and the show

starts. A video is played, showing various

animals and a behind the scenes look into

Red Dog Farm. You learn of the difficulties

that the rescue faces each and every day. You

Cover Story

see some of the horrifying images of the

animals once frightened or neglected. Then

the good but sad news, these are the animals

that we were able to help.

The video ends and a spotlight comes on,

one of the emcees begins reading a story of

a sad situation: a lost dog found on the side

of the road, how he came to find his way

into Red Dog Farm, the pitiful shape he was

in and the medical care it took to make him

healthy again. You learn that this little fella

looked for his forever home for over 8 long

months. Then the magical part of his story

begins to unfold. One day last fall, his foster

Mom took him to one of our adoption events

and that was the day that this once sad and

lonely dog’s real life began. Yes, that was the

day that his forever family met him and it

was truly love at first sight on both accounts.

Several days later he was reunited with this

family as they took him home for the very

first time. Over the next days, weeks and

months this four-legged little guy found out

what it really means to be a dog. He went

on trips and vacations with his family. His

favorite toy became one of the kid’s old

stuffed animals, he enjoyed play dates with

the neighbor’s Labrador and he is loved by

all who meet him. The story concludes and

the curtain parts as the emcee welcomes this

alumni dog and his new family to the stage.

The handmade costumes are cheerful, fun

and hilarious. The song is one that makes you

want to sing and dance. So you sit up tall,

wipe away those tears and begin to laugh as

he takes the runway uncontrollably bouncing

and showing off his family. You think you

might be crazy because you can actually

see that this dog is smiling and he

wags his tail and makes his way off

stage.

The best part is that this is just

one story, the show has barely

begun, and there are thirty more

stories that will make you cry,

laugh, and applaud over and over.

After the alumni dogs have taken

to the runway the finale comes with

a few adoptable dogs appearing on

stage and you hear how their stories

are just waiting to take flight.

So what is Dogs On The Catwalk

exactly? It is a party, a celebration,

an experience and a story of people

helping those who can’t speak

up and help themselves. It is past

adopters coming back with their

beloved new additions and sharing

how happy these dogs have made

them and how all of their lives

have changed for the better. It is a

community taking a moment and

coming together to express their

unconditional love by paying it

forward to help the next generation

of unfortunate animals in need

get a second chance at a life well

deserved. Thanks to numerous

corporate sponsors for this event,

ALL proceeds and donations

raised will go directly to helping the

animals in our program.

Dogs On The Catwalk will be

held on Saturday, March 24th this year at

Triad Stage, 232 South Elm St., downtown

Greensboro.

Animal rescue & Foster ProgramPlease call to adopt us!

Jackie. When you first meet

this little girl you think she has never

ending energy. Then you get her home

and she is a couch potato. Jackie is our

precious little Terrier mix. She is very

sweet and needs a lap to call her own.

She loves to run and jump and romp

around but afterwards is content to rest

by your side for some nap time. Jackie

was found by two very nice ladies,

running loose on a busy street. How anyone could let this little girl

out of their site is unthinkable. She never meets a stranger and will

give you endless love. Jackie comes house trained, crate trained, and

is ready to give an abundance of love to her peeps. Her birthdate is

11/2/2009. Can you give Jackie the loving home she is looking for?

Call ARFP at 574-9600 if you are interested in adopting Jackie. n

Percy. Of all the names given to the

puppies in this litter of 8, Percy is the most

fitting! His name, derived from Persius,

means to penetrate the hedge. In old English

this meant he was a good hunter. Percy is

believed to be a Plott Hound Beagle mix.

They were bred to tree raccoons, bears or

cougars, anything that can climb. Percy has

a very outgoing personality. He loves to wrestle and play with his

sibling and is equally comfortable in your arms giving kisses. He

was the first puppy to come out of his crate, tail wagging, to meet his

foster family. Because Percy is a scent hound he needs a fenced yard

for his safety and an active family to keep him busy. Percy was born

11/29/11. He will be neutered and to date on all shots. If you would

like a loyal, loving, and active puppy, Percy is your ideal choice.

