Letter From the Editors The fall and winter seasons have arrived and it’s our favorite time of the year! There’s a slight chill in the air and the sun is bright, but the cool weather is as fleeting as the days are short. Should we go crazy overhauling our wardrobe with boots and scarves? We’re all over looking like a million bucks without dropping a grand. The fashion story on page 11 talks about great ways to mix your current wardrobe with winter trends and making it work all year long. The gift giving season breezes into the 954 with the cool, crisp air. Emerging designer Amanda Valdes creates amazing art on great items such as iPhone cases and slip on sneakers. Her one-of-a-kind artsy approach makes every piece as unique as the person who will receive the gift. Check out our feature story on Amanda on page 5 for more information. We love taking the time to wind down from our busy lives and just enjoy the season. There are many great places to visit in South Florida, like the Bonnet House in downtown Fort Lauderdale (13). Art Basel in Miami and Art Walk on Las Olas take place in December and they are great fun for the whole family. What better place to strut your new winter style? We hope you look at this issue as your guide to get you through the season in style. We have poured our ideas on style, fashion, and gift giving into this magazine to make your season go by as effortlessly as possible. It was truly a blast for us to put this magazine together, so we hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed collecting stories.

Local artist Amanda Valdes: Her collections are dark, provocative and whimsical. No I’m not talking about the latest fashions on the runway. I’m talk-ing about the artwork of Amanda Valdes.Valdes was born in Miami and raised in Palm Beach. She’s come a long way since she picked up that first paint brush at the young age of 2. She studied Communica-tions at Florida Atlantic University before transferring to the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale to study graphic design and il-lustration. Nowadays her work can be seen all over South Florida. Valdes has murals at Howley’s Restaurant, Monarchy Nightclub, and Respectable Street Café in West Palm Beach. The latter, an alternative mu-sic club, hosts her proud-est piece, a 30’ x 60’ mural. If that’s a little out of your way there’s no worries, her art can be seen at Dada’s restaurant and Strand Salon in Delray Beach. Or you could even head down to LF at Las Olas.

If you want to purchase one of her piec-es but are looking for something smaller and more affordable a great opportuni-

ty is the SmallStuff 5 Exhibit at Bear & Bird Boutique + Gallery, located in Lauderhill, Fl. You bet-ter hurry the exhibits only open from November 20, 2011 – Janu-ary 14, 2012 and it’s “cash and carry” so the best pieces go quick. If you’re a slow poke and the good stuff is gone never fear, her on-line store is sure to please. She has prints on posters, and can-vas but it doesn’t stop there. There are also iPhone cases, iPad cases, iPod/mp3 player speakers, necklaces, totes, coast-ers, ornaments and even shoes.

In March of 2008, David “Redd” Carreras, an Art Insti-tute of Fort Lauderdale alumni, was getting sick of buy-ing over-priced t-shirts and decided he was going to start a new movement centering the attention on music and af-foradble priced tees. He started SHADESOFREDD, an ur-ban t-shirt company that focused on anyone who lived by the quote, “music defines me.” The brand is still quite un-derground, but is forming its name as each day goes by.

5

Page 9: Trend 954

Q: What made you decide to start SOR?A: Prices on T-Shirts started get-ting way to expensive. I wanted to make an affordable brand.

Q: Where did the idea for the blastman as your logo come from?A: The logo blastman came from the universal logo “crosswalk man” only thing is the blast-man is carrying a ghetto blaster. The logo, “Blastman,” is a visual representation that every artist wants to express. It symbolizes individuality and self-expression on the go.

Q: Where did the name “SOR” come from?A: In 2008 SOR was created by two people; “Shades” and myself “Redd.” Both names are nick names given to us when growing up in the hip hop community.

Shades being a B-boy and myself from Graffiti.

