I am writing this introduction of the already 4th TravelTelly magazine at a

magical and beautiful place in our world, the San Blas Islands in Panama. I

hope that our readers are also at some amazing place or planning a new

journey, to capture some incredible moments and cultures which will make

you appreciate life and the world we are living in even more! Saying this, I

realized after seeing this video, that it is so important to treat this world the

best way we can!

Our consuming culture and all the rubbish we leave behind is a huge problem,

and we can only enjoy this world if we take care of it. Together with the

TravelTelly team we decided to start a new recurring section in our magazine.

The topic will be about eco projects and initiatives around the world, which all

try to make a better and cleaner planet. This way we hope you all get inspired

to do your own small part of making this a cleaner world!

Are you a travel photographer/videographer and would you like to be

interviewed by TravelTelly? Contact us and maybe we will promote you and

your work in one of our future magazine issues.

Safe, clean and happy travels to you!

Costa RicaA three hour drive from san José will bring you to Jaco, a little surftown

on the Atlantic side of Costa Rica. You can take the local busses or shuttle

busses, like we did. The shuttle busses go to many different place close by

a hotel near the airport. Jaco is a nice place to relax and to do some surfing.

It was great to start at the beach, before heading to our first real stop to do

some wildlife filming. Of course we made some shots in Jaco, but because

there were no big waves at that time, we couldn’t make any surfing shots.

Manual Antonio National Park

We stayed in Quepos, which is a small town near Manual Antonio National

Park. Along the road from Quepos to Manual Antonio NP, you find many

different places to stay at. With the local bus (which is the cheapest way

of traveling. it is less than half a dollar one way), you can easily get to the

national park. The entrance fee is $10,-. Don’t expect a huge park, but

there is still enough to see. Be on time, so that you can visit the park before

the large groups come in and make lots of noise. Having said this, many

animals don’t mind people and are used to seeing them around. Often the

sloths are just sleeping. But for us video/photographers we like to have the

best place to film/photograph from and we like to stay there for a while, to

get the best shot possible. Animals that you might see in Manuel Antonio

include capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, different kind of birds, sloths and

last but not least raccoons. Next to seeing wildlife, the national park has some

beautiful beaches to offer, where you can enjoy a relaxed day in the sun, ...or can’t

you?!

Be aware of pick pocketing!!

When visiting Manuel Antonio NP, be aware of pick pocketing. It’s not your money

that will get stolen, but your food. The raccoons are often found on the beach

searching for food, and they don’t mind getting into your bag to look for it! We

enjoyed this experience because it felt like we were in nature and people just have

to make sure that their bags are closed and that

they know where their belongings are. Please

don’t feed the raccoons. Watch the video we

made, when raccoons are on the move to find

some local food vimeo.com/59880245

Bike tour

In Quepos we met Marcelo Figueroa, who started his cycling around the world tour

in El Salvador and now he was heading to South America. From there he will travel

to Africa or Europe. If he makes it to Amsterdam, we will try and do an interview

with him. TravelTelly likes these kind of brave hearts, who like to explore the world

in their own ways. Maybe Marcelo will come across your country and you can help

him with whatever he might need!

This is one of the slogans we found on his website “Many dreams could come

true if only you believe in them.” And TravelTelly really

believes this to be true, so we wish Marcelo all the best

and we hope to see him again. If you want to know

more about him and his journey, check out his website:

Puerto Viejo

From the Pacific side of Costa Rica we

made our way to the Caribbean side

of the country. Puerto Viejo is a nice

place with beautiful beaches, where it

is possible to stay close to the coast and

in the middle of a national park with all

kinds of animals. We made one of our

best sloth shots right next to our hostel.

In Puerto Viejo we stayed at the Coconut

Grove. A hostel owned by a German lady

who made our stay lovely. She was very

relaxed and easy going.

PanamaCrossing the border between Costa

Rica and Panama is an easy and fun

experience. The shuttle bus takes you

to the one side where you have to get

off, then you cross the bridge with your

luggage and you will enter Panama.

Your visa fee is $3,- per person. If you

only have colons with you don’t worry,

because there is a guy who can change

your money for dollars, of course with

a high exchange rate :-). Because you

can only get colons at the ATM in

Puerto Viejo, it makes it even funnier

that they have a visa fee where you can

only pay with dollars. But this is all part

of traveling. Besides the entrance fee

and walking over a bridge with all your

luggage, there is nothing special about

crossing the border here. Panama feels

the same as Costa Rica, relaxed and nice!