Call ARFP at 574-9600 if you are interested in adopting Percy. n

Cruz and 5 of his

siblings recently made

their way to ARFP

from Sandy Ridge,

NC. Cruz was born

on 11/29/11 and our

best guess is that he is

a Plott Hound Beagle

mix. He has settled

into his foster home

nicely and his foster

mom describes him

as a very easy puppy.

To meet Cruz, contact

ARFP today!

Call ARFP at 574-9600 if you are interested in adopting Cruz. n

Fender. Named after one of the

world’s finest guitars Fender is one of

the finest pups ever! The Fender Guitar

Co. was founded in 1946 while our

little Fender was born in 2010, around

April 1st. He’s a Baby Fender. Fender

was abandoned on a front door step of

a kind woman’s house and was rescued

by ARFP at 6 weeks old. He looks to be

a mix of Schnauzer/Westie/Terrier. Fender was adopted at 3 months of

age and recently was returned to ARFP, almost two years of age now,

because his family doesn’t have time for him any longer. Fender is

a free spirit that loves to be with his people. He is still very much a

puppy and loves a good playdate. If you’re looking for a dog to keep

you company, that loves music, Fender just might be your boy!

Call ARFP at 574-9600 if you are interested in adopting Fender. n

Eli. Our Eli is

named after NFL

quarterback Eli Man-

ning. Eli was born on

12/2/11 and is a Lab/

Bassett mix. While our

Eli doesn’t have two

Super Bowl rings, there

are plenty of things that

make him an MVP to

us! Eli is a happy play-

ful puppy that spends his days wrestling and playing tug of war with

his siblings. He is working on his house and crate training in his fos-

ter home. Eli is looking forward to what next year’s football season

brings; maybe he’ll be watching the games with his new family!

Call ARFP at 574-9600 if you are interested in adopting Eli. n

Kent loves other cats and would prefer a home with a feline

companion to play with. Kent will soon be approaching a birthday on

May 15th and is wishing for a forever home to celebrate being a two

year old! Can you make his wishes come true?

Call ARFP at 574-9600 to make Kent a happy birthday boy! n

Itchy Pets - Diagnosing and TreatingMy mature dog bites and licks his side, even though he is on medi-cation for fleas and ticks. What is going on?

Some animals lick and chew themselves, this can be a sign of com-pulsive behavior, but many times it is a sign of itching caused by allergies. If he/she is on medication for fleas, ticks and mites your dog could be suffering from allergies.

What are the signs of itching and allergies of the skin?

The most common signs of itching in pets are: licking, biting, scratching, rubbing, twitching the skin and agitation. Some pets may seem agitated, stop suddenly while walking to turn around, scratch, or whine as they are scratching. Scratching can lead to skin damage, bleeding, hair loss, scabs, causing secondary skin infections with bacteria or fungal organisms.

How is the cause of itching diagnosed?

Your veterinarian will probably do a complete check up, that may include: checking for parasites, culture testing to identify bacte-rial or fungal organisms, allergy testing and blood work to look for underlying medical issues that could affect the skin.

What can I, or my veterinarian do as far as treatment?

Several approaches may be employed, because there may be multiple contributing factors. For example, if a pet has an underly-ing allergy that is complicated by a flea infestation in addition to a bacterial or fungal infection, all of these may need to be addressed. Treatment can require a long-term commitment. Pets respond differ-ently to medications, your veterinarian may need to revise the treat-ment plan as therapy is progressing. Good communication with your veterinarian, especially if a treatment doesn’t seem to be helping, or if your pet seems to be responding negatively to that treatment is essential.

What types of products/treatments are available?

1.Topical products- These may be recommended if your pet has mild or localized itching, or as supportive therapy for more generalized conditions. Moisturizers, ointments and lotions may need to be applied frequently (sometimes several times daily) to help ease itching. 2. Shampoos - Medicated shampoos can be very helpful and may last for a few days. Some shampoos can be used along with a leave-on conditioner to extend the effects.

