Traveling Forensics Workshops

Program Let the experts come to you! The National Law Enforcement Museum’s Traveling Forensics Workshops tailors a fun-filled, science education program to your students’ needs. We offer five core workshops that provide the key elements of forensic science and expose students to potential careers in forensics. These workshops were developed to meet the needs of 5th through 12th grade students, but can be tailored for any audience. In addition to our core workshops we also offer lessons exploring the American legal system and specific forensic science methods. In Crime to the Courtroom, students take part in our interactive role-playing workshop simulating the real process of a murder investigation. Other workshops include: • Forensic Anthropology • Questioning Documents • Body Decomposition • Bloodstain Pattern Analysis • Criminology • Firearms and Ballistics • Arson

These programs brought to you in partnership with the Crime Museum.

Workshops TOTAL FORENSICS LAB Overview: This multi-station lab introduces students to forensic science. Students step into the shoes of crime scene investigators to solve a case. Student investigators will examine bloodstains, lift latent fingerprints, microscopically compare fibers, and decipher DNA profiles. The lesson concludes with the students using their new skills to solve a crime.

Time: Maximum capacity: Recommended grade levels: Price:

1 Hour 70 students 5th through 12th $550 - first session; $300 - each additional session + travel fees

PATHOLOGY LAB Overview: This workshop shows students what it is really like to be a forensic pathologist. Students learn what kinds of cases are reviewed by medical examiners, how autopsies are performed, and how death certificates are completed. The lesson culminates in students take on the role of medical examiner to determine the cause and manner of death by performing a simulated autopsy.

Time: Maximum capacity: Recommended grade levels: Price:

1 Hour 30 students 9th through 12th $350 - first session; $100 - each additional session + travel fees

BLOOD & DNA LAB Overview: This workshop explores how bloodstain pattern evidence can help investigators reconstruct a crime scene. Students will compare test castoff patterns to determine weapons, trajectory, and possible suspects. Classroom instructors will also talk about the importance of DNA, and its part in the legal system.

Time: Maximum capacity: Recommended grade levels: Price:

1 Hour 30 students 7th through 12th $350 - first session; $100 - each additional session + travel fees

IMPRESSIONS LAB Overview: This workshop explores shoeprint and fingerprint impressions. Students will learn to collect shoeprint evidence by making a dental stone cast, and how to lift latent fingerprints from smooth surfaces. Classroom instructors will help students perform fingerprint comparisons.

Time: Maximum capacity: Recommended grade levels: Price:

1 Hour 30 students 5th through 12th $350 - first session; $100 - each additional session + travel fees

FACTS VS. FICTION LAB Overview: This workshop will educate students on the misconceptions about forensic science popularized on TV and in films. From common scientific errors to inaccuracies in portraying the legal system, this workshop demystifies modern crime solving. Students will understand the difference between the facts of crime science investigation versus the fiction of TV crime dramas.

Professional Development As forensic science is continuing to grow within our education system, the National Law Enforcement Museum wants to ensure that all educators teaching forensic science are using the very best methods and proper techniques in the classroom. Our on-site professional development program has no set agenda. Each full or half-day instruction can be adapted to suit the need’s of participants. In the general , the program includes sections on the legal aspects of forensic science, the CSI effect, and how to create a mock crime scene. Other forensic fields can also be explored including: • Forensic questioning of documents • Bloodstain pattern analysis • DNA – how its analyzed and how it used • Impressions analysis • Crime scene protocol and documentation • Firearms and ballistics • Forensic psychology • Forensic anthropology Pricing is tailored to each program. For more information on your unique program, contact our educator at [email protected] or 202.737.7860.

Frequently Asked Questions How can I reserve a program? Please contact our educator at [email protected] or 202.737.7860. What are your traveling fees and why do you charge them? Our traveling fee is $2.50 per mile traveled to the site and back. So if we travel 60 miles to your site, you can expect $300 in traveling fees. Fees cover fuel, vehicle maintenance costs, and the additional staff time. There are no travel fees for sites in the District of Columbia. Will my site require an overnight stay? Any site located more than 120 miles from the Museum’s office will require an overnight stay to ensure that there is enough time for the program. For programs that require an overnight stay, the site is responsible for lodging fees for instructors, but not meals. How far in advance should I book my program? We take reservations all year long and recommend calling several months in advance for best selection of dates. Programs will not be officially reserved until the Museum receives your deposit payment. How much room do I need for the program? Most workshops can be held in a classroom. The exception would be our labs which allow for more student participants. These labs could be held in a large classroom, auditorium, cafeteria, or gym. What will my school need to provide? Each lab or workshop has a specific list of items the school will need to furnish. If you have any questions as to whether or not you have these items available , please contact our educator at [email protected] or 202.737.7860. What is your hourly rate? The Museum charges by the hour for our educator encompassing the entire time she is off- site. This means the if you have a lab at 9 AM and a workshop at 11 AM, you will also be charged for 10 AM. Please make sure to plan your sessions accordingly.
