Il Castello

I l Castello Visconteo è una delle“meraviglie”di Trezzo sull’Adda e

sicuramente il simbolo della città,borgo di origini antiche (IV-IIIsecolo a.C.) situato a nordest diMilano.Fu costruito nel 1300, per volere diBernabò Visconti, accanto ad unarocca che la tradizione vuoleedificata dalla regina Teodolinda.Questa fortificazione è statatestimone di una storia tormentata,di cruenti lotte e di conquiste, chevide protagonisti il Barbarossa, iTorriani e i Visconti.Proprio in questo luogo misteriosomorì Bernabò, per mano del nipoteGian Galeazzo. Oggi dell’imponentecastello rimane la torre a piantaquadrata, alta 42 metri, il pozzo fattocostruire nel 1400 dal castellanoVercellino e i suggestivi sotterranei.Del coevo ponte sull’Adda, utilizzatoper trent’anni prima di esseredistrutto nel 1416 dal Carmagnola,sono ancora visibili la spalla el’attacco.

Visite Guidateda marzo a ottobre, nei giornifestivi e tutte le domeniche dalle14.30 alle 18 ogni mezz’ora.Per visite di gruppi e scolaresche e

per visite in notturna negli altrigiorni della settimana, tranne illunedì, è necessario prenotare allosportello turistico della Pro Loco,tel. 02/9092569.

The CastleThe Castle of the Visconti family isone of the “wonders” of Trezzosull’Adda and certainly, it is thesymbol of the town, a village ofancient origins (IV-III century BC),situated to the north-east of Milan.It was built in 1300, according toBernabò Visconti’s will, next to afortress that is traditionally said tohave been erected by the Longobardqueen Teodolinda. This fortificationhas been witness of a tormented storyof sanguinary fights and conquests,whose protagonists were theBarbarossas, the Torrianis and theViscontis. In this very mysteriousplace, Bernabò died, killed by hisnephew Gian Galeazzo. Today, whatremains of the imposing castle are: itstower with a square plan, 42 metershigh, its well, built by the Lord of thecastle Vercellino in 1400, and itssuggestive dungeons. What can still beseen of the coeval bridge on the riverAdda, destroyed by the earlCarmagnola in 1416, thirty years afterits construction, are its shoulder andits juncture.

Le Chiese

L e Chiese, a Trezzo sull’Addasono numerose e tutte meritano

di essere menzionate.La chiesa parrocchiale, di origineMedioevale, è dedicata ai SantiGervaso e Protaso e risale al XVsecolo. Al suo interno conservaaffreschi giotteschi nella cappelladel Crocifisso, alcune pitture e unbassorilievo di pregio. La chiesa diSan Rocco ricostruita nel ‘700 suuna preesistente cappella poicompletamente restaurata neiprimi anni Ottanta. A Concesa,frazione di Trezzo, c’è il famosoSantuario dedicato alla Madonnain stile barocco sorto nel 1641 sulluogo di una apparizionemiracolosa e la chiesa parrocchiale,neogotica con pianta a croce latinacon tre altari. Accanto allaparrocchiale, dedicata all’Assunta,si può ammirare la vecchia chiesacon un bel campanile Romanico ela piccola canonica. Un discorso aparte merita l’Abbazia di SanBenedetto dove, murata nell’absidenel 1925, è stata ritrovata unastatua del Santo di fatturaromanica (XI - XII secolo). Ilmonastero, oggi, è una cascina.

The ChurchesThere are a lot of churches in Trezzosull’Adda, and all of them are worthbeing mentioned. The parish church,of medieval origin, is dedicated tothe Saints Gervaso and Protaso anddates back to the fifteenth century.Inside there are well-preservedfrescos by Giotto in the CrucifiedChapel, some paintings and avaluable bass-relief. The church ofSaint Rocco was rebuilt in theeighteenth century on a pre-existentchapel and then completely restoredat the beginning of the eighties. InConcesa, a hamlet by Trezzo, thereare several churches: the famousBaroque Sanctuary dedicated to theBlessed Virgin, which was erected in1641 on the place where a miraculousapparition was seen, and the parish church in its Neogothic style,whose plan has the shape of a Latincross with three altars. Beside theparish church, dedicated to theBlessed Virgin Mary received intoHeaven, you can see the old churchwith a beautiful Romanesque bell-tower and a small rectory. The Abbeyof Saint Benedetto deserves a specialregard. A Romanesque statue ofits Saint, dating back to the eleventhor twelfth century, was found herewalled up in the apse in 1925. Themonastery is a farmstead today.

