TALKING HEADS: Prisoners

benefit from ‘the smiling one’

Since finding herself in limbo in SA, Karina

Andersen has spread her rehabilitation

programme to 42 prisons, writes Penny Haw

Published: 2012/03/05 07:35:01 AM

WHEN Karina Andersen arrived in Cape Town fromEurope in 2006, she had no idea that within twoyears she would have established a foundation, rolled out a value-based leadership programme forthe inmates of Brandvlei Maximum Prison nearWorcester, and written a book.

Today, the SmilingOne Foundation’s Circles ofChange initiative is available as a developmentprogramme to several hundred inmates in sevenprisons across the Western Cape and to more than2000 inmates via a regular broadcast on BasicRadio in Brandvlei Maximum, Medium and YouthPrisons every day.

Since inception, 166 inmates have graduated from the programme; another 30 are studying tobecome coaches. But, not only has the SmilingOne Foundation been granted access to all 42 prisonsin the province, it has also extended its reach to other disadvantaged communities through severalreintegration, youth and community-development programmes.

Born and raised in Denmark, Andersen came to the city with the objective of setting up home withher partner and her two children, whose father had died in a car accident four years earlier. Afterjust a few weeks in SA, however, the couple split up and Andersen found herself in limbo in a foreignland.

Determined to stay and succeed, she decided to further her development as a nutritional, life andbusiness coach, a career she’d begun in Europe. In the process, Andersen found her new life in Africaand the unexpected turn it had taken compelled her to "look at things differently and to listen moreclosely to the messages life was telling me".

"I had always been very strict and controlling in all areas of my life, including what I ate, how Iexercised and my work. But, when things didn’t go as expected in SA, I started to look and listenmore carefully to what was happening around me. That resulted in treating myself differently andgiving up some of the control I’d hung on to with determination," she says.

Increasingly philosophical in approach, Andersen reassessed her approach to coaching. Her style, she says, had been largely shaped by the way she experienced life after the death of her husband in2002; she’d focused primarily on asking questions, planning interventions and finding solutions.

"Back then, my focus was having the answers. Today, I know I don’t have the answers. I askquestions and let them shape naturally. I let the process take me." W ith few resources and evenfewer contacts in a new country, she advanced her coaching skills by getting to know herself better.Together with her friend and colleague, Vivian Tatschke — who lives in Denmark but is a partner inSmilingOne — Andersen examined concepts such as responsibility, healing, self-identity, gratitudeand purpose, with the objective of achieving personal growth and developing her coaching skills.

"In fact, I resumed, or rather intensified, a process that began in 2005 when I was struggling withmy own healing process following the death of my husband. T he name, SmilingOne, comes from thesense of having been broken into pieces and then gradually coming together and feeling like I was a‘one’ whole person again. ‘Smiling’ refers to the idea of the genuine smile returning to my face. "

It’s tempting to dismiss Andersen’s story as another overly sentimental, new-age account of the lifeof a modern woman. But for many, including hundreds of prisoners in those so-called universities ofcrime, it’s a great deal more.

During the process of re-evaluating her method of coaching, Andersen made copious notes with the
