In 2009 Railway Town Public School conducted a Quality of School Life survey. As a result it was identified that Years 5-6 girls were disengaged from school life. The Broken Hill University of Rural Health were approached by school representatives to work in collaboration on designing a program to support and build career aspirations.
The aim of the TREC program is to make links between school and life after school including the world of work. The first activity included “A Life In A Day” which consisted of the girls experiencing a session in woodwork at Broken Hill High School, a tour of the hospital and a clinical session at the University Department of Rural Health.
The second activity involved interviewing and photographing women working in the community. A total of 12 women were chosen and interviewed by the girls from the following departments: Art, Business, Community, Council, Education, Health, Indigenous, Legal, Parks/Wildlife, Police and Community Youth and Sport/Recreation. The interviews gave the girls an insight into different career options.
The final activity concludes with the production and promotion of this calendar. The girls have been consulted in the process of developing it, including design, marketing, promotion, distribution and sales.
It is envisioned that linked between the school and the wider community will be established to support the girls in furthering their education and aspirations.

There are numerous mediums that an artist can use to express their interpretation of the landscape, life, our loves and hates, and the world we live in.
Initially I began drawing; I had a love of drawing as a child. Little did I know that I began on a road to discovery, studying pen and ink, watercolour, pastels, acrylics and oils through Tafe courses and University correspondence eventually establishing my career as a mixed media Artist specialising in etchings. I enjoy using earth, ochres and found objects to achieve desired effects.
My creative formula involves techniques that engage the viewer to interpret the story behind the subject. My style is contemporary and modern but often reflects the environment and history of my surrounds. I work from my studio in Broken Hill and live between my desert home and the sea air of Yorke Peninsula South Australia.
