Clue 3: The train travelling to Birmingham departed at 12:00.We can also cross the grid to show that we now know that the trains travelling to the other destinations do not depart at 12:00, and that the train to Birmingham doesn’t depart at any of the other times. (click)

Clue 3: The train travelling to Birmingham departed at 12:00.We now also know that the Edinburgh train doesn’t depart at 12:00. As we know that the Edinburgh train is red, we also know the red train doesn’t depart at 12.00 – so we can put a cross down the red column where it meets the 12:00 row. (click)

Clue 4: The blue train departed at 09:00.(click for clue 4) Based on the fourth clue, we can put a tick on the grid where the blue column and 09:00 row intersect. (click)

Clue 4: The blue train departed at 09:00.We can also put crosses on the grid to show that we now know that the trains that were not blue do not depart at 09:00 and that the blue train doesn’t depart at any of the other times. (click)

Clue 4: The blue train departed at 09:00.As the blue train departs at 09:00, we know that the red train cannot depart at 09:00 too. As we know that the red train is travelling to Edinburgh, this means that the Edinburgh train does not depart at 09:00. We can put a cross along the Edinburgh row where it meets the 09:00 column. (click)

Clue 4: The blue train departed at 09:00.We also know from the third clue that the Birmingham train departs at 12:00. As the blue train left at 09:00, this means that the Birmingham train cannot be blue. We can put a cross where the Birmingham row and blue column intersect. (click)

Clue 5: The number 35 green train didn’t depart at 10:00.(click for clue 5) Based on the first part of the fifth clue, we can tick the grid where the Green column and the number 35 row intersect. (click)

Clue 5: The number 35 green train didn’t depart at 10:00.We can also put crosses on the grid to show that we now know that the other colour trains are not number 35 and that the green train isn’t any other number. (click)

Clue 5: The number 35 green train didn’t depart at 10:00.If we look at the Green column we can see that the green train can’t depart at 09:00. As we know that the green train is number 35, we can also put a cross to show that the number 35 train does not depart at 09:00. (click)

Clue 5: The number 35 green train didn’t depart at 10:00.We also know that the Edinburgh train is red, not green - so it can’t be number 35. We can show this with a cross where the Edinburgh row and the number 35 column intersect. (click)

Clue 5: The number 35 green train didn’t depart at 10:00.Based on the second part of the fifth clue, we can first put a cross on the grid where the Green column and the 10:00 row intersect to show that the green train doesn’t depart at 10:00. (click)

Clue 5: The number 35 green train didn’t depart at 10:00.We can then put a cross on the grid where the number 35 row and the 10:00 column intersect to show that the number 35 train doesn’t depart at 10:00. (click)

Clue 6: The train travelling to Sheffield is number 24.(click for clue 6) Based on the sixth clue, we can put a tick on the grid where the Sheffield row intersects with the number 24 column. (click)

Clue 6: The train travelling to Sheffield is number 24.We can also put crosses on the grid to show that we now know that the trains travelling to the other destinations cannot be number 24 and that the train to Sheffield cannot be any other number. (click)

Clue 6: The train travelling to Sheffield is number 24.If we look at the number 24 row, we can see that the green train is not number 24. We can now also put a cross to show that the green train isn’t going to Sheffield. (click)

Clue 6: The train travelling to Sheffield is number 24.If we look at the Sheffield row, we can see that the red train isn’t going to Sheffield. We can cross the grid to show that the red train isn’t number 24. (click)

Clue 6: The train travelling to Sheffield is number 24.Before we look at the next clue, our grid has revealed an extra clue!

If we look at the Red column, we can see that it can only be number 18. We can tick the grid to show this; we can also put crosses along the number 18 row to show that none of the trains of different colours can be number 18. (click)

Clue 6: The train travelling to Sheffield is number 24.We also know that the red train is travelling to Edinburgh – so we now know that the Edinburgh train is number 18. We can put a tick in the number 18 column to show this and put crosses in the other destinations in the number 18 column to show that the number 18 train is not going to any of these other places. (click)

Clue 6: The train travelling to Sheffield is number 24.We know that the red train is number 18, and we also know that the red train does not depart at 09:00 or 12:00. This means that the number 18 train does not depart at these times. We can put crosses along the number 18 row to show this. (click)

Clue 7: The number 18 train departed at 11:00.(click for clue 7) Based on the seventh clue, we can put a tick on the grid where the number 18 row intersects with the 11:00 column. (click)

Clue 7: The number 18 train departed at 11:00.We can also put crosses on the grid to show that we now know that the number 18 train does not depart at any other time and that none of the trains with other numbers depart at 11:00. (click)

Clue 7: The number 18 train departed at 11:00.We already know that the number 18 train is red and travelling to Edinburgh, and we now know that it departs at 11:00. To show this on the grid, we can put a tick where the Red column intersects with the 11:00 row, and a tick on the Edinburgh row where it intersects with the 11:00 column. We can cross off the other options. (click)

Let’s check if we have now recorded enough information on our grid to solve the problem!

If we look at the Green column, we can see that the only departure time the green train can have is 12:00. We can tick the grid to show this. We can also put crosses to show that none of the differently coloured trains depart at 12:00. (click)

We already know that the train that departs at 12:00 is travelling to Birmingham. Now we know that this Birmingham train is green. We can fill in the grid to show this. (click)

Page 6: Tremendous Train Journeys · Clue 2: The train travelling to Liverpool isn’t brown. (click for clue 2) Based on the second clue, we can cross the box where the Liverpool row and

We also know that the green train, which we now know departs at 12:00, is number 35. We can tick and cross the grid along the 12:00 column to show this. (click)

We now know that the Birmingham train is number 35. (click) We have now found all the information for the Birmingham train.

Let’s look at the Liverpool train. We can see on the Liverpool row that the only colour it can be is blue. We can tick the grid to show this and put crosses to show that none of the trains going to other destinations are blue. (click)

If we look at the Sheffield row, we can see that brown is the only possible remaining colour for the Sheffield train. We can tick the grid to show this. (click)

We already know from the grid that the Sheffield train is number 24 – so we now know that the brown train is also number 24 and that it can’t be any other number. We can tick and cross the grid to show this. (click)

In the number 40 row, we can see that blue is the only possible remaining option for the number 40 train. We can fill the grid in to show this. (click)

We already know that the blue train’s departure time is 09:00. As we now know that the blue train is number 40, we can tick the grid to show that the number 40 train departs at 09:00. We can also cross the grid to show that it does not depart at 10:00. (click)

Page 7: Tremendous Train Journeys · Clue 2: The train travelling to Liverpool isn’t brown. (click for clue 2) Based on the second clue, we can cross the box where the Liverpool row and

If we look at the Liverpool row, we can see that number 40 is the only possible remaining options for the Liverpool train. We can tick the grid to show this. (click)

We already know that the number 40 train’s departure time is 09:00. As we now know that the number 40 train is going to Liverpool, we can tick the grid to show that the Liverpool train is departing at 09:00. We can then cross off the other times that the train might have departed. (click)

As we have ruled out all the other options, we now know that the train to Sheffield departs at 10:00. (click)

We can now fill in the remaining boxes in the grid. (click)
