Premier Grade Match Report

Old Collegians 40 vs Pt Adelaide 10

Tries: Jack Campion, Fraser Murison, Deane Phillips, Tim Pickerill (3)Conversions: Will Sadler (5)Best Players: Jack Campion, Riady Perdana, Andrew Burgess

Old Colls established the platform for the win by improving on doing simple things well, securing possession from dominant set piece play in the forwards and in open play making smart decision about when to offload and when to take contact with support. Port Adelaide had a strong forward pack that did its best to grind down and slow the game, but for the most part we were able to shift the rucks and point of engagement around the field as phases pro-gressed, so that we had the players in place to quickly recycle the rucks and pressure the defensive line. Well organised and aggressive defence also kept Port in check and limited the impact of their advances.

We made good use of early possession from mid field, where quick cleanouts and the speed and width of passing created gaps that Campion was able to exploit to break through and score the first try. Old Colls made better use of its possession with the forwards hunting together, so when Perdana made a breakthrough from half way Hyam was in support to carry on and was dragged down just before the try line, pushing the ball back for Pickerill to gather and dot down. Port came back with a penalty goal so Old Colls had to re-set and work back into Port Territory, where af-ter several phases covering one side of the field to the other, Port were stretched and Murison broke through a ruck to score a third try before the break.

A lapse in discipline early in the second half gifted several penalties to Port who took full advantage, pushing forward into our 22 and then mauling from a line out over the try line to score and keep in touch at 19 to 10. Eventually Old Colls tightened up and held on to the ball, securing our lineout just inside Port territory for the backs to spread to the other side of the field, where Hopkinson was dragged down in the corner almost on the try line and Phillips spotted the metre of undefended blindside to dive over and score from halfback.

The backs consolidated their control of the midfield as Sadler, Burgess and Macklin relentlessly challenged the Port centres on attack and pushed them back in defence. Towards the end of the half Sadler broke through and linked up with Bartlett who made it into the 22 before offloading to Pickerill, again in support, to score. The work of our reserves helped to increase the pressure in the last 10 minutes and the team drove back into the red-zone, only to be held up over the line. On the 5m line our scrum pushed Port back into their own in-goal, and from the resulting re-set the backs took it to the opposite side where Pickerill, again in the right place to be involved, scored his third try to finish the game.

Old Collegians 36 vs Pt Adelaide 12

OC received the kick-off and immediately set the scene with a strong busting run by Tim Chew into the 22. Three quick phases from the contact saw Peter Cross score in the corner with the conversion by Mitch Sallis. OC continued their early dominance with strong runs by Ben Blackall, Alex Murphy and Stuart Robertson.

Port came back gaining field position with a strong following breeze setting up a try in the corner. OC bounced back via several backline phases putting Jack Darby over in the corner. A wonderful delayed pass by James Denley put Stuart Robertson through a gap to an open try line taking the score to 17-5. Another strong, crisp passing backline move put Jack Darby in for a second try in the corner.

Early in the second half a Port Adelaide clearing kick was taken by a charging flanker, Tristan Beasley who advanced the ball to within 15 metres of the try line followed by an offload to Alex Murphy for a try adjacent to the posts. Mitch Sallis made the score. From the restart Karl Edgar made an explosive run in the centre to score under the posts. Port defended strongly as OC picked and drove several phases from 5 metres out in front of the posts. A mistimed pass across the line saw Port intercept for a 70 metre run to score under the posts at the other end.

Try saving defence by Alex Murphy as well as bursting runs downfield, complimented Ben Blackall’s powerful charge. Peter Cross and Stuart Robertson made the most of James Denley’s sharp clearances to set the backs moving.

Overall, good skills and teamwork again resulted in a pleasing performance to set the team up for University next week.

