tHE city of sEvEn HiLLs

LEgEndRome was founded in 753BC by its first king, Romulus. Roman legend says that Romulus had a twin brother called Remus. As babies they were left alone when a she-wolf found and raised them. When they grew up, Romulus fought and killed Remus and built the city of Rome on seven hills.

armyRoman Empire was greatly known for its very disciplined military. Roman

military had two main branches and armies. They were groups of only Roman people and others who were non from the city.

ampHitHEatErsThe amphitheater is a unique Roman structure used for gladiator fights and chariot races etc. About 230 amphitheaters existed throughout the Roman Empire and some could hold as many as 60,000 viewers. The Colloseum in Rome is the largest

amphitheater in the world.

arcHitEcturEEarly Roman architecture was largely influenced by Greek architecture. However the Romans put their own style and ideas in their buildings. The aqueduct is an special creation of the Roman architects. Aqueducts were large and long water bridges that helped to bring water from distant natural water supplies into the cities.

govErnmEntRome has witnessed many political changes. At its earliest stage Rome was republic. The important decisions of running the empire was taken by the Senate of 300 people. These people were elected by the citizens to take the decisions for them. Over the time Rome came under the imperial rule which means ruled by emperors and the Senate became unimportant.

The Romans belonged to modern day Italy and ruled europe and north africa. They help change much of the philosophies, architecture and government system today.

have you heard of the red brick memorial in Rayerbazar? Do you know why it was built?

A large number of teachers, doctors, engineers, poets and writers were killed by Pakistani armies and their local partners, Al-Badr and Al-Shams, during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. Moreover, just two days before Pakistani army surrendered, over 200 of the smartest people of East Pakistan, today’s Bangladesh, were killed on December 14. Hence, it was built to honour those smart people. The memorial was designed by architect Farid U Ahmed and Jami Al Shafi.