Bocas del Toro

For a couple of days we visited the islands of Bocas del Toro. This laid back island group

is another good place to relax at and to do some diving, snorkeling an making some

tropical shots. We flew with Air Panama from Bocas del Toro to Panama City. This is

a one hour flight and the easiest way to quickly get to Panama City. Take care of your

camera bag because the hand luggage boot is way too small. Let the staff know you

are carrying a camera and they will take care of it.

Panama is one of the biggest metropolitan cities in Central America. It has a beautiful

skyline and when they finish all the work around the boulevard, it will give you a

great view of the skyline as well. Panama can be divided into 2 areas. The area with

high skyscrapers which is more modern and the area around the old centre with its

historic buildings. To discover both areas of the city, you can walk along the shore

over the boulevard and walk from the modern city centre to the historic centre.

The boulevard itself is also a must visit, as people are doing sports, relax and enjoy

each other’s company. It’s a lovely place to walk around and to experience the city

life. When the boulevard is finished, we definitely want to come back to see and

experience the Panama City life again. In the old town you can immerse yourself into

the authentic city life, with small markets where you can buy your souvenirs.

It was hard for us to get a good spot

to film the skyline, because of all

the work they are doing around the

boulevard. But if you take your time

you can find a place in the old town

and you can still have an awesome

view of the Panama skyline. Panama City

Page 12: TravelTelly Magazine issue 4

The Panama Canal is a must see. So many

massive ships pass through the canals,

you can easily spend a couple of hours

over there. It also takes a lot of time to

guide the ships through the canal but it

is a lively scene to watch. To get the best

photo/video shot isn’t easy, because you

are watching the ships from a platform

and that place is very crowded most

of the time. Using your tripod is going

to be hard. We filmed during a Sunday,

so it’s probably less crowed during the

workweek.

San Blas Islands

If you’d like to make some amazing

photos/videos from tropical islands, then

the San Blas Islands are some of the most

beautiful islands in the world. It is possible

to spend the night at one of these islands,

which is really cool because you can stay

with the actual Kuna Yale Indians. We

spend the night on a very small island,

together with a family who lived here.

The small huts, and going back to basic

made it even more amazing. Because the

San Blas Islands are becoming a popular

tourist destination, we hope that the

Kuna Yale Indians can hold on to their

culture, without too many tourists and

luxury resorts around them. TravelTelly

believes that holding on to cultures is

important and as tourists we shouldn’t

want those luxury standards, this is the

only way tourists and traditional cultures

can come together.

We only spend a short amount of time on

the islands and there is so much more to

Panama Canal

12 TravelTelly.com

Page 13: TravelTelly Magazine issue 4

See our Cambodia video here vimeo.com/2941485

see, but even this short time was definitely worth it. We hope that things on these

islands won’t change too much for the Kuna Yale Indians, so that we travelers can

experience their culture and traditional ways, without wanting luxury and other

western things. Having an open mind and no expectations can help to make sure

you have an incredible experience and make some beautiful photos/videos, so that

you will remember this amazing place with its special people for the rest of your life.

Overall, we really recommend to travel and photograph/film in Costa Rica and

Panama. You can capture stunning nature as well a wildlife and next to this the relaxed

atmosphere makes you appreciate this beautiful part of our planet even more!

Photo/Video gear to bring

to Costa Rica/Panama:

Remember, if you’re going to the coast, to bring your waterproof gear with you. Next to our Sony FS 700 we also had some GoPros with us, because there are many places around Costa Rica and Panama where you can make some amazing underwater shots.

Yosemite National Park

is a place that many people dream

of and want to visit at least once in

their lives. We can only recommend

it as this park has so much to

offer, including many spectacular

viewpoints, waterfalls and wildlife.

You should at least take a couple of

days to visit this immense area, but

video/photographers might want to

take a week. Yosemite is such a huge

park, that your best option is to visit

it by car and choose two places you

would like to visit per day.

The park’s main attractions are the

viewpoints looking out on Half Dome

(Glacier Point) and El Capitan in

Yosemite Valley (Tunnel View). The

rugged mountains in Yosemite are what

makes this national park so unique, as

well as its many many waterfalls, of

which Yosemite Falls is probably the

most spectacular. The Tioga Pass is

the easiest and most beautiful road in

Yosemite, from which you can discover

the park’s most amazing places while

driving. You’ll pass by mountain lakes,

snowy summits, high waterfalls, rock

formations and forest areas. In these

forest areas you can also undertake

some hikes and you might see some of

Yosemite’s old and huge Sequoia trees.

Another way of exploring Yosemite is

by bike, which you can rent in the park.

After a strenuous bike ride, there’s

nothing better than taking a plunge

and cooling off in one of Yosemite’s

many clear blue lakes, like Tenaya Lake.