Il Monastero

N el sec. XII Concesa era uncastello arroccato a picco sul

fiume, alcune case padronali, unachiesa parrocchiale (1155) dedicataalla Vergine Assunta e un Oratoriodedicato a S. Nazario. Nel 1520 vieneinaugurata la nuova parrocchiale alposto di queste strutture crollatesotto il peso degli anni.Dopo alterne vicissitudini, da unaCappelletta sorta per devozionealla Madonna attorno a una fontemiracolosa, per volere del cardinaleCesare Monti, nasce il Santuario,dedicato alla Divina Maternità diMaria S.S. (1641), e affidato dallostesso all’Ordine dei CarmelitaniScalzi di Santa Teresa. Nel 1642 ilCardinale acquista un terrenolungo il naviglio Martesana per il“novo Monasterio” per i PadriCarmelitani. Progettisti gliingegneri Francesco Maria Richinie Carlo Buzzi (già impegnati nellafabbrica del Duomo di Milano).

The MonasteryIn the XII century Concesa was onlya group of buildings: a castle erectedsheer on the river, some countryhouses, a parish church (1155)

dedicated to our Lady, the VirginMary received into Heaven, and aSunday school dedicated to SaintNazario. In 1520 a new parishchurch was opened instead of theprevious two that had collapsedunder the weight of the years.After several vicissitudes, from aLittle Chapel, built in honour of theVirgin Mary around a miraculousspring, according to the BishopCesare Monti’s will and concern, theSanctuary, dedicated to the HolyMotherhood of the Blessed Mary, waserected (1641). Next to theSanctuary it was built the Monasteryof Concesa and the Bishop Montiwanted it to be granted to the Orderof the Barefooted Carmelites of SaintTeresa. In 1642 the Bishop bought apiece of land along the MartesanaCanal to build the “novoMonasterio” and, two months later,the first stone was laid. The engineersFrancesco Maria Richini and CarloBuzzi (engaged in the maintenace ofthe Dome of Milan too) designed it.

Le Ville

T rezzo sull’Adda ha sul suoterritorio molte ville patrizie. Le

più antiche e interessanti, sitrovano lungo il fiume Adda aimargini del borgo medioevale.Villa Gardenghi di stile tardorinascimentale, oggi sede dellaBiblioteca A. Manzoni e della Casadella Cultura, è circondata da ungrande parco che digrada versol’Adda. Casa Bassi, costruita comecasamatta del Castello Visconteo,risale al XV secolo e nel cortileconserva ancora un pozzo fattocostruire dal castellano Vercellinoverso la fine del ‘400. Due sono leVille Appiani. Una è sede delMunicipio, l’altra dell’AlbergoTrezzo.Villa Cavenago, del 700,

conserva ancora intatta lasua struttura ed è arredatacon mobili d’epoca del700 veneziano.L’ottocentesca Villa Ginaa Concesa, è costruita suun promontorio di fronteal santuario. Ora è diproprietà del Comune eSede prestigiosa del ParcoAdda Nord.

The VillasThere is a great number of patricianvillas in Trezzo sull’Adda. The oldestand most interesting ones can befound along the river Adda at theborders of the medieval village. A bigpark that slopes down towards theriver Adda surrounds VillaGardenghi, built in late Renaissancestyle, which today is the seat of thePublic Library and the CultureHouse. Casa Bassi, built as astoreroom of the Castle, used forkeeping the artillery, dates back to thefifteenth century and in its yard ofapproach there is a well. The lord ofthe Castle Vercellino had this wellbuilt towards the end of the fifteenthcentury. There are two Ville Appiani.One is the seat of the Town Hall, theother one is the Hotel Trezzo.Villa Cavenago, of the eighteenthcentury, whose structure is still wellpreserved, is furnished with theoriginal Venetian style furniture ofthe eighteenth century. Thenineteenth century Villa Gina inConcesa is situated on a promontoryin front of the Sanctuary and now itbelongs to the Commune of Trezzosull’Adda and it is the prestigiousseat of the North Adda Park.

L’Archeologia

T rezzo sull’Adda non è solosplendidi paesaggi, un

ambiente naturale interessante,importanti chiese e antichimonasteri. La città offre ai suoituristi anche molte testimonianzestoriche di grande importanza.Proprio qui, tra il 1976 e il 1978, c’èstato il più ricco ritrovamentoitaliano, di epoca longobarda, delXX secolo. Nella necropoliLongobarda, sono state trovate 5tombe, tutte maschili, disposte sufile, definite da mattoni e concoperchi di reimpiego. Al lorointerno sono stati rinvenutinumerosi oggetti: spade, scudi,punte di lancia, croci auree,cinture, anelli, linguette reliquiarioe molto altro. Alcuni di questireperti sono piuttosto rari perl’epoca alla quale si riferiscono.Nella necropoli di Trezzo sono statiseppelliti personaggi di alto rango,ne sono testimonianza anellisigillari. Un altro importanteritrovamento è la “Situla”, un vasoin rame del IV-III secolo a.C.Di fattura celtica, rinvenuta nel1846, la “Situla” è custoditagelosamente al MuseoArcheologico di Milano.