Reserve Old Collegians 17 def North Torrens 14 Grade Match Report

Third XV Report

Tries: Mike Otty; Stuart FreebairnConvs: Nic Delany; Mike OttyPenalty: Nic Delany

Best on Ground: Jarrod Cole; Lenny Eilers; Derek Lewis

What a transformation! In the past few years North Torrens have found it difficult to prevent a score blow-out when we play them. Not today.

From the whistle, it was obvious the new look team meant business and knew how to go about it. They started strongly with forwards who were quick to and aggressive at the breakdown, feeding some fast and slippery backs. So much so that for the first ten minutes we were scrambling without much structure. Torrens kept hammering us and soon opened a hole through which they scored.

After the initial onslaught we settled and some structure started to emerge and we managed to work the ball into their 22. Here we applied pressure and were awarded a penalty. We opt for a scrum, win clean ball for Mike Ottywho finds the undefended line before him. Nick Delany converts.

Torrens effectiveness at the the breakdown is winning them plenty of ball, but we are dominating the scrums with Robbie winning several tight-heads, which helps us balance posession. Shortly before half time we are workingthe ball toward their 22 when they gain posession and counter-attack running through to score on their right wing. OC 7, NT 14 at the break.

We show better composure as the second half gets under way and manage to work the ball deep into Torrens ter-ritory where we are awarded several penalties. Torrens defence is impressive and repels many of our snipes atthe line. Rushing defense snuffs out our attempts to get the ball wide. Eventually we do get the ball to a fast run-ning Stuart Freebairn on our right wing and he scores in the corner. Otty slots the conversion from wide- without the aid of a tee. Scores are even with about 20 to go.

Again we work the ball close and Rob Porteous drives low toward the line for what looked like a try. Adjudged knock-on after lengthy consultation with the assistant Ref - Robbie later confirming it was just short.Although we have held Torrens deep in their territory for most of the half, their defense prevents our conversion of the pressure we are applying. On the side we are nervous as Torrens have shown they can counter attackeffectively. With moments to go we are awarded a penalty in front which is converted by Nic Delany followed by the full time whistle - much to the relief of coach and manager.

This game heralded some firsts:Jim Francis played his first game with dad Paull.Joel Pepper showing great promise in his first senior game First year playerStuart Freebairn scoring his first try The first senior game in which Kylehas not scored

We have always enjoyed the hospitality shown by Nth Torrens after the game, this week we were just as warmly welcomed by a new younger enthusiastic and rightly proud group. We look forward to returning the hospitality later in the season.

U18’s Match ReportOld Collegians 66 v Souths 12

Tries: Austin Teagle (4), Jimmy Francis, Ben Gough, Ben Viljoen, Kyle Fleetwood-Pieper (2), Charlie Pickford Conversions: Ben Viljoen (8)

The day was overcast, warm and the grass lush out at Dry Creek. South’s were lacking in numbers and started the game with 12. We were also missing players (Awin Mathews & Rhys Frew injured, Joshua Smith not well, Ollie Horne interstate etc.) and started with only 14. Harshad Bilimoria enjoying his first run-on start for the season on one wing and Dougie Pratt playing his first match for the season, started on the other wing.To their credit, South’s contested scrums and brought energy to the contact. OC seemed confident of their extra numbers and lacked structure, as individuals looked for gaps that were not always there in broken play. It only took 5 minutes for Dougie Pratt to run blind off a ruck, pass wide to Austin Teagle and a 70m try resulted. Ben Viljoen converted. For Austin Teagle, the passing is put away and it is tackle breaking time for the rest of the match. Our scrum was dominant and our lineout improving. The backs showed good pace and hands and from scrappy ball in loose play. The match slowed into an arm wrestle with stout defence by South’s. Their lack of numbers saw South’s put in a great defensive effort and we did not maintain our structures enough to make the gaps bigger or more frequent. First up tackles continued to be on or behind the advantage line. 20 mins in Austin Teagle intercepted and was away again for a 50m try. From then on the gates open – Ben Viljoen try and conversion. Ben Gough try and conversion. Ditto Charlie Pickford and conversion. While the scoreboard was looking good, South’s made a couple of raids into our 22 from restarts. The forwards allowed South’s chasers to get a hand on the ball from the kick and they made the most of these opportunities. We were saved on two occasions by South’s poor rucking skills giving us relieving penalties inside our defensive 22 as we scrambled to reorganise. Approaching half time, several U16’s arrived from Port to give us some reserves. Alfie Malcolm came on just before half time putting us up to 15.

