outside your door. We all need aspecial place to ‘get away’ froma very busy and sometimesscary world to experience se-renity. This place has become a fast growingphenomenon called ‘the outdoor room’.
Outdoor rooms are a relatively new con-cept in North America. In an increasinglypressurized world, we have a need to beoutside enjoying fresh air and nature, whiledoing the things we would normally doindoors. Leading edge home shows featureoutdoor kitchens, bars, entertainment cen-tres and relaxation areas - in short, completeoutdoor living all year long.
In spite of what you’ve heard, size does notmatter. There are some amazing small out-door rooms which are very intimate, privateand spectacular. One of the early outdoorroom designers, Ruth Olde of Blasig Design,has created some delightful escapes, bothsmall and large. By applying some amazingdesign techniques, even tiny rooms can seemvery spacious. Well placed plants, mirrorsand water features can transform small out-door spaces into cozy corners. Because wedon’t all have perfect back yards, Ruth saysthat sometimes the front yard is the perfect
spot. If you live on a quiet street, with somegood design elements, it may be the best loca-tion for an outdoor room.
I have always been concerned about theyear round use of outdoor rooms and the
cool, damp West Coast weather. “Not a prob-lem,” says Ruth, who often recommends cov-ering outdoor rooms with solid, complemen-tary, innovative roofing. Rather than usingunsightly coverings, such as fibreglass, Ruth
recommends using tempered glass whichis not much more expensive. Ruth also sug-gests that well designed skylights can offerquite a delightful effect and lighting canplay a very important role in outdoor livingrooms.
To combat cool, damp temperatures,strategically placed heaters can solve thisproblem nicely. One outdoor room I visitedlast fall had an outside wall designed as afireplace. I must say on a cold October nightthe juxtaposition of the outdoor fireplaceand warm, comfy chairs created an ambi-ence hard to match. Okay, the wine may havehelped too!
Water is not necessary as part of an out-door room, but it sure creates atmosphere.Whether it’s an adjacent pool with koi, anelegant fountain or a stream gurgling overstones, water is calming and serene, while atthe same time adding an element of interestand magic to an outdoor room that can sel-dom be duplicated indoors.
Plants, as always, put the finishingtouches on an outdoor room. Fabulous vines,which can add perfume, privacy, colour andpossibly fruit, are absolutely essential. Tall,narrow vertical trees can add delightfulscreening, as well as frames for lighting atnight. The pièces de resistance, however, arecontainers. Not ordinary containers, but ex-traordinary ones with great design elementsthat move them from potted plants into theworld of art.