Q: What does SOR represent?A: SOR represents no boundaries. Dress as you feel and be positive. Don’t worry about what people think of you. “Let Music Inspire Your Taste For Fashion”

Q: Who is SOR made for?A: This clothing line is for any-one that loves keeping music a positive influence in their life. SHADESOFREDD funk-a-fies ev-eryone’s taste. It is the only cloth-ing line that you can wear 25/7. We want everyone and anyone to feel that they can wear it. Q: Where can locals buy SOR?SHADESOFREDD Clothing can be purchased at FlatSpot Board Shop in Coral Springs and online at Shadesofredd.com

Q: Do you plan on opening your own brick and mortar store?A: My goal is to own a warehouse that will have a store front.

Q: Do you plan on making any women’s clothing?A: Yes I do, and it’s the question that I’m asked the most. Women deserve to be a part of the move-ment as well. Plus they spend more money than guys. Cut & Sew is the ultimate goal.

Q: What are the future plans for SOR?A: To be on the map as the great-est clothing lines out. As of right now I’m looking for that one person that can get SOR to the next level.

Are you interested in art, architecture, history, or the out-doors? Everything is all in one historical landmark in Fort Lau-derdale. It is called the Bonnet House Garden & Museum.

Bonnet House

This gorgeous 35 acre home is located just min-utes from the Art Insti-tute of Fort Lauderdale, right on the beach of the Atlantic Ocean. It is for those who appreciate art, history, and the outdoors. It is a beautiful sanctu-ary to escape to in the middle of the city of Fort Lauderdale. The outdoors include a large collec-tion of orchids, two ama-zon parrots, a Moluccan cockatiel, a mating pair of mute swans, wild Costa Rican squirrel monkeys, gopher tortoises, and manatees in the canal.By: Mallory Brown

A Little Bit of History

A man named Huge Taylor Birch purchased the site in 1895. He gave it to his daughter Helen and her husband Frederic Clay Bartlett as a wedding gift in 1919. They began the construction of the beautiful European archi-tecture just a year later. Helen died in 1925 of breast cancer. Years later he remarried Evelyn Fortune Lilly and the two began the fancy and embellishing details of the Bonnet House. Frederic passed away leaving Evelyn Bartlett to give the house to the Florida Trust of Historic Preservation in 1983. The Bon-net House was recorded as a historical land-mark in 2002 by the City of Fort Lauderdale. The Art

Frederic Clay Bartlett was an artist and worked on mural pieces. His artwork is dis-played in museums such as the Corcoran Gallery, the Carnegie Institute, the Art In-stitute of Chicago and in the Bonnet House studio and main house. Frederic inspired his new wife Evelyn to paint. Her work is also showcased in galleries up north and of course displayed in the Bonnet House. Be-fore Helen passed, she and Frederic also collected art. Their collection included pieces by Georges Seurat, Paul Gauguin, and Pablo Picasso. These pieces were do-nated to the Art Institute of Chicago in the Helen Birch Bartlett Memorial Collection. Go For a Visit

The Bonnet House Museum is located at 900 North Birch Road in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Take a visit and tour Tuesday- Sat-urday 10:00- 4:00 PM or on Sunday 11:00- 4:00 PM. Admission is only around $20.00. Once you see the Bonnet House you might just fall in love with the beauty, artwork, and scenery. They allow you to host your wedding or ceremony or corporate and special events there. They also have adult workshops such as outdoor watercolor, cal-ligraphy, pastel, and acrylic classes. On location is a museum shop where artwork, handmade crafts, clothing, jewelry, and other gifts can be purchased.

Popular Beauty Myths: Fact or Fiction?

You should drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Fact or fiction? This is just one of many popular beauty myths that we grew up listening to and that has passed from generation to generation. One fact is that Americans spend more money on beauty products than on education. So stop spending money, time and energy on misguided information and separate fact from fiction.

1. Shaving makes your hair grow back thicker and darker. Fiction. Shaving does not change the thickness or color of the hair. When you shave, you only cut the follicle but not the stub, which is thicker and darker than the ends.

2.Trimming you hair often makes It grow faster. Fiction. Trimming your hair will not make it grow faster. Hair grows from the roots not from the tips. Trim-ming may get rid of split ends but does not promote hair growth.

