HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
ACTIVITIES BROADEN
CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES
ferris hispanic heritage monthCELEBRATION: Ferris studentswill be celebrating HispanicHeritage Month with a variety ofactivities next week. (Courtesyphoto)
>From Staff ReportsBIG RAPIDS To honor theolorful and intricate historyf the Hispanic culture, Ferristate University studentsnd community membersill celebrate diversity as
hey participate in observingHispanic Heritage Monthhrough a series of on-campusctivities.
All of the events expose Ferris
tudents to Hispanic culture, istory and language in a Latino
environment, Ferris RecruitingOfficer Natalia Carvalho-Pintosaid. These events also bringto the campus community
discussions on current andsignificant issues the Hispaniccommunity faces. For the last 20 years, theOffice of Multicultural StudentServices and the HispanicStudent Organization havesponsored events on campusthat educate and showcasethe invaluable contributions ofHispanic peoples. This years festivities includea Hispanic Lunch from 11 a.m.
to 1:30 p.m. at The Rock Cafon Sept. 28, which will befollowed by the live, dramaticperformance Portraits ofCourage: Latinos Shaping aNation at 7 p.m. in G. MennenWilliams Auditorium; and guestspeaker West Cosgrove willdiscuss immigration issues at7 p.m. Sept. 30 in BusinessBuilding, Room 111.Its a great idea for students ofall backgrounds to attend this
months events so that they canlearn more about themselvesand others, OMSS AssistantDirector Michael Wade said. All students can benefitfrom attending these events, and other diversity events,at Ferris, Carvalho-Pinto,who also is the HSO advisor, added. Students must learnabout other cultures; theyshould realize that once theyembark on their careers, theywill encounter many peoplewho are different and comefrom different backgrounds. Ithink Ferris does a great job ofexposing students to diversecultures through these types ofcultural events and activities. The United States CensusBureau notes that peopleof Hispanic descent are thefastest-growing populationin the U.S. Wade and otherfaculty and staff believe thatacknowledging this culture,
embracing its many positiveattributes and becoming awareof the unique struggles Latinosface, is both essential to thegrowth of Ferris students, andin spirit with Ferris educationalgoals.Hispanic culture is a vitalpart of American culture andthe Ferris community shouldhave opportunities to engagein and participate in programsto learn more about it. It is our
goal that participants at thismonths featured events willhave an enhanced knowledge
of Hispanic culture, Wade said.
DONT LET HOLIDAY SWEETS
GO TO YOUR TEETH?
(NewsUSA) - The holidaysbring culinary delights, rangingfrom sparking cocktails topotato latkes to Yule logs. Manybemoan the effects of extracalories when it comes to pantssizes, but few consider whatall that celebrating does to themouth.
Every time we eat a foodcontaining sugar, we feed thedestructive bacteria that livein our mouths. As the bacteriachow down, they release anacid. The acid wears downtooth enamel, leading tocavities and eventually to gumdisease. As gum disease is thenumber-one cause of halitosis,or bad breath, indulging intoo many hearty nogs andsugar cookies could leaveyou standing alone under themistletoe.
The holidays might also meanmore red wine and post-dinnercoffees, which can eventuallylead to stained teeth.
Americans feeling the holidayspirit dont need to give upsugarplums -- they simply needto be a little more diligent abouttooth care. Here are some tips:
* Stay away from the buffet.
Continuous snacking meansthat your teeth are constantlyexposed to sugar and theensuing bacterial acid bath.Stick to meals. If youre at thesort of party where grazing isencouraged, fix yourself a plateinstead of standing by the chipsand dip.
* Avoid sticky foods. Foods thatstick to the teeth are more likelyto cause problems than foods
that are easily washed away.Even healthy choices, likedried fruit, can feed bacteria.Likewise, sucking on hardcandies means that sugarsstay in your mouth for a longeramount of time. If you wantsomething sweet, dont go forgummy bears or candy canes-- try a mug of hot cocoa.
* Drink water. No matter whatyou eat or drink, follow it witha glass of water. The waterwill help rinse sugar from yourmouth.
* Try oral care probiotics. Oralcare probiotics, like EvoraPlus(www.myevoraplus.com), may
help make up the difference.Probiotics, or good bacteria, adhere to tooth and gumsurfaces, where they leaveless room for harmful bacteriato attach and grow. With lessharmful bacteria in the mouth,we are better able to maintainhealthy teeth and gums.
* Create a travel kit. Pack atoothbrush and toothpaste, andbrush your teeth after you eat.
Youll keep your teeth healthier-- and feel less inclined to nab asecond helping of pie.

