OVERVIEW

Indonesia is a country located between Southeast Asia and Australia, comprising the world’s largest archipelago, 17,508 islands in total. More than 237 million people live in the country. Indonesia is considered the home to the largest Muslim population in the world; its economy is considered the largest in the Southeast Asia and one of the largest emerging economies in the world.

Jacarta, the national capital, is the city with the highest population concentration. Bali is the main tourist destination of the country, known for its cultural manifestations, such as the dance, sculpture, painting, leather and metal works, and music.

In general, English is spoken by a surprising number of people, even in remote places. However, knowing a few words in bahasa is ideal.

Indonesia is definitely one of the world’s most complete and inexhaustible destinations.

The climate is equatorial with rainfall throughout the year, although, sometimes, less intense and frequent from May to October. The rainy season (monsoon) lasts from November to March in Indonesia. The annual temperatures vary from 25º to 35º at sea level. The sea temperature fluctuates between 26º and 29º on the costs of Indonesia.

The end of the rainy season (March and April) is the best time to visit the country: few tourists and unbelievable prices. For those

that want to practice surf, it is important to know that the waves only occur during the dry season, from April to October.

From June to July there is the Kites Festival. The event has grown a lot over the years and today is one of the main focuses of tourist attraction.

In November, there is one of the most important events in the island, the Bali International Jazz Festival. The festival features artists from around the world.

TRANSPORT

The main air travel routes are from Frankfurt, in Germany; Amsterdam, in the Netherlands; or Istanbul, in Turkey. All the routes land in Jacarta, capital of Indonesia.

The ideal is to always take a boat when possible or rent a car, but be prepared, because the traffic in the country is a chaos. Taking taxis of well-known companies is recommended, and preferably scheduling the trips.

There is no shortage of motorcycles over there because of the low rental cost.

ATTRACTIONS

The Bukit peninsula, in the south of Bali Island, concentrates all the Balibeautiful and famous beaches: Ulu Watu, Padang Padang, Balangan, Nusa Dua, etc. Outside this region, the beaches are with predominantly dark volcanic sand. Nusa Dua is a beach that looks more like a large pool protected by a reef. Balangan also has good portions of sand.

There are places which are indispensable in your travel itinerary, such as the lakes of Kelimutu in the old craters of volcanoes, the beautiful temples of Borobudur, the rituals of Tona Toraja, on the island of Sulawesi, a diving in Manado and in the island of Bunaken and surfing in Lombok.

When arriving in Indonesia there is another flight missing to a destination that is

unmissable, Sorong in Papua Island. From there, just get a boat and go to the Raja Ampat Marine Park. The park is considered the Mecca of dive by the sport lovers. The name is Raja Ampat, or “Four Kings”, making reference to the four major islands of the archipelago: Misool, Salawati, Batanta and Waigeo. In the archipelago there are such vast numbers of fish and coral species being recorded and discovered all the time, and it is not surprising that the vastness and beauty of the place are so impressing.

WHERE TO STAY

Lodging options abound. It is possible to find simple rooms for less than US$ 20, but also super luxurious hotel with daily rates exceeding US$ 1,000. The beach of Nusa Dua is famous for its big international resorts.

A hint of a charming hotel, but without so much refinement is the Sunhouse Gest House, in Sanur. Also The Colony Hotel, in Seminyak, is a hotel with only 20 rooms, all tastefully decorated. The location is great, although not facing the beach.

The Viceroy Bali, in Ubud, has its rooms and infinity-edge pool overlooking the forest. The integration with nature is revitalizing.

DINING OUT

The gastronomy varies from region to region, and it is heavily influenced by Chinese, European and Indian cuisine. The main food is rice, usually served with meat, vegetables and eggs. As in much of Asia, the food is very spicy. The trick is to ask whether the dish is “spicy” or not, and when in doubt always ask the more traditional.
