Narration: Trends in the Government Services Industry, by Phillip Mack1

AgendaWe will examine the top three trends in the government services industry

Creating green work environmentsHaving a social media presence Having a Work Life Balance

Narration: Good Morning Mr. Smith, my name is Phillip Mack. My team and I were directed by senior management to research the top three trends in our industry for consideration by Amcor in positioning our firm as one of the top tiered corporations in the government services industry. In researching these trends, I surveyed the department heads of Amcor as well as researched the topics in 4 major trade journals in the government services industry. Surprisingly, we found striking similarities in the trends identified by our senior management and those identified through our research. As identified, the top three trends for consideration by Amcor are 1) Creating Green Working Environments, 2) Having a Social Media Presence, and 3) Having a Work Life Balance.2

Creating Green Work EnvironmentsMake use of efficient designEffects on human health and performanceLower energy useLess water use

Benefits of Green Work Environments:

Narration: Of the 3 trends, the biggest investment from Amcor comes in creating Green Working Environments. Green Work Environments is a diverse topic which covers the application of efficient building to conserve energy and resources, lessen the impact on the environment and wildlife, and create positive effects on human health and performance. Although an initial investment is required, the return on investment is large in terms of its affect on the environment. Green Work Environments achieve savings and the benefits are realized through the use of efficient design, the effects on human health and performance, lower energy use, and less water use. These four factors relate directly to increased profitability and lower liability.3

Creating Green Work Environments A recently published global survey by McGraw Hill showed that:63% of construction firms had new green commercial projects planned between 2013 and 201545% have plans for new green institutional projects50% have plans for green renovation work

Narration: If we at Amcor embark on this endeavor, we will be in good company. A recently published global survey by McGraw Hill showed that many firms are moving in this direction and the trend is only getting bigger. This study showed that 63% of construction firms had new green commercial projects planned between 2013 and 2015. Forty five percent of these construction firms have plans for new institutional projects, and fifty percent have plans for green renovation work. Due to the return on investment, the new social consciousness towards green building, and the support of the government in this area, we feel that as a service provider for the government, we should be positioned to take advantage of this trend. For these reasons, we feel that creating green working environments is one of the top trends in our industry.4

Having a social media presence

Perceived usefulnessLow cost and easy to maintain a presenceThe message is spread through a trusted network of individuals Allows organizations to focus their message on a targeted audience.Benefits of having a social media presence:

Narration: Our next trend for consideration is having a social media presence. As you are already aware the younger generation is very socially aware. They are not just looking for a company to work for, but one that shares their beliefs as well. By having a social media presence, Amcor will be positioning itself to effect its Perceive Usefulness (PU) to its customer base. The concept of perceived usefulness is described as the trust people put in a site which directly relates to its usefulness which in turn relates to their intention to buy. In this way, Amcor has the ability to influence its followers through the trust built from its social media presence. In addition to perceived usefulness other benefits for having a social media presence are that it has a low cost and is easy to maintain, the message is spread through a trusted network of individuals, which means that if Bob likes our product, he is likely to tell his friend Joe and Joe will trust us because he trusts Bob. Also, having a social media presence allows Amcor to focus our message on a targeted audience. This is achieve by directing our message in such a way that it appeals to only customers who fit the criteria we are looking for. Inherently we attract the good customers and repel the bad ones. 5

Having a social media presence

Strategy to building a Social Media Presence:Have a plan for your social mediaPublish timely, relevant content Cultivate a CommunityAsk your audience to engageMake content visually appealing