3. Medications - For many pets, corticosteroids (steroids) provide the best relief from itching. These products come with several options, such as liquids, pills or injections. However, corticosteroids have some side effects and not every pet is a candidate for this treatment. Antihistamines are another possible treatment. As usual, please talk this over with your veterinarian when choosing a treatment would be best for your pet.

4. Supplements - Supplements such as fatty acids and other nutri-tional supplements can help some pets with skin itching. Fish oils, vegetable oils and other combinations may be recommended, and effectiveness can vary. Ask your veterinarian if a nutritional supple-ment can help your pet.

Sometimes a combination of several treatments work best. As always, confer with you veterinarian to come up with the best way to handle your pet’s itching problems. For further infomation, go to www.healthypet.com.

When she is hungry, she’ll greet you with a long conversation!

Call 378-0878 if you are interested in adopting Zoe. n

Pearl is almost

gorgeous silver tabby

with striking green

eyes and the softest

fur. Pearl will run

up to you with her

be a little fussy when

she is put in a new

situation, but once she

settles in, she is a real

love-bug!

Alpha's

name suits him

perfectly. He

is definitely the

Alpha kitten

in his foster

home. This

handsome 8

very playful

and full of

himself. As you

can tell from

his photo, you couldn’t find a happier, sillier boy.

Call 378-0878 if you are interested in adopting Alpha. n

Coco is a 7 month old kitten that is a “blast” to have around.

She’s full of life and has plenty of love to give. She is so affection-

ate and loving, that it is hard to make her stay off of her foster fam-

ily’s laps. Coco has a cute habit of sitting up and pawing at the air,

like she is “catching” something.

Call 378-0878 if you are interested in adopting Coco. n

Mr. Peepers

has had a rough life.

First he had to have

eye surgery, then he

suffered from urinary

blockages and had

surgery for that condi-

tion. Now he is all

better and is ready for a

new home. He is a big,

affectionate 2 year-old

orange boy that craves

attention and love.

Call 378-0878 if you

are interested in adopt-

ing Mr. Peepers. n

Artemis

is Alpha’s sister

and she is the

most beautiful

color of solid

blue. Her coat

just shimmers.

Artemis is very

mature for her

age and very

well behaved.

She loves to play

but spends lots

of time watching her sibling rough house. She doesn’t want to mess

up her gorgeous fur we suppose.

old. As sweet as

can be, she loves

to be held and

will cuddle with

you all night

long. She is a very people-oriented girl, and certainly prefers her

human family over her kitty and canine brothers and sisters—a true

calico! A toy lover too---she will jump and play with her mice and

teasers until she is so tired that she begs to be held…are you looking

for a little girl to keep you cozy? Then, Chloe is your girl!

Tandori is a very silly

kitty with a big personal-

ity. She is a sweet and sassy

blue lynx- point Siamese

who loves neck scratches.

She gets up every morning

to help her foster mom with

her makeup, and prefers

playing with shoelaces to

feather toys. She has been through a lot in her short life, so she needs

someone who doesn’t mind spending a little extra time earning her

trust. She will reward you with her goofy antics and endless curiosity.

She gets along fine with other household pets once she gets to know

them, but so far prefers sharing her toys with boy Kitties. Spring is

the time for new life, and Tandori would love to start hers with you!

sleek Tuxedo

kitty who loves

to play. Her

acrobatics

will positively

astound you,

her toy mice. Because she keeps herself spotlessly clean, her fur

Cossack

is a big, burly

Russian Blue-

mix cat with

enormous feet

because he has

extra toes on

all four! De-

he is a gentle

giant, and

Sheena, origi-

nally a Hurricane Katrina

survivor, was adopted

and had a great life until

her owner had to move

and couldn’t keep her.