3. Drinking tea can make teeth yellow. Fact. Not only tea, but also coffee, red wine, white wine, and sodas. These make the tooth enamel become yellow over time. Try using a straw when possible to avoid the discoloration of your teeth.

4. Chocolate causes breakouts. Fiction. Chocolates won’t cause breakouts. Acne is caused by stress, hormones, poor diet, and cleansing habits. In fact, researchers found that dark chocolate actually keeps skin more hydrated. Just keep portions under control.

10

15

Page 19: Trend 954

5. Split ends can be reversed.Fiction. There is no product that can fix split ends. The only natural and most effective way to get rid of split ends is by trimming them. Yes, products can make it less noticeable but it will not fix the problem.

6. The more expensive, the better. Fiction. There are many amazing beauty products that are afford-able and that can be found at your local Walgreens or CVS. You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on a product because you are paying for the package. Just because it’s expensive doesn’t mean that is necessarily better.

7. Always pump your mascara wand.Fiction. In case you were wondering why your new mascara is drying out too fast, pumping your mascara wand puts air on the wand and dries out the formula a lot quicker. If you want to get the excess off of it just twist it out of the tube.

8. High heels cause varicose veins. Fact. Unfortunately, this one is a fact. High heels create pressure in the calves and can cause veins to pop on the least expected areas. If you are one of those that cannot live without heels, it is recommended to take your shoes off every hour and point and flex your toes. This will relieve the pressure in your calves.

9. Sleeping on your back prevents wrinkles.Fact. According to The American Academy of Dermatology, certain positions can result in “sleep lines.” With time, these lines can turn into deep-set wrinkles.

10. You should drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Fiction. You don’t need to drink 8 glasses of water a day. Yes, you should drink water when you feel thirsty, but the amount of water you intake varies per person weight and how effectively your body uses it.

Toning Exercises Along the Riverwalk

Every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday The Riverwalk Trust presents an exciting lineup of free community wellness pro-grams in Riverwalk Park offering free Cardio Mix and Yoga les-sons.

This initiative of the Riverfront Community is a great opportu-nity for those students who can’t afford the gym or simply rather to enjoy outdoor activities.

Yoga with Ali Hecht6:30 - 7:30 P.M. Monday & ThursdayEsplanade Park

For some time we have heard all the benefits that yoga gives such as stress reduction, emotional wellness, flexibility, improved strength, enhance-ment of the immune system, and

How Could Practicing Yoga Benefit You?

The principle of yoga is based on meditation, a process which clears the mind and spirit away from the problems and stress of everyday life. The purpose of meditation is to train, calm and focus on one goal to reach that inner peace that is being sought.

According to medical re-search, due to advanced brain scanning technology, researchers are beginning to show that medi-tation directly affects the struc-ture and function of the brain, changing it in ways that seem to increase attention span, improve memory, and sharpen focus.

With so many advances in technology and constant depen-dence to be communicated, we are being exposed to a new era of dis-tractions that are directly affect-ing student’s in their daily perfor-mance and concentration.

WinterfestOn Friday October 28th, Eight Ai fash-ion designer showed off their garments in the entrance way of the Ocean Ballroom of the Harbor Beach Marriott Hotel in Fort Lauderdale. The models stood on pedestals striking poses as guests wearing white from head to toe entered the room. The project managers for this event were Fallon Roy and Kayley Stewart. The Art Institute also had honors students helping includ-ing Maria Rivas, Brittney Vazquez, Libby Wheeler, and Alex Rouzier. Teachers Ms. Tataski and Mr. West were also involved. This was a fitting opening event to intro-duce the Grand Marshal for the 40th annual Seminole Hardrock Winterfest Boat Parade, Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees. The party was hosted by morning show personality Paul Castronovo of Big 105.9 FM, and occupied by a variety of food and beverages provided by sponsors. This exclusive party was one of the toughest tickets to get in town, and was open only to sponsors, media partners and select VIP guests. Music by Sixth Start En-tertainment, and performances highlighted the parades theme.