Half time score: Old Collegians 45 v Souths 0.

Over the course of the second half we begin using our bench to give players a rest. George Campbell subbed off, Charlie Pickford off, Tom Copson (16s) - his first sub on for the 18s. OC kept up the scoring pressure; Kyle Fleetwood-Pieper over at 10 in, and Jimmy Francis in 5 later. (Two hands on the ball please!). Good scaveng-ing from Dougie Pratt to gain several turnovers. Kyle Fleetwood-Pieper off (sub for 3s) and Charlie Pickford back on. Bailey Clements off (sub for 3s), George Campbell back on and Ben Hower to hooker. Jimmy Francis off (sub for 3s).

At the back end of the second half, Souths picked up a couple of tries. Continuous attacking pressure combined with our positional changes and fatigue to let them in. The first, a step in and out and over. The second, a chip and chase into vacant space behind the defensive line – no conversion. Colls replied with a try at the death with Austin who? :-) for number 4!

Looking back Easy win to Coll’s. A lack of concentration and fo-cus on the basics allowed the game to fall into a scrappy match. Introducing new players into team exposed weaknesses in our defensive structure and communication.

The match dropped in intensity and style from pre-vious weeks. We were penalised for poor technique and decision making in the contact zone (entering from the side, hands in the ruck, not roll-ing away, not releasing the player or the ball).

Our penalty count was typical for the year so far, but will need to improve to challenge for the finals.

16s—Match Reports 16s—Match RepOld Collegians 46 v Vikings 0

Tries: Magnus Illman (3), James Du Preez (2), Harrison Cole, James Rees, Seaton SiegfriedConversions: Luke Seifert (3)

On a windless, unseasonal warm day we turn up to Port Adelaide’s Riverside Oval with mixed emotions. Pleased to welcome Tom Copson back in the mix following his thumb injury but on a bit of a downer that the injury curse has struck Edwin Dodd who is out for the season. Recuperate well Ed and we look forward to your return in 2017.

When we saw the size of their lads it lead us to also question the validity of their birth certificates but ho-hum we said nothing and got on with the job. After our usual butchering of the kick-off (surely it can’t be that hard fellas) our blokes seemed to realise that the best ploy was spin the ball and keep their lumbering pack moving. Our pack also demonstrated that technique beats size in the scrum and we tortured their front row allowing James Du Preez to peel off and put us 5 up.

Following a certain try saving tackle by Jasper Carter (on the big angry loose Prop) Magnus “Maggie” Illman put us 10 up with a typical mazy run. James Du Preez then notched his 2nd following a great take by Alfie Malcolm in the line-out and a fantastic team effort rolling maul. They were looking ragged but keen for a battle however Harrison Cole got the 4th under the posts after sustained College pressure. The 5th came from James Rees after running great lines and showing outstanding support play. H/T was comfortable at 29-0 but our coaches were still disap-pointed with our lads for allowing The Vikings to drag our game down.

The Vikings must have received a right bollocking as they started the 2nd half taking it to us only to meet some re-sistance by great Collegian tackling. None surpassed Seaton Siegfried who lifted their lad, drove him back a few metres, and put him on the ground, in true Richie McCaw fashion. It was tackle of the season, probably many a season and as reward the referee reached into his pocket and produced a yellow. Wow, after some of their she-nanigans going un-punished it seems harsh. Some teams might crumble but it seemed to galvanise our blokes who tackled like demons, put their bodies on the line (with Jack Richards getting a huge belt to the head) and we took control again.

