“The idea sounds like it would appeal well to its target audience, but you should be careful that it isn’t just the style of the video which is appealing. Try to think of it as a filmed piece first, and consider if it would be as effective without the influence of the animation.”

“I like the palettes that you have identified on your moodboard- they are colourful enough to look interesting yet not overpower the pencil pieces.”

“The execution is going to be complex- I would consider padding it out with filmed footage so that you have enough time to focus of the more time consuming hand drawn elements.”

“ The standard of your drawing skills will need to be extremely high to produce and effective animation. This is something to be weary of- you should perhaps produce some test sheets for pose and movement to make sure you have a good grasp of these skills.”

“It’s important that you ensure that the animation is well timed with the music- this is what makes other animated videos so successful.”

“I feel like you could perhaps look more into the details of how you will construct the narrative. I would like to see more information on the way in which you will present characters.”

“You have a few really insightful ideas on how you might reflect the lyrics and music with the visuals- in particular, I feel that the flower motif will be well suited to the conventions of the indie genre as well as supporting the idea of “waking up” as you mentioned.

As expected, my audience provided me with some excellent feedback and suggestions for improvement. I especially feel that the suggestion that I produce a test sheet and animation before producing the rough cut was an excellent idea that I will surely act on.

In terms of the idea of using filmed footage- while I do feel that this is a valid point to make, I think that integrating filmed footage with animation would be technically very difficult to produce- so I would instead consider using a series of stills which have the same “padding” effect but are less difficult to produce and suit the tone and style of the video more.

A rather general comment was that as a viewer, one person would prefer to see more detail on the way in which I present my characters. All in good time; this will of course feature heavily in my up and coming posts.