Narration: Recognizing the need for having a social media presence is only half the battle. To take full advantage of its benefits, a company must have a strategy to building a social media presence and recognize that there are certain best practices for doing so. When creating a social media site, the first thing you must consider is having a plan for your social media site. This means the site must project the message we are trying to convey and we must be looking to achieve certain measurable results from having the site. Another important tenant of having a social media presence is we must publish timely and relevant content. This means that Amcor must be in tune with what is happening now and be a leader in directing our message to lead these trends as they are happening. Our next strategy is to cultivate a community. Its a known fact that people relate to each other better when they feel a part of a community of people who think like them. Our goal should be to groom a community of people who think like and agree with our values. Another strategy of having a social media presence, is to ask your audience to engage. No one likes a know-it-all, and Amcor can keep a pulse on the trends by asking its audience for their ideas and feedback. In this way, we learn what people are thinking and what is important to them. This defines the very meaning of Social Media where people are encouraged to share and in fact is the sole purpose of connecting people through social media. And lastly, we must make our content visually appealing. As you can see Mr. Smith, the benefits are large and the cost is low, therefore we strongly recommend having a social media presence as one of the top three trends for Amcor to consider.6

Happier employeesEmployee loyalty Lower stress related incidentsBenefits of having a work life balance:Having a Work Life Balance

Narration: Our last, but not least trend in positioning Amcor as one of the top tiered corporations in the government services industry is Having a Work Life Balance. To this point, our first two trends could be viewed as outwardly pointing trends in that they are things which Amcor should do to benefit the environment and the people we have relationships with, however the third trend can be viewed as inwardly facing, in that it benefits the people that work for Amcor directly to achieve a better work environment and more productive company. Work Life Balance does not mean that we devote an equal share of time to work and non-work activities, nor does it mean one size fits all. Individuals should be striving for the mixture that fits them.

As we attract younger workers into the workforce, we must keep in mind that they are not motivated only by compensation. They have a different set of values: - 88% prefer a collaborative work-culture rather than a competitive one - 74% want flexible work schedulesNo matter what the balance between work and personal life amounts to, we can all agree on a common set of benefits of work life balance which are, happier employees, employee loyalty, and lower stress related incidents.7

Having a Work Life BalanceWhat are the steps to obtaining a Work Life Balance?

What does idea balance look like in your life? What does ideal balance look like to the people who depend on you or partner with you? What does a typical week look like for you? What are the gaps?

Narration: There are steps to achieving work life balance, that is, work life balance does not happen by itself, it takes a commitment from management, but by employing a set of core values it can be achieved. The thing to remember is work life balance is an individual thing. What works for one person does not necessarily work for another. In reaching this common goal, there are four question we can begin with to help define work life balance for each person:

1. What does ideal balance look like to you in your life?Finding work life balance begins with each employee thinking about what will work for them, and if theyre not, then we find time to help them.

2. What does ideal balance look like to the people who depend on you or partner with you?An employees definition of work life balance will be heavily influence on striking a balance with those people that live with them. By striking a balance, we mean that theres often a gap between the definition of whats ideal and their partners definition of whats ideal.

3. What does a typical week look like for you? Before you can decide where youre going, you must realize where youve been. Employees must define whats and average week for them and use that as a compass for where theyd like to end up.

4. What are the gaps? Finally, once you identify the gaps between what you average work week looks like and your ideal work week then compare it to your ideal work week and your loved ones ideal work week, you can decide how to achieve it.

In review of our internal survey among senior management, which was consequently shared among their employees, having a work life balance scored highest among the three trends, therefore we feel it should be included in the top three trends for consideration by Amcorp.8

SummarySurvey of senior management Research of industry specific trade journalsConsideration of the three recommended trends:Creating Green Work EnvironmentsHaving a Social Media PresenceHaving a Work Life Balance

Narration: In conclusion, wed like to mention that the information we presented today was the result of many hours of gathering information from our own senior management, research from industry specific trade journals, and suggestions from employees shared by senior management when responding to our survey. After careful consideration we tallied the top three trends and recommend for adoption into Amcor the following three trends: 1) Creating Green Work Environments, 2) Having a Social Medial Presence, and 3) Having a Work Life Balance.

Thank you very much Mr. Smith for your time.9