If you’re lucky and in the right season,

you might even spot a black bear

walking around the park, so keep your

eyes open at all times!

Frank is the person in our TravelTelly

team who loves to take different crazy

shots with the GoPro camera! Frank is

our wintersport cameraman and has

been shooting, testing and playing with

this little camera since the beginning of

GoPro and uses it especially during his

wintersport travels. You can see two of his

videos on our TravelTelly Vimeo channel.

He filmed in February with the GoPro

Hero 3 in Austria.

I was excited about creating a new

winter sports movie and looking forward

to getting some much needed shots for

a new movie. When GoPro announced

the new Hero3 Black Edition just a couple

months before my departure to this

year’s winter sports destination - Flachau,

Austria - I couldn’t believe my luck. The

top of the line Hero3 has everything in

it to get some great footage. Together

with a bunch of accessories like the chest

harness, monopod, surfboard mounts and

the head strap to get the much needed

diversity in shots, I was ready for a great

week. I did my homework and prepped

Frank Keyner

20 TravelTelly.com

Page 21: TravelTelly Magazine issue 4

my board with the new mounts and

brought 4 batteries along for my GoPro.

Because damn, they do drain fast. With

the cold they lasted 45 min tops!

Ok, so normally, I would now start telling

you how great my week has been and that

I have enough shots to create a truly epic

winter sports movie. Unfortunately, there

are some things you just can’t control.

First of all, the weather. The great thing

was that we did have more then enough

deep powder like snow. Great for off piste!

But the downside was that it just kept

snowing during the whole week and that

the visibility was really poor. It’s difficult to

get proper shots without sunshine.

Another thing you can’t control is your

health. On the third day, I woke up

with a cold, a headache and no energy

whatsoever. But hey, this was not going

to put me down! So, I went up the

mountain, only to realize that it wasn’t

safe to be on the mountain with the

condition I was in. So bye bye snowboard,

bye bye filming and hello bed. So there

you have it. In my head I had the whole

movie planned out. With the footage I

did get, I probably need to adjust the plan

and create another format. But isn’t this

what we fellow travel filmmakers always

do? Expect the unexpecting, because

traveling in combination with filming

never goes according to plan. It’s how you

cope with it and your willingness to adapt

that makes you a great filmmaker. I hope

that I managed to do just that in the end.

Enjoy to play and shoot with the GoPro 3, Heroes!

Tripomatic Free (in the App Store and Google Play) – Trip planning

you’ll love. Tripomatic is a great App to have when you’re going

places, but don’t know what to go see and do yet. Just type in the

city you’re visiting and the amount of days that you will spend there,

and the App will automatically make a list of attractions and places that you should

visit within these days. You won’t have to go to a tourist centre or buy a travel guide,

when you already know what the highlights and tourist attractions of that city are,

within just a couple of seconds. Another great feature of this App is the fact that you

can look on the map of the city and see photos of all kinds of attractions and add them

to your own list. Add them by day, category or save your plan by transportation. Many

options available and when you’re done you can even print it out. Planning your trip has

never been so much fun! tripomatic.com

Every month, we will describe a couple of useful apps in this section.

Vine Free (in the App Store and later Google Play) – Twitter’s newest way to gain

interest and put a different spin on Tweeting. The Instagram of video,

allows users to create a six second video loop and post it to Twitter

or Facebook. We think this app could be very useful for all kinds

of companies, but we will discuss Vine for the travel industry and for travel photo/

New Zealand wildlife

1. Did you know that dusky dolphins are primarily spotted around New Zealand?

The best place to spot these dolphins is on the southern island in Kaikoura, where

you could see groups as large as 10 to 500 dusky dolphins.

2. Did you know that the kiwi is the national symbol of New Zealand?

The kiwi is only found in New Zealand. There are 5 different species, which are all

endangered.

3. Did you know that 85% of New Zealand’s fur seals live on the Auckland

Islands? Fur seals are easily recognized by their pointy nose, long whiskers and

visible ears.

NEW YORK CITY

The last time we stayed in New York

for 2 weeks and we had an amazing

time filming over there. The city

has so much to offer for us photo/

videographers and the city is full

of creative people! NYC is also one

of those cities where they like to

collaborate with your productions,

because you are promoting their

city. For documentaries and future

films, you can get special permission

to shoot on locations where it is

usually difficult to film! The best

time to shoot in New York is during

spring time and during the fall,

because then it’s not too hot and the

light is beautiful. We filmed in NYC in

the September month and had some

amazing days. We’ll definitely be

back there soon to film some more.

