Grow in the Grace of Giving

In the first verse of the hymn “We Give You But Your Own,” we sing, “Wegive You but Your own In any gifts we bring; All that we have is Yours alone,A trust from You, our King.”

It is likely that we have sung this hymn many times without realizing theimplication of the words. Through faith, we recognize that all we are and allwe have come as gifts from our gracious Heavenly Father. We recognize thatGod owns everything and that we have nothing, except as stewards of God.We give to show our gratitude to God for His gifts to us. Our love andgratitude compel us to grow in our giving.

As we grow in the grace of giving, we can find four different levels of giving:

1. At the first level of giving, people give only a token amount, if anythingat all. The amount given represents the excess or left-over amounts aftereverything else is taken care of. This giving is normally not associated withfaith, but with duty or for the sake of appearances.

2. The next level of giving could be referred to as self-interest giving.People see the church as important so they give to keep the doors open. The attitude toward giving could be compared to paying dues. Giving isan obligation.

3. The next level of giving is out spiritual gratitude and obedience. Atthis stage, a person recognizes how God has freely given him/her salvationthrough His Son Jesus Who went to the Cross for his sins. Out ofthanksgiving for what Jesus has done, there is a response of gratitude.Jesus has paid the penalty of sin so that we can be made right with God.When someone understands what Jesus did on the cross, there is joy ingiving. Giving at this level stops focusing on the church budget andbecomes a personal surrender of one’s life and resources. People at thislevel give regular and proportionate amounts of their incomes willinglyand cheerfully. They excel in the grace of giving.

4. The fourth level of giving is at such a high level of stewardship that fewpeople reach it. At this level, a person gives beyond his/her ability to give. The final level is the level of sacrificial giving.

May God grant us loving and giving hearts so we can worship and praiseour Heavenly Father as we learn to excel in the grace of giving.

Music... Part IV of an Occasional Series

What Does a Music Director Do?

- Worship Planning

- Keyboard Accompanying

- Ensemble Direction

- Service to the National Church

As a music director, I often consult hymnal companions to find background information on the hymnsthat we sing. These resources describe the writers of hymns and the composers of hymn tunes, as wellas the particular history of the hymns themselves. These details help me choose hymns of the seasonor provide devotional material for rehearsals. A few months ago during Sunday School, I explainedthe background of “Amazing Grace” to our middle school students, and one could have heard a pindrop.

The hymnal companion for Lutheran Service Book is now in preparation for publication, and theeditors asked me to write the biographies of ten composers whose music appears in LSB. My trainingin music history gives me background for this task; four of my given composers lived in German-speaking lands of the 17th and 18th centuries, my area of specialty. In addition, because so manycontemporary composers wrote music for LSB, most writers were also assigned several livingcomposers. For example, I prepared the biography of Sonja Hummel, who studied composition atConcordia Chicago with my husband Jonathan. (Fortunately, someone else wrote my husband’sbiography. It would be impossible for me to give an unbiased account!)

In preparing these biographical essays, I strove to provide interesting details beyond the basic sketch ofa person’s life and work. I always kept my Trinity audience in mind--choir members, Sunday Schoolstudents, and Triangle readers. A few of my more unusual “finds” appear here:

Born in the Netherlands but mostly employed in Italy, Heinrich Isaac (c. 1450–1517) was known by the(incorrect) nickname “Arrigo il Tedesco” (Harry the German).

Ahasverus F. Fritsch (1629–1701) grew up during the Thirty Years’ War (1618-48). At age two, he andhis family fled their town after it was looted and burned. As a boy, he avoided robbers and soldiers byhiding in graves, cellars, and bushes; at times, the very clothes he wore were stolen from him.

The father of Ronald A. Nelson (b. 1927) worked for a time at a piano factory in Rockford, Illinois, and his young son played all the instruments there. Later in life, Ronald Nelson wrote the musicfound in LSB’s Divine Service, Setting II.

Thomas E. Lock (b. 1962) served his vicarage at a church in Greenwich, Connecticut, a bedroomcommunity for New York City. With his supervisor, he ministered to parishioners, townspeople, andfirefighters there following the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

Sonja Hummel (b. 1962) described well the purpose of hymnal companions:

Preserving our Lutheran hymnody has become something of a crusade for me . . . . As a result, I’malways looking for ways to educate people about hymns and to help them experience hymns in newways in the hope that they will come to love them as much as I do.

A Letter from Pastor Rogers...

Dear Trinity Family,As many of you know, I sit on the board for Lutheran Child and Family Services as the English District

Representative. In addition, we at Trinity do many activities to help raise funds for this great organizationincluding gifts at Christmas for the Lutherbrook kids and the Bowl-a-rama. This fall, we have reserved a table atLutheran Child and Family Service’s 20th Annual Harvest Gala.

The Harvest Gala is the centerpiece of LCFS' fundraising events. Guests will be treated to an evening ofworld-class cuisine, exciting auction items, and breathtaking skyline views. Enjoy all of this with the knowledgethat you are coming together with a community of like-minded individuals to fund programs that support andcare for children and families throughout Illinois.

On Saturday, October 24, 2009, Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois will host the 20th AnnualHarvest Gala at the Mid-America Club in the heart of downtown Chicago. The evening will begin at 5 pm with acocktail reception and live jazz. The spirited live and silent auction will commence at 6:30 pm along with an elegant dinner. Please join me, the LCFS Board, supporters, staff and volunteers for anexciting evening of active bidding and delicious food, all for a great cause.

Last year, thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Harvest Gala raised more than $175,000 forLutherbrook Child & Adolescent Center and LCFS programs. Your partnership enables LCFS to bring love, compassion and hope to the thousands of children and families we serve.

Tickets for the Trinity Table are $175 per seat. Please make your checks payable to LCFS and get them to meas soon as you can. I also have a form for you if you are a Thrivent member that will allow Thrivent to match yourcontribution.