3 more tries followed – Magnus Illman got his 2nd, followed by a very satisfying one by the aggrieved Seaton Siegfried. Then Magnus was on hand to finish spectacularly from 30 metres following some great pod work and phase after phase by our forwards. Whilst Maggie gets the plaudits it was an outstanding team try mixing forward and back play with superb support and recycling the ball effectively.

Enjoy the bye this coming Saturday although still get yourselves out to training fellas. The Vikings have all the attributes to give you a game but your superior technique and fitness was the difference. Our next game is the old enemy Burnside, under our new lights on Friday 27th May at 19:45 hrs.

Once again many thanks to the photographers Bec Killick, Nigel Young (who must get the credit for this week’s effort of a marauding Tyler) and Tom Dodd.

Also massive appreciation to the folks who have helped with the kit washing so far this season.

Oh me lads, you should have seen us coming….16s—Match Reports

U14’s Match ReportOld Collegians 26 v Vikings 5

Tries: Lochie Edwards, Willem Pienaar, Lefatu Egglestone (2)Conversions: Tane Pardoe (2), Carl Arnold (1)

It was again another surprisingly warm day for round 4 of the 2016 season where the Old Collegians U14’s took on the might of the Western District Vikings. Old Colls took the kick to start play and were soon showing the style of play that produced the win last week. After a period of well structured play, play was halted by a Viking penalty. Old Colls won the subsequent scrum and with Max Linton breaking away, taking the ball forward, then to Lochie Edwards and then to Willem Pienaar who finished it off with a well fought try. This was converted by Tane Pardoe. This was a game for all to watch and enjoy. There were several other periods of some very promising phases of play that produced 3 more tries. The resulting tries converted by Tane Pardoe and one by Carl Arnold. Vikings produced a minor comeback in the last portion of the first half by landing a controversial try, which wasn’t converted. The second half started again with the Old Colls lads put-ting the pressure on Vikings. The ball was now close to the Old Colls try line however Old Colls had knocked on. The eventuating scrum had a Viking collapse and a player injured. The referee decided to end the game.

Well done to all as it was another consistent team effort. Some strong runs by Lefatu Egglestone who ran home with two tries and an unexpected try by Lochie Edwards.

What an awesome game!

We decided this game to trial players in differ-ent positions and WOW were we glad we did. We have discovered some talent and skills be-yond what we thought we already had.Keagan Wallace played at scrum half and he played like he had been doing it his whole life. Absolutely incredible to watch. Wellington Grace had another cracker of a game on the wing running in another try. Xanib Bleakley had some very impressive runs with his signa-ture side stepping. Max Gordon and Jake Bran-son both putting in some very strong runs. Jack Norris improving every game and now I think starting to realise his own potential. The senior players were also shifted around and all adjusted superbly to new positions. Meg Richards had a few very good runs and Ryan Barlow tackling like a king. He also captained the side fantastically to bring us home with a 55-5 point victory.

Well done to Coach Colin for some very clever team planning and the Old Collegians players who helped out the Vikings team to up their numbers. Look forward to seeing everybody at training.

U10’s Match Report

Old Collegians v Vikings

A trip to Port Adelaide to take on the Western District Vikings completed our two week stint away from last weekend, and whilst we arrived ready and raring to go, it seemed that more than a few of the Vikings didn't get the memo about a 8:00am kickoff. As such, a late start looked likely until the coaches came to an arrangement to get the game going with our help.

The game was of an excellent standard with Nick Robertson, Toby Wilson and Alex Punshon driving the ball forward at every opportunity whilst Mia Aguiar, Saxon Talbot Price and Hudson Lindow defended stoutly. Line breaks were rare and tries hard to come by for both teams as the defences held sway. Eventually Saxon crossed the line due to some great work by Jack Davies and Daniel Boulden but the highlight of the first half had to be Lucy Brennan's crunching tackle and the determination showed by Quillien Bleakley.