Who doesn’t want to take photos and videos in

one of the greatest cities in the world, New York!?

We found an amazing timelapse video made by Mindrelic - Manhattan in motion vimeo.com/24492485 Definitely check this one out!

1. Times Square The most famous hotspot in NYC is of course Times Square. This busy

and crowded place is great to film, from many directions. If you start filming at the end of the

day, you have the best light and you can also get some evening shots with all the neon lights.

2. Brooklyn Bridge One of the most famous bridges in the world, the Brooklyn Bridge.

Take some shots from the East River Piers. You can find the piers behind the Manhattan

Heliport. (If you want some amazing shots from above Manhattan, you can take the

helicopter sightseeing tour, something we would really like to do next time).

3. Downtown Manhattan Walk through Manhattan. There are so many places from

where you can shoot some nice videos, like the Financial District or Central Park. Just buy

a metro ticket and walk around.

4. Statue of Liberty The city’s highlight that you cannot miss, is the Statue of

Liberty. You can take a ferry to Liberty Island, but because of hurricane Sandy they are

still busy restoring it. Read more about the restorations here: www.nps.gov/stli/after-

hurricane-sandy.htm They also closed down Ellis Island. We made some nice shots from

Government’s Island, a good alternative.

5. Take a ferry to make some amazing photo/videos from Manhattan. The best way to

see Manhattan’s skyline! If you do take a cruise, remember to take one at the end of the

day, so that you will have the best light and if you’re lucky with the weather, a nice sunset

as well. We went on a cruise with www.circleline42.com. A useful link for more NYC highlights: http://nymag.com/visitorsguide/sightseeing/

Not far from Cancun, Sowa began constructing his first island in 1998. Collecting empty plastic bottles, plywood and bamboo he’d find on the beach, he built up the island until a two story house and three beaches arose, with sand from a build up near the shore that was otherwise dredged to let boats through.

Through an ambitious Kickstarter campaign, Sowa hopes to expand the island, and launch it out into the lagoon. Further, Sowa hopes to sail Joysxee around the world, and teach visitors that trash can be treasure and even become paradise.

Triple Security Luggage Lock $13.00 – magellans.com

As you are traveling and filming/photographing, it’s

important to lock all your valuable equipment. This

ingenious triple security luggage lock has two loops.

Feeling safe with all you camera gear in a large and

crowded metropolitan city like Shanghai, is always

an adventure. When you first arrive you never really

know what to expect, this is also part of traveling. But

for us and many others with us, it feels really good

when you finally find that safe place from where you

can take amazing photos/videos freely.

Next to feeling safe, Shanghai has everything you are

looking for when you want to film the Chinese urban

city life, like the classic buildings in Yuyuan Garden.

It is a real tourist hotspot, so it will be crowded, but

you can take some nice shots from old Shanghai with

in the background the new modern skyscrapers. And

people told us that you can get the best dumplings

there, the perfect way to celebrate a good shoot.

You can easily find your way via the good metro

system that Shanghai offers and it isn’t expensive. It

is the easiest way to find your way in this huge city.

One of the best places to go and film in

Shanghai is Nanjing Road in the evening

and walk to the Bund. Nanjing Road is a

modern street, which in the evening turns

into a street full of neon lights. Such a lovely

place to take some photo/videos at during

the day as well as in the evening. Next to

this street, we found some more typical

Chinese streets, close to Nanjing Road, with

some old Chinese street signs. So try to

look for other places than the main street

as well. Often you will find the best shots

away from the beaten track. ☺

Nanjing Road and the Bund are easy to combine because they’re found in the same

direction. The Bund is a large and lively boulevard, where many tourists and locals

go to get a view of the impressive skyline. Because it’s such a crowded place, it

can be hard to find a spot for you to film from, as you don’t want people touching

your tripod when you’re filming. If someone knows another good place to film the

Skyline from, please share it with us!

Page 32: TravelTelly Magazine issue 4

Even though it was so crowded, we still made some really cool (time lapse) skyline

shots. Notice: when it gets dark, it takes some time before all the lights of the

buildings are on. But it is pretty awesome to see this change happening in the city,

especially when the lights of the Oriental Pearl Tower (TV tower) are on when taking

a time lapse video. Watch our shot here.

The Jing‘an Temple is one of the most famous temples in Shanghai. It is located

on the West Nanjing Highway, the hustle and bustle area of the city. This beautiful

Buddhist temple is located between the modern skyscrapers. A nice place to go and

see many (normally busy) Chinese people praying and burning incense. Opening

Hours: 7:30am - 5:00pm.