The Winterfest Celebration provides a means for the community to come together and enjoy unique events, as wells as at-tract positive attention to the Fort Lauder-dale area. Winterfest is best known for its one of a kind Boat Parade celebrating 40 years. This years theme for the parade is “Rocking Boats and Holiday Floats” and will be held on Dec. 10, 2011. The parade is an exhibit of local and talented artists that spend hundreds of hours transform-ing boats into a canvas of color and lights representing the parade’s theme. To get more information on this years Winterfest go to their website; www.winterfestparade.com. It will give you all the information you need, from where to stay, eat, park and volunteer opportunities. Its a great way to meet new people while supporting this huge event.

Born in Los Angeles, of Argentinian descent, Orly Romay had a passion for fashion ever since she was as a little girl, dressing her younger and older sisters, doing their make-up, and styling them. She would often go on set with her father, who used to produce period novels; and was fas-cinated to see how all the dolls transformed and became real on stage.

As graduation approached, she began thinking about her career and looking at her options avail-able. Her sisters believed that her talent was art, “you have to be a fashion designer!”, they would say. She wasen’t ready to leave her home and family just yet and considered schools in the area. The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale had just what she was looking for. She started Ai in 2004, pursuing her Associates degree in fashion design for Children’s Wear.

So why Children’s Wear? Orly has always had a passion for kids, when it came to her thesis col-lection, she wanted to express not only something that she loved, but also something that she felt was missing in the fashion industry, Pre-Teens. “I believe that there is a big hole in that market, and no one is listening to what they want”, Orly stated. Her line, inspired by Pre-Teens them-selves is entitled “Just Me.” At that age it is all about what they want, and they want to feel like grown-ups, they want to be their teen idols, not a pink little princess anymore!” She looked for junior’s styles and silhouettes that she could transform into something for them. She looked for something that would grab their mother’s attention as well, but at the same time still see their “little girls.” Orly then chose bows as anoth-er inspiration to her collection. When asked, who she feels are her top competitors in the industry right now, she feels Justice, Gap, and Abercom-bie Kids are the top three.

Orly loves everything related to art, especially Hollywood and Broadway. “There is no better medicine, then going to a movie theatre or enjoy-ing a Broadway show” she says, “for a couple of hours you are transported into a different world, with new characters, another time period, and

the ability to watch without having to make any decisions or thinking about anything, it’s just magical”, she adds. She enjoys music and danc-ing and one of her biggest hobbies is traveling. “I believe that every trip is like a restart on my in-ternal computer”, she says. She believes that the ability to breathe in New air as well as looking at a new architecture and culture, inspires her and gives her a pump of creativity. She graduated with her Associates of Science degree in fashion design one year later, in 2005. She then went back in 2009, pursuing her Bachelor’s of Science degree in fashion design and graduated in the Fall of 2011.

Since Graduating from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in the Fall, Orly currently resides in Aventura, FL. She has been working with America Tv channel 41 for 6 years now where she started as a wardrobe stylist and recently just became the Art Director. As Art Director, she is in charge of wardrobe, make-up, as well as set design. She is also starting a new job with Zumba as their wardrobe stylist. As well as still doing some freelance work with the Tv station. As for the future, Orly sees herself settling down and having a family of her own, while at the same time starting her very ownChildren’s wear company. She wants to finish where she left off after graduation. “I would love to keep working for a couple more years in the TV and styling industries, I love the rush of working long hours, short deadlines, moving around a lot, and having many projects at once” she says, “Later I can get to see it all play out on camera or magazines”, she adds.

By Marie StiernelofRe[think] Holiday Giving

The Green Queen [Community Supported Agriculture]If you’re not familiar with CSA, it’s when local farmers offer “shares” to the public. Shares may consist of a box of fruits, vegetables, or other farm products. Consum-ers purchase a share or “subscription,” in return will receive a box of seasonal pro-duce each week throughout the farming season. Bee Heaven Farm has 3 pick-up points in Broward County alone and $20 buys you half a share for 20 weeks.