Round 4 of the 2016 season saw us heading down to Port Adelaide RUFC, Riverside Oval in perfect weather conditions. Twenty eight excited Old Collegians U10’s turned up on the morning to take on the Western District Vikings team. It was exciting to see the Vikings field a full complement of 12 players and the game was played in good spirit.

The OC Blue team took to the field first and played with focus and determination. The ball was well distributed between our strong forwards who took it up hard and straight and then passed it to the backs that got it through the hands quickly. This saw our fast backline running in several tries as the gaps opened up. Our support play has also been the best we’ve seen to date. The OC Blue team let the Vikings through to score only once. It is particularly exciting for our coaching group to see that not only our attacking part of the game is improving but also our tackling skills keep improving every week, which helps us to turn over the ball and regain possession more often.

OC Red took to the field next and had to work hard before we managed to break through the Vikings defence – we had a number of our regular forwards in the Red team not available this week but towards the second half of the game our constant effort in attack and our strong running and pace in the backs ended up being too much for the Vikings team to withstand. The gaps started opening and we saw several beautiful tries scored. One of the highlights of the Red team’s game was the strong support running of our forwards to keep up with the backs cutting through the opposition’s line of defence – this paid off particularly well for Salvy Costanzo who scored a beautiful try.

Saturday was not only one of those days were you could see that the OC players were thoroughly enjoying their rugby and that they wished the games wouldn’t end, but it was also a good example of rugby being a sport where it is not about who scores the try but rather how the team works together, to allow a team mate to score.

Thank you to Mark Pickard who refereed our U10s games for us!

U7’s Match Report

Old Collegians v Vikings

On a sunny day at the Port Adelaide Rugby Club, 20 Old Collegians U7s players turned up with smiles on their faces ready to run through the dew laden grass and take on a Western Districts Vikings side.

Vikings had anticipated a large Old Collegians contin-gent and had kindly set up two pitches. As has become customary, the playing group was split up in Old Colle-gians Blue and Red teams, with each team playing half the game and the non-playing team working on their skills in a scratch match.

OC Blue started off and there was a nice early run from Harry Menz with some strong forward running from Alex Smitham coming up against some good defensive work from the Vikings. There was good defence from Jimmy Ryan and James Hicks. Alex Smitham kept run-

ning at the Vikings and was rewarded with a lovely try and he also came close once more but was just diverted into touch near the line. Old Collegians defence remained very strong throughout the half.

OC Red, warmed up and keen to go after their scratch match, set about their business and there was some accurate and spirited defence from Noah Burton-Howard, Manuel Docampo and Caleb Johnson. Myles Kidd provided an excel-lent turnover and Old Collegians were on the attack.Rhys McCarthy got in on the act and scored two lovely tries, the last with a side step off of his right foot that was wor-thy of Shane Williams (Welsh rugby union player) and Manuel Docampo continued his try-scoring form, bagging an-other one.

The recipients of Achievement Awards this week were Alex Smitham for his great forward running, Cooper Ryanfor his untiring defensive work, Noah Burton-Howard for spirited defence and Hamish Kerr-Grant for never stop-ping running and providing an awesome diving tackle, much to the delight of the Old Colls supporters. However, for sheer pace, an eye for the try line and that lovely try the Coach Award goes to Rhys McCarthy. Well done Rhys!

There was great improvement shown by all the players once more and the passing has improved since last week. Many thanks go out to the coaches and volunteers and we'll see you all at training.

Under 8’s Match Report- Continued

The second half pretty much followed the pattern of the first. Long periods of defensive dominance before a line break and clean passing set up tries for both sides. Edward List and Thomas King were the dominant playmakers on the ground whilst Jackson Brady and Azalie Czeglik provided the attacking flair and dash to help set up our second half tries.

Both teams played with great spirit, teamwork and respect for each other and the referee. Well done.
