Speaker Biography
Partha Choudhury was born in 1983 at Malda, West Bengal, India. In his 10th grade he set a new record in the state level for
securing the highest score in the State Chemistry Exam. After graduating from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharag-
pur he moved to the University of Miami and earned his master’s in Chemistry in 2008. Followed by a brief stint at the Bas-
com Palmer Eye Institute in 2009 he joined the Chemistry Ph.D. program at Wake Forest University. It was at Wake Forest
he discovered his passion for Organic Chemistry and joined Dr. Mark Welker’s group. In his word this was the turning point
of his life and career as Dr. Welker is an excellent mentor, very good teacher, fun and rewarding to work with. Partha has
been working on organo-silicon chemistry, finished his Ph.D. candidacy and is expected to defend by spring 2015.
Speaker Abstract
Title: Preparation and reaction chemistry of novel silanol and in situ silanol dienes
Partha P Choudhury, Prof. Mark E Welker*
Silanols and in situ silanols are excellent candidates for transmetallation. Our group has been working to develop methodolo-
gy for catalytic, exo-selective, enantio-selective Diels-Alder reactions which is based on sequential transmetallation, Diels-
Alder, oxidative addition and reductive elimination. We have performed an extensive study on syntheses of silicon dienes
containing a variety of nontransferable groups known to promote transmetallation. Here we will discuss syntheses and Diels-
Alder reactions of silicon substituted butadienes followed by discussions on syntheses of more highly substituted dienes and
their Diels-Alder, cross coupling chemistry. Scope and limitations of catalytic pathways involving chiral Ni and Pd complexes
will be reported.
Announcement of Election and Call For Nominees
The Central NC Section of the American Chemical Society (CNC-ACS) will be holding elections for the 2015 Chair-Elect and
2015 Secretary/Treasurer positions during the local section meeting on November 20th. Anyone interested in serving in nom-
ination for one of these positions should please contact 2014 Chair, Cale Murray at [email protected] by
November 19, 2014.
Election for Alternate Councilors
The Central North Carolina Section of the ACS (CNC-ACS) is represented at the national level by two elected Councilors.
The section also is allocated two Alternate Councilors. These positions are due for re-election. Five members have been nomi-
nated. Their statements are included in this newsletter. The election will be held using email ballots. Ballots will go out to
all section members by November 14, 2014. The deadline for submitting your vote will be noon on November 20th. The Alter-
nate Councilors selected will be announced at the section meeting on the evening of November 20, 2014. If you have any
questions regarding the election, please contact the 2014 Chair Cale Murray at [email protected].
Volunteers for Webmaster
Do you like to design and maintain websites? Then the CNC-ACS has the perfect volunteer opportunity for you. The CNC-
ACS is looking for volunteers to serve as the section’s Webmaster. The Webmaster designs and maintains our local section
website to keep our members in the know about upcoming events, job openings, and other CNC-ACS functions. If you are

Big Crowd for National Chemistry Week
Approximately 150 people attended the CNC-ACS’s annual celebration of National Chemistry Week.
NCW Chairs Dennis Ergle and Cynthia Willard organized the outreach event which was held at
Guilford College. Numerous volunteers (look for the list in next month’s newsletter) came out to
make this event happen. This year, through the efforts of Bruce McKillican (Syngenta) and Jeff Skor-
das(WFMY2), Dennis Ergle (Lorillard) and Jerry Walsh (UNC-G) were on the WFMY2 Good Morn-
ing Show with Eric Chilton.

Alternate Councilor Statements
Mr. Cliff Bell
Cliff holds a BS in Biology and a MS in Chemistry from NC A&T University. Cliff’s career included time with
the US Navy, RJR Tobacco Company, Forsyth Technical Community College and Winston Salem State Universi-
ty. Cliff retired this year after working at Winston Salem State University for twenty four years. Cliff served
as Chair for the Central NC ACS section in 2013 and had devoted countless hours in support of the chemistry
outreach programs for Central NC ACS Section, Winston Salem State University and other charitable programs.
Ms. Janice Foushee
Janice holds BS degrees in Chemistry (UNC-Pembroke), Accounting (Guilford College) and a MS degree in
Chemistry (UNC-Greensboro). Janice has been the CNC-ACS Treasurer from 2004 through 2014 and the Na-
tional Chemistry Week Co-Chair from 2008 to 2010. Janice has been working at Solenis LLC (and legacy compa-
nies) in the area of polyacrylamide inversion emulsions for the past 14 years.
Dr. Richard Honeycutt
Richard Honeycutt attended Anderson College, (Anderson, IN) and received a Bachelors degree in chemistry in
1967. He was an NIH predoctoral fellow from 1968 to 1971 and received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Purdue
University in 1971. He served as a postdoctoral fellow at the Smithsonian Institute's Radiation Biology laborato-
ry from 1971 to 1973. From 1973 to 1976, Dr. Honeycutt was employed by Rohm and Haas Company
(Philadelphia, PA) as a senior chemist in pesticide research and development. In 1976, he came to CIBA-GEIGY
Corporation (Greensboro, NC) as a senior metabolism chemist and performed research in pesticide metabolism
until 1980. In 1980, he joined The Environmental Investigations Group at CIBA-GEIGY and performed pesticide
environmental research in areas such as groundwater exposure assessment, worker exposure assessment, envi-
ronmental fate of pesticides, pesticide ecotoxicology, and risk assessment for fish and wildlife. Dr. Honeycutt is
currently the founder and owner of H.E.R.A.C., Inc which he formed in 1990, a company which does field re-
search and consulting in the areas of pesticide worker exposure and pesticide environmental fate. He received
the ACS Agrochemical Fellow Award in 1985. He has served as Chair and Councilor for the Central North Caro-
lina Section of the ACS and has served as Chair of the Agrochemical Division of the ACS. He has published
widely in several areas of plant biochemistry and pesticide chemistry and has edited six books in the area of pes-
ticide worker exposure and environmental exposure to pesticides

Alternate Councilor Statements
Dr. Ed Robinson
I wish to serve our local section as Alternate Councilor. I have been an ACS member for the past 25 years and
have served our local section as Chair-Elect (2011) and Chair (2012). For the past several years, I have served
as Chair of the local section’s Public Affairs Committee and as Chair of the ACS North Carolina Government
Affairs Committee. In these roles, I have enjoyed working with chemists across our region and the state to in-
form our elected representatives in Congress and the North Carolina General Assembly about the American
Chemical Society and the role of chemists in our local and state economies.
I received a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from Georgetown University. After completing a postdoctoral posi-
tion at the University of Florida, I began working at Lorillard where I am currently Principal Scientist.
I look forward to the opportunity to serve our section and the ACS in a new role. Thank you in advance for your
support.
Dr. Gail Webster
Gail Webster is an associate professor and currently serves as chair of the Chemistry Department at Guilford
College. She received her Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at North Carolina State University. Gail is a member of
the national Women Chemists Committee (WCC) of the ACS. She began serving on the WCC in 2008 as an as-
sociate member. Through her work on WCC, she has co-authored a white paper about the status of non-tenure
track faculty in the chemical sciences and she serves on the Non-tenure Track Task Force of the ACS. Gail is
amember of the Awards and Recognition subcommittee of WCC.
At Guilford, Gail is the faculty advisor to the ACS Student Affiliates and she has worked with the chapter to do
outreach in local schools and participated in National Chemistry Week events. Her scholarly work focuses on
developing curricular materials to improve student learning through a student-centered pedagogy called Pro-
cess Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL). Gail is a member of the POGIL Project steering committee
and she’s facilitated numerous faculty workshops for the project.