She loves to greet people

when they come to our

office and is an all-around

great kitty. Sheena gets

along well with other cats

and even dogs! She loves to be petted and enjoys just about any lap

that she is given. Sheena has an absolutely gorgeous coat and the

sweetest personality you will ever meet. If you are looking for a lap

kitty to lounge around with you, then Sheena is your dream girl!

You can apply for Sheena by visiting www.reddogfarm.com. n

Lucy came to Red Dog Farm after origi-

nally being adopted out as a puppy. However,

she grew much bigger than her adoptive mom

was able to handle and had to come back to Red

Dog Farm. Originally, we thought she was a

Dachshund mix and would stay smaller (under

15 lbs) but she is now full-grown at about 35 -

40 lbs. She is great with kids, dogs, and other

animals. Lucy would love a family that LOVES

to play as much as she does. Once inside, she

does know how to use her indoor manners and

snuggle up for a good movie. Lucy is house

broken and crate-trained and would probably enjoy hiking and greeting

local neighbors on a good ole’ fashion walk about the neighborhood.

If you are interested in adopting Lucy, please visit our website at

www.reddogfarm.com. n

Crumpet's Baby

Bunnies are just too precious

for words. When Crumpet, the

mother rabbit, was surrendered

to us we suspected that she was

pregnant and immediately had

her examined by our veterinarian.

We were told she was in fact very

pregnant and was due any moment. Thankfully Crumpet did just

fine and had five healthy babies. The babies: Bagel, Danish, Quiche,

Waffles and Sticky Buns, will be weaned and available for adoption

at the end of March. While rabbits can make great pets for kids, they

require adult supervision and care. We ask that the whole family take

the time to think through this decision before applying to adopt. Most

people don’t realize that pet rabbits are still a very big commitment.

Please visit www.reddogfarm.com for complete details. n

Rooster was surrendered to us

when his owners sold their farm. He is

a gorgeous paint who was a bit shy when

he came to us. Apparently his original

owner was not particularly nice to him,

so Rooster came to us apprehensive

about being handled. Thankfully he

quickly learned that all of us just wanted

to scratch him, and he now loves atten-

tion. Rooster is now being ridden at a walk, trot and canter by one

of our volunteer trainers. He loads confidently into a trailer and has

been on “field trips” to other farms. This little guy will make a great

hunter, eventer or trail horse! He recently starred in his very first

horse show in the “green bean” division for young horses.

Visit www.reddogfarm.com for more information on Pete, this

sweet horse. n

Clover and her son, Basil,

originally came to us from a case of

neglect in eastern NC in which the

Humane Society of the United States

asked for our help with the farm

animals involved. They were adopted

from us last year but their adoptive

owners had to sell their farm, so they

brought them back to us so that we

could find another great home. They

are gorgeous, healthy, friendly goats

who will follow you around for at-

tention. Basil has been castrated and

both have been vaccinated.

Please visit www.reddogfarm.com for more information on this

lovely pair of goats. n

Jazz was the 6th female pit bull puppy

that we tried to rescue early this year along

with her siblings. However, the owner had

already given her away to someone else

before we got there. Fortunately for Jazz,

her foster mom kept close tabs on her and

recently found her abandoned at a local shel-

ter. We pulled her just two days after being

dropped off there. Jazz is just like her sisters

- cute and very sweet. She is hoping that

someone will want to adopt her despite her

being a little late to the party. So far she does well with other dogs

and is learning her manners very quickly. Jazz has been vaccinated,

microchipped and spayed and is ready to find her new forever family!

