Treating Acuteand Chronic Pain

Pain is a very real problem in the United States.

severe pain, according to a new study prepared by the National Institutes of Health. Pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined.

Pain is actually a wide spectrum of disorders including acute pain, chronic pain and cancer pain and sometimes a combination of these. Pain can also arise for many different reasons such as surgery, injury, nerve damage, and metabolic problems such as diabetes. Occasionally, pain can even be the problem all by itself, without any obvious cause at all.

For many suffering from pain, living an active and full life may seem impossible. But help is available from pain management specialists.

The Pain Management SpecialistA pain management specialist is a physician with special training in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of all different types of

of pain, it has become more important to have physicians with specialized knowledge and skills to treat these conditions. An in-depth knowledge of the physiology of pain, the ability to evaluate patients with complicated pain problems, understanding of specialized tests for diagnosing painful conditions, appropriate prescribing of medications to varying pain problems, and skills to perform procedures (such as nerve blocks, spinal injections and other interventional techniques) are all part of what a pain management specialist uses to treat pain.

The broad variety of treatments available for the treatment of pain is growing rapidly. The pain management physician is uniquely trained to use these new treatments safely and effectively to help his or her patients. The pain management specialist also plays an important role in coordinating additional care such as physical therapy, psychological therapy, and rehabilitation programs in order to offer patients a comprehensive treatment plan with a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of their pain.

The standard for pain management education is a fellowship (additional training beyond residency) in pain management. Most fellowship programs are associated with anesthesiology residency training programs. There are also fellowship programs associated with neurology and physical medicine and rehabilitation residency programs.

Our hands are the primary way we interact with the world and with each other. When a problem takes place in the hand, such as a disruption in sensation, movement, or muscle contraction, it can interfere with simple and complicated tasks.

surgery no longer need to travel out of the area to receive specialized care. Colleen

Dr. Calvey, who joined Sandusky Orthopedics in November 2015, completed her residency in orthopedic surgery at Akron General Medical Center (now a Cleveland Clinic hospital) and her fellowship in hand and micro-surgery at the Christine M. Kleinert Institute in Louisville, Kentucky.

No matter the patient’s age, including adult

and pediatric patients, Dr. Calvey is able to provide treatment for a variety of conditions

• Fractures and dislocations

• Arthritis • Joint contractures • Ligament or tendon lacerations or injuries • Nerve lacerations or injuries (such as carpal tunnel syndrome) • Lacerations to arteries in the hand • Tumors and cancers of the bone, muscle, and skin

Not only do our hands allow us to go about our day with simple tasks, such as eating, drinking, dressing, or driving our car; but also allow us to support our families, earn a wage, maintain our homes, and pursue our hobbies in sports, music, and the arts. A simple touch

can give us valuable information about an object or our environment, or deliver comfort to a crying child or someone in need; and a simple handshake can transform a stranger to a new friend or seal a business deal.

When a problem occurs in this essential part of the body, specialized care can be found close to home. Hand surgeons are specially trained to provide nonsurgical and surgical care of such problems involving the hand, wrist, forearm, and occasionally the elbow or shoulder, so patients can get back to doing both small and complicated tasks. Patients can get back to life.

To make an appointment with Dr. Calvey, call Firelands Physician Group-Sandusky Orthopedics at 419-625-4900.