The ArchaeologyTrezzo sull’Adda does not offer onlywonderful landscapes, an interestingnatural environment, importantchurches and ancient monasteries.The town provides its tourists withmany historical testimonies of greatimportance too. In this very place,between 1976 and 1978, it took placethe richest discovery of theLongobard age in Italy of the XXcentury. In the LongobardNecropolis, five graves were found,all of them belonging to men,disposed in rows, delineated bybricks and covered with covers thatcould have been used several times.Inside of them numerous objectswere found: swords, shields, points oflances, gold crosses, belts, rings,reliquary tongues and much more.Some of these founds are quite rarefor the age they refer to. In thenecropolis of Trezzo personages ofhigh rank were buried, as the sealingrings found in these graves canprove. Another important discoveryis the “Situla”, a pot made of copper,dating back to the IV-III centuryBC. Of Celtic make, discovered in1846, the “Situla” is now jealouslykept in the Archaeological Museumof Milan.

L’Ambiente

L a vita di Trezzo e il paesaggioche la circonda risentono,

naturalmente, dalla presenza delfiume che scorre in un ambiente distraordinaria bellezza. Le acquedell’Adda e le sue rive offrono alvisitatore, scenari di incomparabilebellezza. Nei pressi della vecchia“Fornace Radaelli” da quando ècessata l’attività poi, si sonoformate, e si possono visitare,numerose “foppe” cioè “buche”rinaturalizzate. Dove il terreno erameno permeabile si sono formatistagni ricchi di piante acquatiche:giunchi, carici eninfee hanno qui illoro habitat. Neglispazi circostantisono cresciuti alberie arbusti che hannocreato veri e propri

boschetti, separati da piccoleradure. La fauna delle Foppe,riserva naturale del Parco AddaNord dal 1993, è ricca di specieanimali. Gli stagni, i boschi e i ramidegli alberi sono pieni di vita. Nonè difficile vedere pesci, rane, rospi eraganelle, capinere, merli eusignoli, rigogoli, tortore ecornacchie.

The EnvironmentLife in Trezzo and its landscape arenaturally influenced by the presenceof the river that flows through anenvironment of extraordinarybeauty. The waters of the river Addaand its banks offer scenarios ofincomparable beauty to the visitors.Then, in the nearby of the old“Radaelli Brickkiln”, since when thefactory stopped working, numerousrinaturalized “foppe” that means“holes” have grown and now can beseen. Where the ground was less

permeable, pondsrich in water plantshave formed: reeds,carexes and waterlilies have found heretheir habitat. In thesurrounding areatrees and shrubs havegrown, creating realgroves, separated bylittle glades. Thefauna of the “Foppe”,

natural reserve of the North AddaPark since 1993, is rich in animalspecies. The ponds, the woods andthe branches of the trees are full oflife. It is not difficult to see fish,frogs, toads and tree frogs, blackcaps,blackbirds and nightingales, orioles,turtledoves and crows.

Le Cascine

L a cascina San Benedetto, exabbazia, non è l’unica ad avere

derivazione monastica. Eranomonasteri anche la cascinaBelvedere e la Portesana situatenella campagna a nord del centroabitato. Alte sul fiume si trovano lecascine Rocca e Colombaro(Culumbè). Entrambe in origineerano torri di avvistamento delcastello. Tipiche cascine lombarde,risalenti al Seicento, sono a nord laNuova e la Cascinazza a ovest,mentre a sud dell’abitato diConcesa c’è la Bandeggiata(Bandagiada). Il suo nucleooriginario era già segnato sullemappe catastali del 1700.

The FarmsteadsThe Saint Benedetto farmstead,ex-abbey, is not the only one thatwas previously a monastery. TheBelvedere and Portesanafarmsteads, placed in thecountryside to the north of the towncentre, were monasteries too. Highabove the river you can find theRocca and Colombaro (Columbè)farmsteads. Both of them wereoriginally two sighting towers of thecastle. Typical Lombard farmsteads,dated back to the seventeenthcentury, are the Nuova, in the northpart of the village, and theCascinazza in the west part of thevillage, while to the south of Concesathere is the Bandeggiata(Bandagiada). Its original group ofbuildings was already signed on thecadastral maps of the eighteenthcentury.