If you are interested in adopting Jazz, please visit our website at

Puggy goes by many names, Pugarella, Mrs. Pugglesworth, Puggy Sue, but we all agree that she’s a snorty, snuggly ball of adorable. She is an adult Pug at least 6 years old, and has some vision issues. But, she is very sweet, and loves to nap curled up on a fluffy pillow. All of us at the shelter have fallen in love with her. She’s house trained, gets

along with other dogs and cats. We are hoping to find her a great home. Puggy is in good health, other than her sight issues and being a little over weight. Ginger a gorgeous 5 year

old American Foxhound has

been waiting for a home since

January 12. Like the culinary

delight, this Ginger is very

versatile. She loves to romp

big love bug that enjoys snug-

gling. An outdoor enthusiast, she was dynamic in the Hiking Hounds

program. This well rounded dog is looking for a home where she can

continue her favorite activity: knitting! Pick out a pattern & color

Krista. Currently the only

Blue Russian in the

kennel, Krista, a 3

year old DSH, really

stands out! Krista

has a unique talent of

being able to play 2

musical instruments

at the same time! That’s right! She is proficient in both the mandolin

and harmonica. In fact, Krista and Sadie are collaborating on a few

songs for FCAC’s premier CD release, Almost Home: Songs of the

Heart. Although the CD release date hasn’t been set, Krista knows

her musical talents will make her a star! Act now, don’t delay!

Sadie a beautiful 1 year

wandering HWY 150 in mid

since. She’s been writing a

few country songs about her

adventure and is certain that

her latest song, “Wandering

Girl” will rank up with Elvis’s

“Hound Dog”. Sadie would

love a home where she can play

outdoors, go on walks and pursue her career in music.

Bunco! “We love being able to socialize and talk! The staff at FCAC

allow us to use the Community Room and we get to use the micro-

wave for popcorn! It’s great!!” said Latte, the youngest of the group.

Atticus. What does an

English musician; an American

actor; a Platonist philosopher

mon? They are all named after a

magnificent Lynx Point Siamese

who is available for adoption at

FCAC! Atticus, a gorgeous 1

year old DSH has been waiting

for a home since 1/21/12. The

only feline at FCAC fluent in

French, his mantra is “Je suis le

Juno. Mythology enthusi-

asts know that Juno is an ancient

Roman goddess; the protector

However, around FCAC, Juno

refers to a happy, lively Husky mix

that would love to share her smile

with a new home! “Her smile is

contagious” barks Mork, her buddy

in adoptions! Juno also has the in-

credible talent of making balloon art, which can really come in handy

for birthday parties and weddings. Just think of the money you can

Success Stories - Please send us your stories of successful adoptions

Our home is a very animal

friendly place with dogs,

cats, fish, birds and possibly

anything else that happens our

way. We are also believers in

rescuing animals and helping in any way we

can to keep animals safe, healthy and loved. So

begins the story of Tom…

I had seen copies of Triad Happy Tails

Magazine and thought it was a great

magazine, but a dangerous magazine for

me! I would want to adopt every one of

the animals I would see. However, the

September 2010 cover story on older dogs

really touched my heart as did the story of

Tom and Sherry, dogs that had been together

for 10 years. Tom’s photo kept showing up–

in Triad Happy Tails Magazine or Pet of the Week–a photo I kept

with me. I went to the animal shelter twice to see Tom and Sherry

but kept thinking I cannot take in two more dogs along with my

three. I thought it was really important for these two dogs to stay

together, so I sponsored Sherry’s adoption and made sure Tom was

also sponsored. This was definitely a sign of things to come. My

husband even went to the shelter, unbeknownst to me, to see if he

thought we could manage five dogs. It was not to be, not even for

Christmas. I could not get Tom out of my mind–he really deserved

a chance to be happy again in his remaining years.

Because I had sponsored Sherry’s adoption, I got a call one day

that Sherry had been adopted, but not Tom. While I was so happy

for Sherry, my heart broke for Tom. At that point I just made up my

mind that I was going to adopt Tom over my husband’s objections.

A word to the wise when you go to the shelter, number one–

plan on adopting and number two–have all of your other animal’s

paperwork in order. I got Tom from the cage, took him to the desk,

and did not have all of the correct paper work on my three other

dogs and cat. So to my dismay, I had to return Tom to his cage,

which I believe was more traumatic for me than him. Also, it was

the weekend so I was going to have to wait until Monday to clarify

the paperwork with our vet. I was positive that someone else was

going to get Tom before I could return. That was not the case.