(NewsUSA) - Many peopleare unaware that there areapproximately 7,000 identifiedrare diseases that affect about25 million people in the UnitedStates. Rare diseases areconsidered orphan diseaseswhen fewer than 200,000people are affected. Manyorphan diseases are geneticdisorders. Gaucher disease isone of these genetic disorders.
Gaucher disease, named forthe French physician who firstdescribed the symptoms in1882, is an inborn metabolicdisorder. Patients born with
the disease cannot produce anenzyme, glucocerebrosidase, which helps break downa specific complex lipid, glucocerebroside. If the bodycannot break down this lipid,it builds up in body tissues, including the spleen, liver, bonemarrow, lymphatic system, lungs, skin, eyes, kidneys, heartand nervous system.
For a person to develop the
disease, they must inherit anabnormal gene from eachparent. Gaucher disease affectsabout one in every 40,000-60,000 people worldwide. Thedisease is especially commonin those of Ashkenazi (Easternand Central European) Jewishancestry, where it affects one inevery 450-1,000 people.
Not all people with Gaucherdisease display the same
symptoms. In fact, there arethree types of Gaucher disease.Type 1 Gaucher disease is

he most common form of theisorder. Patients may develop
skeletal abnormalities, enlargedspleens, extreme fatigue, anemia and nosebleeds. Some
patients are diagnosed aschildren, while others dontdevelop symptoms until age 50or 60.
Type 2 Gaucher diseaseafflicts children. Unlike type 1,it causes severe neurologicalsymptoms and usually leads todeath within the first three yearsof life.
Type 3 Gaucher diseaseusually begins in childhoodor adolescence. While it doescause neurological problems, they are typically not as severeas those caused by type 2, andthe symptoms develop moregradually.
Gaucher disease can bediagnosed through genetictesting or a blood test thatevaluates a specific enzymelevel. Most people fromvulnerable populations oftenget tested to see if they carrythe abnormal gene, which could
be passed on to their children. If someone is diagnosed withGaucher disease, enzymereplacement therapy (ERT) ishighly effective in most patients
with type 1, and treats some ofthe symptoms of type 3. ERTdecreases liver and spleen size, reduces skeletal anomalies, and successfully reverses otherdebilitating symptoms of thedisorder, including abnormalblood counts and fatigue.

WHAT IS YOUR CATS BAD
BREATH TELLING YOU?
(NewsUSA) - How many timeshas your cat come to wake youup by rubbing his face againstyour face in the morning? Yourcat looks adorable, but the odorcoming from his mouth maymake his affection less thanwelcome. Of course, you want
to freshen your cats breath,
but before you look into kittybreath mints, you might want tomake an appointment with yourveterinarian.
While post-tuna halitosis isno cause for concern, yourcats breath should not stinkconsistently. If you notice anunrelenting odor, your catmight be suffering from anundetected health issue, suchas oral disease or diabetes. Ifyou notice the following smells, have your cat examined by avet:
* A sweet smell. If you catsbreath smells fruity, it could bea sign of diabetes, especially ifthe sweet breath is combinedwith excessive thirst, frequenturination and weight loss.
* An ammonia-like smell. If yourcats breath smells like urine,he could have kidney disease.Other symptoms include lossof appetite, thirst and frequenturination.
* A bile-like smell. If your catsbreath smells like vomit, hemay have liver problems. Look
for other symptoms, includinga swollen belly, loss of appetiteand jaundice, or a yellowdiscoloration in your cats eyesand gums.
* A smell similar to bad breathsmell in humans. If your catsbreath smells like humanmorning breath, it might havegum disease, the most commoncause of halitosis.
Gum disease is caused bydestructive bacteria, whichcan build plaque and infect thegum line. Professional toothcleanings can help control theproblem, but cats (and noses)benefit greatly from weeklytooth brushing.
If your cat wont allow you tobrush its teeth, try using an oralcare probiotic such as TeddysPride (www.myteddyspride.com). The tasteless, odorlessprobiotic powder, which can besprinkled on pets food, floodthe mouth with healthy bacteria,so the harmful bacteria thatcause bad breath have lessroom to grow.
