Trelleborg Marine Systems has addressed theshortcomings of conventional offshore GPS dockingaid systems by developing a specialised OffshoreMooring and Docking System (OMADS) that useshighly-accurate Real-time Kinematic (RTK) GPS

technology. RTK can provide a relative positionaccuracy of 2.0 cm.

OMADS consists of two major components: apermanent unit for the primary vessel and a portablecarry-on-board (COB) for the secondary vessel. Theprimary vessel unit can be a rack-mounted multi-GPS/telemetry unit with the capability of position andattitude via RTK GPS, or a single receiver/telemetryunit, where the vessels own gyro or IMU providesthe attitude indication. Survey-quality multi frequencyantennas are installed at pre-determined locationsaround the superstructure.

The primary vessel communicates with the secondaryvessel system via a UHF telemetry link which has arange of many nautical miles.

The COB is taken onboard the secondary vesseland set up before the approach begins. It consistsof a self-contained, battery-powered system ttedwith dual RTK GPS receivers/antennas and UHFtelemetry. It has Wi-Fi 802.11g for communications

with the laptop that is used to present the approachto the pilot or master. An integrated bre-optic, highresolution gyro provides accurate rate of turn inaddition to the heading and position calculated by theGPS system.

    Offshore mooring and docking system

An optional handheld display is available for use onthe vessel wing during docking.

During the approach and docking, the OMADSsoftware interprets the relative position informationfrom the RTK GPS and displays it on both theprimary and secondary vessel units in 2D or 3Drepresentation, and as a numeric display. Thisenables the pilot or master to evaluate the progress

of the manoeuvre and make adjustments accordingly.

3D representation provides better denition of thevessels relative positions.

Hawser load monitoring is especially critical whenvessels are moored via a single-point mooring (SPM)arrangement to a CALM buoy or similar offshoreloading arrangement. Trelleborg Marine Systemsmanufactures load monitoring systems to alert vessel

masters in the event the hawser tension becomestoo high or too low, enabling them to make a decisionabout the safety of the mooring.

Load cells installed in one or more of the buoyconnector-plate pins provide real-time measurements.Warnings of low, near high or high-high loads aregiven via a light and siren installed on the buoy and/or through telemetry to remote monitors. This may bea portable monitor on the vessel or a base stationmonitor at the facility. The system can be conguredfor either single- or dual-leg hawsers and may beretro-tted to an existing assembly.

Other options that can be integrated with the SPMload monitoring systems include:

    Navigational aid operation and status

    Product pressure and ow monitoring

GPS relative positioning between the vessel and

    the buoy

    SPM load monitoring system

    Buoy-mounted Equipment

Load cell: installed in the tri-plate or pad eye, tsmost styles of new and existing CALM buoys.

Controller: contains the microprocessor, load cellinterface, data logger and telemetry equipment. Thecontroller is located on the deck within an explosion-proof enclosure and double sealed within an outerstainless steel enclosure that ensures the controlleris completely protected against the harsh environment

Telemetry: Trelleborg telemetry systems have areputation for reliability spanning 20 years. Hawser

loads and alarms are transmitted over telemetry inreal-time to portable pagers on the vessel or xedworkstations onshore. The telemetry is UHF bandand incorporates inputs for the load cells, batterymonitoring and options such as line pressure, navigation beacon photocell, anenometers andtemperature and humidity sensors.

Power supply: to operate the buoy equipment is fromdeep-cycle batteries, which may be charged fromoptional solar panels. The power is controlled by amicroprocessor to enable automatic load-sheddingand temperature compensation and to monitor thecharge status. The base station can interrogate thepower status remotely.

Fenders and fender deploymentAs part of the complete offshore mooring package,Trelleborg Marine Systems supplies both pneumaticand foam-lled fenders and a davit system system fordeployment and storage. Fenders are used to provideseparation between vessels moored ship-to-ship

(STS) and to protect against impact when mooringand unmooring. Trelleborg can supply primary andsecondary fenders of both the pneumatic and foam-lled types.

    Trelleborg Pneumatic Fenders

Leveraging over 100 years of experience in rubbertechnology, Trelleborg produces pneumatic fenders ofthe highest quality. Tough and resilient, they exert verylow pressure on the vessels hulls whilst maintaininglarge clearances in STS mooring. They are made inboth standard and high-pressure types in a wide rangeof sizes with the larger sizes most commonly ttedwith a chain tyre net for increased protection.

    SeaCushion Foam-lled Fenders

SeaCushion fenders are designed for hard work. Thesuperior grade of foam core, extra-tough skin andchain tyre net make them the most rugged oatingfender on the market. SeaCushions are thereforeperfect for demanding operations such as open-waterSTS mooring, offshore structures, shipyards andmilitary terminals. Foam-lled fenders will not deateor burst, which makes them virtually unsinkable, andabsolutely reliable. With hull pressures and reactionpressures less than that of pneumatic fenders,SeaCushions are also one of the most efcientfenders available.

    Fender Deployment System

Trelleborgs fender deployment system(FDS) is a complete system to deploy, retrieve and store fenders for usein ship-to-ship (STS) mooring

applications. The system hasbeen designed to suit either theTrelleborg pneumatic fenders orTrelleborg Sea Cushion foam-lledfenders.

The FDS has high levels of structural and electro-mechanical reliablity for the new generation ofFPSO and FLNG vessels. A typical system mayinclude four to six primary fender davits, two ormore secondary fender davits, a local davit controlconsole and an electro-hydraulic power unit to

provide system pressure and owto operate davits individually or

simultaneously. Davits canbe operated individuallyor simultaneously andan optional heavecompensation systemis available. The FDS iscompact enough to be

installed between the LNGtanks and the vessel hull.

Trelleborg Marine Systems developed both vertical and horizontalhawser winches in response to demand for a better systemof handling tandem mooring hawsers. This innovative solutiondelivers new efciencies for FSO operators. It provides a method ofdeploying, retrieving and storing the hawser chafe chain assembly

and reduces hawser damage since the hawser is stored on thewinch rather than left oating in the sea or stored loosely on thedeck.

    Vertical Hawser Retrieval Winch

Deployment time is reduced because the winch has an integratedquick release hawser hook, so the hawser is always connected. Thehawser is paid out and connected to the shuttle vessel withoutany need to handle the chafe chain at the F(P)SO. The verticalformat has a smaller deck footprint than equivalent horizontalwinches and minimal strengthening is needed for theunit to be installed.

    A typical installation would include:

Winch with built-in hawser guide rail

Local control console with joystick controller

    Hydraulic power pack

Remote display unit for displaying load alarms,

hook status and load monitoring, and for triggeringthe emergency release function

    Horizontal Retrieval Winches

Trelleborg manufactures two types of horizontal winch:single-drum and sectional-drum. On both, the hawserhook is installed on an independent mounting, but isdesigned to work with the winch to provide a completesolution for deploying and securing the mooring.

With a single-drum winch, the chafe chains and chainbuoy are stored outboard of the chock. By attachingthe pick-up rope half way along the hawser, the hawsercan be doubled over and winched on board. The chainand buoy are left outboard and ready for the nexthawser deployment.

Sectional drum winches are supplied with a three- orfour-section drum that provides separate storage forthe chafe chains, hawser and pick-up rope.