In early February after many

months in the shelter, Tom came to

our “animal friendly home”. And yes,

my husband was still objecting until I

brought Tom into the house and he went

right to my husband, rolled over on his

back to have his belly rubbed and they

have been inseparable ever since. Tom

being an older dog, was very quiet and

mellow and tolerated the other three dogs

without much difficulty, he just seemed

to belong.

I believe Tom is very happy in his new

home. I want everyone at the shelter to

know how much I appreciate all of the love

and care they gave Tom and for the care they

give to all of the animals every day. I also

want them to know that Tom is walked on a leash along our road

which we consider his quiet time, all alone to just amble, another

advantage of an older dog! But also, Tom has a large wooded,

fenced back yard where he has total freedom to run and play with

Dakota, Gracie, and Caramel and occasionally Daisy, the cat. He is

home and he is happy.

that now! At times, his hind quarters can

be shaky and we’re considering physical

possibly a home without stairs. Austin would like a playful compan-

Meadow, 1-1/2 years old, was

found as a stray, and clearly suf-

fered some indignities in the past.

Not that you could tell it from her

disposition, but from the fact that

she is very skinny and has marks

on her neck from a too-tight col-

lar. Despite her past, she is about

as sweet and lovely a girl as you

could want to know. She’s bright,

inquisitive, and playful, mixed with humbleness and dignity in such a

way that it is inspiring to see. She’s quiet and gentle, she absolutely

loves to be petted, and she will sit or stand next to a person endlessly

while they make of her. She comes when called, knows how to use a

doggy door, and loves to chase a thrown ball.

Tyson is the lone remaining

pup from November girl Jada’s litter

of nine. A happy boy, who is crate

trained, house trained and very eager

to learn, he still needs constructive

outlets to keep him from being a

chewy, diggy puppy boy. Tyson loves

to play fetch, ride in the car, visit

the dog park and play with his foster

sister. He is good with other dogs

and cats but can be shy with strangers

and a little nervous around smaller children. The best furever home

for Tyson would be a quiet household with no young children and a

dog companion to help him grow into the great adult dog we know he

is destined to be.

Belle. At first I had a lot of strikes against

me because I had a bad eye due to glaucoma

and the shelter said no one would want me

because of that, plus my age. Well CBHR did!

They took me to an awesome vet in Greens-

boro who removed the eye for me. I can’t tell

you how nice it is to be rid of the pain! They

checked me out, and said I’m healthy as a

horse! No one can believe that I’m 11 years

old -- hey, you’re as young as you feel! I’m still

adjusting to having one eye, but that doesn’t stop me from playing

with other dogs, I don’t even mind the cats. I’m getting the hang of

this housetraining thing, so if you’re looking for a young-hearted (but

not wild and crazy) hound girl to share a walk or a nice cuddle with,

tell CBHR you’d like to meet Belle!

Buck is an intelligent 11 yr old

Layden. Hello, I am what they call a “special needs cat”. Not sure what that means, but I do know that I have been a resident at the shelter a long time, since April of last year. Don’t get me wrong, the good people at GCAS are very nice to me, I like them very much. But I really need a nice quiet home and would really love to have another kitty buddy as I am very nurturing and will take good care of my new friend. Doc says I may have some heart problems

that might need to be treated later on with medications. Can you find it in your heart to take care of me and give me a loving home that I so desire?

Hopefully yours truly, LaydenYou may visit Layden, A12813436, at Petsmart on Lawndale Dr.

I love to play!! (Just look at me in this pic-

with you too! I am also a good girl in that I

am 100% potty trained and I behave when left

unattended so no need to crate me if you leave – I won’t mess things

up! I just had a visit to the dentist so my toofies are clean too! I have

a small heart blockage, but I am good about taking a pill every day

and it only costs $4 a month! Wow – that is nothing!