For more information visit: http://www.localharvest.org/csa/GETTY IMAGES

As the winter holidays approach we’re bombarded with seasonal merchandise. As fashionista’s we’re more than prepared to hit the malls, department stores, and outlets to find that perfect gift. But consider the gift that keeps giving. Not just to people oceans away but people or animals in your own community that are in need this holiday season. Here are a few ideas for some of the people on your lists.

The Animal Lover [Humane Society of Broward County]Make a monetary donation in their name or donate items that immedi-ately benefit animals in need. Donate wash cloths that are used to dry off dogs after their bath. Or toys that will bring them comfort; big rubber chew toys that can be disinfected are perfect for dogs and ping pong balls will keep the cats entertained.

For a full list of items visit their site: https://www.humanebroward.com/php/wish.php

The Nurturer [Feeding South Florida]According to their website, “Out of every dollar donated, 98.4 cents goes directly to feeding the hungry.” So you and your nurturer won’t have to worry where the money goes. If you still prefer a more direct approach you can check their website for current food drives or call 954-518-1818. The most useful items are canned meats, rice and beans (dry or canned), canned fruits or vegetables, canned soup, and macaroni & cheese.

For more information visit their site: http://www.feedingsouthflorida.org/home.htm

The One Who Has Everything [Make-A-Wish Foundation Southern Florida Chapter]You know the type; they have ev-erything they need and if they don’t they’ve already bought it two seconds before you thought it. Help them make someone else’s dreams come true. Make-A-Wish Foundation makes it easy for you. You can buy their holi-day 2011 cards and giving certificates or giving insert to put inside. It also makes a nice, light weight, gift for family members out-of-state or over-seas.

To see these cards and certificates visit: http://events.sfla.wish.org/wishu-ponacard/

The Handyman [Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami]Not that women can’t fix things them-selves, or don’t volunteer their time for Habitat for Humanity, because many do. In fact 6 houses in the Miami-Dade area were built by all female builders. But for the rest of us who are lacking in the fix-it department and don’t know that awe-some girl, we have that go-to guy. It may be a friend, boyfriend, or dear old dad. Donate a gift in his name that’ll give the gift of home ownership.

Gabriel Dishaw, “Junk Metal” artist, sculptor, and shoe retailer, is turning Nike Dunk Shoes into “Junk Dunks”. He creates the actual replicas of the famous Nike sneakers. Inspired by his favorite kicks, he creates these creative shoe sculptures out of useless metal pieces and recycled circuit boards and holds them together by gluing and using bend- ing techniques. Dunks are not the only models he reproduces. For example, he just made a Nike Air Max sneakers, in which he spent 90 hours to make. He used materials from old computer parts like motherboards, an old typewriter cases, a USB port, power connectors, and even an oxygen mask from a 747 airplane. He gets his inspirations by observing different mechanical items, and tries to turn that into something that was not intended for that use. Ga..Ga.. For Fashion

Who doesn’t love Lady Gaga’s Fashion? I know that I do, so when Simon Mall came to the Art Institute Honors class with this amazing challenge of creat-ing a show centered on the fashion of Gaga we jumped at it immediately. We sent out a call to all of our AI designers to submit sketches of their most outra-geous Avant-garde garments. Fifteen sketches were selected then posted online for an open vote. After five thou-sand hits the top ten illustrations were picked to come to life.

The designers that were showcased were Ashley Amrich, Cilia Antoniou, AdanBravo & Ana Herrera, Denisse Martinez, Katherine McDermott, Ma-ria Nunez, Gina Palazzi, Sergio Silva, Elaine Timerman and Sam Velazquez. These artists blew us away with their cutting edge creation with features like film strips, spikes, mirrors and camera lenses.

In the end there could only be one. Elaine Timerman was the grand win-ner of a $500 American Express Simon gift card. Elaine’s electric design, which in my opinion gives a reminisce of mad max, was an incredible representation of the Art Institute.

