Tree Giveaway Information Tree Education Presentation Schedule In celebration of Arbor Day, we are giving away one, free tree per Winter Springs household. To be eligible to receive a free tree you must: Be a Winter Springs resident. Attend at least one education presentation at Explore Outdoors. Sign up to receive your tree after the presentation. The city will deliver trees to Winter Springs res- idents by the end of April. The trees available to choose from are as follows: Camellias (7 gal) Yellow Tab (15 gal) Crepe Myrtle (15 gal) Live Oak (15 gal) Red Maple (15 gal) Yaupon Holly (15 gal) Right Tree - Right Place 12:15 p.m. - 12:45 p.m. Mary Edwards, Registered Consulting Arborist The success of proper tree development is choosing the right species for the right location. This talk dis- cusses different growth habits, sunlight requirements, & maturity sizes for the most common species used in Central FL. Do Trees Need Care 12:45 p.m. - 1:15 p.m. Mary Edwards, Registered Consulting Arborist This talk covers the health, vigor, & safety of trees in an Urban Environment. Learn if trees add property value, how to prepare for storms, how to manage structur- al defects, & the different types of pruning for young trees, mid-life, & mature older trees. Environmentally Friendly Fertilization of Landscape Plants in Florida 1:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Terrence Fullerton, Seminole County Fertilizer Educator The sandy soils of FL are infertile compared to the rest of the US. This talk describes some of the nutritional prob- lems in our soils & describes practical, environmentally sound fertilization practices that produce healthy land- scapes under our conditions. Explore Your Trees 2:45 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. Neta Villalobos-Bell, Nature Interpreter What’s in your tree? Certain trees attract beneficial in- sects such as moths, butterflies, & beetles. Learn what type of insects are in your backyard by exploring your trees. Edible Trees 3:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Don Philpot, Seminole Master Gardener, Lead Instructor of Florida Master Naturalist Program, Wekiva Wilderness Trust Secretary, & Executive Director of FL State Parks Foundation Central FL has at least 1,700 plants that are edible or have medicinal uses. Many of these trees are com- monly found in our yards and local parks. This talk discusses the trees & what their culinary & medicinal uses are. Should You Prune It? 4:15 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. Kaydie McCormick, UF/IFAS Residential Horticulture Master Gardener Coordinator Learn the basics of structural tree pruning for the life of a tree. This talk discusses how to cut, when to cut, & when you should call in a professional arborist. Don’t forget to sign up for a free tree after class!