The Lujiazui Shanghai area is the perfect spot to shoot photos/videos of the Lujiazui

Circular Pedestrian Bridge. Traffic and people come together on this bridge, which

can make a nice time lapse. From here you also have a nice view of Shanghai’s many

skyscrapers and of the Oriental Pearl Tower.

Filming during the morning at the Zhongshan Park was definitely one of our

highlights when filming in Shanghai. The local staff with whom we were working,

told us to visit Zhongshan Park in the early morning.

S H A N G H A I“I woke up early, not knowing what to

expect this morning. I already felt very

much at home in Shanghai and I hoped

to see people doing Tai Chi. When I

arrived outside the metro station near

Zhongshan, I saw the first large group of

older people doing Tai Chi. I started filming

and there were some lovely people doing

all kinds of Tai Chi on music, waking up

early was already the best thing I did

that day! I immediately felt “zen” when

filming these people. Many of them were

wearing white clothes and there was

one man in particular who I wanted to

film, because he had such a beautiful

face. After a couple minutes he left and

I thought he didn’t like me filming him,

but within a minute he was back with a

friend of him. I felt really welcome and

enjoyed filming this first group. After this

group I walked through Zhongshan Park

and I was pretty much the only one who

wasn’t Chinese. This made it even more

fun for me experiencing the Chinese

culture. At every corner people were

enjoying their morning time in the park.

They all did something different, from

Thai Chi and Kung Fu to dancing and

talking to each other. I just had the most

amazing morning, so if you find yourself

in Shanghai, don’t forget to wake up

early and go the Zhongshan Park”

We definitely recommend Shanghai for

a visit and as a city for taking photos

and videos. Shanghai is growing fast,

but even though it is a western city, you

will also feel like you’re in the real China!

Feel at home in one of the biggest cities in the world!

‘100 Countries 5000 Ideas’ is one of our personal favorites, when it comes

to must have travel books. This is the perfect book to have when trying to

decide where to go for your next trip. The book describes 100 countries and

their highlights. There are over 250 images and maps found in this book and

as always, National Geographic only shows us incredible photos. Next to that,

it gives expert advice (pros, cons, safety, etc.), traveler’s notebooks (climate,

language, currency, etc.) and several charts (weather, costs, lifestyle, etc.).

‘100 Countries 5000 Ideas’ helps you to decide which country to visit next. It

gives all the basic information needed, including the country’s most popular

cities, landscapes, festivals, coasts, excursions, wildlife and cultural heritage.

When you decide which country you want to visit, you still need to buy a

normal travel guide though, as this book only gives you ideas. The charts are

really handy, as you can easily find out what kind of weather you can expect,

and search for destinations to match your money, lifestyle or interests. The

only ‘negative’ thing about this book is that it is focused on the United States

of America and the United Kingdom. This means that ‘time to destination’ for

example, is described from the UK/ USA to destination.

The Hurtigruten is probably well known

by European residents, but not as much

by the rest of the world. It is a cruise along

the coastline of Norway and takes about

7 days, starting in Bergen and ending in

Kirkenes (or the other way around). During

this cruise you stop in many other Norwegian villages and cities, which makes the

Hurtigruten one of the best ways to discover this amazing country and especially its

stunning fjords. Norway is still on our bucket list to film at and traveling by cruise ship,

while hopping off in some amazing places, would be a dream journey for TravelTelly.

Route description

The Hurtigruten stops at 34 villages along the way (you can also choose to just visit some

of these places and hop on board at another harbor): Bergen – Florø – Måløy – Torvik –

Ålesund – Geiranger – Molde – Kristiansund – Trondheim – Rørvik – Brønnøysund –

Sandnessjøen – Nesna – Ørnes – Bodø – Stamsund – Svolvær – Stokmarknes – Sortland -

Risøyhamn – Harstad – Finnsnes – Tromsø – Skjervøy – Øksfjord – Hammerfest – Havøysund

–Honningsvåg – Kjøllefjord – Mehamn – Berlevåg – Båtsfjord – Vardø - Vadsø - Kirkenes

Trip Highlights

Bergen – Ålesund - Kristiansund – Trondheim – Harstad - Tromsø - Hammerfest – Kirkenes.

Bergen is probably Norway’s main tourist capital, though Oslo is its actual capital city.

Bergen has a stunning setting with its traditional colored wooden cabins and the amazing

fjords that surround the city make it even more spectacular. Kristiansund is another

picturesque village with incredible views and beautiful surroundings. You’ll end your cruise

in Kirkenes, where you might find some of the country’s indigenous people, the Sami.

Price tag

This cruise with the Hurtigruten costs between $1250,- and $2000,- for a 7 day trip.