Stellar Gravity’s Pull is Impossible to Resist

The winter holidays come every year at the same time and yet they always manage to pounce on me like a ninja attack. Every year I yank my hair out trying to figure out the perfect gift for all the stylish people on my list. I crave something unique that reflects each and every person’s style and personality but all I find are mass produced trinkets. And to top it all off, all of this has to be accomplished with the aid of my ever shrinking budget. I found myself at this crossroads in September, a full three months before the holi-days. As I was browsing through my Facebook and seriously considering re-gifting my Tupperware, I came across my college buddy Dee Troche-Pimentel’s new photo album. It was labeled Stellar Gravity jewelry. Each picture I clicked on showed a piece of jew-elry that was trendier and more fun than the next. Metal charms and glass baubles and engraved names. And the best part? No two pieces were the same. I read through Dee’s page and saw that not only was she making these amazing pieces herself, but she had also set up an Etsy shop and a website for them. An epiphany hit me like a meteor: I had found the perfect gift for absolutely everyone on my list. Diana Troche-Pimentel, or Dee, is an army wife with a thing for tattoos and a pen-chant for staring at people (a sport we often engaged in together in college). Aside from making and designing her own one of a kind jewelry pieces, she teaches jewelry making classes and is a full time mom. She lives in Korea with her husband Joey and their son Thomas. Since her husband had told her that she had made a hobby out of collecting hobbies, Dee began Stellar Gravity as a blog to showcase all of them. A year ago she attended a friend’s wedding where all the bridesmaids where wearing custom pieces of jewelry or-dered by the bride. Dee thought they were beautiful, until she found out what the bride had paid for them. Dee said: “I can do better! Once I was back home I took up a jewelry class and never looked back.” The rest is history written in the stars.

Stellar Gravity pieces are made of silver or nickel plated materials in a variety of metallic colors, such as gunmetal gray or antiqued silver, glass, and other materials. She uses techniques such as metal stamping to create her jewelry. What makes Stellar Grav-ity stand out from the crowded jewelry market is the fact that Dee never makes the same piece twice. As an added bonus, customers can create and customize their own pieces for an even more personalized look. If a piece breaks, send it back and Dee will repair it at no extra charge. The best part of all? Pieces range from $5.00 to $25.00 and shipping is always $1. Dee has a quirky, fun loving personality, so her pieces are quirky and fun. She names each Stellar Gravity piece depending on what inspired it. “Usually a phrase rolls around in my head and I’ll get it out by making jewelry,” is what she says when asked to cite the main source of her inspiration. I also suspect that the rich Korean culture that surrounds her has influenced her as well. Among her most popular pieces are necklaces inspired by Alice in Wonderland, a piece called “Time Flies,” and “My Heart is at ___.” This last one featured an anatomically cor-rect heart charm and the coordinates of a place of the customer’s choosing engraved on a tag. If you still doubt the one of a kind factor, Dee has no plans of going any bigger than her dining room table: “I like making each and every piece, and I like to guarantee the quality of what I’m selling, and I think my customers like that.” Stellar Gravity Jewelry is truly a galactic gem. The prices are crazily affordable for any budget, but the joy of giving a gift that reflects the receiver’s style and personality is priceless. This is why Stellar Gravity will keep us in its orbit for holidays to come.

Best New Trend: Self-Serve Frozen

YogurtStory by Raut Uzan

Page 39: Trend 954

If you’ve been just about anywhere in South Florida recently, you might have noticed the recent increase of frozen yogurt shops. You can find them at almost any kind of shop-ping strip from Las Olas Boulevard to Gulfstream Park. The self-serve yogurt might have ice cream shops running for their money; allowing customers to control the quantity, mixing flavors, and adding combi-nations of toppings to their treat. Perhaps you can blame it on the re-cession (its priced by weight), or a body conscious society (you add as much toppings as you want), but this trend is just getting started.
