September 5, 2018

Greetings First UMC family!

Great news! I will be starting a New Member class on Wednesday, September 19th at 7 p.m. at church. We will meet for 3 or 4 Wednesdays for an hour or so, and have folks join the church on either Sunday, October 7th or Sunday, October 14th. ( I will check with the class and decide.) So far I have Aaron and Michelle Whitten, Robbie Lowe and Jeff Rhoades planning on attending, and if you’re interested in becoming an official member of the church, please let me (Pastor Heidi) know that you are interested in attending the class too! We’ d love to have more folks join us.

Our Fall barbecue/ potluck picnic at the parsonage at 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 16th. Sign up in the lounge to let us know what you are bringing, and Jim and I will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, and drinks. If the weather’s really bad, we will bump the picnic to Sunday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. Come enjoy some good food and fellowship with us!

Our choir and praise band will begin practicing again on Thursday nights at 7 p.m. beginning in October. We’re going to wait till then because our beloved organist/keyboard player Jeff Burke is starting radiation treatments on September 10 for 2 weeks, and we’re going to give him some time to recover. Plus our beloved choir director Diane Hiddleson needs some more time to celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary in Hawaii! Congratulations to her and Rick! May God bless you in your marriage.

If you enjoy singing, and have ever considered joining the choir, please do! The more voices-the loudier and the merrier! We have a good time, so don’t be afraid to come join us even if you you can’t read music and have never sung in a choir. A lot of us just learn from hearing how the piece is sung by those who know how to sing and read music well- like our talented director and accompa-nist! If you play an instrument and would like to join in, please let us know that too !

Margaret Creekmore is going to lead a Sunday School class for children on Sundays during

part of our worship time. If we get children more often, I will be asking for people to join her as

part of a rotation on a teaching schedule. Thank you, Margaret, for stepping up to make this com-

mitment. She is reviewing Sunday School materials for young children, as most older children who

show up opt to stay in worship with their parents or grandparents.

Our Trustees have been very busy this summer. Jerry Ward worked hard to get the exterior of

the church cleaned up before the summer festival by varnishing the outside doors and painting a

grill. He had friends help him dig and try to push our church’s leaning garden wall vertical. He and Ira

Neubauer ended up getting it up, and anchored before Ira put some new mortar in. Thanks guys! It

looks good. In August Ira built a new wood staircase with a small deck and rails for our back sanctu-

ary doorway to put over the old, uneven steps. Jerry Ward and Todd Southers helped him get the

pieces assembled in place, and anchored in the wall and onto the new cement base step Ira poured.

This also looks nice and is much safer than the old steps they cover. Thank you very much!!

The Trenton Summer Festival was a big success. Charlie Pike and helpers passed out about

1600 cones of free cotton candy, but we received over $663in donations for it, while Jan Woolcott

and her team of book sale helpers (Pat McCall, Judy Howells, Diane Hiddleson, Teresa Nowland)

took in$1,207 for books, and Tim Whalen and his Sanctuary Café team of Joe and Paulette Wilson,

Dorothy Gordon, Todd Southers, Wayne Nowland and others earned $1,061.25! (If I forgot your

name, God didn’t!) Many thanks to everyone who helped in anyway with the festival! Great job! We

had fun and worked together well to serve our community and raise money for our church!

PLEASE NOTE: Our regularly scheduled Church Conference with our District Superintendent is

scheduled for Thursday, October 18 at 6: 45 p.m.( The Staff-Parish Relations Committee will meet

with the DS at 6 p.m.) Please plan on attending this important meeting in the life of the church. I be-

lieve that we will have to vote to support my husband Jim Reinker continuing as a candidate for or-

dained ministry. He will be meeting with the District Committee on Ministry earlier that same day.

As always, please feel free to call me any time of the day or week that you want to talk, want

a visit, or want prayer or to share an idea for our church ‘s ministry and outreach!

With love in Christ, Pastor Heidi

PS We had a good time on our Arts and Animals trip on July 31st. I am thinking about planning a re-

turn trip to the Toledo Art Museum so we can finish seeing it. They had some good religious art.

SUNDAY DISCUSSION GROUP

We gather after worship to look at the scriptures from worship that week to dig deeper into their

meaning and how they connect to our lives as disciples. We gather in the meeting room after folks

have gotten a chance to grab a few refreshments .

ADULT BIBLE STUDY

We gather Tuesdays from 1- 2 p.m. or so to study the scriptures together with Pastor Heidi. We

read sections of the scriptures and then discuss them, so there is no homework, and you can jump

in and join us anytime. So just bring your Bible and join us in the meeting room for this study. All are

invited to attend. We’re finishing Psalms soon and will probably start Colossians or 1 and 2 Peter.

BREAKFAST & DEVOTIONS AT MOM’S RESTAURANT

If you’re looking for a way to start the week with good food, great company, and a brief devotional,

then come join us at Mom’s Diner on Fort St. in Trenton every other Monday at 8 a.m. Check the

calendar for any possible changes. We always gather in the back room of the restaurant.

CHOIR AND PRAISE BAND

Practice for the Praise Band and the Choir will begin in October at 7 p.m. New members are always

welcome. Come sing and play your praises to the Lord! The choir typically sings about 3 times a

month, and the Praise Band once a month.

APPLYING B IBLICAL PRINCIPLES

8

In 1935, Dr. R. A. Forrest, president of Toccoa Falls College in Georgia, embarked on a trip to visit former students who were serving the Lord on the mission field. R. G. LeTourneau, a prominent Christian businessman, heard him speak in Omaha and was very encouraged by what he heard. The night before Dr. Forrest sailed to Japan, a letter arrived at his hotel containing a check from Mr. LeTourneau for $1,000. Mr. LeTourneau thought it would be nice if Dr. Forrest "had some money in his pocket as he went around the world to give to folks in a tough spot."

Dr. Forrest was elated and kept a detailed accounting of how he used that money to minister to people in need. When he returned to New York, he mailed the records to Mr. LeTourneau. A few days later, a reply came from Mr. LeTourneau that simply read, "Come see me." When Dr. Forrest arrived at Mr. LeTourneau's office in Peoria, he found a man who was deeply moved by Dr. Forrest's record of changed lives. He said, "If you can be trusted with $1,000 and make that kind of impact, you can be trusted with $10,000" and gave him a check in that amount.

Dr. Forrest had received "without paying," and he gave "without being paid" (Matt. 10:8). He typified the kind of giving that God expects each of us to demonstrate as we respond to His good gifts by giving back to Him what was rightfully His in the first place.

Charles Stanley wrote this: "When God deals with us, it is always in abundant grace. He is lavish with His love and forgiveness. None of us can ever repay Christ for what He did for us at Calvary. He generously gave His life so we could enjoy eternal life." He went on to say, "There are two kinds of people: givers and keepers. . . .If you decide to be a keeper, you will miss God's richest blessings. But when you give yourself away, you will reap the goodness of God."

That's because it is impossible to outgive God who has a unique accounting system. He never di-vides; He always multiplies. Will you trust Him today by giving generously to Him who "generously gives us everything for our enjoyment" (1 Tim. 6:17)?

Blessings to you, from your Finance team