Il Fiume

L’ Adda scorre placido oimpetuoso in un ambiente

naturale di rara bellezza, senzadubbio tra i più interessanti dellaLombardia. Qui hanno trovato“casa” cigni, anatre selvatiche,folaghe e cormorani. Qui haorigine il Naviglio Martesana,costruito nella seconda metà del1400 sotto il ducato di FrancescoSforza. Fino alla metà degli anni ‘50il fiume aveva grande importanzacommerciale per Milano ed erasolcato da barconi per il trasportodi sabbia e ghiaia. L’alzaia, chiusa altraffico automobilistico, èpercorribile a piedi o in biciclettada Trezzo sull’Adda fino a Cassanod’Adda e da Trezzo a Brivio.Passeggiando o pedalando sipossono scorgere ranuncoli, iris,menta, pepe d’acqua; si può faramicizia con ghiri, moscardini,volpi, civette, lucci e pesci gatto.Addentrandosi nel sottoboscospuntano i bucaneve, la colombinae la pervinca. Le acque poi, sipossono solcare con canoe e kayakper splendide escursioni.

The RiverThe river Adda flowscalm or impetuousthrough a naturalenvironment of rarebeauty, doubtless one ofthe most interestingenvironments inLombardy. Here swans,wild ducks, coots andcormorants have foundtheir “home”. On the riverAdda is the source of the

Martesana Canal, built in the secondhalf of the fifteenth century by theduchy of Francesco Sforza. Until thefirst half of the fifties, the river had agreat commercial importance for thecity of Milan and long boats thattransported sand and gravel ploughedit. You can go along the towing-path,which is closed to the motor traffic, onfoot or by bike from Trezzo sull’Addato Cassano d’Adda and from Trezzoto Brivio. Walking or cycling you cansee buttercups, irises, mint, waterpepper; you can make friends withdormice, foxes, owls, pikes andcatfish. Going into the undergrowthyou can also see snowdrops,periwinkles and other beautifulflowers. Finally, you can plough thewaters with canoes, kayaks and makewonderful excursions.

La Centrale

L a Centrale IdroelettricaTaccani è un classico

dell’archeologia industriale e fueretta in elegante stile Liberty nel1906 dall’architetto GaetanoMoretti del Politecnico di Milano.La sua costruzione e la sua entratain funzione, fecero di Trezzosull’Adda il centro propulsore dinuove attività produttive edell’economia della zona. Peredificarla le acque dell’Adda sonostate sbarrate da una costruzione incemento e paletti (diga Poiret), altauna decina di metri, e convogliateattraverso dodici bocche di presaverso le turbine. Dopol’utilizzazione le acque sonorestituite al fiume con un bacino discarico a due gallerie che si apronopoco più valle sotto il Castello.

The Power StationThe Taccani Hydro-electric PowerPlant is a classic of the industrialarchaeology and was erected in theelegant Liberty style by the architectGaetano Moretti of the Polytechnic of

Milan in 1906. After its constructionand its opening, Trezzo sull’Addabecame the propelling centre of newactivities and of the local economy. Tobuild the power station the waters ofthe river Adda were blocked with aconcrete construction and some smallpoles (Poiter dam) about ten metershigh, and they were conveyed throughtwelve openings towards the turbines.After being used the waters arethrown back in the river by a flushingbasin with two tunnels that flowdown under the Castle.

I percorsi al CastelloI percorsi guidati sonodiversificati e offrono a gruppiorganizzati, scolaresche,famiglie e a singoli visitatori leopportunità più adatte alle loroesigenze (visiteculturali/didattiche, animate ein notturna).La visita si snoda all’interno delparco, tra i ruderi del Castello,nei suggestivi e imponentisotterranei e sulla torre, dallaquale si possono ammirare ilborgo antico di Trezzo, la doppiaansa del fiume Adda, la CentraleIdroelettrica Taccani e, nellelimpide giornate di sole, lecolline della città di Bergamo,parte del territorio milanese ealtro ancora.Si possono visitare la SalaBernabò e all’interno della Villadel Castello il nuovissimo“Spazio Didattico Informativo”,con le immagini deiritrovamenti e dei reperti diepoca longobarda, la tombadetta del “Gigante”.

Le vie della naturaA piedi, lungo la Martesana, tra isentieri del Parco Adda Nord, ilcanale e il fiume scorronoappaiati in un ininterrottodialogo tra flora e fauna, robinie,ontani neri, germani reali e aironicinerini alla scoperta di unmeraviglioso sottobosco colto neltrascolorare delle stagioni.Partecipanti: gruppi di massimo25 persone; percorso: Concesa –Vaprio d’Adda; durata: 1 h e 30’.