As members of Carolina Dog Training Club (CDTC), Greensboro, NC (www.carolinadogtrainingclub.com –

see our ad on page 39), we often get asked about how and when to train rescue dogs. The question usually comes from the adopter, but sometimes from fosters who want to help their dog have the best chance for finding a forever home. So let’s approach this from two angles. First, those dogs in shelters or foster homes that need a family. Second, what to do once you have an new rescue family member. CDTC, like other local clubs, welcomes rescues and often discount classes for them. We offer group classes, which include Puppy, Manners, Beginner I and II, Canine Good Citizen, and competition classes such as Rally and Beginner-Novice. There are few books or articles on training dogs still in shelters or foster homes – how to improve the first impression the dog has on a potential family. Sue Sternberg has a recent book out entitled “Train to Adopt – Humane Guidelines and a Training Program for Dogs in Shelters”. She is an innovator in the field of shelter dog welfare and prolific author of books for all of us (www.greatdogproductions.com – click on Books, Videos, DVDs, then on Books). Section One of the book talks about improving quality of life for dogs and cats in shelters, I will let you discover her wisdom on that issue. Section Two discusses “Training and Enrich-ment for Dogs in Shelters”. With her permis-sion, I would like to discuss a few exercises she recommends that you can teach your rescue dog to help them attract potential families. Anyone working in shelters or fostering dogs should purchase this book. As with all obedience training, sitting at attention is a critical base for good behavior in general. Following her instructions, you teach the dog to offer sit-with-attention to anyone holding the leash, then to offer the behavior

on his own, followed by teaching him to sit and stare, waiting and wagging his tail while anyone holds the leash. The next lesson teaches the dog to take a treat nicely instead of lunging and grabbing it out of your hand. Imagine how impressive this will be for potential adopters. It would be nice for shelter dogs to accept being patted on the head, as most people seem to want to do. Sue shows how to get the dog to accept this using lots of treats (remember, the dog now is sitting nicely and taking treats gently). The fourth is teaching doorway manners. We teach this in our Beginner 1 classes where the goal is to have the dog sit nicely at the door and wait there until we release him, after we have stepped out the door. This teaches the dog self control and, we believe, respect for the human. It turns out to be very useful in many situations around the house, getting in the car, going to the vet, etc. Recently we had a 10 month old golden that jumped and bit frantically whenever anyone new came in the home. After we taught him to sit and wait at doors, we could ask for this alternative behavior around doors. It was the only way we could get him to stop his frantic behavior – he calmed himself down when taken to a nearby door and was told to sit/wait. There are two other exercises that Sue recom-mends that I will let you discover for yourself in her book – well worth the price I guarantee!! Lastly, let’s talk about when to start your newly adopted dog and you in training classes or in sessions with a private trainer. We usually suggest that you spend the first few months establishing a consistent routine and bonding with your dog. Most important is establishing a daily exercise routine – that means more than letting him out in the backyard. Be with your dog, play games, have fun, take walks in differ-ent places, meet new people, explore his new world with him!! Once you enroll in Beginner 1 class, you are on your way to building the

relationship even more. Group classes teach you how to help your dog learn to focus on you and, although he can be aware of and look briefly at the other dogs, he learns to pay attention to you and do the exercises. We help you make training fun and show you how to use positive reinforce-ment methods to build on the good behaviors and remove the unwanted behaviors (think jumping!). Essentially, anything you would not want your children to do, you don’t want your dog to do either (knocking you down going out the door, snapping at food, ignoring you when asked to do something...). The investment and time in this effort will reward you all the years to come with your new family member. Private trainers (vs. clubs like CDTC) can also be extremely useful and worth their weight in gold, especially to solve particular problems (aggres-sion, fears, uncontrollable behaviors, and more). Some also give group lessons and can ease an aggressive or fearful dog through one-on-one training into more distracting environments such as group classes. So, just get out there and do it! Help the shelter/foster dogs be more adoptable. Teach the dogs Sue’s six basic commands to make them more impressive. Help your adopted rescue settle into your home and continue training to make your relationship stronger. Make your goal a canine good citizen!