Routes to the CastleGuided routes are organizedaccording to targets and offerthe most congenial opportuni-ties that meet interests ofschools, families and every sin-gle person (cultural/didactical,animated tours, even at night).The tour is carried out in thepark, among ruins of the Castle,in the impressive cellars and onthe tower, from which it is possi-ble to admire the ancient smallvillage of Trezzo, the double bendof the Adda river, the Taccanihydroelectric power-station and,during limpid sunny days, thehills of Bergamo, a part of Milanarea and more.It is possible to visit the Barnabòroom that helds ceremonies andexhibitions, and enter the littlevilla of the castle to observe therecent “ educational informativearea” with images of discoveriesand longobard finds, and theLongobard grave of the “Giant”accurately rebuilt.

The Ways of NatureOn foot, alongside theMartesana Canal, through thepaths of the North Adda Park,the canal and the river run sideby side in a never-ending dialo-gue between flora and fauna(locust trees, alders ducks, heronswith white feathers), discoveringa wonderful undergrowth in thechanging colours of seasons.Participants: groups of maxi-mum 25 people; route: Concesa– Vaprio d’Adda; lasting: 1 h 30’.

Oasi WWF “Le Foppe” Appena fuori Trezzo, lontanodall’Adda, una piccola chiazzadi bosco (poco più di 5 ettari) inmezzo alla campagna offre lapossibilità di fare interessantiosservazioni naturalistiche.

Ecomuseo Adda di Leonardo

Il Parco Regionale dell’Adda Nordha realizzato, attraverso il restauroconservativo degli edifici siti lungo ilnaviglio di Paderno e lariqualificazione e messa in sicurezzadella strada alzaia, un percorsonaturalistico culturale formato da 14stazioni ecomuseali e 47 tappe allariscoperta delle impronteleonardesche nello straordinariocontesto paesaggistico del mediocorso dell’Adda.Fra l’inverno del 1482 e la primaveradell’anno successivo Leonardogiunge a Milano dopo aver offerto ipropri servigi a Ludovico Sforza.Nella lettera di presentazione alMoro Leonardo scrive: “in tempo dipace credo satisfare benissimo aparagone di omni altro inarchitettura, in composizione di edificie pubblici e privati, e in conduceracqua da uno loco a uno altro”.Leonardo viene quindi incaricatodal Ducato di studiare il modo direndere navigabile il fiume. Inizial’avventura di Leonardo sull’Adda.L’importanza delle vie d’acquanell’economia del tempo avevaportato Francesco Sforza nel 1457 adare il via ai lavori per lacostruzione del naviglio Martesanache, direttamente dalla concacittadina di S. Marco, avrebbeagevolato i traffici commerciali trale alzaie nelle campagne finoall’Adda, poi al lago di Como e,tramite la Valtellina e il passodell’Engadina, al nord Europa.Lungo questa via giungevano aMilano prodotti agricoli,artigianali e soprattutto pesantimateriali da costruzione.Una visita a questi luoghi permettedi riscoprire l’armoniosa unionetra terra e acqua che nel corso deisecoli ha disegnato questomeraviglioso angolo di Lombardia.

Through the preservative restoration ofthe buildings placed along the PadernoCanal and the requalification andsafety of the tow-path, the North AddaPark realised a cultural naturalisticroute formed by 14 stations and 47stops to rediscover the marks after themanner of Leonardo in the singularlandscape of the middle flow of theriver Adda.From the winter of 1482 to the springof the following year Leonardo reachesMilan, after having served LudovicoSforza. In the letter of introduction tothe Moro Leonardo writes: “in peacetime I think I can prove myarchitectural ability to plan publicand private buildings, or bring waterfrom one place to another”.Therefore Leonardo is asked to study away of making the river navigable.That is how his adventure on the riverAdda starts.Due to the importance of waterwaysin the economy of that period, in 1457Francesco Sforza wanted theconstruction of the Martesana Canal.Directly from the town dell of SaintMarco, this canal would havefacilitated the trades among the tow-paths in the countryside up to the riverAdda, then the Como Lake and,throughout the mountains inValtellina and the pass of Engadina, tothe north of Europe.Along this waterway agriculturalproduce, handmade products andabove all heavy building materialarrived in Milan.A visit to these places gives you theopportunity to rediscover theharmonious union between soil andwater that during the centuries hasdrawn this wonderful corner ofLombardy.
